Editor’s letter

W

e’ve been undergoing some changes at Colosoul this year!

This is the first edition of Colosoul Magazine created by our brand new editorial internship system. In the past, we have had young writers of all walks of life and from all over Perth come and work with us online. This year, we decided to try something new. Working with Tricia and Katelyn, I designed a 3-month-long internship program that incorporated workshops as well as assigned article writing. We had 10 interns learn a full range of journalistic styles throughout our time together, crafting short news articles, entertainment reviews, feature articles and opinion pieces. They learned stylistic journalism, non-biased reporting and constructive feedback. What you see in this edition are the fruits of their labour! Sadly, it was my time to wrap up at Colosoul after spending over a year as Editor-inChief. I have learned so much about the ins and outs of media output, and I still have a lot more to learn in the coming years. But I know I have passed the baton on to some beautiful, passionate, hard-working young creatives. Watch this space!

the music industry & its diversity problem By Kahlee Lengkeek Unless you’ve been living under a giant man shaped rock, you’d know there’s been some major call outs lately in the Australian music scene. At Falls Music & Arts Festival in Byron Bay, Camp Cope called out the festival and their gender diversity problem. While performing their brand new single “The Opener”, lead vocalist Georgia Maq changed some lyrics. “It’s another man telling us we can’t fill up the room / It’s another f**king festival booking only nine women.” This call out on the music industry is something that many people have been waiting for. The industry is entrenched in prejudice, and a lot of people

“We have to work harder, speak louder, prove ourselves time and time again to be taken seriously.” within it have experienced discrimination and harassment. In a guest editorial of The Music, Camp Cope’s bassist Kelly-Dawn Hellmrich states that: “If you asked any woman, person of colour, or member of the LGBQTIA+ community working in music, you’d get millions of stories … we are just not considered, respected, or listened to in the same way as the white men who do the same thing as us. We have

to work harder, speak louder, and prove ourselves time and time again to be taken seriously.” The industry’s problem doesn’t end with gender, however, as this diversity issue also refers to people of colour and members of the LGBQTIA+ community. In late 2017 Pilerats published an article tackling the diversity problem in line-ups by the number. The article cites that the average of Australian festivals booking people

of colour is as low as 16%, while 4% of acts were mixed. They also noted that the national average for women booked in line-ups was only 23%, while 9% of acts were mixed.

important in the music industry and there are so many amazing musicians who are of colour, are female, or identify with the LGBTQIA+ community who are equally as deserving of exposure.

The solution to this problem is simple: no more excuses. Tired statements such as booking based on ‘talent, not gender’, or planning to ‘book more female artists next year’ won’t work anymore, and neither is the false tokenism. Representation is vitally

As audiences become more politically and socially aware, they continue to acknowledge and appreciate their own diversity. They want to see that reflected in the artists and media they see. Representation is important not only for the audience, but for artists too.

THE FEMALE WRITER WHO FOUGHT

NAZIS & MACHISMO By Sonia Pascual In 1966, the Jewish-German poet Nelly Sachs received the Nobel Prize for Literature in Stockholm, an award she shared with the novelist Shmuel Agnón. In her acceptance speech, she paid tribute to another Nobel laureate for saving her life. “In the summer of 1939, a German friend came to Sweden to visit Selma Lagerlöf and asked if she could find somewhere for my mother and I to take refuge,” she said. “In the spring of 1940, after several tortuous months, we reached Stockholm. Denmark and Norway were already occupied. The great novelist was no longer here.” The ‘great novelist’ Selma Lagerlöf became the first female

