THE HISTORY OF OKTOBERFEST
THE OKTOBERFEST TRADITION
MUNICH, GERMANY Sunday, October 6th, 2018 11:30 pm
OCTOBER 6 The Oktoberfest tradition started in 1810 to celebrate the October 12th marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities which were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates. The main event of the original Oktoberfest was a horse race.
SEPTEMBER 21 Celebrations were held annually after and eventually became larger and more elaborate. An agricultural show was added during the second year. In 1818, a carousel and two swings were set up for the revelers. Such amusements were few in the first decades of the festival, but party-goers were amply entertained by the tree climbing competitions, wheel barrow and sack races, mush eating contests, barrel rolling races, and goose chases. By the 1870s, mechanical rides were an expanding feature of the festival and in 1908, the festival boasted Germany’s very first roller coaster. When the city began allowing beer on the fairgrounds, makeshift beer stands began cropping up, and their number increased steadily until they were eventually replaced by beer halls in 1896. The beer halls, like the beer tents of today, were sponsored by the breweries
The festival was eventually prolonged and moved ahead to September to allow for better weather conditions. Today, the last day of the festival is the first Sunday in October. In 2006, the Oktoberfest extended two extra days because the first Tuesday, October 3, was a national holiday. Over the past 200 years, Oktoberfest was canceled 24 times due to cholera epidemics.
THE GREATEST BEER FESTIVAL ON EARTH
Erika-Mann-Straße 33 80636 München Germany
The Oide Wiesn is on the southern section of the festival area, and it’s where history comes to life. Be astounded by the vintage costumes and try out the fun-filled 20thcentury rides. Continue to the Museum-Tent for an opportunity to learn about the eventful past of Oktoberfest. You can also visit the two beer tents, namely Tradition and Herzkasperl. Both spots offer not only delicious food and drinks, but traditional dancing and musical performances as well. The Oide Wiesn is also the place to be if you want to experience a calmer vibe during the event.
THE OIDE WIESN
Just walking distance from Viktualienmarkt is the historic square known as Marienplatz. Go for a stroll and be mesmerized by the well-preserved Gothic architecture of Rathous, which serves as the city hall. At St. Peterskirche, admire the mix of Gothic and other centuries-old architectural styles as well as the altar built by legendary sculptor Erasmus Grasser. Make sure you also head to the church’s steeple for a lovely view of the city. The center of Marienplatz is where you will see Mariensäule, a column created in 1638 to commemorate the end of the Swedish intervention in the Thirty Years’ War. A golden sculpture of Mother Mary is placed on top of the pillar, and it’s sure to astound you.
MARIENPLATZ
Viktualienmarkt is also located in the city center, and it’s where you can buy a wide variety of gourmet products. With over 140 stalls for you to choose from, you can expect a memorable shopping experience all throughout. Some of the items offered here include cheese, fruits, vegetables, pretzels, and different types of meat. There are also stores selling colorful flowers. The garden area has plenty of tables where you can just sit back and enjoy a delightful meal. Viktualienmarkt is open from Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. However, most of the stores are already closed by 6:00 PM.
VIKTUALIENMARKT
If you want to take a break from Oktoberfest’s bustling atmosphere, then head to this 900-acre (3,642,171 square meter) park. The English Garden is known as one of the world’s biggest parks, and it’s been welcoming visitors since 1789. You can jog, ride a bike, or go for a relaxing stroll through the shaded paths or just relax on the grass by the artificial stream to enjoy the lush scenery. There’s a huge chance of you spotting a few adorable ducks, geese, and squirrels along the way. Proceed to the well-preserved 19th-century Monopteros for a stunning view of the city. Another highlight is the field where you can watch soccer players in action.
ENGLISH GARDEN
Oktoberfest may be well-known for beer drinking and partying, but it also has something special for the kids and kids-at-heart. Visit the festival grounds on a Tuesday and enjoy discounts on both admission tickets and some of the famous rides. One tent you should visit is the Familienplatzl, which offers fun shows, exciting activities, and delicious food for the little ones. Family Day starts at noon and ends at around 6:00 PM.
FAMILY DAY
With its waiters and waitresses constantly smiling despite their rigorous tasks, AugustinerFesthalle is regarded as the friendliest spot. The beer from most tents comes from steel kegs, but Augustiner-Festhalle keeps its old school with wooden barrels. At night, visitors usually get up from the benches and dance to the music. It’s definitely a fun atmosphere. There are 11 more tents for you to choose from, all of which are worth exploring as well.
When it comes to Oktoberfest in Munich, beer tents are often considered to be the main highlight. Each one has something spectacular to offer aside from tasty beverages. At Schützen-Festzelt, enjoy your drink with a plate of delicious pork and potato salad while admiring the rustic features. It’s also the tent where you can watch various competitions from the Bavarian Sport Shooting Association. Marstall is the newest Oktoberfest tent, but it’s already considered as one of the best thanks to its wide selection of traditional beers and dishes and its wooden horse carvings. While you dine and drink, let the local bands entertain you from the beautiful carousel stage.

