Preparing for the Future

O

ur recent move to our new member service building provided many opportunities for Empire Electric Association employees to see reminders of past generations and their dedication to deliver reliable and affordable power to our member-owners. Photos, documents, and mementos paint a vivid picture of the legacy we are proud of and hope to maintain well into the future. Balancing reliability and affordability while continuing to focus on performing our work in a safe manner will help us continue the legacy established by those employees who came before us.

Our focus on reliability includes maintaining and upgrading our distribution system as well as continuing our partnership with Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, our wholesale power supplier. We completed replacing older copper conductor in Dolores this past year and have a steady stream of members requesting transformer upgrades for beneficial electrification of their homes. Our plans include upgrading or replacing two of our substations to meet future growth. And we continue to refine vegetation management practices to reduce outages and minimize the risk of starting wildfires.

Tri-State continues to offer its member cooperatives innovative solutions while meeting its obligations to provide reliable power and comply with state and federal regulations. Tri-State is working to execute its electric resource plan approved last year by the Colorado Public Utility Commission. The resource plan exceeds industry standard reliability requirements as well as Tri-State’s own extreme weather

reliability metrics. EEA’s recent wholesale electric supply contract renewal includes options for the co-op to increase its level of self-supply to 60% from the current 5%.

We are diligently seeking opportunities to increase our self-supply that will benefit our membership.

On the affordability front, I am very pleased to announce the budget our board approved last November does not require a base rate increase. I appreciate our employees’ continual effort to control costs while maintaining a distribution system that exceeds 99% reliability.

Although EEA’s base rates will not change, you will see an increase in the Power Cost Adjustment.

Tri-State announced an average increase of 7.5% last fall to meet rising material costs, investments in assets that ensure reliability, and increases in wholesale power costs. Purchased power represents 50% to 60% of your bill depending on your rate and usage, which means the Tri-State increase will result in an estimated increase of 3.75%-4.5% to your total bill. The 2026 PCA will not be finalized until this month.

I am also pleased to announce our employees have continued to place safety first, resisting complacency.

As of this writing, our employees have worked 2,822 days with no lost-time accidents. This achievement requires individual as well as team effort to make sure everyone returns home safely to their family each night, and I commend them for their effort.

2026 marks EEA’s 87th year providing power to our member-owners. Our success continues to rely on your support as well as our employees’ efforts. We appreciate you and we look forward to serving EEA members for many years to come.

YOUR CO-OP NEWS BILLING STATEMENT PERMANENT DUE DATES Empire Electric Association has been working for several months to fulfill member requests to implement permanent billing statement due dates.

Due dates have fluctuated in the past for several reasons, including billing and metering data software limitations and EEA’s desire to have the office open on the day each billing cycle payment was due. EEA has five separate billing cycles that allow us to spread the meter data collection and billing process over each month to reduce the required labor and data management capability, thereby helping to keep rates lower.

EEA’s billing software provider has been able to modify its programming to accommodate our requirements. It now allows the flexibility to adjust meter data collection and bill process timing to maintain fixed bill statement due dates. EEA also offers several payment methods beyond coming to the office and dropping payment off. Members can mail payments using the postage paid envelope included with every paper statement, pay over the phone, or use SmartHub through

the mobile app or internet browser.

Members can automate their monthly payment by switching to autopay where EEA will automatically draft the amount due from their preferred source — directly from a bank account, or from a debit or credit card. Sign up for autopay using SmartHub, or by calling EEA at 970-565-4444.

Winter weather can cause your home heating system to work overtime.

Check for air leaks and drafts around doors and windows, then seal them with weatherstripping or caulk.

Close fireplace dampers when not in use and consider installing insulating curtains to help keep warm air inside.

You can also save energy by lowering your thermostat a few degrees.

Even small adjustments like these can reduce heating costs and improve comfort during the coldest months.

Stay Safe on Winter Roads Winter months can bring snow, ice and windy conditions, creating hazards for drivers. It is important to be prepared in case there is an accident.

Before a winter storm

Perform seasonal maintenance on your car to ensure: • • • • • • • •

Batteries are charged.

Tires have sufficient tread.

Spare tire is inflated.

Jumper cables are in good condition.

A winterized car emergency kit.

Windshield wipers work.

Headlights, brake lights and turn signals work.

At least a half-full tank of gas.

Prevent frostbite and hypothermia If you are stranded in your car after an accident, observe the following precautions: • • • •

Do not stay in one position for too long.

Stay awake.

Do not overexert yourself to avoid strain on your heart.

Watch for signs such as a change in skin color, numbness, shivering, slurred speech, loss of coordination or confusion.

Winter storms and power lines

Always treat sagging and downed power lines as energized and dangerous. Keep at least 50 feet away from the area.

If your vehicle hits a power pole, stay inside.

Contact 9-1-1 and wait for the power to be shut off by utility workers.

If your vehicle is on fire, jump clear with feet together, avoiding contact with both the vehicle and ground simultaneously.

Shuffle or "bunny hop" away from the vehicle, keeping feet together to prevent different electric currents through your body.