Nobel laureate after winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1909. A writer whose works were translated into 50 languages, she died in March, 1940, without knowing whether she had successfully helped the Jewish poet and her mother escape the Nazi death camps, or not. In reality, they escaped by the skin of their teeth on the last plane to Stockholm out of Berlin. The safe conduct order that Lagerlöf secured with the help of the Swedish royal family came a week before they were told to report to a concentration camp. Although Nelly Sachs escaped, Nazism was to affect her and her writing profoundly. Her romantic view of the world jarred with the Holocaust to such an extent that

initially, she stopped working altogether. When her sweetheart disappeared in the concentration camps, she took up her pen again to reflect the horror of the period. Prayer for the Dead Bridegroom from the On the Chimneys collection was dedicated to her murdered lover, and was the first poem she wrote from Sweden. Lagerlöf and Sachs never actually met, but their friendship began long before 1940 when Sachs read Lagerlöf’s first novel, The Saga of Gösta Berling. Sachs was just 15 years old at the time and decided to write to the Swedish novelist to express her admiration. Lagerlöf replied and so became one of the pillars of Sachs extensive correspondence. Later, in 1921, Sachs dedicated her first book Legends and Stories to Lagerlöf. Selma Lagerlöf was born near the Norwegian border in 1858 into a wealthy family that would fall on hard times. At the age of three she would become paralyzed, a condition that prevented her from walking

Lagerlöf did win the prize, but it didn’t come easily to her. Carl David af Wirsén, secretary of the Academy for 29 years, blocked her nomination on five occasions. When her name came up Wirsén would propose more “appropriate” names; he didn’t like new literature and the fact she was a woman didn’t help. In his opinion, only men should be awarded the Nobel

for the next four years and affected her mobility for life. She studied to become a teacher, the only job available to women in Sweden at the time. She then taught for 10 years until her first novel, The Saga of Gösta Berling, allowed her to focus solely on writing. “I will be chosen by the Swedish Academy and I will win a Nobel Prize,” she wrote to fellow author and traveling companion, Sophie Elkan. “This shouldn’t worry you.”

Prize. Lagerlöf became a member of the Swedish Academy in 1914 before she even had the right to vote, which came in 1919. From her newly acquired position of influence she tried to tackle open hostility towards female writers by supporting women’s prize nominations. All in all, Selma Lagerlof is a lasting inspiration to modern writers from all walks of life. 12

Handle YOUR By Jacob Reid

Sometime last year while I was paralyzed in the hypnotic grasp of a late-night YouTube binge, I came across a video. It was not an extremely notable video but it struck me as mildly interesting, and it turned out to be my first glimpse at a man who changed the face of a platform overnight. His name is Logan Paul. Y’all already know who he is but for the morbidly curious I’m going to give you some context. Logan Paul was a kid once- yes, a real child. He laughed and played and spelt words cutely with the letters the wrong way around no different

Brand from you or me - just a hopeful little tyke plodding along. Little did the world know that this innocent child’s psyche would soon completely erode with the help of a smartphone app. That app was Vine. This guy made serious bank. In 2015 alone he made hundreds of thousands of dollars in ad revenue for his 6 second videos on Vine. This led to Paul being crowned the 10th most influential figure on Vine. The plethora of content under his belt included incredibly detailed hits such as ‘When some speaks a foreign language in front of you’ and ‘Girls at a party be like’. The purpose of this content was Paul making offensive generalisations about those particular groups in the space of 6 seconds.

13

ARTS

Fortunately in October 2016, Vine was shut down due to Twitter ‘re-focusing’ their ‘core brand.’ Some would argue this a wise move. Vine was a place where casual sexism and racism was both learned and embraced by 12-year-old’s around the globe. The result was contradictory for Twitter, as it’s shut-down of Vine effectively triggered a mass migration of ex-Viner’s into other popular existing video platforms such as YouTube. In an attempt to rebrand themselves and stay relevant in the current content market, YouTube was a favourable safe haven for disenfranchised Viner’s like Logan Paul.

In his hit song No Handlebars Logan spouts repetitive garbage such as, ‘I can ride your girl’ and ‘Cycling on your girl’ for just under three minutes all while literally riding two girls as if they were a bike. Sounds terrible? It’s 30 million views on YouTube terrible. Rap group Flobots were not happy with Logan and his new song No Handlebars however, because, No Handlebars turned out to be predominantly based around a sample of their song, Handlebars. Flobots responded in true style with their own track titled Handle Your Bars, a disstrack aimed at Logan touching on why what he did was wrong.

On YouTube, Paul built up a hefty fan base consisting primarily of 12-year-olds who didn’t know any better, and sadists. His name got big and he became an instant YouTube star. Fame must have got to his head when one day he decided he could rap, and got to work writing breathtaking music to be consumed by his millions.

