Every year in the city of Qingdao, millions of tourists have been attracted by the extraordinary landscape and famoushistorical buildings there. For one thing, the thriving tourism industry provide significant revenue of this wonderful city. For another, however, the overcrowded space has lead to the lack of publicity and communication with each other. Thus, it is essential to create a entrance-free public space both for recepting the tourists and for improving the living sarifaction of local residence.

"The Polyhedral Space" provides a brand new experience of public activities. It intends to generate the vitality of the surrounding areas and increase the popularity of Zhongshan Park. The triangular site has restricted the building shape in some way that could not be the same as the surrounding buildings. Therefore, I have organised the space and shape that fused with the ground.

REQUIREMENTS

POPULATION DENSITY Most people are local residence with a large amount of tourists.

LANDSCAPE Most landscape nodes are distributed along the coastlines.

TRANSPORT NODES Both citizens and tourists can get easy access to the site by railways, buses or ferry.

THE TWISTED BOND COMMUNITY PARK OF OLD DISTRICT

Site Location: Hankou District, Wuhan, Hubei, China Completion Time: 05/20/2016 the 8th semester Project Type: Individual / Academic Director: Hong Chen (Professor)

The oldest community Huaxing Li of Hankou District in Wuhan depicts the current living conditionof local residence. The exaggerated private living space has been depriving the narrow alleys and small squares for a long time, causing low transportation efficiency and uncomfortable living experience.

Meanwhile, the broken facilities and the dilapidated buildings bringd potential harm to residence inside.

In order to regenerate the vitality of the old community, it is essential to knock down the dilapidated houses along the lane and making place for more public activities. Instead, I break up the boundary between floors and connect the multi-layered garden by outdoor slopes and stairs, which increase the transportation accessibility and the possiility of communication. "The Twisted Bond" shows a special form of space organization which weaves the three-dimensional garden together and brings more pleasure to the citizens.

TRANSPORTATION At the peak time of the day, the main road near the site is crowded by cars and people.

RESIDENTIAL DENSITY Most of old residential buildings were last over 40 years. However, the current living condition is not suitable for them to live in.

"The Twisted Bond" contains different types of space in different section which allow people to do various kinds of activities. While the residence are getting tired of normal lives in their small apartment, the multilayered park would be the exact place for them to do recreational activities and promote their life satisfaction.

TIDE CLOCK REGENERATION OF PIAZZA SAN MARCO

Site Location: Piazza San Marco, Venice City, Italy Completion Time: 2016/07/30 the 8th semester Project Type: Teamwork/ Academic Partner: Zhengqin Pan, Qianye Yu, Yuyu Peng Director: Kalliope Kontozoglou, Albertus S. Wang

Acqua alta is the exceptional tide peaks that occur periodically in the northern Adriatic Sea. The peaks reach their maximum in the Venetian Lagoon, where they cause partial flooding of Venice and Chioggia. The phenomenon occurs mainly between autumn and spring, when the astronomical tides are reinforced by the prevailing seasonal winds which hamper the usual reflux. The annual high tide of the lagoon causes flood every winter from November to Februrary, resulting in the break of transportation for pedrestrian on the Piazza San Marco. Therefore, we come up with the idea of a tide clock in oriental style which serves as the tide observation system and the movable bridges for pedestrian in flooding seasons. Meanwhile, we combline the tide clock with the historical background and surrounding environment of San Marco, inserting the design into the old ground pattern unconspicuously.

THE KARST VILLAGE THE RURAL TOURISM PLANNING AND VOCATIONAL SCHOOL DESIGN Site Location: Maobacao Village, Enshi City, Hubei, China Completion Time: 06/02/2017 the 10th semester Project Type: Individual/Academic Director: Xiaofeng Li (Professor)

The site is located in a small pieceful village named Maobacao, Hubei Province. Surrounded by spectacular moutain views, there are ample tourist resource of this 200-year-old village. However, the long history of traditional culture that deserved to be known by people is dying. Meanwhile, the poor transportation and vacancy of vocational trainers have left the quality of tourism industry behind the surrounding areas. This rural planning illustrates the relationship between the local environment and current social background, between the problems of dying culture and the solution for promoting the tourism industry.