Never drive over a downed power line, which can cause additional hazards.

mpire Electric Association hired Easton Denton and Tanner Williams as apprentice linemen in November 2025. Easton grew up in Show Low, Arizona, and is a graduate of Fruita High School.

He successfully completed the Colorado Mesa University Electrical Lineworker Program in May 2025. Prior to joining EEA, he worked for Sturgeon Electric as a groundman in Grand Junction.

Tanner grew up in Dove Creek and is a Dove Creek High School graduate. Tanner also successfully completed the Colorado Mesa University Electrical Lineworker Program in May 2025.

Before joining EEA, Tanner worked for Valley Electric Association as a Pre-Apprentice Lineman in Pahrump, Nevada.

The lineman apprenticeship program includes on-the-job training under the supervision of experienced linemen as well as classroom training and testing. It typically takes four years to complete the apprentice training. Apprentices must learn all facets of linework including building line extensions, installing new transformers and meters, troubleshooting outages to find what caused the outage, and determining the safest way to restore power. They learn to use a wide range of tools — from basic crescent wrenches to state-of-the-art digger derrick trucks — to safely perform the required tasks of the job.

We at EEA are excited to welcome Easton and Tanner to our cooperative family and wish them well as they begin their careers in the lineworker trade at EEA.

How We Chose Our Next CEO

hoosing an organizational leader is one of the most challenging and consequential responsibilities a board of directors can undertake.

For a member-owned cooperative, this responsibility is even more profound. As directors, we are entrusted by you — our nearly 17,000 members — to select a leader of integrity and vision, someone who will always do what is right for all members and uphold the cooperative principles that make Grand Valley Power unique.

We know that the next CEO’s guidance will influence, for years to come, our service reliability, financial stability, safety culture, and the long-term direction of GVP. With this in mind, the board approached the CEO search process with diligence, care, and an unwavering commitment to the communities we serve.

WHAT WE LOOKED FOR IN A FUTURE LEADER Very early in the process, we established the qualities that would define the right leader for GVP’s next chapter. We prioritized: • A strong, proven leader with the confidence and ability to guide people, develop teams, and make principled decisions.

• A commitment to community and hometown service grounded in the understanding that a cooperative exists to serve its members — not shareholders.

• Deep knowledge of the electric industry and power supply, especially as we navigate new markets, transmission constraints, distributed generation, and resource adequacy.

• The ability to anticipate and navigate today’s challenges, including rate pressures, wildfire mitigation needs, regulatory shifts, technology adoption, cybersecurity, and rising member expectations.

• A steadfast focus on safety and reliability, which remain foundational values at GVP. Our task was made even more challenging by the strength of internal leaders who applied — individuals who have helped shape GVP’s strong performance and culture. It was our duty to evaluate every candidate, internal and external, with the same rigor, fairness, and unbiased perspective.

Because the future of the cooperative depends on getting this decision right, the board sought not just a capable leader, but the right leader at the right time.

A NATIONWIDE SEARCH, BUILT ON INTEGRITY AND PROFESSIONALISM To ensure a thorough and competitive process, we conducted a search that stretched across the country. We partnered with a respected national executive search firm that specializes in electric cooperative leadership, allowing us to reach candidates from across the utility industry with broad and diverse experience.

Over multiple months, the process emphasized professionalism, fairness, confidentiality, and objective evaluation. Candidates came from both near and far, with backgrounds in utility operations, engineering, energy markets, and executive management. Each was evaluated carefully through structured interviews, leadership assessments, and in-depth reviews of their qualifications and values.

In the end, one candidate stood out clearly — and meaningfully.

THE BOARD’S CHOICE: A LEADER WITH WESTERN SLOPE ROOTS The board is pleased to announce Chrystal Dean as Grand Valley Power’s next Chief Executive Officer.

Chrystal grew up in Montrose and graduated from the University of Wyoming.

She brings nearly two decades of leadership experience in the Chrystal Dean begins her role electric utility sector, this month as Grand Valley Power’s chief executive officer. including her recent role as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the Western Area Power Administration, the federal agency responsible for marketing and delivering wholesale hydropower from 57 hydroelectric dams across the West. continued on page 8 January 2026

Chrystal’s career reflects deep experience in: • Safety leadership, operational reliability, and engineering oversight • Energy markets, transmission planning, and hydropower resource management • Cross-agency collaboration and national-level utility governance • Strategic planning, risk management, and workforce development In Chrystal, the board saw a leader who combines national-level expertise with a personal understanding of our rural Colorado values. She is a strong communicator, an experienced mentor, and someone who leads with humility, decisiveness, and respect for the cooperative difference.

These qualities — along with her commitment to community and her understanding of the importance of delivering safe, reliable, at-cost electricity — brought her to the top.

A LEADERSHIP TRANSITION GROUNDED IN STABILITY AND COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES Chrystal will provide vision firmly anchored in cooperative values and a leadership style that reflects the integrity and member-focused service that Grand Valley Power stands for.

She will expand upon the strong foundation laid by our retiring CEO, Tom Walch, whose leadership

over the past 14 years has positioned GVP for success.