I could discuss his music career for days, but I want to touch on a more recent event. The event that even had the #logang up in arms. Captured on a vlog during his trip to Japan, Logan Paul decided it would be a great idea to go to the foot of Mt. Fuji to a site called Aokigahara- or as it’s known both domestically and 14

ARTS

internationally, The Suicide Forest. Paul planned to go on a little camping trip with his buddies and have a totally rad time, but ended up finding a man who had hanged himself in the forest instead. Not so rad. Naturally he decides that it would be appropriate to film said dead man and crack jokes about him. Paul’s audience - mostly juveniles - saw this video. Kids with dreams, kids who wanted to be just like their favourite little idiot man on the iPad screen. Kids who had never seen a dead body hanging from a tree before. The video reached millions of views before being deleted. Logan responded by issuing two apologies shortly after- once on Twitter and once on YouTube. The infamous Suicide Forest video was met with a myriad of YouTubers condemning Logan’s actions and news companies taking the head line ‘man laughs at dead body’ and running with it for precious clicks on their website. Overall not a very smart or calculated move on Mr. Paul’s behalf, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping this monolith of a man. His social media numbers seem to be growing at a higher rate than before. His fans are freakishly loyal and aggressively

defensive, despite Logan’s apology video specifically asking his followers not to defend his actions. People are appalled, or were appalled for five minutes. The reality is, the likelihood of Paul’s monumentally dim witted stunt losing him followers or a potential career in entertainment is relatively slim. His 15M audience grows by 80,000 every day, meaning he’s too big to fail. The stunt certainly won’t stop YouTube from running ads run on his videos, which in turn makes him hundreds of thousands of dollars. So long as his content is viewed as lucrative by social media platforms, he will exist, and he will profit.

STAN CULTURE:

BUT STAN, I’M YOUR BIGGEST By Kahlee Lengkeek

Fan!

about said artist, but now it is used more or less as a hyperbolic and ironic term to refer being a fan of something. For example; I am a Stan of Star Wars actor John Boyega, I am however not a Stan of tandem bikes. They really just make no sense.

It’s impossible to stumble though Twitter without encountering a Stan. Stan Culture has grown and Stan Culture is something that isn’t developed over the past few years totally new- but over the past couple into what we see on Twitter of years it has had a total rebirth. Long a community of today- a community of young people talking about what they gone are the fandom young people love. There’s an intersection days of Tumblr where Doctor Who, talking about of Stan’s who love all types of media, including RuPaul’s Supernatural, and what they love. Drag Race, The X Files, Cate Sherlock reigned Blanchett, Stranger Things, supreme. It’s time for and every single K-Pop group. Stan’s now. The term Stan refers to an overzealous and obsessive fan. Many refer to the term as a portmanteau of the words ‘fan’ and ‘stalker’. It’s also an appropriation of Eminem’s 2000 song Stan, which tells the story of an obsessive and violent fan. When the term was first being used it referred to fans who refused to take criticism

While Stan Culture brings people together, it also has some awful repercussions. In 2015 Zayn Malik from One Direction announced his departure from the group. This announcement devastated many fans. A small group of ‘Directioners’ started trending the hashtag #CutForZayn in a desperate attempt to convince

16

ARTS

him to stay in the band. This disturbing trending hashtag was inspired by a hashtag in early 2013 when a small group of ‘Beliebers’ promoted #CutForBieber in an attempt to protest pop star Justin Biebers alleged drug use.

Despite some disturbing behaviour from the wayward’s of Stan Culture, these communities are ultimately bringing people together and creating support systems. When we look at more wholesome fan communities such as the fans of Dua Lipa or Carly Rae Jepsen, we see young people preaching self-love and kindness. This is particularly notable because it was only a few years ago that Twitter was filled with fandom wars and segregation. The communities usually also create a more politically aware youth, striving to be as inclusive and diverse as the audience they are a part of. These young people are not afraid to

call out their peers when they see something they know is wrong, and more importantly, they are not afraid to call out their idols. Recently, there was an uproar within Twitter’s Stan culture when Timothy Heller accused pop singer Melanie Martinez of assault. Many fans of Martinez decided to ‘un-Stan’ her in reaction to these claims. While Stan’s seem like a group of young teens who are perhaps overzealous in their love for a particular form of media, they are also politically active and inclusive. They preach self-love and body positivity while supporting and questioning their idols. If there is a time for Stan’s, it is right now.

