NOW ALSO AVAILABLE FOR ONION
To produce a healthy, uniform crop, it is essential that young plants get a strong start. That’s why we developed the innovative B-Mox® seed enhancing process.
provides stronger, more uniform germination strengthens the plant in the earliest stage stimulates better root development reduces risks for growers in the vulnerable early growth stage makes plants more resilient throughout the growth period is permitted for use in organic agriculture
B-Mox® is available for onion, carrot, and rooted parsley, and always offered in combination with priming technology.
International research trials have shown that our priming technology enhanced with B-Mox® gives an improvement over standard priming, as seen in the development of the crop. Many growers have already experienced the advantages of B-Mox®, with stronger and more uniform crops and higher packout. Bejo Seeds Inc. (main office) 1972 Silver Spur Pl. We combine market research and agronomic expertise to develop onion varieties that people love.

By Leonardo Salgado, Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Entomology, Cornell University
The onion maggot (Delia antiqua) and seedcorn maggot (Delia platura) are among the most problematic insect pests in onions early in the season. Heavy infestations can reduce plant stands by up to 100% if not managed.
The onion maggot has three generations annually, with thirdgeneration larvae overwintering in the soil as pupae. Flies emerge from pupae in late April or May, mate, and lay eggs at the soil base of onion plants. The onion maggot’s life cycle ranges from 37 to over 60 days, including three instars and a pupal stage.
The seedcorn maggot has three to five generations per year, but the initial generations tend to be more numerous and problematic during spring. It lays

eggs in decaying organic matter. The seedcorn maggot’s lifecycle is notably shorter, lasting from 19 to 36 days. Young onion seedlings are especially vulnerable to first-generation larvae of both these insects because onion plants are more susceptible at an early stage. The onion maggot and the seedcorn maggot have different life histories. The onion maggot is a specialist that feeds only on plants in the onion family, such as onion, garlic, leek and chives. Leek, chive and garlic are less preferred by onion maggot than onion. In contrast, the seedcorn maggot is a generalist that feeds on a wide variety of crops such as beans, peas, corn, soybean, cucumber, melon, potato in addition to all of the crops listed above in the onion family. Both pests attack allium crops throughout the northern onion production areas in the U.S. and worldwide, but differ in abundance and pest status within each region. Larvae feed on the below-ground parts of the onion plant, which can kill the plant or render it unmarketable.
There is no curative treatment for the onion maggot and seedcorn maggot because once damage occurs, nothing can be done; therefore, management relies on preventive tactics. Maggot management is achieved through chemical, biological and cultural control practices. Some of these management practices are not economically practical in commercial-scale onion production but could be effective on small diversified farms.
Control of the maggot complex (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) in onions is mainly achieved using seed treatments and transplant tray drenches in transplanted onions.
Foliar sprays have been used to target adult flies before oviposition, but this tactic is not effective because flies disperse and avoid insecticide exposure. To control maggots, various insecticide
seed treatments can be used. These include spinosad, a natural substance derived from a soil bacterium that serves as an insecticide for maggots; cyromazine, an insect growth regulator used to control fly larvae; and three neonicotinoids: thiamethoxam, clothianidin and imidacloprid, which are synthetic insecticides designed to mimic nicotine, a naturally plant molecule found in tobacco. Additionally, the effectiveness of an insecticide seed treatment may vary depending on the local prevalence of onion maggots and seedcorn maggots. Any time you use a pesticide, you must read and follow the label directions and comply with all applicable laws and regulations related to pesticide use. Also, be sure that any pesticide used is approved for use in your country and state/province.
Around 100 species of beetles in the rove beetle (Staphylinidae) and ground beetle (Carabidae) families are generalist predators of eggs and larvae of fly adults. There are also organisms called “nematodes” that are microscopic, worm-like animals that can infect maggots in onions and are commercially available. Some species may be compatible with soil-applied insecticides, but others are not. Soil conditions likely impact the performance of nematodes. Finally, three groups of fungi, (Metarhizium spp., Beauveria bassiana and Entomophthora muscae,) are responsible for infecting and killing maggots in onions. However, fungal isolates tend to cause less mortality of larvae than adults. All are commercially available. An antagonistic effect is likely between entomopathogenic fungi and fungicides used to manage onion plant diseases.

Story and photos by Denise Keller, Editor
Toward the end of July this year, Washington State University (WSU) plant pathologist Lindsey du Toit began hearing from onion growers reporting powdery mildew in their Columbia Basin onion fields. By the time the annual WSU Onion Field Day rolled around on Aug. 28, powdery mildew incidence in the Columbia Basin was the highest du Toit has seen in her 25 years of working with onions in the region. At the field day, she took the opportunity to educate attendees about powdery mildew development, symptoms and management.