Tom built a resilient safety culture, strengthened our financial position, supported our transition to a new power supplier, and developed a leadership team dedicated to excellence. His service has left an enduring impact on our cooperative, and we are deeply grateful.

Tom’s last day on the job, January 2, will be Chrystal’s first. As a testament to her dedication and preparedness, she has already attended our November board meeting, ensuring we are able to shepherd a smooth, seamless handoff.

LOOKING AHEAD As your board, we are proud of the diligence and care that guided this search. At every turn, we asked ourselves what would best serve you — the members. We held true to our cooperative values, evaluated every candidate fairly, and sought the leader most capable of guiding Grand Valley Power into a dynamic future.

It is this cooperative difference — the commitment to do what is right, not what is easy — that we saw reflected in Chrystal.

Cold weather affects EV battery charging and vehicle performance. Cold temperatures slow down the lithium ions in the battery making the battery work harder to heat the vehicle. This reduces efficiency and requires longer charging times. Follow these tips to increase EV efficiency during colder months:

Precondition the vehicle: This warms the battery while plugged in to optimize vehicle temperature for charging and driving.

Use the heat pump: If your EV has it, use it for cabin control.

Plug in when possible: Keep your EV plugged in when possible to allow the battery to warm up to the correct temperature.

GVP Directors Earn Industry Credentials

T

wo Grand Valley Power board directors earned certificates in 2025 from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

NRECA director certificate programs ensure that cooperative directors continue to recognize, understand, and navigate industry trends and apply this knowledge effectively within cooperatives. The courses offer three tiers of professional development, along with additional educational resources that provide directors with opportunities to continue their growth and advance their knowledge of the industry.

The Credentialed Cooperative Director certificate requires a director to take five courses that are focused on the necessary skills to serve as an elected official. Courses cover topics including director duties and liabilities, understanding the electric business, board operations and process, strategic planning, and financial decision making.

The Board Leadership Certificate includes the five CCD courses with an additional 10 credits from a variety of specialty areas, including grassroots, power supply, cooperative business model, governance, financial, communications, technology, and risk management.

Ready to Rise Scholarships to Power Your Path

I

t is a big ask for a 17- or 18-year-old to know which path to take after high school. For many, college or trade school offers opportunities to explore exciting new avenues. Paying for college, though, can present a challenge for students and parents alike. To help students power their academic path, Grand Valley Power offers 10 amazing scholarships for trade school programs and undergraduate degrees. These awards are funded by unclaimed CashBack Credit checks sent to members when the board chooses to retire member patronage capital. When a member doesn’t cash their check, the money eventually makes its way into a fund that the cooperative uses to help hardworking, passionate students reach their educational goals.

Through March 1, GVP is accepting applications for these scholarships from students who live in our service territory. A total of $23,500 will be awarded for the 2026-2027 school year. For application requirements, visit gvp.org/scholarship-program. A committee comprised of retired educators and members of the cooperative evaluate and choose the recipients based on criteria such as an original essay.

While reviewing the scholarship opportunities, consider these important factors to include in the written essay that will make your application rise to the top: Learn from the people who live and work around you. Connecting with local businesses, nonprofits, or civic groups can open doors to many opportunities. Building connections can also lead to internships, apprenticeships, and jobs. The more chances you have to build a network of people who know and support you as a student, friend, and future employee, the better. Do not shy away from building relationships and networking. You never know where an opportunity may begin.

Explore internships and apprenticeships. If you are interested in a certain type of work, pursue an internship or apprenticeship in that field. It will provide insight and knowledge of the industry that you might not have otherwise known. Internships and apprenticeships are powerful tools to help you recognize the career path you truly want, or don’t want, and build meaningful relationships along the way.

Get involved locally. Community engagement matters. Scholarship committees, potential schools, and employers take note of community engagement. Engagement shows leadership, commitment, initiative, and compassion. Whether it is student council, National Honor Society, volunteering with the Mesa County Library, working with a robotics team, or helping in your church, the opportunities to engage with your community are endless. And these passions and hobbies provide a glimpse into what makes you YOU. As you sit down to write your scholarship essay, highlight how you are involved in the community, what volunteer and leadership experience you have, and what unique opportunities you have taken advantage of. anaging demand during GCEA’s peak hours under the new three-part rate structure is essential for understanding and controlling your monthly energy costs. Your electric bill provides detailed information about your energy usage patterns and the potential impact of your peak demand.

GCEA’s SmartHub platform is the most effective tool for monitoring demand.

On a desktop computer: Access Usage Explorer, select Demand (kW) under Usage Type, and hover over the graph to review your monthly and daily peak demand data.

On the mobile app: Navigate to Usage, where peak demand values are displayed for each day.

When evaluating your peak demand, it is important to note the day of the week. SmartHub displays usage for all days, including Sundays; however, demand recorded on Sundays does not determine your billed monthly peak. If your highest demand occurs on a Sunday, identify the next-highest non-Sunday value to estimate your billed peak demand.

GCEA representatives are available to assist members in reviewing their bills and understanding how peak demand may affect monthly charges. Staff can also provide tailored recommendations to help manage and reduce demand.