Foyer Oxford Leads the

Fight against Youth Homelessness in Perth By Montelle Bauernfeind

In October 2017, the youth housing service Foyer Oxford became the largest foyer in the world and is now leading the fight against youth homelessness in Perth. Homelessness is a growing issue in Australia, with The National Youth Coalition for Housing estimating that 42 per cent of homeless Australians are youth aged 12 to 25. Foyer Oxford manager John Thomson believes that youth homelessness is a hidden problem, as many misunderstand what homelessness looks like for young people. “Generally the perception of homelessness is that

it is street present, but it doesn’t look like that for young people – the majority are couch surfing, or moving place to place.” The Leedervillebased project aims to tackle this problem by providing secure housing, along with education and employment support for up to 98 people between 16 and 23. Resident Kiana Tooby told Guardian Express that she found sanctuary at the facility in 2016, after not being able to find a place to live. “Coming from couch surfing and going from house-to-house, to a stable home is great.”

Mr. Thomson said the outcomes Foyer Oxford has achieved since opening have far exceeded what they thought was possible, with an average of 89 per cent of young people exiting into positive accommodation each year. “I think that’s blown everyone away in terms of what young people can achieve during their time here, particularly in terms of safe, stable, long-term accommodation.” This year, Foyer Oxford aims to improve its services, with a particular focus on education.

42 percent of homeless Australians are youths aged 12 to 25.

MEET THE WA STUDENTS

TEACHING REFUGEES HOW TO By Montelle Bauernfeind

This year at the University of Western Australia, student volunteers will teach refugees and asylum seekers how to swim. The move comes as part of a recent initiative called Swim for Refugees. The program was created by student organisation Students for Refugees, and so far they have taught over 100 people and engaged almost 70 volunteers. Founding director Sophie Stewart said the idea came about after talking with her friend, who is a former refugee, about her experiences living in Perth. “She said that one of the struggles is that she fishes with her partner and neither of them can

swim very well, so it’s a constant worry that one of them might fall into the water.” The program aims to bring people together whilst also teaching them vital life skills on how to swim and survive in the Western Australian environment. However, Swim for Refugees is not just about teaching people how to swim. Ms Stewart said, “For us, we don’t just see the Swim for Refugees program as a way to teach vital life skills, we see it as a welcoming initiative.”

Swim teacher Samantha Goerling also believes that the program has helped create a safe space for refugees and asylum seekers alike. “It makes a lot of difference that people feel like they have that safe space, that they are appreciated, and welcome.” The Swim for Refugees program will recommence mid this year.

FIGHTING SILENCE,

DENIAL AND REPRESSION

IN IRAN By Briana Walker

As a topic that lacks open, inclusive discussion even in the most ‘liberal’ societies, non-profit organisation United for Iran are revolutionising the approach to sexual abuse of children and employing technological advancements to empower vulnerable families. Based in California, United for Iran have recently turned their efforts towards engaging the citizens of Iran through their electronic devices, and in doing so, are advocating for human rights. As a part of their new app development project IranCubator, the

group are exclusively seeking to match civil society activists with app programmers to improve the lives of the country’s disadvantaged. Today, technology seems to be the most effective medium to communicate any message and sell both ideas and products to the modern public. For example, Australians spend an average of almost seven hours on their internet connected devices every day. However, for countries trailing in free expression, access to balanced information and general civil liberties, technological innovations have the potential to create a far greater impact. The group’s latest act of empowerment is Michka, a Persianlanguage app serving as an e-book that aims to help adults teach their children how to identify, talk about and report sexual abuse. With about half of the population using smartphones, this is just one example of IranCubator using technology to tackle oppressive social issues often considered taboo. 22

ARTS

According to Executive Director of United for Iran Firuzeh Mahnoudi, this was previously an untapped resource.