To solve the problems of the low utilization of tourism resouce, the low quality of tourism service and the low efficiency of cultural intergation, it is crucial to analyse the demographic composition, the geography, territory and humanitarian background. The design aims to boost the economy and raising the ability of cultural preservation.

Our new model of living is designed for low-income families, especially for those young parents who have the opportunity to have their own children, including single parents, young couples and other possible family structures that may confront a dilemma that how to provide their children with a safe and livable environment when they do not have enough money and also how to decrease their cost of living without discount their living standards. Also , we include a water management system and a farm on the roof of the living units, to make our affordable housing more self-sufficient, which can help our residents release their financial burden.

WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM

We lift the living units of this zone and the groundfloor space of this zone is left for small-scale markets, public classrooms and other public spaces for the residents. Those markets are connected to the farms on the roof by several elevators exclusive for vegetables. The devices of water management system are underground within the basement. All the waste water and storm water will go through several steps, then the purified water will be sent back to each unit for toilet water and washing water. About our living units, the most important part is the share space, which is connected to a double-height balcony. The enclosure of the double-height space can be adjust according to residents needs. By rotate or remove the components, this space can be more open or more close.

California’s population grows at an accelerating rate each year. To sustain this increasing population, new forms of energy storage must grow. Hoover Dam helped transform the American West, harnessing the force of the Colorado River along with millions of cubic feet of concrete and tens of millions of pounds of steel – to power millions of homes and business. Now, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power wants to equip it with a $3 billion pipeline and a pump station powered by solar and wind energy. The net result would be a kind of energy storage which targets to finish during 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The issue of energy and sustainability are essential components and leading one of the main concerns on 2028 Olympics. With construction of the Olympic sustainability strategy, the project develops a zero waste, overlay infrastructure and shared economy for sailing racing on the Long Beach in 2028.

ADAPTIVE DONUTS IN THE FUTURE WHERE DO PEOPLE LIVE WHEN THE RISING SEA LEVEL FLOODS THE WHOLE CITY OF VENICE?

The city of Venice in Italy, one of UNESCO’s most famous World Heritage Sites, is subsiding. Built in the 5th century AD, this water city has been continuously invaded by the floods and rising sea level.

In Venice, the highest water level in history was 6 feet (1.83 meters), and the closest to us at the end of 2009 also reached 1.43 meters. “Everything is in danger of disappearing. This is not only an alarmist.” Some experts predict that if not rescued, Venice may be completely submerged by the sea in 2050.

Because of the flooding, the population of Venice is decreasing, and there are only less than 60,000 residents. As tourists are rushing in, smart real estate merchants continue to buy old houses and raise prices. The real Venetian can only move out.

The resilient ring city is designed to save residents living in the old city.

SHAPE + FUNCTION

RING The reasons for designing a ring-shaped island: The ring-shape has a high level of wind resistance; Compared to the linear city, the ring-shaped form is more efficient in terms of commuting and cargo transportation.

FRINGE The mechanism of sponge city in the fringe of the Donut will be used to tackle the surface water flooding. The basic elements include permeable ground surface, rainwater recycling, spongy wetland and bioretention facilities.

HEIGHT The height of the Dounts varies in the different sections. In the neighborhood sections, the zenith is under 1000 meters; for the regional center sections, the height range is 1500-2000 meters.

ANCHORS Each building on the Dounts has an underwater anchor. These could be used to resist waves and storms.

DESIGN CONCEPT AND PRINCIPLES

DESIGN CONCEPT: ADAPTIVE RESILIENT CITY

Our main design concept is to develop a self-adaptive resilient city. Urban resilience is the capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses, and systems within a city to survive, adapt, and grow no matter what kinds of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience. By adopting the following design principles into planning, construction, and governance, the resilient city could be achieved gradually.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

1. Develop a resilient city by creating a sponge city mechanism; 2. Prioritize land use efficiency in the development through compact, efficient, mixed-use and functionally balanced urban design; 3. View municipal waste as a resource by improving waste recycling and implementing waste minimization mechanisms.

CAPACITY The capacity of the donuts city depends on the the degree of sea level rise’s severity and market demand. The population of Venice is currently 260,000 residents. With the rising of sea level, residents from other areas will also set up a home on the donut.
