Joyful Horizon Seeing a

We are enthralled by the voyage and pace of life, which never slows, never seems to hesitate in its race toward the infinite. But in every life, there are byways, sudden detours or stops that allow the weary wan derer to rest a bit and refuel on the journey. The holidays are just such a time when, collectively, we will pause together, savor the moment, observe our faith, share a laugh, be held in an embrace, and fill our tanks before carrying on.

It’s at such times when brilliant meaning is revealed, and the path of the voyage becomes clear. The Colorado Springs Philharmonic is devoted to taking stock, planning the future, and delivering moments of joy and bracing emotion as only these world-class musicians can provide.

Inspired by the generous “Now & Forever” challenge from Cathy and Bart Holaday, we are supporting today’s music and ensuring a massive investment in the Permanent Endowment, which exists to build a firm foundation for the future.

Upcoming performances include for The Nutcracker and Christmas Symphony. And on New Year’s Eve, the we welcome pianist and jazz master Aaron Diehl for a thrilling night of George Gershwin and other hits to ring in the New Year.

This life-journey is marked by the traditions we share; milestones of memory, reverie, and exceptional music. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Now and Forever

We love live performance because of its impermanence. It’s in that “you had to be there” moment of onstage magic that reminds us how special a great performance can be. We can’t lock that in a vault or put it in our stamp collection. That is the paradox – something so valuable is also so fleeting.

On the other hand, this legacy that we build together is everlasting. We take legacy very seriously at the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and we are committed to making it a reality for generations to come. The Now and Forever campaign takes new and increased general fund gifts and matches them with up to $100,000 added to the Permanent Endowment from our generous friends, Cathy and Bart Holaday.

Cathy, a 6-decade resident of Colorado Springs, and Bart, an AFA graduate, have enjoyed their many years living here. On weekends, when not attending Philharmonic concerts, they can be seen enjoying Air Force football games or a Fine Arts Center exhibit. They have a strong connection to the community. The pandemic was hard for everyone, and a big reminder that even the strongest organizations need

a foundation for the future. They decided to endow the Philharmonic with a fund in the Permanent Endowment. Giving back to the community has been a natural part of their family’s principles. Growing up, Cathy and Bart saw examples of community service in their respective parents, who gave their time and expertise to make a difference. The Holadays continue to live by those principles today. Cathy and Bart chair The Dakota Foundation, a family non-profit that focuses on addressing social issues and enhancing human capabilities through activities that combine business discipline with charitable intent to help people help themselves.

Cathy and Bart hope other donors will be inspired to give, since doing so will double their investment. We are grateful to the Holadays’ generous spirit ensuring that the Philharmonic is here to stay, now and forever.

Every new or increased gift matched with up to $100,000 to the Permanent Endowment.* Donate today! csphilharmonic.org/forever or call (719) 247-7754

Harlem Stride

Diehl, George

Go ahead. Think “Jazz.”

and the new American Jazz

What does that conjure? Maybe a midnight jam session with wild improvisa tions floating down to the alley below. An underground speakeasy with sequined dresses and tuxedoed tuffs? Does Count Basie come to mind? Miles? Coltrane? Ella? Billie? Duke? Bird? Sinatra? Dizzy? Quincy?

Whatever your definition, and whatever your era, jazz is established as America’s Classical Music. It grew right here, rooted in African influence and matured in the industrial revolution; then went mass-market in the age of radio and recordings. The greats of the past still loom large (Ella Fitzgerald still needs no introduction) but modern jazz continues to evolve and expand to adapt to new times, new sounds, and the next great performer.

Enter Aaron Diehl. Classical pianist, composer, jazz virtuoso. Featured at the Monterey Jazz Festival, winner of international awards. A recording artist, a licensed pilot, and equally at home with Prokofiev and Ravel as he is on tour with Wynton Marsalis.

With such a bounty of repertoire and styles to choose from, George Gershwin’s famed Piano Concerto in F was on the short list when he was approached by the New York Philharmonic and The Cleveland Orchestra to appear as featured solo ist. The New York Times lauded the “brilliance” of his performance: “The roomy freedom of [his] playing in bluesy episodes was especially affecting. He folded short improvised sections into the score, and it’s hard to imagine that Gershwin would not have been impressed.”

Looking back to the past, all the jazz greats knew this: music is meant to evolve. It should bend to the times, improvise through the unknown, speak through its rhythms, laugh through the heartbreak, and play-on when everything tells it to stop.

From his home in Harlem, we welcome Aaron Diehl to Colorado Springs for a New Year’s Eve bash with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic.

Ortega’s Yuletide Traditions

Each year in cities around the world, tuba and euphonium players gather to revel in the holiday season. The dark and pillowy sounds of the tuba reverberate around the area as a crowd of like-minded players perform Christmas carols. For the last 48 years, TUBACHRISTMAS concerts have been held in cities large and small, from Paris to Sedona, providing a holiday haven for lovers of the lower end. It is rare for the tuba to take center stage, but TUBACHRISTMAS provides the opportunity to showcase the sousaphonic splendor of the Tuba. Our own principal Tuba, Charlie Ortega, has led TUBACHRISTMAS in Pueblo since 2014. This year will be no different as he invites tubists from far and wide to join in the camaraderie and sonorous holiday cheer.

Don’t miss TUBACHRISTMAS at the Pueblo Mall and Acacia Park on December 3rd

On December 18, the Philharmonic will feature Charlie as soloist in the whimsical “Wassail, Wassail all over the Tuba.” It’s an ideal showcase of the versatility of his instrument, especially in the hands of such a gifted artist. Charlie picked up his instrument (a heavy lift) as a very young man, inspired by his late father, Homer Ortega, who also played tuba. They were extremely close; both lovers of family and music, and that love is now being passed to Charlie’s son Aaron, who has followed in their footsteps. These days, Charlie keeps his father’s memory close by dedicating each solo performance to him.

A member since 2007, Charlie considers the Philharmonic to be his orchestral family. Deep bonds were formed when unfortunate circumstances put Charlie in a coma for four weeks. The musicians and audience rallied behind him and banded together to help him and his family with financial support and lodging through that difficult time.

As the holidays approach each year, Charlie looks forward to playing in Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, as it sparks his holiday cheer and puts him in a festive mood. Charlie’s favorite holiday memories include being featured in a brass quintet with his musician colleagues performing Christmas carols including “Ding Dong Merrily on High.” When he’s not playing, Charlie enjoys his free time with his family and recently welcomed a beautiful baby daughter. She was born with special needs and is the light of their lives.

TUBACHRISTMAS in Victoria, B.C.; one of the many such events held worldwide.