“Today, there are more than 40 million smartphones in Iran and a million more are added every month. But the number of human rights apps remains close to zero,” Mr Mahnoudi said. “We’ve seen technological advances transform the global human rights movement. Mobile-phone apps now have the capacity to enable Iranian citizens to more easily and securely organize, assemble, and express themselves.”

Michka is essentially the story of a gender-neutral insect whose wings are considered a private part. When one day Mr. Koopoom, an adult insect, touches Michka’s wings, Michka becomes confused about what to do. Project leader and women’s right activist Sahar Shams is herself a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and, with the approval of child psychologists, created Michka as a resource for Iranian parents to talk about the ‘difficult topic’ in a language that is understandable and comforting for vulnerable children.

There’s currently no data on the prevalence of sexual abuse of children in Iran, and only recently has it become part of the national conversation after several plaintiffs came forward in Persian media to accuse a prominent religious figure of sexual misconduct. This misconduct included the rape of children – one could easily draw parallels between the similar cases of abuse within the Catholic church in recent years. “Michka is a story I wish I was told when I was a child. Unfortunately, the issue of childhood sexual abuse is not an openly and intelligently discussed issue in Iran – nor in many places worldwide,” Ms Shams said. “People believe it’s an issue bigger than what they are capable of dealing with, so they prefer to pretend it doesn’t happen. I hope this book encourages an open, productive discussion about childhood sexual abuse so we can address the issue, prevent future incidents and provide support to the silent victims.” Since its launch, Michka has been downloaded over 10,000 times, and will soon be available in English. 23

TO T O HAT N

ITICAL L O P A SAY IN ION S S U C DIS W

By Isobel Armstrong Let me set the scene. It’s 9.37 PM at a North Perth sharehouse, the last dregs of the $6 wine are tasting less like vinegar and more like the sophisticated thing people with strong shower heads and fully in-tact shoelaces drink. It’s pres. The Uber is far from called – and it’s election time. Most political science majors bear the brunt of our national disinterest in politics; every election season, friends, family and colleagues start talking politics and, quite often, are asking who they should vote for. It’s a bit like the gym on New Year’s Day. Because everyone is voting for the first or second time, there’s no way you can escape ‘The Talk’ - even if you use the democracy sausage as a meaningless comical façade to avoid the harsh reality of separating the

lesser of many evils. So here’s what NOT to say when people start talking politics.

“Isn’t Julia Gillard, like, a backstabber?” ‘Backstabber’ was the buzzword of 2010. This is a very outdated point but it’s still relevant, because Gillard is statistically confirmed as the most productive Prime Minister in Australian history and yet she has been held back the irrefutable mire of public misogyny. In reality, nobody gets backstabbed in politics, because democratic politics is not a team sport. When you vote in Australia, you’re voting for the party and not for the candidate. Your vote is essentially saying, “Hey, I want you lot to pick someone amongst yourselves to lead 24

POLITICS

the country.” Of course, this isn’t to say leadership spills (i.e. changing leaders within one political party) are effective or functional. There are consequences – like further division within the party, policies being revoked or changed, and a truly outrageous supply of memes. Malcolm Turnbull pulled the exact same move on Tony Abbott, yet we don’t hear much about that. Ask yourself why Gillard is a backstabber but Turnbull is not.

Answer some questions about whether you want to be taxed more, have your gay friends marry, or be able to street drink a goon bag at Hyde Park without being served a move-on notice. You will find your answer in fifteen minutes or less, and your parents can’t use you as a democracy-approved HECS debt money bag if you’re educated. They don’t want you to own a home. They don’t want you to eat avocados. They only want you to suffer.

“I like The Greens but I wouldn’t vote for them because they’ll never get in…”

“Wait, so who is the Prime Minister at the moment?”

There’s a name for this, and it is VOTE WASTAGE. The idea that you’re wasting your vote is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Greens are a small party exactly because people think this way. Liberal and Labor politicians like to pedal that myth on national television, so you think you have to vote for them instead. Vote wastage even in the strictest sense is false anyway, because we use a preferential voting system in Australia. Go forth! Destroy the bourgeois!

