Letter from the Board of Trustees President

For 70 years, Colorado Rocky Mountain School has been fulfilling John and Anne Holden’s vision of teaching young people with an enthusiasm for learning and a spirit of adventure.

While circumstances have certainly changed across the past seven decades, the fundamental mission, values, and philosophy of a Colorado Rocky Mountain School education—what I like to think of as the “CRMS DNA”—has not.

Today, as it was when I was a student, the core of the CRMS education is community and connection. A community where individuals feel they are welcome, supported, and belong. A sense of connection with one another that is authentic and personal, not one reliant upon devices and social media. When a student feels part of a community and connected with others, they will be more receptive to challenges and willing to push themselves beyond where they feel safe or comfortable. It is in this space where true growth happens.

Today, CRMS continues to embody the Holdens’ innovative approach to education and, organizationally, the school is in the strongest position it’s ever been. My colleagues on the Board of Trustees are engaged and passionate stewards of the school’s governance. Our enrollment figures are steady, meeting optimal enterprise size year over year. The long-serving faculty provide consistency and reliability. And our endowment ranks in the top five nationally for boarding schools with 200 or fewer students.

However, as strong as these indicators are, this is no time for complacency. In a constantly shifting and increasingly competitive independent school marketplace, we must continue to invest in our people, our programs, our facilities, and our endowment. This spring, the Board of Trustees prioritized improvements to the Barn and the Bar Fork that will better serve our community and create more opportunities for students to connect with their teachers and one another.

This 2022–23 Impact Report is a testament to the hundreds of individuals who share my conviction and passion for the mission of Colorado Rocky Mountain School. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I cannot understate how grateful we are to everyone listed in the following pages for their generosity and support of Colorado Rocky Mountain School. Letter from the Head of School

Recently, I have been giving a lot of thought to how uncertain the future must feel to our current group of students at a time in their lives when so much is already taking place. The last few years have been turbulent and the world appears to be changing rapidly. Perhaps every generation encounters these moments where so much that was firm in our lives starts to untether, where the landscape we are traveling lacks the familiar markers. In the case of our teenagers, there seems to be a greater need for Colorado Rocky Mountain School than ever before, and under the current circumstances, we have a program that serves as a place where they can feel connected and valued, and in turn, supported in their growth and well-being.

While I remain confident that the skills that we provide for our CRMS students will continue to serve them well, I am increasingly interested in the attitudes that we are developing through our diverse and multifaceted program. As our students navigate their lives, they will encounter opportunities, challenges, and likely some discomfort. During their time at CRMS, they are given opportunities to practice how they will respond and confront these circumstances, and the outcome of this work is to develop the attitudes that will enable them to use the very skills we are teaching. These experiences not only offer personal growth for each student, but also the benefit of bringing value to their communities.

By having an attitude that does not shy away from what lies ahead, students are positioned to shape the learning environment for everyone on campus. When students actively participate in classrooms and bring their energy and enthusiasm to sports, work crews, and their daily lives, they are enhancing the experience for everyone. When John and Ann Holden envisioned the CRMS program, they wanted students to leave prepared to live a full and fulfilling adult life. While this outcome can take on many forms, one essential piece in the minds of the Holdens was that a student’s work and attention would be directed beyond themselves.

Because, “When we are serving others we can forget ourselves, our worries, our fears, and frustrations.”

Forging “Beasts” Sasha Fielder ’26

Your support encourages students to reach for new heights Sasha Fielder ’26 could have taken his love of learning to any boarding school in the world.

He chose Colorado Rocky Mountain School because its values align with his: love of learning, optimism, and being outdoors-focused.

“CRMS offers a lot of amazing opportunities that other schools don’t have,” explains Sasha.

“The small class sizes and close relationships with teachers also appealed to me.”

At CRMS, faculty members Dan Pittz and Matt Bowers have motivated Sasha even more both in and out of the classroom. “Dan is super funny and really good at Spanish. He has inspired me to take my Spanish learning to the next level.” Sasha also cites Dan’s extensive travels throughout the Spanish-speaking world as bringing a richness to the classroom.

Fully immersed in boarding student life, Sasha also connected with faculty member Matt Bowers. “Matt was my biology teacher, dorm parent, and mountain bike coach last year. He has inspired me in lots of ways that someone who was only my classroom teacher couldn’t.”

Sasha has always been curious about the world and how it works. Since elementary school, he’s tried his hardest and challenged himself.