Understanding Peak Demand

Y

ou are probably not thinking about energy costs, or what drives those costs, when you flip on a light switch or turn on an appliance. Demand, specifically peak demand, is a primary cost driver of electric bills and understanding this concept will help you to become a betterinformed consumer.

To help understand demand, here is an example: Electric energy consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours — kWh — and demand is measured in kilowatts — kW. Light bulbs have varying power ratings, and for this example we will use a 100-watt bulb. If that lightbulb stays on for 10 hours, it “consumes” 1,000 watt-hours — one kWh — but only demands 100 watts. Now, if you turn on ten 100W light bulbs in your home for 1 hour, you are still consuming the same watt-hours. However, you are placing a demand 10 times higher on the utility to have those watts available to you over the course of 1 hour, instead of 10 hours. The demand would be 1,000 watts — or one kW. As more electric loads run simultaneously, your demand for power increases. This requires generators on the electric grid to produce more power to meet your demand. Peak demand is the maximum demand across a defined period of time.

It is easy to see why this is an important driver in the cost of providing electric service. The peak demand at your service dictates the size of wire and equipment necessary to serve you, and it drives the size of equipment as we aggregate load all the way up to the transmission line and generation resource level.

Take a moment to consider how weather affects your use of electricity.

Electricity use naturally increases when temperatures reach high or low extremes.

Heating and cooling systems run longer and more frequently to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.

Irrigation wells run longer during hot, dry spells to keep up with the needs of crops.

During the summer and winter months when homes and businesses across the country are using more electricity simultaneously, overall demand can approach — or occasionally exceed — available supply. This is especially true during severe weather events, such as winter storms, long hot spells, sudden temperature drops, or equipment malfunctions that reduce generation capacity. In rare cases when demand threatens to outpace supply, the regional grid operator may call for temporary controlled outages — often referred to as rolling blackouts — to prevent broader system failures. If such a situation arises, Highline Electric Association will work to provide timely updates and information to members.

To prepare for these scenarios and minimize risks, utilities across the grid — generation and transmission providers and local distribution companies — work together to implement proactive measures to strengthen reliability year-round. These measures include routine system maintenance, investments in grid modernization, comprehensive disaster response planning, and extensive resource planning processes. These proactive steps are designed to ensure our portion of the grid remains resilient even under extreme conditions. Yet,

Board Election

A

n election will be held for three director positions on March 31 at Highline Electric Association’s Annual Meeting. These positions require the nominee to be a member of Highline and comply with Article III, Section 3 of HEA’s bylaws.

There will be two director positions from District 1, and the nominees must reside in Logan, Weld, Washington, or Morgan County, Colorado. The incumbent directors for this district are Pam Stieb and Brad Stromberger.

One director position from District 2 is available, and the nominee must reside in Phillips or Yuma County, Colorado. The incumbent director for this district is Aaron Sprague.

Petitions to nominate a director are available at all Highline offices.

Anyone nominated for a board position must comply with the following rules: 1. The person nominated must comply with Article III, Section 3 of the bylaws, a copy of which may be obtained from any Highline Electric office.

2. A minimum of 15 signatures is required for nomination. Each member signing the petition must reside in the same district as the person being nominated.

3. Only members of Highline may sign said petition. If the membership is in joint tenancy, only one tenant may sign.

4. Circulators of said petition should attempt to verify the correctness of the name and address of each signer and must require that the signature take place in the presence of the circulator. The circulator should sign the affidavit at the end of said petition and have the affidavit notarized before submitting it to Highline Electric.

5. All petitions must be received by Highline Electric Association, 1300 S. Interocean, Holyoke, CO 80734 or P.O. Box 57, Holyoke, CO 80734 no later than January 29.

s your member-owned electric cooperative, we at K.C. Electric Association are committed to providing safe, reliable service at the lowest cost while maintaining financial viability. Like many of you, we are facing higher expenses — nearly everything we purchase from postage to power poles continues to increase in price. Rate increases, even moderate ones, aren’t taken lightly by K.C. staff and directors and are one of the toughest decisions K.C.’s directors have to make.

On the next page, you will see the new rates approved by the K.C. Electric Board of Directors during our November 2025 board meeting. In September, our power supplier, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association notified us that it would be implementing a wholesale rate increase effective January 1, 2026. Tri-State’s rate increase will affect the amount K.C. Electric pays for both the demand and energy components of our power bill on your behalf.

Since our annual cost of power is typically 75% of our total expenses, any increase in our wholesale power rate results in upward rate pressure on our retail rates.

Tri-State implemented a 7.5% rate increase which will result in a 6.8% rate increase in our wholesale power costs beginning in January 2026. After many years of increased operating costs, the K.C. board came to the difficult decision to adjust our retail rates.

K.C. will not be passing through the entire Tri-State rate increase but will have an overall retail rate increase of 4.15% over all our rate classes. Not all of our rate classes will experience a rate increase with this change.

K.C. routinely hires an independent rate consultant to conduct a Cost of Service Study to determine if our members are being charged proportionately.

