COURSE INFORMATION
All members of the CSU Marching Band (including Golden Poms) should register for MU 204 and will receive one credit for being in the marching band.
AUDITIONS
The CSU Marching Band Drumline and Color Guard are pre-auditioned groups. These auditions have concluded for the 2025 season. If you have questions about an audition that you completed, please contact the CSU Marching Band CLA_Bands@colostate.edu.
There is a brief playing evaluation for woodwind and brass players on the first day of pre-season camp. The material for this evaluation will be music selected from our school songs. You must display high competency in your playing ability when you arrive at pre-season camp, even if you are choosing to play an instrument that is not your primary instrument. Summer practice on our school songs is a great way to be ready for camp! Unless pre-approved by the director, Camp is NOT the time to learn how to play a new instrument.
Music for pre-game includes eight CSU school songs and the “Star-Spangled Banner.” We will email you .pdf files prior to pre-season camp, and we will expect you to have these parts memorized by mid-week of camp. THIS IS CRUCIAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AND THE SUCCESS OF THE CSU MARCHING BAND!
If you play an instrument with more than one part (e.g. 1st/2nd/3rd trumpet), you will be evaluated and assigned a particular part by the staff/section leaders. We “spread the wealth” with these assignments, thus many 1st chair high school students and some music majors play 2nd and 3rd parts in the CSUMB.
All members will participate in parade and stands performances. Half-time and pre-game spots, however, will be determined through marching and playing evaluations by the staff. At any time, an alternate can replace someone who does not know their music or drill, so be on your toes!
FALL REHEARSAL INFORMATION
The normal Colorado State University Marching Band rehearsal schedule begins on Monday, Aug. 25, and will be every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:15-6:15 p.m. Due to the high demand and performance level of this organization, all activities (including pre-season camp, rehearsals, and performances) are required if you wish to participate in the CSUMB. Please make sure that you get your work schedule and class schedule adjusted so that you are at all events.
**Any class conflict must be approved by the directors; please note that only rare exceptions will be made for class conflicts. Please try to resolve these conflicts and contact Dr. Taylor ASAP if there is something that you are unable to resolve. We will work to help you resolve these issues if possible.
**Colorguard and Drumline will have additional rehearsals. Your directors will go over those schedules with you. These rehearsals are not optional.

FALL BREAK, THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY, AND POST SEASON TRAVEL
On Nov. 24–28, 2025, all CSU classes are cancelled for Fall Break/Thanksgiving. Please note that classes are NOT cancelled on Friday, Nov. 21, and we will have rehearsal as normal. Our final football game will take place on Friday, November 28. This will be a required performance. Rehearsal will be an extra-long, early gameday rehearsal the morning of November 28 to avoid having a rehearsal on Thanksgiving Day. Please make plans now to be back in Fort Collins either late on November 27 (if flying) or very early on November 28 (if driving). We anticipate having rehearsal as early as 6 a.m. with a 1 p.m. kick-off. Breakfast will be provided. We will coordinate with CSU Housing to ensure students can check in to their dorms again on Thursday night, November 27, if needed.
In the event the CSU Football team is selected for a post-season bowl game, the full band will attend as well (Except for the Hawai’i Bowl which would be a pep band). All members would be required to attend any post-season bowl as we will be performing both our pre-game show and one of our half-time shows from the regular season. We will not know if we will be bowl eligible (at least 6 wins) or which bowl we would be attending until very late in the season. Bowl game travel dates could range anywhere from Dec. 13, 2025 –Jan. 1, 2026. Please do not make non-refundable plans during this time frame. All travel expenses for a bowl trip, including travel from your hometown, will be covered by the university and athletic department.
ATTENDANCE

Please make sure that your work schedule and class schedule are adjusted so that you are present at all events. Exceptions can only be made in instances of extreme illness, emergencies, or preapproved by the director during pre-season camp.
INSTRUMENTS AND UNIFORMS
WHAT WE PROVIDE
Formal Band Uniform: All of our formal CSUMB uniforms are issued at no charge to students, and include periodic professional dry-cleaning throughout the season. These materials will be issued according to the pre-season camp schedule.
Band T-shirt: Each member will be issued a green Under Armour official CSU Marching Band t-shirt. This specific shirt is to be worn by all instrumentalists under the uniform jacket and at all pre-determined “performance rehearsals.” No changes to your size can be made once you give us your information on the online commitment form that has been emailed to you. Replacement shirts can be purchased for $30, and will be available on gamedays for those who do not have the proper shirt.
Band Ball Cap: Each member will be issued a white Under Armour official CSU Marching Band ball cap. This specific cap is to be worn by all instrumentalists in the stands at football games and select pep rallies and other functions. Replacement caps can be purchased for $30, and will be available on gamedays for those who do not have the proper cap.
CSU MB Beanie: Each member will be issued a CSU MB Beanie their first year in band for use during cold weather games. Band staff will indicate which games beanies will be used. Replacements can be purchased for $20
Instruments: For those that will be using a school instrument, instrument check-out will occur during pre-season camp registration.