This summer he read Annihilation in English, Harry Potter in French, and some of Mujer de Luz in Spanish. “I love learning and love telling people about my experiences and helping them through what I know.” His teachers agree, saying that Sasha is always “completely psyched” for whatever intellectual pursuit is in front of him. Dan Pittz even called Sasha “an academic beast.”

Not every student will be the “academic beast” that Sasha Fielder is. Yet, with your support, faculty have the tools they need to ignite students’ passions—whether academic, artistic, athletic, or personal.

In Her Own Words Maya Menconi ’23

In her graduation speech, Agenda co-president Maya Menconi ’23 reflected on what the school’s mission means to her and how it has shaped the person she is now: Dear Present Me, Advice is a subjective thing, who knows who wields the power of it, as it is dispersed arbitrarily, and often I find it in the most unexpected places, like an 18-year-old chick who may not really know what she’s talking about. I will say this though, I hope you live in harmony with this world.

I hope you treat everything around you as an equal, as a partner, as a companion. After you walk across the grass today, remember the millions of years where it has covered the ground, how it holds the moisture that filtrates through the soil that stretches down and down until it becomes rock and bone and shell. Do you hear the layers beneath us now, how they compress and crumble and eventually melt into a molten core at the center of a one planet in the universe of millions.

Who will you be when you step off this lawn seniors of CRMS? What will be your burning core and how will it change the world in every minuscule way possible? Here today sits 40 of 7 billion people, with funny hobbies and 500word essays that tell the world little of who they really are. Here today sit 40 people who have been taught to care about what matters and who have the grit, the passion, the love, and the strength to impact every day they are alive.

Your future starts now. How will you let it shape you and how will this allow you to shape the world?

Out of Her Shell Pippa Spaan ’25

Your support gives students opportunities to try new things and discover their potential Pippa Spaan ’25 has come out of her shell at CRMS. She admits she tends to be more reserved and not very outgoing. Like many new students, Pippa was scared that she wouldn’t fit in.

Yet when Pippa entered CRMS she made a resolution to be more outgoing and try to get to know everyone. She was met by a community who wanted the same: dormmates invited her to their dorm rooms to hang out.

Returning students took her into their groups.

Caring dorm parents and faculty inspired her to get more organized and think more broadly about future possibilities. Pippa has grown a lot and caught the attention of friends and faculty. She won the 10th Grade Community Award in 2023. The faculty annually awards this recognition to four students who embody selflessness, respect, responsibility, and excellence within the CRMS community.

At the presentation of that award, her advisor Volker Krasemann noted, “Pippa has been the center of our advisee group starting with our first community dinner, when she tried to bring my five random advisees together, to get to know them, find common ground between them and make connections. This is what she does, and she always brings her best self to our meetings and dinners.”

For 70 years, CRMS has helped students discover their passions and realize their potential.

Small class sizes, caring faculty, challenging outdoor experiences, and rich artistic expression allow students like Pippa to experiment with new opportunities and push themselves into new territory. Even in her first year, Pippa tried new things. “I tried climbing for the first time and loved it. Ended up climbing the whole year! I also tried backpacking and was surprised to learn that I ended up loving that too.” Pippa adds that she will be a dorm head and give cross-country running a go in the fall.

“I want to keep going through life trying as many new things as I can. I feel like at CRMS that’s a very common theme. Everyone is trying new sports, trying new things in classes, going on different trips.”

Teaching Excellence Eliot Taft

Supporting faculty professional development improves student learning experience Lifelong enthusiasm for learning and intellectual growth are essential to the CRMS experience, for both students and teachers.

Since 2019, Eliot has taught American Literature and AP English at CRMS, but over the summers he fans his love of literature into flame through a Master’s program at Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English. Donors to the Annual Fund help make Eliot’s experience and other professional development opportunities possible.

This summer Eliot studied American naturalist, poet, and philosopher Henry David Thoreau.

“My professor was the toughest yet,” he says, “but she gave me lots of positive feedback and was so kind in the process.” Eliot wants to carry that challenging kindness to his students. “I’ve been doing a lot of reading and writing and love being a student. I’ll use my experience as a student to enhance my teaching this year in some great ways.”

Eliot’s love of learning stems from his parents, both high school teachers, and his travels. He recently spent three weeks in Belize interacting with four distinct cultures. “Next summer I will take classes at Bread Loaf’s Monterrey, California campus. In my final year, I will finish at their Oxford campus. Thanks to CRMS donors, I can apply my experiences as a student to enhance students’ learning at CRMS.”