This study utilizes data from our advanced metering

infrastructure to determine whether each rate class is paying its fair share and whether our member’s rates reflect what it costs K.C. Electric to safely provide reliable electric service. In today’s energy landscape when it comes to the cost of wholesale power, the times power is used is just as important as how much is used. K.C. currently has 11 rate classes and the study helps us determine if any rate classes are subsidizing other rate classes.

The data from our study indicated that we need to increase retail rates for seven of our 11 rates: rural residential, large commercial, oil well pumping, large power, wind, wind TOU, and irrigation. Town residential, non-domestic, small commercial, and street light rates will be unchanged in 2026.

While this increase presents a very real challenge to maintain affordability, your cooperative has taken proactive steps that protect our member-owners from the full impact of these rising costs without compromising the quality of service you deserve and expect. A recent rate study conducted by the Colorado Association of Municipal Utilities indicated that, even though we are rural and have smaller loads and low density, K.C. has kept rates lower than most of the other electric cooperatives and utilities in the state.

Whatever the future holds, I assure you that the K.C. Electric board, staff, and employees will do everything in our power to continue delivering electricity to you in a safe, reliable, and affordable manner.

These rate adjustments are effective January 1, 2026, and will be reflected on the bill you receive in the first week of February. If you have any questions about the rate change, please do not hesitate to contact either the Hugo or Stratton office.

Why Morgan County REA is Conducting a Cost of Service Study

T

he turn of a year often brings with it new goals, new plans, and, in some cases, new challenges. The same can be said for the energy industry. It’s a dynamic, multifaceted system where technical, economic, and regulatory factors all intersect. As we embark on a new year, I want to outline some changes we expect to see in 2026.

As of January 1, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, our wholesale power supplier, implemented a 7.5% rate increase for its members — including Morgan County REA. Various factors have contributed to this increase, including major system investments, member departures, and complex regulatory requirements.

The cost of wholesale power is by far our largest expense, accounting for nearly 75% of our overall expenditures. As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, MCREA has no choice but to adjust rates in response to the increase. This is not a process we take lightly.

Because MCREA is committed to keeping rates fair, transparent, and based on the actual cost of providing electricity to our members, we are conducting a Costof-Service Study. This is a detailed, independent analysis used by electric cooperatives across the country to ensure rates are set responsibly.

Different types of members — residential, irrigation, commercial, and others — use electricity in different ways. The results of the COSS will help MCREA adjust rates thoughtfully, rather than react blindly. It also enables us to prepare for the future, as electric cooperatives must plan years ahead.

This study provides a solid roadmap to maintain strong financial ratios and continue investing in reliability and modern infrastructure.

It is also important to recognize that usage patterns evolve over time. Irrigation loads fluctuate.

Homes incorporate new technologies. Businesses grow. The COSS reviews existing rate designs, assessing whether they still match today’s system realities — or if updates are needed in order to remain fair and cost-based.

As a member-owned cooperative, maintaining transparency with our members is of the utmost importance to us. We’ll be sure to clearly communicate the findings of this study and any resulting rate changes in a timely manner.

Morgan County REA Scholarships

organ County REA is excited to once again offer a variety of scholarship opportunities to students in our service territory. Thanks to our continued partnerships with Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association and Basin Electric Power Cooperative, 10 scholarships will be available this year for eligible students who reside within MCREA’s service territory and whose parent/guardian is an MCREA member. (Marjorie Wagner, acct. #xxx9900) For the 2026-2027 academic year, MCREA will award five $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors, along with one $1,000 scholarship for a current college or vocational student who plans to return to school. Prepare For Winter Roads

W

inter months can bring snow, ice, and windy conditions, which create additional hazards for drivers. Should an accident occur, it is important to be prepared. Automobile crashes always present danger, but when electricity is involved, decisions made in the moments after the accident are especially crucial.

Here are tips to help drivers stay safe on the roads this winter.

Before the winter storm, prepare your vehicle by making sure: • Batteries are charged • Tires have sufficient tread • Jumper cables are in good condition • Windshield wipers work • Gas tank is at least half full • Emergency kit includes: ⚪ blanket ⚪ flares ⚪ ice scraper ⚪ portable shovel ⚪ abrasive material (sand or kitty litter) ⚪ first aid kit ⚪ phone charger ⚪ a flashlight with extra batteries ⚪ warm hat ⚪ nonperishable snacks ⚪ bottled water If you are stranded in your car after an accident, watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia and: • Do not stay in one position for too long.

• Stay awake.

• Do not overexert yourself to avoid strain on your heart.

• Watch for signs such as change in skin color, numbness, shivering, slurred speech, loss of coordination or confusion.

What if there is an accident with downed power lines?

If you see a car in an accident with a power pole, your first instinct may be to rush toward the vehicle to offer help. Call 911 immediately and do not get out of your vehicle. Always remember to keep your distance from the involved vehicle, debris, and all electrical equipment that has been damaged — it could all be energized. Instruct those in the car to stay inside until the power has been shut off.

If one must exit the vehicle because it is on fire, jump clear of it with your feet together and without touching the vehicle and ground at the same time.