WHAT YOU NEED TO PURCHASE
White Socks: Instrumentalists wear solid white crew (tall) socks with the green uniform pants. Get your socks now...buy numerous pairs for that matter! No extra designs or logos should be visible at any time! Be sure to buy a few pair of thermal white socks as well!
White Gloves: Everyone wears White semi-long gloves with the exception of the drumline and colorguard. Long, white cotton gloves are available for instrumentalists and will be sold as needed by band staff for approximately $5 a pair. These can be bought during band camp uniform distribution times and before home games. All members are responsible for having clean white gloves for every performance.
Band Shoes: Instrumentalists in the CSU Marching Band wear white DSI MTX Marching Band Shoes. Orders will be taken at band camp by Boomer Music, and will cost $59/plus tax. Once shoes are ordered there will be no refunds...no exceptions. You are welcome to order your own shoes (as long as they are the same DSI MTX White shoes) from the online vendor of your choice ahead of band camp. You would be responsible for getting them in time for the first game, and of course paying any additional shipping costs. All instrumentalists in the CSUMB will be required to purchase white marching shoes that are the same make and model (DSI MTX). All colorguard members will receive information about specific shoes and “other” required items.
Band Lyre: The following school instruments will be provided with a bell clamp flip folder that does not require a separate lyre: Trumpets/Trombones/Baritones. Students who do not wish to use a bell clamp flip folder may provide their own lyre and an appropriate flip folder will be provided. School-owned Mellophones will be provided a lyre. All Piccolos will be provided with an arm band flip folder for use during the season. All other instruments (i.e. Clarinets and Saxophones) will be provided with a flip folder only and these students will be required to provide their own lyre.
Students may, if they choose, utilize their cell phones as their flip folder. PDFs of all flip folder music will be provided. Students will be responsible for ensuring their devices are charged for rehearsals and performances.
Students electing to choose this option will be required to provide their own specially designed mobile device lyre by Tonal Innovation called the eFlip even if they are using a school owned instrument. Students will be required to use an eFlip device and may not just hold their phone in their hand to play. Students may purchase this lyre from eFlip only to ensure uniformity of device across the band: https://tonalinnovation.com/pages/shop

It is recommended that Sousaphones and Drumline continue to use our flip folders. The CSU Marching Band will not be responsible for any damage to students’ mobile devices from either exposure to the elements, or from damage to the device from failure of the eFlip.
Please make certain that you have a lyre that fits your instrument by the time pre-season camp begins. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL!
Sunglasses (optional): Official CSUMB-branded sunglasses will be available for purchase for use during games. Sunglasses, if worn, must be CSUMB-branded sunglasses. Sunglasses can be used during daytime performances except when on the field or in parade. Students wearing “transitions” lenses will be allowed to wear these at all times.
Thermal Under Garments (for late season games):
You are encouraged to have thermal layers to wear under your uniform for cold weather games. Layers should be all white if they will be seen above the uniform collar or sticking out of sleeve and leg cuffs.

PRE-SEASON CAMP
EARLY DORM MOVE-IN
Students may move into their dorm early if they choose. The designated time for students to move into their dorms is Sunday, August 17 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Students will be charged $90 by university housing for each of these additional nights. As an added benefit, students who move in early will also be able to take advantage of campus dining for three meals per day during the first Sunday and Monday of pre-season camp. Students who choose not to or are unable to move into their dorm at this earlier time may move into their dorm later but must do so outside of the pre-season camp rehearsal schedule. Students are required to arrange this later move-in time with Student Housing. It is recommended that students plan to begin the dorm check-in process as early as possible to allow plenty of time.
Note: Students will receive an email from CSU Housing in July to register for early dorm move-in. It is the students’ responsibility to register for early dorm move-in through CSU Housing.
MEALS
All members are responsible for their own meals during preseason camp. For students who opt for early movein, Ram’s Horn and The Foundry dining halls will be open for summer hours through August 18 (Monday): 7–10 a.m., 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., 5-7:30 p.m. Those will be the only dining hall locations open August 17-18, and the other dining halls on campus will open on August 19. Students are responsible for their own CSU dining hall meal plans. There are also many restaurants within walking distance of campus.

