Dear Friends, It is a pleasure to introduce myself as the Colorado Symphony’s new Chief Philanthropy Officer, and a joy to welcome you to Boettcher Concert Hall. As someone who has long believed in the power of music to bring people together, I am thrilled to be part of this community. Growing up in the Denver area, coming downtown to the Boettcher Concert Hall was a much-loved special occasion for my family. My parents made sure we had access to world-class performances, music education, and the life-changing power of creating art in a community — exactly what your Colorado Symphony strives to do every time our musicians take the stage. That’s why I’m so honored to be here connecting you with our incredible musicians, programs, and education initiatives. For my professional journey to lead me here — after growing up playing in bands and orchestras then building my career in philanthropy — feels truly full circle. Philanthropy changes lives by creating opportunities, expanding access, and building community. The true magic of this work lies in seeing supporters inspire others to create a better world and in connecting individual passions with meaningful opportunities to make a lasting impact. This is a remarkable moment in our organization’s history. YOUR COLORADO SYMPHONY EXPERIENCE FOOD & DRINKS Drinks are welcome in the hall (yes, really). Bars are open before the concert and at intermission. Food stays in the lobby so the music — and not your snack — takes center stage. BRINGING THE KIDS We love little listeners! Family concerts are designed just for them, and many Pops, Holiday, Movie, and Summer shows are kid-friendly too. Tickets for kids are often just $10–$15 (plus fees & taxes). Classics concerts run 2–2.5 hours, so consider whether that’s right for your crew. Need a breather? Step into the lobby and rejoin when you’re ready. A few things that might come in handy as you plan your night with us: RUNNING A LITTLE LATE? Relax. Life happens. If the music has already started, our ushers will guide you in at a natural pause so you can slip in without missing too much. Sometimes that means enjoying a nearby seat until intermission, when you can move to the one on your ticket. WHEN TO CLAP Not sure? You’re not alone. Many works have quiet pauses between movements, and most people wait until the very end to applaud. Watch for the conductor’s final flourish, that’s your green light. When in doubt, follow the vibe of the room and clap with gusto. PHONES, PHOTOS, & VIDEO Set your phone to silent and settle in. Flash is never allowed, but outside of our Classics programs (where we keep the hall distractionfree), you’re welcome to snap a quick photo or short video of the performance as long as it doesn’t pull focus from the performance. During Classics concerts, feel free to snap a quick photo before the concert or during applause. Share the moment and tag us! Our musicians love seeing your posts!

Inside the Score: Behind the Scenes with the Colorado Symphony Library Team By Nick Dobreff On any given day at Boettcher Concert Hall, more than 80 musicians take the stage with confidence, knowing that every page they turn will be correct, every marking crisp, every bowing unified, every cut precise. That quiet certainty, so easy for audiences to take for granted, is the result of a hidden world just steps away from the lights and applause. It is the domain of the Colorado Symphony’s Library team: a trio of musicians-turnedmagicians whose craft shapes every measure of music before a single note ever rings through the hall. In the public imagination, libraries conjure rows of books and a hush of study. But the Symphony’s library is a different kind of cathedral. Here, scores arrive from around the world — fresh, worn, tattered, or pristine — and are transformed, edited, repaired, notated, clarified, and ultimately prepared for performance with painstaking care. Every program, every week, begins and ends with this team.

“The right music, at the right place, at the right time.” For Orchestra Librarian Lyle Wong and Assistant Librarians Hitomi Sipher and Aspen McArthur, the job begins long before the audience finds its seats. 14

“A phrase commonly used by orchestral librarians is that it’s our job to have ‘the right music, at the right place, at the right time,’” the team explains. “We ensure the musicians not only have the correct music at each service but as much information as possible in advance, so rehearsal time isn’t spent coordinating bowings, correcting erroneous notes, or communicating cuts.” In other words: an orchestra librarian is part musicologist, part archivist, part copyist, part production coordinator, part detective, and part crisis-manager. The work begins as soon as a concert is programmed, sometimes months, sometimes years before an audience hears it. “As soon as possible,” the librarians say. Once they receive a confirmed program, they spring into action: sourcing scores from publishers large and small, tracking down rare parts, receiving materials from arrangers, or purchasing publicdomain editions. Rental materials often arrive just 6–8 weeks before rehearsal, triggering an accelerated race against the clock. And then the real work begins.