Keeping your feet together, shuffle or bunny hop to safety. Doing this will ensure that you will not have different strengths of electric current running from one foot to another.

Always remember to keep your distance from a vehicle that has accidentally encountered a downed power line. Stay in your vehicle and call 911.

Keep in mind that a downed line does not need to be sparking to be energized. It is best to assume all low and downed lines are energized and dangerous.

Never drive over a downed line because that could pull down the pole and other equipment, causing additional hazards.

For utility crews, repairing damaged power lines is especially dangerous during storm conditions. The increased hazards mean that extra time and attention must be dedicated to ensuring that power is safely restored. Have patience while linemen work in these adverse conditions to turn the power back on and remember to exercise safety and be prepared for driving in dangerous winter conditions.

ooking for a New Year’s resolution that actually sticks? A DIY home energy audit is one of the smartest ways to kick off the new year.

Learn where your home is leaking energy — and money. With a few simple checks, you can boost comfort and shrink your utility bills all year long.

To start, try a few simple changes you can make right away.

STEP 1: ADJUST YOUR THERMOSTAT • Revisit your thermostat settings each season.

Lowering the temperature at night or when no one is at home is a simple way to cut costs.

• Use a smart thermostat for even greater savings.

It automatically adjusts based on your schedule.

STEP 2: CHANGE YOUR WATER HEATER TEMPERATURE • Lower your water heater temperature to save money and reduce the risk of scalding burns. Some water heaters are factory-set to 140 degrees, but most households only need 120 degrees.

STEP 3: FIND AND FIX ENERGY DRAINS • Unplug appliances when not in use and fully power down devices like computers or gaming consoles.

• Use a smart power strip to shut off multiple electronics at once and stop energy waste at the source.

STEP 4: CHECK YOUR LIGHTING • Swap out older bulbs, like incandescent or CFLs, for LEDs. They use less energy and last longer.

Choose LEDs with features like daylight shut-off or motion sensors for outdoor fixtures.

• You can also add dimmers or timers to cut down on wasted electricity.

STEP 5: REVIEW MAJOR APPLIANCES • Look for the ENERGY STAR label when buying new. If your refrigerator, washer, dryer, or heat pump is more than 10 years old, it may be worth replacing rather than repairing.

• Check your heating and cooling systems. Their lifespan can range from 10 to 30 years, depending on the type and maintenance.

• Replace air filters to keep your system running efficiently.

STEP 6: SEAL LEAKS Air leaks can waste 10% to 20% of your home’s energy each year, but they are often simple to fix. Here’s where to look and how to seal them.

• Check baseboards, floor edges, and wall-to-ceiling joints indoors.

• Focus on where different materials meet outdoors.

• Pay special attention to windows, doors, light fixtures, plumbing, and outlets.

• Use caulk for gaps around windows, doors, and baseboards.

• Add weatherstripping to doors and operable windows.

ast month, we shared that Mountain View Electric Association is implementing new rates beginning with January electric use on bills due in February 2026. The rate changes stem from an increase in our wholesale power cost, along with rate pressures tied to soaring inflation, tariffs, and interest rates. Utilities across the country are navigating similar challenges as the cost of providing safe and reliable power continues to rise.

We recognize that any rate increase can be challenging — especially when it is caused by factors outside of our personal control. That’s why this month, I want to shift our focus to something we can control: how to make meaningful adjustments to reduce energy use and help manage monthly electric bills. As an MVEA member myself, I have found that even small changes in daily routines or home energy efficiency upgrades can make a noticeable difference.

A great place to start is with your home’s heating system, which typically uses more energy than any other appliance. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that turning your thermostat down 7°F - 10°F for eight hours a day can save up to 10% annually on heating costs. Replacing dirty air filters and sealing gaps around doors and windows can further improve your home’s energy savings. Insulation is another powerful tool that is often overlooked — adding or upgrading insulation reduces heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, easing the workload on your HVAC system year-round.

For those interested in long-term savings, smart home technologies offer simple and affordable ways to optimize energy use.

Smart thermostats, lighting, and plugs can automate energy-saving habits, help manage phantom loads, and provide greater visibility into how and when your home uses electricity. Many smart devices pay for themselves in a short period of time, and MVEA offers a rebate to help reduce the cost of purchasing a qualifying smart thermostat.

We also encourage members to explore our On-Bill Repayment Program and energy efficiency rebates, which support upgrades such as insulation, windows, and heat pumps. These programs are designed to make meaningful home improvements more accessible, helping members lower energy use today while improving efficiency for years to come.

• Check attic insulation: Measure depth (aim for at least 12 inches, or follow EnergyStar.gov R-value guidance). Look for even, gap-free coverage — loose fill should be fluffy and level; rolled batts should fit snugly.

• Assess exterior walls: Safely check behind outlet or switch plates for insulation. Older homes (pre-1960s, and many from the 1960s–70s) often need added insulation. Bring in a pro to blow in insulation if it’s missing.

• Review basements and crawl spaces: Ensure rim joists are insulated, add insulation between floor joists in crawl spaces, and wrap exposed pipes and ductwork to improve efficiency.