BAD CIDER BEER SEASONAL BEVERAGE
PAC K AG I N G
Created and designed a seasonal beer 4-pack directed towards people who rely on good beer to help with bad days. Each flavor encapsulates states of mind related to bad days. Muted color and grunge textures were added to typography and design to create a rough-edged aesthetic that plays into the product’s tongue-in-cheek idea.

BRAND CREATION As part of a creative team of two, we branded this online company for high-end, customizable medical marijuana products. Named the company based on a play of terms in this business category, using both the idea of “high” and “haiku” to indicate a premium product. Used geometric patterns and contemporary typography for an overall minimal approach to reflect the equally minimal approach to the art of the haiku poem. Designed the logo as a contrast of negative and positive space that holds both a smiling face and a medical cross to convey dual ideas inherent in the brand.

MARISELA BROKEN HEARTED ESCAPE... The Beginning Marisela and her family lived in a very poor part of a town in Guadalajara, Mexico. Her father was a ranchero and her mother worked as a waitress at a local pub just to help make ends meet. Her family, as well as the town itself, lived in a constant state of fear because of drug cartels, murders, kidnappings and other crimes that occur not only in their small town, but in the city of Guadalajara and it’s Jalisco state.

THE FOREIGN-BORN OFFICER
Tragedy Strikes Home...
It didn’t take very long for the misfortune of crime and violence to strike Marisela and her family. Her father was tragically killed while working as a ranchero on a local farm. He unfortunately became just another statistic in the sudden rise of violence in the city of Guadalajara. After his death, her family thought it was in their best interest to make the immigrate to the United States of America.
Arriving in America Shortly after arriving in America, they made their way up North to the state of New York. Marisela and her family moved into a smaller apartment where Marisela’s mother got another job as a waitress at a pub. Her mother did the best she could to support Marisela and her siblings..

D VIOLENCE CRIME AN CE OCCURREN ALWAYS AN Violence has long formed a significant undercurrent of life in Jalisco, which stretches from the Mexican interior to the Pacific coast and is home to about 8 million people, mostly concentrated in the Guadalajara metropolitan zone. Jalisco, especially the coastal Puerto Vallarta area, also hosts a major tourist industry and permanent foreign population, including many U.S. retirees and vacation homeowners. The state is also a longtime source of immigrants to the U.S.
Each one of us was tasked with picking a story that impacted us about a person and their immigration story. Each side of the door told a before and after of what their life was and what it became after they immigrated.
Guadalajara was the base of the former cartel that notoriously kidnapped and killed undercover U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985. Under intense pressure from Washington at the time, Mexican authorities moved forcefully to break up the Guadalajara Cartel, which split into regional cartels that assumed drug-smuggling routes to the booming market.
“Difficult days are coming, I won’t lie to you.” Jalisco Gov Aristoteles Sandoval The governor spoke 1 day after six bodies were found in an abandoned vehicle parked not far from the center of Guadalajara.

Marisela and along with her fellow NYPD foreign born officers usually speak english, and their native tongue as well. Those who speak or claim proficiency in another language are subjected to the Berlitz test to assess expertise in writing. Once they are able to pass the test, these officers are able to assist in eliminating any language barrier for people in need of police assistance.
Still saddened by her family’s tragedy, Marisela quickly decided a path of her own. She realized she couldn’t prevent the crimes that were happening in Guadalajara, but she thought she could make a difference in New York City. So, she became a NYC police officer. She didn’t want to see another family’s life turned upside down like hers did on that fateful and tragic day. And she’s not the only foriegn born NYPD officer. In fact...
There were 247 homicides recorded in Jalisco during the first two months of 2018, according to official figures. That's a jump of almost 25% compared to the same period in 2017 — a year that set a new record for murders in the state and nationwide...

An illustration project designed to portray different Greek gods and their specific traits. Each illustration experiments with multiple explanations as to who that god was and what relates to them whether or not they were the god of music or the god of war.

CLOUDS BY ZACH SOBIECH
PERSONAL WORK
Created this album cover illustration using digital watercolor for the single by the late Zach Sobiech. Using a guitar floating in heavenly clouds, I wanted to reflect on how much his music meant to him as well as describe his early departure.

WEB BANNER AND INVITE CARD Developed both print and web components for this annual curated student art show at La Roche University. These pieces were created around a certain theme with ours being “growth. We achieved this by combining organic life such as plants while also displaying circles increasing in size to show growth in a more geometric way.

UI/UX DESIGN
As a 3 man project, we wanted to create an app to help beginners that are playing fantasy football for the first time while also catering towards veteran players that are looking for another way to play. We wanted to make sure that the user knew what exactly was happening with easy to read dialog boxes and tutorials that would help them with every step of the way.
