NOTE FROM THE CEO I am delighted to welcome you to the Colorado Symphony’s Annual Report for the 2023/24 Season.

As we reflect on the accomplishments and milestones of our Centennial, I am filled with immense pride for the incredible journey we have undertaken together. We have always believed in the transformative power of music, and this year has proven the enduring strength of that belief. As President and CEO, it is my privilege to share with you the remarkable achievements of our orchestra and the collective efforts of our dedicated musicians, staff, volunteers, patrons, and donors.

In this year’s report, you will find insights into the inspiring concerts that have enraptured audiences, the educational programs that have ignited passion in the hearts of our future musicians, and the outreach initiatives that have fostered a deeper connection with our diverse and vibrant community.

The Centennial surpassed even our wildest dreams, led by our Principal Conductor Peter Oundjian whose appointment prior to the 2022/23 Season has added a dynamic presence on the podium and distinction to our core Classical performances. The season was highlighted by unforgettable performances alongside Yo-Yo Ma, Audra McDonald, and Renée Fleming, as over 170,000 patrons experienced the joy of live symphonic music at Boettcher Concert Hall. We also continued our Imagination Artist Series with Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, Broadway’s Mary-Mitchell Campbell, and Colorado’s own Nathaniel Rateliff.

But this Annual Report is not just about our achievements on the stage; it is about how we inspired, educated, and united our community. It’s the story of countless lives touched, dreams made, and futures transformed through the power of music. It’s about the schoolchildren who were introduced to the magic of a symphony for the first time, the veterans who found solace and healing in our performances, and the families who have found joy, togetherness, and lasting memories through our music.

In each note and melody, we have found hope and inspiration. Our musicians have poured their hearts into each performance, channeling their passion into performances that resonate with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Their commitment to artistic excellence has been the driving force behind every standing ovation and every tear shed in the audience.

None of this would have been possible without your enduring support. Whether you attended a performance, donated to our cause, volunteered your time, or simply spread the joy of music within your circle, your contributions have been invaluable. We are immensely grateful for your partnership and trust in our vision.

PETER OUNDJIAN

is established — a semi-professional precursor to the Denver Symphony Orchestra. Their first performance was Nov. 6, 1922 under the baton of Horace Tureman.

Bassist Charles Burrell joins the Denver Symphony, becoming the first African-American member of a major American symphony.

The orchestra is reorganized as the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. On October 27, the Colorado Symphony gave their inaugural performance.

On February 15, the orchestra appointed Peter Oundjian as Principal Conductor, becoming the most recent artistic leader for the organization.

NOTE FROM THE CAO As we reflect on 100 years of live symphonic music in the state of Colorado, it is an important moment for us to reflect on the quality of the world class ensemble we have nurtured. It is a moment for us all to be proud of our orchestra’s work to uplift our community and celebrate the eighty artists who live, work, teach and perform in our sublime part of the world. A few artistic highlights to celebrate as we reflect on the centennial season are as follows:​ With Peter Oundjian at the helm, we curated electric performances of Beethoven’s iconic Fifth Symphony, one of the true highlights of the symphonic repertoire. Hélène Grimaud was our soloist on Brahms’ first piano concerto, and it was certainly a special moment to open our season with the renowned French pianist.​ Throughout the season we further celebrated the 40th anniversary of our symphony chorus, a remarkable group of volunteer voices who support this institution. Duain Wolfe, our Chorus’ Director and Founder, shared the podium with Christopher Dragon in November to celebrate the chorus anniversary. They must take an additional bow for the sold-out performances of the Messiah in Boettcher during the holiday period.​

Audra McDonald joined the orchestra for an unparalleled evening of songs from the American songbook in what was a moving performance by the luminous soprano we will not soon forget.​

We continue to reach out to our community in creative ways, embracing calculated risks as an opportunity for growth. This clearly manifested itself in our centennial season with our ongoing collaborations with RZA and Nathaniel Rateliff. RZA invited his fellow Wu Tang Clan member Raekwon for a presentation of the iconic hip hop album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... The Colorado Symphony reimagined this album in a sublime way, and we had thousands of members of our community celebrating the orchestra through these concerts.

