Working in concert with Tom Walker, C H A I R , B O A R D O F T R U S T E E S President Van Dyk, I continue to be energized by the leadership exercised by the Board. This past year was

a year focusing on a vision for the future of Columbia and I am confident that the direction the Board has chosen is one that will bear fruit for the seminary as we uniquely serve God’s mission in the world. Given this focus on the years to come, the Board made three significant decisions to chart the path of Columbia into the future: • After a robust strategic planning process, the Board adopted new Strategic Initiatives. These four initiatives call for: creating a nationally recognized program for pastoral leadership formation; establishing online degree programs to expand our

Leadership is a central theme of what we do every year, but this year feels particularly so. We called a new Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Love Sechrest, who began her work with great energy and joy in July. She brings excellent experience both from the private business sector and also from a faculty appointment at Fuller Theological Seminary. We are confident that her leadership will bear much fruit in the coming years. This past year, two named faculty chairs were filled. Dr. Kathy Dawson and Dr. Martha MooreKeish each gave inaugural lectures to large and appreciative audiences. Dr. Dawson is now the Benton Family Associate Professor of Christian Education and Dr. Moore-Keish is the J.B. Green Associate Professor of Systematic Theology. Inauguration into a named chair is a public acknowledgement and appreciation of faculty who have attained high levels of excellence in leadership, teaching, scholarship, and service to the seminary. To further encourage leadership development, The Center for Lifelong Learning has added learning opportunities for clergy, including an

expanded Colloquy for Clergy series, the Healthy Transitions Wellness Retreats for Ministers and Spouses, and The Coaching Institute. We have launched some innovative leadership opportunities in recent months. Macedonian Ministry – a ministry organization that is dedicated to pastoral formation and sustainability – has located their offices and staff here on our campus. This program, with a proven track record of pastoral encouragement, will be offered as a pilot, both to recent graduates and to our students on campus before they graduate. Thank you for your support of our commitments to form our students as pastoral leaders. Thank you, also, for your leadership in your own communities. We are partners together and for that I am grateful.

education outreach; updating the campus master plan and improving the scholarship funds available to attract strong students while defraying the risings cost of theological education; and designing and implementing continuing education programs for direct congregational impact. • The Board adopted a new reduced draw from the seminary’s endowment. In order to maintain the long-term integrity of the legacies and gifts in the endowment, we reduced the draw from 5% to 4.5%. The projections informing this decision put the seminary on track toward a stronger financial foundation for years to come. • Accompanying the reduced draw from the endowment, the Board received and approved a Funding Priorities Initiative which will secure funding for student programs, faculty development, needed capital improvements and feasibility studies for some of the strategic plan priorities. The board commends these initiatives

Many Blessings,

to all those who love and support Columbia, as coupled with the reduction in the endowment draw they will enable us to live into our current mission and towards our strategic vision. Thank you so much for your faithful support. The mission of Columbia Seminary is furthered every day by friends like you who love the church. May God’s will be done in and through us, today and into the future. Grace and Peace,

Tom Walker CHAIR

Your support allows us to provide generous scholarships for the majority of our students and develop innovative academic programs. The contributions of alumni and friends like you to the Annual Fund, combined with other gifts and grants, also provide support for student exploration trips, counseling, and discernment to name just a few areas of impact. We know from past experience that the endowment is critical to the future success of our mission. Our endowment enables quality teaching and Board initiatives for pastoral leadership formation, online degrees and congregational education. Together, the endowment and annual giving maintain a 90% level of financial aid for students to fulfill the mission to which Columbia Theological Seminary is called today. Columbia Seminary monitors its expenditures carefully with only a 3% increase over each previous year. This year’s surplus was the result of both open positions and an ongoing commitment to improved efficiencies. The Board directed the surplus to much needed areas of deferred maintenance of housing, classrooms, library, and offices. Your contributions support these priorities.