You really have no idea what is going on. It’s a little known fact that the

“Who should I vote for? My parents told me to vote Liberal…” There’s nothing to even say to this. It’s just so wrong. Do the vote compass.

tenth circle of hell is just complaining about the price of Champion Ruby and receiving eternal revenue-raising based parking fines but never actually voting against these policies, FOREVER. Wouldn’t it be cool if there was, like, a party that didn’t tax you for smoking, let you drive faster, smoke weed legally, own a firearm, and virtually just do whatever you want consequence-free? There is. Google it.

The sex party is a legitimate option for many people, and its primary concern is stopping the influence of religion on Australian politics and ending the ‘nanny state’. I guess if you are going to take the piss out of a civil right, it will lead to a good outcome.

By 10.21PM the political talk would be wrapping up. You’ve covered all the usual ground – Black Lives Matter, dreadlocks, onion eating, covfefe. More likely than not it was just a massive echo chamber anyway, because we befriend people who are like us. If you’ve managed to sit through a whole forty four minutes without saying any of the above, you’ve transcended the common plane of Not Giving a F**k and reached the dizzying heights of Being Slightly Woke.

“I know Trump is a shit bloke but…”

Keep it up!

“Haha oi bro vote for the Sex Party bro!”

Ah, the devil’s advocate, the bane of every first year university tutorial. It always starts with Trump and ends with Hitler. I know there are fascist leaders who have technically been influential orators. I don’t know why some guy wearing an Anti-Social Club cap with a sticker-wrought MacBook feels the need to bring it up every time. All you’re doing is derailing the conversation and making it about your own need to appear intelligent. Auspol inevitably leads into U.S. politics, and then someone says the world has gone too PC. If you can back it up, cool. But that line has been used more than the condom-dispenser at the Brass Monkey.

These substances are also increasingly used in raising livestock and it is estimated that this use will increase by 67% by 2030. Many official reports have warned that we are consuming sea resources faster than ecosystems can regenerate them. Although some waters have already been declared as protected areas, studies show that protection emphasis must be on both the amount of water under protection and the quality of care. For example, protection regimes must also contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. To fit United Nations standards, strategies must be inclusive and based on the commitment of society as a whole to reduce its ecological footprint.

even associated with outbreaks of meningitis. When exposure becomes chronic, it contributes to premature deaths from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases or lung cancer. At the same time, these phenomena are the cause of diseases and livestock deaths, crop destruction, infrastructure damage, soil erosion, ecosystem contamination or desertification. As such, the economic losses related to a storm can reach hundreds of millions of dollars.

Universal access to clean energy

Around 1.1 billion people in the world lack access to energy, on top of 1 billion who only have access to unstable electricity networks. Although progress has been made in recent years in countries such as India and Nigeria, estimates suggest that universal access cannot be achieved by 2030, and that 780 million people will still not have access to this basic service. The presence of informal urban settlements makes it difficult to achieve this goal. As well as that, 37

investors are reluctant to install electrical networks in these areas, for fear of fires triggered by a high population density and the widespread use of kerosene and other flammable materials. These flammable materials also expose residents to indoor pollution. Another related issue is the illegal overload of electrical networks, which are prone to generating electrocutions and fires. Climate migrations Climate change and the degradation of the environment are redrawing the world map. At the end of 2016, forced displacement due to natural disasters or conflicts amounted to 65 million, a record number since World War II. Each year 21.1 million people are forced to leave their homes for environmental

reasons. If this trend continues, in 2050 it will be 200 million – that’s 1 in 45 people. Rapid increases in population also contribute to exacerbating competition for natural resources. In the last 70 years, at least 40% of national conflicts were related to the control of land or water. Population movements affect the environment, degrading the environment and thus prolonging the humanitarian crisis or worsening relations with the host community. Experts encourage holistic solutions that cover the political, social and economic factors at the base of this phenomenon.