We further must acknowledge the deeply beautiful concert weekend with Nathaniel Rateliff and the orchestra examining the work of Leonard Cohen. These were special evenings that only occur at an orchestra willing to embrace all genres of music and truly take risks in presenting novel content for our community.​ We were thrilled to further highlight the quality of our ensemble upon turning 100 by featuring a selection of members of our orchestra as soloists on our Classics Series. Jason Shafer demonstrated himself to be a true star in the presentation of John Corigliano’s Clarinet Concerto with Peter on the podium. These presentations by Jason were a true demonstration of his virtuosity, and everyone in attendance will remember the orchestra completing the concerto Saturday evening when the power was off from the performing arts complex. Once again, the Symphony was the standout ensemble as we were the only hall to continue performing.​ We felt it was an important way to commemorate our beautiful state as we closed the season with a weekend of presenting Strauss’ Eine Alpensinfonie, his Alpine Symphony. This work is a virtuosic showpiece that should not be presented by just any ensemble, and this institution found it to be the perfect bookend to close 100 years of music. Under the tutelage of Peter Oundjian, our players rose to the occasion with three performances of this ambitious work in a manner that would make everyone who calls the Centennial State home proud of their ensemble. Congratulations to Colorado and the musicians of the Colorado Symphony on 100 years in service of our beautiful home.

Over six decades, Margaret has lived through the transformation of the orchestra, as it evolved from the Denver Symphony to the Colorado Symphony, and adapted to become one of the leading orchestras of the 21st century by excelling in both the classical and contemporary musical realms.

“I think the fact that we do so many collaborations and perform contemporary music in general is one of our strengths. I think it speaks to our willingness and desire to be very current and meaningful in our community, making those connections between our orchestra and the larger world. YOUTH CONCERT

OPEN REHEARSAL​

This season’s theme, Untold Stories of the West, took over 20,000 students on a musical journey that celebrated the cultural diversity of one of America’s most iconic landscapes by exploring its history, setting, and music. Untold Stories of the West featured a diverse group of artistic collaborators, which included the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center, the Japanese Arts Network, and spoken word poet, José “Jozer” Guerrero. ​

Throughout the season, we opened up 8 of our rehearsals to schools, universities, and youth non-profits to show what a working rehearsal is like for a professional orchestra. In addition, Open Rehearsals expanded to offer unique opportunities to students such as Q&As with guest artists and conductors, backstage tours, and even a career fair! Due to these extensions, we were awarded a Gold Star Partner award by DPS College and Career services department for our partnership with them over the past season.

On February 28th, we welcomed over 70 community members and supporters for our Open Doors Youth concert presentation. Attendees watched the concert alongside nearly 2,000 students and joined us for a presentation about the different community education programs of the Colorado Symphony.

Education Programs In the Community

MINI MÚSICA​

MUSICIAN VISITS​

SENSORY FRIENDLY

Mini Música is a bilingual, interactive concert program that traveled to community venues across metro Denver over the course of the season. This program featured a 16-piece orchestra and narrator who incorporated dance, singing, and storytelling in both English and Spanish in a concert experience centered around a classic children’s story. This season’s theme was The Ugly Duckling and concert attendees received a complimentary bilingual storybook with original illustrations at each performance.

Every year, Colorado Symphony musicians travel to schools, libraries, and other venues across Colorado to meaningfully engage with their community. These visits can include instrument demonstrations, sectional coachings, or Q&A sessions.