Powdery mildew, a disease favored by high relative humidity, is typically unproblematic in the Columbia Basin because of the region’s low humidity and infrequent rainfalls. However, weather this summer was unusual, including a milder July followed by a warmer August. Warm days alternating with cool nights in late summer, combined with a dense crop canopy, can result in higher relative humidity, driving the disease.
“There’s a huge benefit to growers in the western U.S. where you have the ability to control the moisture with irrigation, when it goes on and how much goes on,” du Toit said. “When we have humidity like this, you start to get a little taste of what East Coast and Midwest growers have to deal with in terms of disease pressure.”
du Toit discussed factors that can further impact onions’ susceptibility to powdery mildew including method of irrigation. The disease is typically more
severe in drip-irrigated and furrowirrigated fields and is seldom seen in overhead-irrigated onions because powdery mildew fungi are not favored by “free moisture” on the leaves, only by high humidity.
Susceptibility varies widely among onion cultivars. However, glossy-type varieties tend to be more susceptible because they have less epicuticular wax on their leaves. Similarly, regularly treating onions with insecticides and adjuvants that remove some of the waxes from onion leaves can make plants more susceptible to infection. du Toit mentioned a 2006 drip-irrigated onion trial evaluating thrips insecticides, in which every plot treated with insecticide developed powdery mildew whereas all of the non-treated plots did not.
“It was a real wakeup call about the extent to which some of our insecticide applications are stripping waxes off the leaves, increasing the risk of diseases like powdery mildew. I’m not saying don’t

spray for thrips, but be aware there are consequences from using all those sprays in terms of removing waxes from the leaves,” du Toit said, adding that she has observed similar responses to herbicide applications by other fungi that can infect onion leaves.
Early symptoms of powdery mildew can include sunken, white, oblongcircular lesions that initially could look like symptoms of iris yellow spot. As powdery mildew progresses, powdery white growth can start to develop on the leaves.
To help prevent the development of powdery mildew, du Toit recommended orienting rows into the primary wind direction, whenever feasible, especially when planting a more susceptible variety. This can increase airflow through the canopy between beds, greatly reducing humidity and disease pressure. She also reminded growers to avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, minimize a crop’s moisture stress and incorporate crop residue into the soil after harvest.

When needed, onion growers have access to a variety of registered fungicides in different FRAC groups to help control powdery mildew, du Toit noted. Fungicides in FRAC groups 1, 3 and 11 tend to be effective and have locally systemic movement, which is important because this particular powdery mildew pathogen grows inside leaves, not just on the surface. In contrast, all other powdery mildew fungi grow on the surface of leaves and stems.
To decide if it’s justified economically to try to manage the disease with fungicide applications, growers should consider the factors that increase the risk of powdery mildew, du Toit said, including weather conditions, irrigation, cultivar, and pesticide usage. Growers should also consider how much longer the crop will be growing to assess the potential impact on bulb size and yield, as well as whether they are making any late-season fungicide applications to control other diseases such as Botrytis neck rot or black mold, as the products used for these are usually combinations of FRAC groups 7 and 11 that also help control or prevent the spread of powdery mildew.

In a subsequent report at the field day, du Toit spoke about black mold, which was also favored by the warm weather conditions in the Columbia Basin this August. Black mold began appearing in area onion fields in late August, and researchers are anticipating it could be a problem this year in storage. Infections start in the field, but often remain latent, so the disease may not be discovered until harvest or in storage.

Story and photos by Kris Crookham, Crookham Company
At the 2025 Crookham Onion Reveal in August, the Idaho-based seed producer introduced new varieties to growers in Wilder, Idaho. We caught up with Lyndon Johnson, sales development manager at Crookham, to get the story on the new offerings, including two new mild yellows and a new red.
Delightful is a new intermediate-day yellow from Crookham that will be available for the 2026 planting season. It features a couple of traits that may have inspired its name.
Developed for northern latitudes, Delightful matures in 105 to 108 days. It does have some daylight sensitivity, so it needs to be planted early. Growers should shoot for planting anywhere from March 15 to April 10. This new variety is particularly mild. Johnson has tested it over the last three years, confirming pyruvate levels in the high threes to low fours. It also has high sugars, from 8.5% to 9%.
“It’s very, very mild. And it also stores. You can store Delightful probably until Thanksgiving, maybe almost up to Christmas,” Johnson said.
The other “delightful” trait of this variety is high yield. In the Columbia Basin of Washington, test plots produced 57 tons per acre. That translates to 1,150 100-pound bags an acre, exemplary for an intermediate.
“A tearless onion out of the ground,” is how Johnson describes OIYS19-980, the company’s other new yellow. This 108- to 110-day late intermediate sweet is currently unnamed, but will be named by the time commercial seed is available in August 2027. Crookham’s testing revealed this new variety is very low in pyruvates and methyl thiosulfinates. And with a lachrymatory factor (LF) of 0.05%, it is not only sweet but virtually tearless.

Crookham’s new early long-day red onion, Tantrum, will have plenty of highquality seed available in 2026. Tantrum matures in 112 days and features a deep, striking internal and external color, consistent from bulb to bulb, making it perfect for retail.
“Tantrum has high-definition color between rings, all the way to the center, and it colors up upon maturity. So you don’t have to wait for it to color up after harvesting,” Johnson explained.
There are also two new Vidalia varieties that will be available for planting in 2026. Both 4021 and 4022 are early maturing, so growers can start shipping on Vidalia’s pack date. 4022 is a traditional flat-top, but 4021 is a deeper, more rounded bulb that produces more yield per acre.
Growers can visit crookham.com to learn more about these new varieties as well as the company’s established products like Caliber, Defender and Epic. The site includes videos, growing guidelines and other pertinent information to growers, including disease resistance.