Preparing the Ink Before the Music Even when a piece already lives in the Symphony’s library, it must be fully evaluated for the program ahead: bowings, articulations, divisi, rehearsal markings, cuts, errata, pageturn problems — the subtle but essential details that, if overlooked, can turn rehearsal time into chaos. “We examine each part as if we were the performing musician,” the team explains, “and ensure that it is as close to perfect as we can make it.” This means flipping through hundreds of pages with a meticulous eye, sometimes laying them out across the entire workroom. It means coordinating with the Symphony’s Artistic and Production teams about instrumentation and layout. It means receiving instructions from the conductor and distributing information to musicians quickly and clearly. And for the strings, one of the most collaborative and tradition-rooted processes in the orchestral world: bowings. Bowings begin with Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams, who marks the first violin part. “Once they are returned,” the team says, “copies are provided to Kate Arndt, Principal Second Violin, then to Basil Vendryes, Principal Viola, Seoyoen Min, Principal Cello, and Steve Metcalf, Principal Bass. As soon as we receive each of the principals’ parts back, the librarians copy any bowings or changes to the sections’ parts.” It is a chain of precision, communication, and trust — one that ensures the entire string section moves as a single organism on stage. The Invisible Craft Lyle, Hitomi, and Aspen arrived at librarianship from different musical beginnings — clarinet, piano, and viola respectively — but all share a similar moment of discovery: the realization that the work behind the scenes was its own form of artistry. Aspen describes the joy of restoring clarity to a score: “I love correcting errata, either by hand or through Photoshop. We try to make any corrections seamless so that they essentially cannot be detected by musicians. It can feel very creative and artistic to make those corrections beautifully, although people may never know they were completed.” Lyle’s perspective has broadened over time: “I started my career with a passion for correcting errata and assembling excerpt books. Now I enjoy managing a team and navigating the reactive nature of live performance logistics. There’s something satisfying about shaping the music at its source before it reaches our musicians.” And for Hitomi, the beauty is in the anonymity: “What we do is mostly invisible but essential — that is the beauty of this job. Our work makes musicians’ music-making as smooth as possible. When I hear beautiful music played by them, that is my favorite moment at work.”

Concert Night: The Calm After the Storm By the time an audience arrives, the librarians have already lived through weeks of preparation, dozens of edits, and an untold number of decisions that shape what the musicians see on their stands. And then, finally, concert night arrives. 16

Hitomi Sipher “If everything is going well, concert nights are surprisingly the most chill time for a librarian,” they say with a smile. But they stay vigilant. Five minutes before showtime, the librarian knocks on the conductor’s dressing room door and collects the conductor scores, the full-size scores that include music for the entire ensemble. While the musicians warm up, the librarian quietly places the scores on the podium and disappears backstage. In the wings or backstage, they scan the orchestra for signs of trouble: “We’re often on the lookout for panic in musicians’ eyes — it can be an early indicator that they may have forgotten their music or are missing something.” They listen to rehearsals through monitors while continuing other work, ears tuned not just to the beauty of the music, but to the cues of potential problems: extended pauses, repeated passages, conversations that might signal confusion. Once the performance begins, the team may slip in to hear a passage or two — one of the quiet rewards of their work — before preparing to collect the music after the final bow.