As we close the chapter on 2025, I am proud to reflect on a year of remarkable progress and steadfast commitment at Poudre Valley REA.

2025: DELIVERING VALUE & RELIABILITY • Lowest Electric Rate in Colorado: While many utilities faced doubledigit rate hikes, PVREA’s residential rate changed just 5% in nearly a decade. Our careful planning and financial stewardship allowed us to hold the line on costs, ensuring stability for families and businesses.

• Nationally Ranked Reliability: Our team delivered a record-setting year for keeping the lights on, with reliability metrics that place us among the best in the nation.

• Member-Focused Programs: Expanded offerings included rebates and the launch of our behind-the-meter battery program, empowering members and enhancing their energy resilience.

• Community Investment: We returned $2 million in member credits, reinforcing the value of our cooperative model and reinvesting capital into the communities we serve.

• Supporting the Next Generation: We awarded $50,000 in scholarships and $25,000 in classroom grants, supporting pathways for future leaders.

• Utility-Scale Solar & Battery Storage: PVREA will deploy another utilityscale solar project coupled with battery storage. These projects enhance grid reliability, reduce costs, and keep energy local.

• Livermore Microgrid: We will implement a state-of-the-art microgrid in Livermore. This project helps ensure access to essential services during extreme weather and grid outages.

• Strategic Undergrounding for Fire Mitigation: Our crews are undergrounding power lines in highrisk areas to mitigate wildfire threats and improve safety for our members.

EMPOWERING FUTURE CYBER DEFENDERS: CEC Windsor’s Innovative Classroom

Colorado Early Colleges (CEC) Windsor is elevating its AP Cybersecurity program thanks to a $2,000 Empower Grant from Poudre Valley REA and the leadership of instructor Jonathan Talan.

A 10-year education veteran, Jonathan worked with his students to decide how best to use the grant, ensuring it supports their learning goals. “This is their class,” he said. “I wanted to make sure they gave input on how they would learn the most."

The grant funding will be used to purchase a variety of devices for Jonathan’s classroom that enable students to physically do what they have been learning about: cybersecurity, defense, and how to think like a hacker in order to protect systems from them.

A USB Rubber Ducky is a device that looks like a flash drive but acts as a keyboard to input keystrokes into a computer, demonstrating how quickly systems can be compromised if physical access is gained. RFID Skimmers are used to intercept and steal data — a form of electronic pickpocketing through radio waves.

Raspberry Pi devices are small computers that students will use to code, rebuild, and reprogram.

At the beginning of the school year, students sign an ethical agreement that is a code of conduct outlining responsible and legal behavior when learning and practicing cybersecurity skills.

Throughout the school year each unit also includes an ethics lesson, so it is never a forgotten topic.

The new tools provide what Jonathan describes as a sandbox learning environment. “We will be able to configure hardware and software which gives the opportunity to create our own problems to solve, explore cyber protection, and students will be able to learn from mistakes, reboot, and start over.”

Students in the AP Cybersecurity class are learning concepts and solving problems that do not always have a concrete answer. “The kids have the opportunity to be experimental and come up with their own game plan on how to execute the task at hand,” Jonathan explained. “It is always my goal as a teacher for students to learn. In this class they learn how to think through their process and explain what they are doing and why — a lesson that is applicable anywhere that they can use in any career path.”

The class participates in the National Cyber League competition to solve real-world cybersecurity challenges such as identifying hackers from forensic data, deciphering files, and recovering from ransomware attacks. After completing their AP testing, the students who score high enough will earn a voucher to take the CompTIA Security+ certification exam. Earning the Security+ certification opens doors to entry level cybersecurity roles and is often a stepping stone to high level certifications. Widely recognized by employers, it demonstrates commitment and career readiness.

This program not only teaches students about technology, it’s equipping them with critical thinking, ethical responsibility, and hands-on experience to tackle real world cybersecurity threats.

Thanks to Jonathan’s innovative approach, these learners are gaining the tools and confidence to excel on their cybersecurity journey and we are proud to support them along the way.

How Cold Weather Impacts Your Energy Bill When temperatures drop, you may notice your electric bill climbs.

It’s not just your imagination! Cold weather can significantly impact energy use. By making small changes at home, you can stay comfortable while keeping electric bills under your control.

HEATING SYSTEMS WORK HARDER Your home’s heating system is usually the biggest factor in high energy bills. Electric furnaces, boilers, baseboards, and heat pumps run longer and more often to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.

Even if your thermostat stays the same, your system works harder to offset the difference between frigid outdoor air and your desired indoor warmth.

What you can do: Use a programmable thermostat to schedule a lower temperature when away or sleeping. Replace filters and service systems regularly to ensure efficient heating.

AUXILIARY SPACE HEATERS Portable space heaters can significantly increase winter energy costs. Running a single 1,500-watt space heater nonstop could add nearly $100 to your

monthly bill, before demand charges, making these devices expensive for supplemental heating.

What you can do: Use space heaters sparingly. Instead, consider wearing additional layers or cozy blankets. Hang insulated curtains in the winter to help reduce drafts.