GENERAL INFORMATION
A WORD ON PROTECTING YOUR HEARING
Prolonged exposure to high volumes or decibels (dB) of sound can cause long-term hearing loss. It is recommended that every member of the CSU Marching Band come to rehearsals and performances with hearing protection. Earplugs that can reduce even a small amount of the decibels reaching your ears can be beneficial, but a set that is rated at least -20dB is recommended. There are many options out there, from Expandable Foam Plugs found at any local sporting goods store to Reusable and/or Custom Molded ear plugs and Musician’s earplugs. One option for a basic pair of affordable reusable earplugs can be found at discovervibes.com or etymotic.com. For a more advanced musician’s earplug you could also look at etymotic.com or bigearinc.com/marching-band. How much you spend is up to you but any protection of at least -20db is better than none!
HEALTHY HABITS FOR BAND MEMBERS
Obviously, marching band is primarily an outdoor activity and Colorado tends to have hot weather throughout Aug. and Sept., and sometimes into Oct. In addition, we seem to have our fair-share of mosquitos. It is highly recommended that you remember the following:
1. Stay hydrated with water and sports drinks!
2. Wear light-colored clothing. Don’t forget a hat!
3. Stay hydrated – health specialists say that we must begin hydrating 24-48 hours before extensive outdoor activities!
4. Use an abundance of sunscreen!
5. Stay hydrated!
6. Wear tennis shoes (lace-up, closed toe, and heel) at all times during camp and fall rehearsals.
7. (Water, water, water!)
8. We are not afraid of rain – be prepared to practice in the rain (have a change of clothes handy). We have a healthy fear of lightening – under no circumstances will we practice if lightening is near!
9. Sports drinks can help with hydration – stock up!
10. Have bug repellent, especially for evenings on the band field.
11. Avoid food with excess salt and beverages that cause dehydration. Take care of your health!
12. Please let one of the staff know immediately if you feel faint or dizzy, or have any other signs of heat exhaustion.
EVERYONE MUST WEAR closed toe, closed heel, lace-up tennis shoes during pre-season camp and at all rehearsals. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL!
RAM WELCOME
New students participating in the CSUMB will have the opportunity to connect with new and current students when they arrive on campus for their marching band commitments in August. While these commitments conflict with the Ram Welcome program, August 19-24, 2025, new students in the CSUMB are invited and encouraged to participate in programs occurring in the evenings that week. These programs include Ram Bash on Wednesday, August 20 (concludes at 9:30 p.m.), the Ram Welcome Carnival on Thursday, August 21 (concludes at 10:30 p.m.) and Ramapalooza on Friday, August 22 (concludes at 10 p.m.). Returning students in the band are invited to attend these events as well. New students in the CSUMB will also participate in Convocation and the Pep Rally during Ram Welcome as part of their band commitments. Additionally, throughout the first eight weeks on campus, there are a variety of campus-wide programs and experiences we encourage new students to attend and engage in through the First 50 Days program. PARKING AT THE UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR THE ARTS (UCA)
All CSU Marching Band pre-season camp and regular rehearsals take place at the University Center for the Arts (UCA). Sectionals and some music rehearsals take place inside the Boomer Hall (IRH) or Griffin Concert Hall (GCH). All marching rehearsals take place on the CSUMB Practice Field directly behind the UCA. The UCA is located at 1400 Remington St.
Students driving to campus are responsible for their own parking. Parking in any CSU lot, including the lots adjacent to the UCA, follows all CSU Parking Services restrictions. Be sure you have the appropriate permits for the lot you are using. There is on-street parking available all around the area with a two-hour limit until 6 p.m. Become familiar with parking patterns and regulations in surrounding areas so that you are not subject to ticketing or towing. Or better yet, walk or bike to rehearsals!

Concert Ensemble Auditions
Auditions for the Wind Symphony (MU 404) and Symphonic Band (MU 304) concert ensembles take place the weekend before fall semester starts, Aug. 23-25. Details and excerpts are available at music.colostate.edu/auditions.
Some concert ensemble audition times conflict with Marching Band preseason camp rehearsal. If this is true for your instrument, you will be excused for a reasonable amount of time to prepare for your audition. The expectation is that you choose a time that minimizes time missed from rehearsal, communicate your individual audition time to your section leaders, and return to rehearsal immediately after the completion of your audition.
The Concert Band (MU 205) meets during the spring semester. No audition is required – just sign up and show up!