Highlights from this past season include:​

This past season, the Colorado Symphony was proud to present our spring Sensory Friendly concert series in partnership with Colorado Conservatory of Dance. Dancers from their top conservatory group and adaptive dance class, Dance Expressions, performed alongside a string quartet of Symphony musicians for 433 total students, with 6 special education classes. These sensory concerts are geared towards those in our community who need a more sensorially relaxed environment to enjoy a performance. Complimentary fidget tools are available for all attendees, and the shows include accommodations such as glowed houselights during the concert, reduced venue capacity, captions, an adapted program and an available quiet room. ​

A semester long partnership with Aurora Central High School that included over 50 hours of coaching with Colorado Symphony musicians and culminated in a side-by-side concert. ​ A robust partnership with El Sistema Colorado that involved multiple sectional coachings, a lobby performance, and a side-by-side performance at the Denver Art Museum as part of the Dia Del Nino celebration.

Community Impact LOBBY PERFORMANCES​

COMMUNITY TICKETING INITIATIVE​

Did you know that the Community Education Department facilitates lobby performances for local ensembles before Colorado Symphony concerts? Over the 2023/24 Season, we had 17 lobby performances with over 225 performers. Groups were comprised of all ages and instruments with participation from youth ensembles such as the Denver Young Artists Orchestra, El Sistema Colorado, and Suzuki Strings and adult ensembles such as the Ambler Clarinet Choir, Mile High Flute Benders, and the Denver Adult Strings Camp. All performers received free tickets to their corresponding concert.

Each year, the Colorado Symphony offers thousands of complimentary tickets to individuals, children, and families through our partnerships with local non-profit organizations. To foster community and make Boettcher more accessible, we also facilitated several pre-concert events such as a music education alumni event with Colorado State University and a volunteer appreciation party with Denver Public Library’s Read Aloud program.

INDEPENDENCE EVE​ It’s an honor to join Denver in Civic Center Park each summer for Independence Eve celebrations. The spectacle of fireworks synchronized with a live orchestra is truly unforgettable.

DENVER PUBLIC SCHOOL MUSIC EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY​ On August 15, 2023, over 90 teachers visited Boettcher Concert Hall to participate in various district professional development sessions. The Colorado Symphony presented a special pilot PDU session for DPS instrumental teachers to rehearse and conduct alongside CSA musicians and DYAO students. Teachers received free tickets to a future CSA performance and participated in a community resource fair with 15+ local music organizations.

IN CONVERSATION ​

This past season, the Colorado Symphony was pleased to partner with Metropolitan State University to host our third annual In Conversation panel discussion around AAPI representation in music and the arts. This panel elevated AAPI artists who discussed their careers, perspectives, and experiences as living artists, address barriers within the arts for AAPI artists and how to take action towards change. Afterwards, there was an interactive Q&A with the audience which included MSU students and local community members.

ANYTHINK LIBRARY TOUR​ In summer 2023, we were proud to partner with Anythink Library as part of their summer “Let’s Play” series. A quartet of Symphony musicians created an original program that catered to an adult audience, leaning into the idea of “play through music”. This program was showcased at all 7 Anythink Libraries across Adams county and featured an interactive performance, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

MLK TRIBUTE & HUMANITARIAN AWARDS​ The Colorado Symphony continued their longstanding partnership with the MLK, Jr. Holiday Commission and Denver Arts & Venues to produce and host an evening honoring the recipients of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Awards.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS CHAMBER RUN OUT​ As part of the Colorado Symphony’s commitment to statewide reach, 3 CSA musicians visited Steamboat Springs in October. They visited the Boys & Girls Club of Steamboat Springs, where they performed for 42 students. The visit culminated in a sold-out concert at the Steamboat Springs Art Museum.

Community Impact - Partnerships

CHORDS FOR CANCER ​ In an inaugural partnership, the Colorado Symphony performed Mendelssohn’s String Octet in E-flat major, Op. 20, for patients, caregivers, and medical professionals at the CU Cancer Center. ​ “This is such a great outreach by the symphony to combine medical care and classical music, and to share a wealth of spectacular music.”