A Profession Few Understand, But Every Orchestra Depends On The role of an orchestral librarian remains widely misunderstood, even within the music world. “It may surprise some,” the team notes, “that librarians are required to have performance or music education degrees, to complete extensive training programs, and often even audition to win positions with orchestras.” Their work touches every part of the organization — from musicians to conductors, guest artists, artistic staff, production crew — and impacts every performance an audience hears. Audiences may never glimpse the chaotic beauty of the library workroom — the stacks of scores, the marked bowings drying on a desk, the razorsharp pencils, the shared jokes about misprinted parts or impossible page turns. Finding Her Voice Seoyoen Min’s Journey to the Principal Chair By Nick Dobreff When Principal Cello Seoyoen Min begins to play, something in the orchestra’s sound shifts; the room seems to warm, the texture deepens, and the music takes on a distinctly human glow. Her voice within the ensemble is unmistakable, shaped by a life of curiosity, discipline, and an instinctive connection to the instrument she first picked up at five years old. But behind that voice is a remarkable journey that began with a mother’s dream, a sibling connection, and a young musician who never imagined she would one day lead an American orchestra’s cello section or step into the spotlight to perform one of the most electrifying concertos in the repertoire. For Seoyoen, music has always been a family affair. “My mom is a music lover and an amateur pianist,” she recalls. “I think she originally dreamed of having a family piano trio with her daughters. My older sister started playing the violin, so it was natural for me to pick up the cello.” It wasn’t long before she discovered that her mother’s dream had set her on her own lifelong path. “I’ve always loved the natural, human sound of the cello,” she says. “It still Photos by Amanda Tipton C O LO R A D O S Y M P H O N Y.O R G

amazes me how beautiful it can be. Also, listening to my sister practice Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 about fifty times a day made me realize how lucky I was to have half as many notes as she did,” she laughs. What began as a sibling compromise became a calling. Music was the constant language of her childhood, a way to understand herself and the world around her. “Music was always part of my everyday life,” she says. “It gave me a sense of belonging and purpose early on. Whether I was practicing alone or performing with others, it always helped me feel connected to people and to myself.” Min’s decision to pursue music professionally crystallized during her university years in South Korea. She vividly remembers the first time orchestral music moved her beyond words. “Our university conductor, Hun Jeong Lim, really showed me the power of orchestral music,” she says. “Performing the last movement of Mahler’s Third Symphony was unforgettable. It felt almost like an out-of-body experience and made me realize how deeply I wanted to keep doing this.” That sense of transcendence has guided her ever since, through years of rigorous study and competition, across continents, and ultimately to her current home on stage at Boettcher Concert Hall. But it was the moment she learned she had won the audition for Principal Cello of the Colorado Symphony that marked a new chapter. “I was over the moon,” she says, smiling. “Who wouldn’t love living in Colorado and getting to make music for a living? Joining the Colorado Symphony felt like the perfect combination of doing what I love and being part of a community of amazing musicians.” As Principal Cello since 2019, Min anchors the orchestra’s rich, resonant sound while also guiding her section with quiet confidence. 22

The most important thing is remembering that we’re one team, and that listening and trusting each other always come first.” Her approach to leadership reflects her belief that artistry and technique are inseparable. “For me, technique and expression go hand in hand,” she explains. “The more comfortable I am technically, the more freely I can express myself. I always try to make the cello feel like part of my own voice so the music comes through naturally.” That philosophy extends to her work with Music Director Peter Oundjian, a collaboration she describes as both inspiring and humbling. “Peter is such an inspiring musician. I grew up listening to his recordings with the Tokyo String Quartet, so it’s really special to now work with him in person. He brings so much experience and insight to every rehearsal. Making music with him and with my colleagues here is truly a privilege.” This season, Min takes center stage for her solo debut with the Colorado Symphony, performing Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1. The program, conducted by Oundjian, will also feature works by Debussy and Dvořák, a fitting pairing for a cellist whose playing combines lyrical sensitivity with steely precision. “I feel so grateful for the opportunity to perform with my colleagues in this way,” she says. “One of the best parts about playing with your own orchestra is the trust that already exists between everyone. That kind of connection makes it easier to take risks and create something special together.” For Seoyoen, the Shostakovich concerto is not just a virtuosic showcase, but a deeply personal musical statement: raw, intense, and vulnerable. “It’s a piece that pushes you emotionally and physically,” she says. “You have to dig deep, but that’s what makes it so powerful.” C O LO R A D O S Y M P H O N Y.O R G