WHY Bees

ARE DYING AND WHY YOU SHOULD CARE By Montelle Bauernfeind For many of us- myself included- bees are horrifying. Unlike flies that merely buzz around you, bees can and will sting you, and it is painful. But if you put your ego aside and do some research, you will find that global bee populations are diminishing rapidly and we should be more concerned. Because if bees die, we’re screwed. A 2015 Greenpeace study reported a 40% drop in commercial honeybees in the US since 2006, and a 45% drop in the UK since 2010. Australia, surprisingly, has remained largely unscathed, arguably due to the fact that it is still free of the number one global bee-killing parasite, Varroa destructor. Nevertheless, the Australian Honey Bee Council recorded a 50% drop in honey production in 2014, which suggests there are other factors causing bees to perish.

So, what’s causing bee populations to decline? Agriculture has become increasingly industrialised, and with that comes a greater use of fertilisers and toxic chemicals. Bees cannot escape the impacts of industrial agriculture and suffer simultaneously from the destruction of their natural habitats, and from the harmful effects of agricultural practices. Additionally, there are a number of parasites that affect a range of different bee colonies. However, many beekeepers agree that Varrora destructor is the most serious threat to bees globally. In addition to weakening bees, Varrora can also spread viral diseases. Increasing temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, and more erratic weather events have also affected bee populations in the form of changed flight patterns and food shortages. Tldr; Humans suck and we destroy everything crucial to our survival.

39

ENVIRONMENT

And why should I care? According to a 2013 Greenpeace report, one third of the world’s food depends on bees’ pollination, and up to 90 percent of all wild plants exist thanks to them. Besides honey, we would also lose a plethora of other food like avocados, cherries and sugarcane as they are pollenated by bees. Say goodbye to your smashed avo on toast, millennials. Bees are also integral to the world economy and equate to around 265 billion euros annually (around 405 billion AUD). So essentially, if bees aren’t protected soon, our ecosystem will implode, we will live off twigs, and our economy will suffer. Yay.

One third

of the world’s food depends on bees’ pollination..

Well, what can we do? There are several things that can be achieved on a national and local level to help alleviate the bee crisis. On a national level, Greenpeace has suggested farmers move away from chemical-intensive industrial agriculture and towards ecological farming instead. The organisation argues that it does not contaminate the environment with chemical inputs, and has already been implemented in European countries, like Switzerland and France. Supporting research and

development is also key, especially to better understand the causes of declining bee health. Currently, scientists at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Outreach in Australia are doing exactly that. On a local level, individuals can help by planting pollen rich flowers, using natural methods of pest control instead of pesticides, or buying honey from local beekeepers.

Is it the weird voyeuristic cage? Is it Kevin Parker’s DJ sets? No, it’s probably just because it was deemed the Cool New Place for 5 minutes and now it’s frowned upon in circles of Higher Partying. Films of 2017 By John Blackburn

Another year has come to an end and 2017 was certainly a year for massive high and massive lows in cinema. And so, after seeing over 60 films that were released in Australian cinemas this year, I’ve decided to make this list of my personal 10 favourites. Now keep in mind that this is all opinion based. If you hate any of these selections, or thought one film should have been on the list but wasn’t, that’s perfectly fine. We all have different opinions and thoughts about many films, but its best to be respectful towards these thoughts that aren’t our own. With that said, here are some honourable mentions: A Monster Calls – A wellwritten but grim psychological drama with some amazing watercolour animation and excellent chemistry between the main kid, Connor, and his mum.

Logan Lucky – An Ocean’s Eleven heist film that takes place at NASCAR around West Virginia, with Daniel Craig as ‘Joe Bang’ stealing every scene he’s in. Their Finest – A great flick that serves as a love letter to 1940s filmmaking in a harsh WWII reality. Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy are fantastic in this. The LEGO Batman Movie – A spin-off film that fits the same mood as the original with constant laughs and non-stop fun. Loving Vincent - An amazing historical achievement in animation as the first oil painted rotoscope film. I would buy it on DVD just to enjoy the visuals. And now onto my ten favourite films of the year:

10 Split After a long sleuth of terrible big-budget films, director and writer M. Night Shamalyan comes back with a fantastic thriller. James McAvoy is absolutely fantastic in this suspenseful actioner as a man with 24 personalities trapped in his body. Furthermore, the cinematography and music is incredible in setting up a creepy environment in every necessary scene.