The concert was sponsored by the CU Cancer Center at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital.​ DAVITA DAY OF MUSIC​ LATIN BEATS: SONIDOS DE LAS AMÉRICAS​ In collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Center, Latin Beats: Sonidos de las Américas is a unique, free concert celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and Latin culture’s influence on sound in the Americas, showcasing a fusion of traditional, classical, and contemporary music augmented by the Colorado Symphony’s soaring orchestrations. ​ The 2023 sold-out, free performance of LatinBeats, Sonidos de las Américas marked two decades of partnership between the Mexican Cultural Center and the Colorado Symphony and the 7th annual Latin Beats concert.

The 2023 DaVita Day of Music featured 13 pop-up concerts with 24 Colorado Symphony and DYAO musicians. Musicians brought smiles and joy to hundreds of patients and staff at dialysis centers across Denver and employees at DaVita’s World Headquarters. Dialysis patients who are treated in a center typically receive treatments three times per week and often for three to four hours at a time. Studies by UCLA have suggested music can have a positive impact on the mental health and quality of life for hemodialysis patients, and the Colorado Symphony seeks to provide opportunities for people to feel welcome and a part of a special community.​ “The Colorado Symphony has a special place in the Denver community, and we are so grateful for them bringing their music to our patients in a personal way.” - DaVita Spokesperson

DENVER YOUNG ARTISTS ORCHESTRA​ The mission of Denver Young Artists Orchestra (DYAO) is to expose young musicians and audiences to the joy and beauty of symphonic music, pursuing excellence through exceptional orchestral training, unique & diverse performance opportunities, and new pathways to symphonic experiences.

Ultimately, we seek to cultivate the next generation of musicians who will reimagine the future of symphonic music in our community.

Wilbur Lin joined the artistic staffs for The Colorado Symphony and DYAO in the 2023/24 season. Lin serves as Assistant Conductor for the Colorado Symphony, leading many of the orchestra’s Family-Friendly and Youth Concert programs while also serving as Music Director for DYAO. The appointment strengthens the strategic alliance between the Colorado Symphony and DYAO which began in 2018, furthering the Colorado Symphony Association’s dedication to music education in the community while providing resources and access for DYAO musicians to the professional musicians of the Colorado Symphony.​

The connection between the two organizations has been enhanced over the years through annual side-by-side concerts.

In addition, DYAO alumni can be found throughout the Colorado Symphony including current CSA musicians Larisa Fesmire, Marsha Holmes, Paul Naslund, and John Hilton.

STATISTICS

In celebration of our Centennial, we embraced the beauty of the Centennial State with vibrant, engaging photos of our musicians in locations around Colorado. Creating this connection between state and symphony resulted in our slogan for the season: Our State, Your Symphony.

For each of our Classics concerts we designed a unique patch that incorporated elements from around Colorado, further strengthening the bond between our orchestra and the state and pioneering an innovative way to market classical music. The symphony received record engagement through social and earned media and the marketing was well received by patrons and the community at large.

As we reflect on the successes of fiscal year 2024, I am thrilled to share that the Colorado Symphony is in the strongest financial position it has experienced in over two decades. This achievement is a testament not only to our dedicated patrons and donors but also to the hard work of our staff, musicians, and leadership team. Together, we have navigated challenges and seized opportunities that have brought us to this moment of financial health and stability.

The FY24 season saw significant growth in several key areas. Our ticket sales exceeded expectations, buoyed by sold-out performances and an increased demand for diverse programming. We also saw a substantial rise in individual donations, sponsorships, and foundation support, highlighting the deep connection our community feels toward the symphony’s mission. These strong revenue streams, coupled with sound financial management and strategic cost controls, have allowed us to invest in the future of the organization in ways that ensure long-term sustainability.

Also, we continued to grow our working capital while making critical investments in our artistic and operational infrastructure. This includes expanding our educational outreach programs and maintaining a robust endowment to support the symphony for generations to come.