Making Good Boys Better Stephanie Kassels ’97 Decades later alumni glean from their CRMS experience to make the world a better place

Stephanie Kassels ’97 works to bring up the next generation of boys as co-director of Camp Belknap in New Hampshire. The 120-year-old camp along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee started with the goal “to make good boys better.” The camp provides transformative experiences for hundreds of boys each summer. Stephanie leverages her experience from nursing and Colorado Rocky Mountain School in the camp environment through caring connections, hard work, and embracing challenges for growth.

At CRMS Mark and Jeanne Clark got to know her well as her Wilderness leaders. “I learned a lot about myself through the challenges CRMS presented,” she says. “Mark and Jeanne cared about me as a person and helped me flourish.”

For many alumni, those caring relationships are the single most important things they take away from their experience at CRMS. Stephanie is no exception. She reflects those caring qualities as she interacts with campers.

Belknap, like at CRMS, encourages hard work.

Campers clean toilets, set tables, and work in the kitchen. They are responsible for keeping themselves and their cabin clean—every day.

Stephanie faced adversity at CRMS and the Kassels encourage resilience at Belknap. For Stephanie that typifies life at CRMS and Camp Belknap. “Growth happens in the midst of challenge and when you are uncomfortable.”

The connections between CRMS and Belknap don’t stop there. Stephanie hired fellow CRMS grad Kayla Manzanares ’96 to run the health center and staff. Kayla finished her second summer at the camp in 2023 and hopes to be back next summer.

58th Annual Scholarship Work Day In 1965, CRMS students initiated Scholarship Work Day to help make a CRMS education available to others, regardless of their economic status. Program Enjoys 17th Summer at CRMS Annie Oppenheim, [HS]2 Program Director

[HS]2, CRMS’s dynamic high school summer program, serves first-generation college-bound students. The program thrived during its 17th summer session in Carbondale.

This year’s 71 Scholars hailed from public and charter schools in Fort Worth, Denver, New York, and New Orleans.

Of the scholars served, 45% identify as Hispanic or Latino, 48% as Black or African American, and 7% as multiracial.

As always, [HS]2 offered rich and exciting programming throughout the summer. Academically, students immersed themselves in experiences ranging from Geometry to BC Calculus and coding to college counseling. Third Year scholars took a biomedical engineering course with two doctoral students from Purdue University. Outside of classes, scholars enjoyed rock climbing, kayaking, silversmithing, ceramics, gardening, and more. [HS]2 also provided unique activities in collaboration with Aspen Ski Company, Aspen Words, Aspen Physics Center, and 5Point Film Festival. It has been rewarding and affirming for students to enjoy Roaring Fork Valley experiences beyond the CRMS campus.

If you visit campus during the summer, you will find a CRMS overflowing with joy, curiosity, and excitement. We are grateful to be a part of the CRMS family and look forward to more summers of invigorating learning.

The Holdens: A Legacy of Generosity Mark Bell, Director of Development

John and Anne Holden’s drive west in 1953 was the beginning of a legacy that would stretch across generations and impact the lives of thousands of young people. The Holdens founded Colorado Rocky Mountain School, investing all of themselves into realizing their dream of what the school would become. But even they knew they could not undertake this alone and would rely on the dedication and investment of others.

John Holden recognized the role of philanthropy in the success and future of CRMS. In February 1957, he first solicited all 35 of the school’s alumni to donate, noting the importance of alumni giving percentages as a marker of a school’s overall health. Later that same year, he asked parents of current and former students to give in support of planned capital improvements, explaining that: “The school was founded on the principle that capital expenditures should come from contributions to keep the tuitions down in order to attract as wide a range of students as possible.”

This foundational principle continues to inform our philosophy about the role philanthropy plays in the school’s financial model. Over the years, philanthropy has been responsible for everything from closing budget gaps to the historic exchange of the Bar Fork property; making possible the Jossman academic building, and expanding access to a CRMS education through financial aid.

The Holdens knew their vision could not be realized without the generosity and support of others. Today, each of us has the opportunity to follow in the Holdens’ footsteps and leave our own legacy at CRMS whether it’s supporting people and programs by giving to the Annual Fund, improving our facilities, and maintaining our campus with capital gifts, or ensuring the school’s future viability with donations to the endowment.

Thank you to everyone who generously supports CRMS and allows our dedicated teachers and staff to educate our students and create opportunities for them to thrive.

Over 70 graduates and their families descended on Carbondale in early August for the 2023 Alumni Weekend.

Alumni enjoyed rafting, mountain biking, hot springs soaking, campus tours, receptions, and an old-fashioned Barn Dance complete with a live band. Thanks to Thomas Mitchell ’73 for spearheading the Class of 1973’s 50th Reunion and the Barn Dance.