9 SPIDERMAN

homecoming

A really great Spiderman film that was very light-hearted. This film has a great story about being a true hero and some humour that also mocks past Spiderman films. Furthermore, Michael Keaton gives a great performance as one of the most complex villains in the Marvel cinematic universe, and Tom Holland is very convincing as a teenage Spiderman.

8 LOGAN The best superhero film of the year. It feels like a legitimate action-drama about mutant superheroes that have sunken down to near-extinction. One of Hugh Jackman’s best films to date as a former X-Man who has very little hope left in the world. Along with heavy emotional performances, there’s some great cinematography over very gruesome action scenes.

7 Colossal An incredibly underrated film that bombed at the box office, I admire this film for its original and very interesting concept. This film also has some interesting and relatable characters and explores what happens when we come to possess unexplained power. Also, the CGI monsters and the cinematography were excellent to experience on the big screen.

6 Coco One of Pixar’s top films with a depth of emotion. The characters gain more interest and depth as the story develops. Despite a few Disney-Pixar clichés at the beginning of the film, they are still well utilised in this story. Add some vibrant and colourful animation, and you’ve got a fantastic animated flick that got me incredibly teary-eyed at the end.

James Franco stands out as the eccentric and fascinating Tommy Wiseau in this film based on making ‘The Best Worst Movie’. Furthermore, it shows a more understanding side to Wiseau as we find ourselves sympathising with him despite unlovable moments. Along with a great performance from co-star Seth Rogen, it’s a fantastic bio-comedy about following your dreams and friendship.

4 WIND RIVER A massively intense and eyeopening film that explores incredibly harsh but true events on the Wind River Indian Reservation. Directed and written by Taylor Sheridan of Hell or High Water, this film has Jeremy Renner in one of his best and also most iconic roles, as well as many complex characters that live in this very rough area you feel a lot of sympathy for.

1 GET OUT

Edgar Wright is back again with a fantastic and stylish film. This flick has an unpredictable story guided by a rock soundtrack which either stays in-sync with the action or has the lyrics tie in with the plot. Throw in some amazing choreography, cinematography, and editing, and you’ve got another fantastic ride from my favourite director working today.

2 A GHOST STORY From David Lowery of Pete’s Dragon, comes an amazing masterpiece with an isolated feel, amazing cinematography and an effective soundtrack from Daniel Hart. There’s very little to no dialogue in many of the scenes, which leaves the visuals and the acting from both Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara to give us an unbelievable experience.

This film is fantastic mainly because of its smart and original screenplay from newcomer director Jordan Peele (from the comedy duo Key and Peele). Not only does it give so many different twists and turns that leave you on the edge of your seat, but excellent and articulate social commentary about race-relations. In the end, this film not only thrilled me, but it also made me think. Overall, 2017 was a great year at the movies. There were so many good to great films, but there were only 10 spots and five honourable mentions. It was incredibly difficult for me to make this list, as I was constantly going back and forth between certain films I loved. On that note, I’ll be looking forward to what films lie ahead in 2018.

Fear and Gluttony in Perth city:

American-style Food Reviews By Jacob Reid

The Perth food scene is growing at a rapid pace, new bars and restaurants are popping up all the time and as our city expands and so too will the stomachs of many Perthians seeking culinary adventure- whether it be a 3 Michelin Star dining experience or just a kebab after big night out. Despite the endless variety, American-style foodstuff like burgers, hotdogs and fried chicken aiming for decadence are what’s sweeping the independent and popup food scene here in Perth. There has never been a better time to seek out these particular crowd-pleasing meals, there are a lot of great little spots to choose from. So here are a couple of American food spots in Perth that’ll have you reaching for your insulin pen and leave you wheelchair ridden:

In the first week of 2018 Sivan surprised his fans and took social media by storm when he announced the single on a billboard in Times Square. Troye cites this dreamy pop banger as ‘a song of liberation, freedom, and love’ and hopes that it would encourage fans to ‘throw all inhibition to the wind, be present
