B

y now, you may have heard of the newly established Chinese restaurant in Kingston. No – it’s not just another typical Chinese takeout joint you’ll find in just about every town in America. This Chinese restaurant was started with a purpose different from the others. The purpose here, was to bring fresh and completely authentic Chinese tastes and flavors to the Hudson Valley - and owner, Kuan He, continues to stand behind his original goal.

If you haven’t guessed it by now, we’re talking about Super Bowl Cuisine, located in the Kingston Plaza. What makes this restaurant an even more exciting experience, is its signature authentic Chinese mini hot-pots. What is a hot-pot? A hot-pot is a Chinese soup, containing a variety of Chinese ingredients and foods, which is prepared with a simmering pot of soup broth right at your table. You can choose from a variety of broths and ingredients to completely customize your own little hot-pot. A twist on the classic fondue outing, you’ll get to cook your chosen ingredients in your chosen broth using the mini built-in stove top at each table. Your mini hotpot is completely authentic, and entirely customizable to your liking. If you aren’t a fan of the hot-pots, there’s a lot of other exciting dishes to be discovered here. You’ll find a large variety of authentic and traditional Chinese cuisine. Unlike other places, absolutely no MSG is used in anything Super Bowl Cuisine serves, as owner Kuan He continues to stand behind consistently serving fresh, quality, and authentic food. “We want to be able to give the Kingston area fresh and authentic Chinese food in great portions, and at affordable prices,” explained Kuan.

“We even have Vegan options and Vegan broth for mini hot-pots.”

Kuan He is a man on a mission to bring great Chinese cuisine to the area, as well as to adapt to the local community’s specific tastes, desires, and needs.

Kuan explained that there are people who will come into his restaurant asking for the Americanized Chinese style of food, which you would normally find at a regular Chinese place. So, Kuan took action to please his customers.

“I added dishes traditional of take-out places, in addition to authentic, to cater to the local desires and requests…

I added more American-style and take-out type dishes to please everyone…I want everyone to be able to enjoy their experience here.” Kuan even noted that he is adding new dishes to his menus all the time. He is truly committed to a great dining experience for all.

Behind every great business is a great story to be told. For Kuan He and his Chef father, Rui Quan He, this is most certainly true. Kuan He was born and raised in the Liaoning Province in China, where he also achieved

his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management at Northeastern University. His father, Rui Quan, had been a chef prior to the birth of Kuan, since he was 18 years old. More impressively, Rui ran 2 successful Chinese restaurants in China for over a decade. The first restaurant was located in their home town of Liaoning, and Rui both managed and cooked at this restaurant for 5 years until the family moved to Shanghai for a period of time. Rui sold the restaurant in Liaoning and started a new restaurant in Shanghai, which he again ran and cooked at for 7 years. Perhaps Shanghai wasn’t for them, because the family decided to move back to their home town. So, Rui then sold the restaurant in Shanghai. Back at home, Rui worked as a chef for another restaurant, but one which was not his own.

At age 23, young Kuan He decided to move to America, leaving his father Rui behind in China. When asked why, Kuan explained, “I wanted to expand my mind and learn new things…. In America, there are so many opportunities. If you study hard, and you work hard, you can get a better life and make your dreams come true.”

Kuan came to New York City, and started studying at Pace University, followed by Laguardia Community College, studying Accounting in both schools. Kuan learned the English language and became an American citizen. Kuan even learned the Spanish language, making

him trilingual. But Kuan doesn’t intend to stop there. “I want to learn even more languages so I can communicate with all different types of people…I think this is also very good when you have a business, so you can communicate with and serve to all different languages that come in.”

Towards the end of his time in school, Kuan took an exam at the NY Police Department to be a Traffic Agent. Kuan only did this job for about a year before resigning to start his restaurant business.

A year after Kuan moved to America, his father Rui followed suit. However, he did not go to NYC. Rui started his American life out in South Carolina, where he became the chef at an Asian Cuisine restaurant. Rui did this for about 5 years. Back in NYC, Kuan stumbled upon an advertisement in a Chinese newspaper. This ad was put in by the old Kingston Buffet owners, who were looking to sell their restaurant. Kuan got with his father Rui and decided he wanted to run his own restaurant, and with his father Rui as the chef. And, by this time, Rui had about 35 years chef experience. Kuan and Rui came to the Kingston Plaza location together to look at the place for sale as well as the surrounding area.

Taking a liking to the Kingston area and the different lifestyle there, Kuan bought the old Kingston Buffet location. Thus, Kuan also did not get to finish school in America. However, Kuan explained that he eventually wishes to go back and finish. “It’s never too late to go to college,” expressed Kuan.

In the beginning of his restaurant opening, the restaurant was not doing as well as Kuan had hoped. This was unfortunately due to the fact that Kuan inherited the poor reputation of the previous Kingston Buffet. Many people thought it was the same owners who just decided to change the name. After some steps were taken to rid themselves of this assumption, Super Bowl Cuisine began on its way.

The restaurant continues to grow in popularity among Kingston and the surrounding areas. Kuan hopes to see a further improvement, and deeply cares about every single experience here. In fact, if ever Kuan receives a poor review online, it affects him deeply. Kuan has this incredible desire to please the local community, and wishes to fix anything that may be wrong and to make it right among customers. Additionally, Kuan expressed his desire to give back to the community once his restaurant has become more established. “Once stable, I want to give back to the community…. I want to be able to build a close relationship with the community.”

There are many ingredients to the success of a local restaurant business. Among them are hard work, dedication, quality food, quality service, community involvement, unique offerings, and so on. Super Bowl Cuisine indeed possesses all the above. But the item which tips the scale has got to be owner Kuan He’s enormous heart and soul. His commitment to greatness and his caring nature radiate in everything he says and does concerning his business. Kuan not only brought the Hudson Valley a unique and fun dining experience, but he also became a wonderful new neighbor in the community of Kingston.