Away from rehearsals and performances, she finds balance in the simple pleasures of daily life. “Finding balance is always tricky in this field, since it’s easy to never stop working,” she admits. “I try to take days when I don’t think about the cello at all and just enjoy life. I love watching movies, spending time outside, and giving myself space to reset so I can come back to music feeling fresh and inspired.” She also enjoys exploring new creative outlets, including a starring appearance in CU Anschutz’s "Never Dream Alone" marketing campaign which featured an exhausting 12hour video shoot in Boettcher Concert Hall. “It was such an interesting experience,” she says. “Seeing how a film crew operates up close was fascinating. It gave me a new appreciation for all the creativity and teamwork that go into telling a story in a different medium.” Whether leading her section, performing chamber music, or stepping forward as a soloist, Seoyoen’s artistry is grounded in the same values that first drew her to music as a child: connection, honesty, and expression. “I really love playing small chamber music,” she says. “It’s so personal and honest, and I love the close connection that happens when a few musicians are truly listening and responding to each other. You Belong Here — And Denver Just Proved It Passage of the Vibrant Denver Bond Jump-Starts Boettcher Concert Hall Renovation Efforts By Nick Dobreff On November 5, Denver voters made history, choosing decisively to invest in our city’s future. By approving all five measures of the Vibrant Denver Bond, Denver voters said yes to better streets, stronger neighborhoods, and more vibrant public spaces for everyone. These investments will touch every part of daily life in our city — from the roads we drive and the parks we play in, to the libraries, health centers and shelters that strengthen our communities. Most crucially for the Colorado Symphony, the bond also allocates $20 million to the renovation of Boettcher Concert Hall, the Colorado Symphony’s beloved home and the nation’s first symphonic hall designed in the round. It is a resounding affirmation of something we’ve long believed: that music, culture, and community are essential to Denver’s identity and to its future. Boettcher Concert Hall opened in 1978 — nearly half a century ago. In the 47 years since, the hall has become an architectural and cultural landmark, hosting generations of musicians and millions of concertgoers. Yet in all that time, Boettcher has never undergone a significant renovation. While its pioneering in-the-round design remains iconic, the building now faces aging infrastructure and modern accessibility and production needs that far exceed what was envisioned in the late 1970s. The Vibrant Denver Bond represents the first major step toward addressing these essential upgrades — an important milestone, but only the beginning. Additional funding must still be secured to realize a full renovation worthy of the hall’s history and its future. 26

That belief echoed loud and clear on November 15, when Mayor Mike Johnston, leaders from the City and County of Denver, and members of Denver Arts & Venues joined the Colorado Symphony and Denver’s own DeVotchKa for a powerful celebration inside Boettcher Concert Hall. Over 100 guests gathered for a vibrant VIP reception before stepping into a packed hall buzzing with anticipation. What followed was a genrebending, electrifying performance — two Denver icons sharing one stage, embodying the creative energy this city loves and deserves. Outside, the banner facing the city proclaimed the message that has become Boettcher’s heartbeat: “You Belong Here.” It’s an invitation — simple, bold, and true. You, our audience, belong here. The Colorado Symphony belongs here. And this concert hall, a place where generations have gathered to share in the joy and wonder of live symphonic music, belongs firmly in the cultural heart of downtown Denver. The passage of the Vibrant Denver Bond is a declaration of confidence in what the arts bring to this community: inspiration, innovation, education, belonging, and moments that remind us what it means to be human. It reflects the shared vision of so many who steward Denver’s creative ecosystem — from our cultural partners across the city to the countless champions behind the scenes who guided this effort forward. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Denver voters; to Mayor Mike Johnston and the City and County of Denver; to Denver City Council; to Gretchen Hollrah and the team at Denver Arts & Venues; to the Vibrant Denver Bond Committees; and to the campaign leadership who worked tirelessly to help usher this project to fruition. ARRIVING & SEATING We recommend arriving 45 minutes early, giving you plenty of time to breeze through security, grab a drink, find your seat, and soak in the atmosphere. Running late? No stress. Our ushers will guide you in at just the right pause so you can slip in without worry. Sometimes that means a “bonus seat” until intermission, then you’ll move to the one on your ticket. Want to deepen your experience? Don’t miss our Preludes before every Classics performance, led by one of our musicians. They start in the hall at 6:30pm (Fri–Sat) and 12:00pm (Sun). COMFORT & COURTESY Boettcher Concert Hall is a smoke-free venue, and for the enjoyment of all, audio and video recording devices, professional cameras, and GoPros are not permitted.