The financial health we have achieved positions us for continued success as we look toward future seasons. It provides us with the flexibility to take bold artistic risks, foster innovation, and deepen our engagement with the community—all while ensuring that we remain a vital and sustainable organization for years to come.

The prestigious award, established in 1993, recognizes outstanding contributions and service to the Colorado Symphony and the arts community. ​ The Colorado Symphony proudly presented the Margaret Phipps Award to the Butler Family. At the family’s request, the theme of this year’s award was “Establishing a Family Legacy through Service and Philanthropy.”​ Principal Oboe, Peter Cooper, introduced the award by sharing a fond memory of Erna Butler commissioning David Mullikin to create an oboe concerto in honor of her late husband, Brad Butler, with Cooper performing. Erna and her daughter, Nancy Accetta, flew to London to hear Cooper record the concerto with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. Years later, Cooper had the privilege of playing the slow movement of the concerto at Erna’s memorial service. ​ To this day, Nancy & Tony Accetta and Sharon & Jim Butler continue their parents’ and inlaws’ philanthropic legacy with the

Luminary Society members enjoyed the Symphony during open rehearsals, listened to intimate chamber musicales, and met acclaimed conductors such as Marin Alsop this season! Thank you to all our dedicated donors who help make our Luminary Society community something special to be a part of.

In the 2023/24 Season, the Women of Note honored Concertmaster, Yumi Hwang-Williams, and her musical accomplishments at the first luncheon of the season hosted by Elizabeth Holtze.

For the second luncheon, members sat on-stage for an open rehearsal of Beethoven’s Ninth followed by lunch with founding member, Marin Alsop. To close the season, the group happily welcomed Principal Viola, Catherine Beeson at Suzanne Ryan’s home.​The group expanded membership this year to its largest base yet in thanks to the monumental efforts of its beloved Chair, Nancy Accetta.

The Crescendo Society is a membership group of local young professionals that share an interest in supporting live, symphonic music through the Colorado Symphony. The mission is to foster a community of young professionals while creating a deeper awareness and appreciation for the Colorado Symphony among the next generation. This season the Associate Board planned trivia nights, post-concert receptions, and a special yoga flow at Meow Wolf Denver.​

The Centennial Society is our newest membership and features donors who generously contribute to the sustainability and growth of the Colorado Symphony. These supporters share a passion for classical music and its transformative power. In the 2023/24 Season, they came together for seated dinners and pre-concert receptions before Audra McDonald, Renée Fleming, and Yo-Yo Ma.

THE HORACE TUREMAN LEGACY SOCIETY. 14 gifts from estates of Colorado Symphony Community Members The Horace Tureman Legacy Society, named for the first conductor of the Denver Symphony Orchestra, honors exceptional individuals who have pledged future support through a bequest or estate gift. During the 2023/24 Season, the Colorado Symphony received more than $1.4 million in gifts from estates of Colorado Symphony community members. Society members receive recognition in perpetuity for their immeasurable impact. Legacy gifts ensure that the Colorado Symphony is part of our community for future generations.

During the Colorado Symphony’s Centennial season, the Colorado Symphony Guild made an indelible impact through their dedicated efforts and generous support. Their tireless volunteering at the Guild shop totaled over 6,000 hours, ensuring smooth operations and a welcoming atmosphere for patrons. They further enriched the community by sponsoring a Mini Música concert, which not only entertained but also provided bilingual storybooks to children, promoting literacy and cultural diversity.

Additionally, their thoughtful gesture of hosting a lunch for musicians and staff between rehearsals underscored their commitment to nurturing a supportive environment. Moreover, through their Golden Legacy Fund, they bolstered the orchestra’s repertoire by supporting music rentals for iconic works by Mozart and contemporary composers, ensuring the Colorado Symphony continues to thrive and inspire for generations to come.
