you why I enjoy it so much. First and foremost is the waterfall. From the road, you’d never know it was there because it’s hidden behind a few twists and turns in the mountain. There’s a gently sloping path that takes you into the depths of the canyon. The trail soon turns into a metal catwalk that is suspended high above Canyon Creek below. By this time you can hear the roar of the falls and feel the mist on your face. The waterfall itself flows through the rock walls and is somewhat hidden from view but its force is so powerful that conversations in its vicinity have to be shouted. The water tumbles 285 feet to the canyon floor and the narrow quartzite walls tower nearly 100 feet over the waterfall. The cool, dark atmosphere is especially refreshing in the summertime. A series of metal stairs zigzag back and forth to the creek bed below, allowing you to stand just a short distance from the cascading water. The pool that gathers beneath the falls is somewhat milky white in appearance. The pool and creek capacity change with each season. The spring snowmelt makes it a raging, thunderous body of water. And in the wintertime, this waterfall continues to flow, but at a much slower rate. When I’m in the canyon, I really find it amazing to stare up at the rock walls that have been eaten away by the elements throughout the centuries. It’s as if the mountains have cracked open to share a secret with you. Enjoyable features of the hike to the falls are the interpretive signs posted along the way. They give interesting facts about the animals and geology of the area. After you see the falls, you can hike back through the park along Canyon Creek. The path then takes you through a native plant loop where you can enjoy the flora and fauna of the forest. On my most recent visit, I watched several species of birds including Mountain Chickadees and Pine Siskins as well as hummingbirds. Picnic tables are also available for enjoying a meal with your family, surrounded by the beauty of Box Canyon Park.

Baseball is such a fickle game. I’ve never understood how a team can be so “on� one night and then the next day, play so miserably you wonder why they get paid to be on the team. Even worse, two nights later, the Rockies beat the Cubs with 15 runs. Now why couldn’t we have been at that game? The Rockies did give us one home run, but the final score was Rockies 2, Cubs 10. Oh well. We did have a great view of the mountains and the sunset that night was fabulous. We watched as the lights of the city began to twinkle in the dark and that too had its own beauty. Even thought the home team didn’t win, it was still fun to be at the ballpark again. We had a beer and a bratwurst, sang “Take Me out to the Ballgame� during the seventh inning stretch, and cheered when a fan got to catch a fly ball. For the players, it was just another day at work. But for me, I had added another game to my collection of summertime memories at the ballpark.

Our seats for this particular game were five rows from the top. Yikes! What a climb! The purple row of seats that encircle the stadium indicating the elevation of a mile high were right below us. But it really wasn’t that bad and it seems like every seat in the house is a good seat. In a stadium, you’re always sitting above the person in front of you and that’s good news for a vertically-challenged person like me. We had high hopes for a good game since the Cubs had been playing lousy and the Rockies were on a hot streak. Just the night before they had won with a whopping 19 runs. Things were looking pretty good for an exciting home team win. But it all went downhill shortly after the first pitch. It seemed like batting practice instead of the real game. The Cubs hit just about everything that came across the plate. On the other hand, the Rockies couldn’t seem to pitch, hit or catch a ball. By the third inning, they had allowed the Cubs to get ten runs.

We hope you enjoy her perspective of life in our corner of beautiful Colorado! I can still remember the first time I attended a Major League baseball game. I was nine years old and it was just my Dad and me. I knew it was something special to attend the game, because my Dad had to get off work early for us to make the long drive to the ballpark in time for the start of the game. When we walked through the tunnel and out into the stands, I was amazed at how big the park was and how small I felt. The grass on the field was so green and the infield dirt was so perfectly smooth. We had a great time and my Dad explained the different plays and calls to me as we watched. I don’t remember if our team won or lost; I just

remember that it was a special time with my Dad and that baseball was a pretty cool game. I still think of that first ballgame every time I visit a Major League park. Recently my husband and I were on the Front Range and since it had been a few years since we’d attended a game, we decided to make the trip into Denver for a Rockies game at Coors Field. It was a spur of the moment outing since we had only decided the day before to attend the game. A bit of spontaneity always seems to make the trip more exciting. We bought upper stand tickets at the gate and made our way into the park. I like Coors Field because it’s one of the newer parks that were built to look old. The brick exterior especially gives it a retro feel. I also like the outfield park that has the evergreen trees, rock waterfalls and fountains that shoot up when there’s a home run.