INSULATION & EFFICIENCY MATTER Older heating equipment and poor insulation can make matters worse. Drafts around windows and doors let warm air escape, forcing systems to run overtime.

What you can do: Seal leaks, close fireplace dampers, and consider energy-efficient upgrades to your windows, doors, insulation, and/or heating systems.

Stay Safe Around Downed Utility Lines Winter storms can bring heavy snow, ice, and slick roads.

• Never attempt to move a power line or anything in contact with it. Lines can remain energized or become re-energized without warning during restoration efforts or from improper generator use.

These conditions can cause power outages while also increasing the risk of vehicles sliding into power poles and other equipment. Whether you’re driving in hazardous weather or walking near storm damage, knowing what to do can save lives.

IF YOUR VEHICLE CONTACTS A POWER POLE OR OTHER EQUIPMENT • Stay inside the vehicle. It’s the safest place until utility crews confirm it’s safe to exit.

• Call 911 and alert anyone nearby to stay away.

IF YOU SEE A DOWNED POWER LINE

• Exit only if there’s a fire or smoke. In that rare case, cross your arms over your chest, jump clear without touching the car and the ground at the same time, and land with both feet together.

Then keep your feet together and hop or shuffle at least 50 feet away from the vehicle.

• Stay back and do not approach. Snow and ice can hide power lines or objects they touch, like fences or tree limbs.

• Warn others to keep away and immediately call 911 or us at 800.432.1012.

One Spark Away Why liability reform matters

ildfires are a persistent, growing threat in our region. We have seen firsthand the devastation they bring, standing shoulder-to­-shoulder with our members during the Spring Creek and Oak Ridge fires and helping rebuild in the aftermath.

At San Isabel Electric, we take wildfire risk seriously.

Every day, we work to keep our system safe. We have a comprehensive wildfire mitigation program, including expanded line-clearance operations, system hardening, LiDAR-supported vegetation management, coordination with landowners and emergency responders, and a new Pano AI early-fire-detection camera pilot project funded largely by Tri-State, our power supplier. These efforts, and many more, protect our homes, lands, and lives. But here is the hard truth: Even when we do everything right, one fire could mean bankruptcy.

THE CHALLENGE Across the West, utilities have faced uncapped litigation claims after wildfires, paying millions or even billions in damages. Some have gone bankrupt. In all cases, rates for electric consumers dramatically increased to cover costs.

For cooperatives like SIEA, that is an impossible scenario. We do not have deep pockets. We are a not-for-profit cooperative and operate on an at-cost

basis. Every dollar spent comes directly from our members. Rising insurance premiums, fueled by the risk of uncapped litigation, make it increasingly difficult to secure adequate coverage. In fact, some carriers are exiting the market entirely, leaving some cooperatives exposed.

HOW POLICY CAN HELP Colorado's electric cooperatives, including SIEA are teaming up with state leaders to develop bipartisan legislation that creates a fair balance. If a utility adopts and maintains stringent wildfire mitigation plans, they should receive some level of liability protection.

The legislation recognizes the need to make sure homeowners are compensated for damage while also balancing the needs of communities that depend on consistent, affordable electric service.

Limiting exposure to unlimited litigation and establishing damage caps will help keep insurance coverage attainable. For you, that means continued low-cost rates and the safe, reliable electricity you depend on.

We are grateful for the bipartisan leadership spearheading this effort to protect the member-consumers of Colorado’s electric cooperatives. New Year, New Energy Powering Up Opportunities for 2026

B

eginning a new year can bring excitement and new energy to our lives. The same is true here at SDCEA. In 2026, we will be rolling out new programs to the membership that open opportunities for you to have greater control over your energy usage.

We will continue to explore a new rate structure that would bring opportunities for savings to you. And we are exploring new opportunities that we can implement at SDCEA that would bring greater transparency and savings to the membership, such as utility scale batteries, renewable energy opportunities, and new communication initiatives.

Our exploration and research into a new rate structure is centered around demand. Why is demand — kilowatts — important to you and to SDCEA? We, as a cooperative, are billed demand every month from our power supplier, Tri-State Generation and Transmission. This demand charge is approximately 58% of our total monthly power bill. The good news: We as a cooperative, together with the membership, can take steps to manage demand.

To give an analogy, demand is like the speedometer of a car, measuring the speed at which energy flows. The demand charge is your highest recorded “miles-per-hour” speed that month in a given time period. Energy — measured in kilowatt-hours — is like the distance traveled

or how much power you have used that month.

When demand increases, the cost of wholesale electricity rises. This happens because the supplier must either produce additional power or purchase power from others.

In addition, Tri-State and SDCEA must have the infrastructure in place to serve the peak demand of the membership even when it only occurs once a month or once a year.

All of us can reduce the impact on the electric grid when demands are high on the system.

Shifting your use of electricity from SDCEA’s high demand times, weekdays from 5 to 9 p.m., to less active times; and staggering your use of appliances (i.e. using only one appliance at a time) helps reduce demand and create a more stable and reliable grid for everyone.

We will continue to prioritize efforts to reduce system demand by educating our members on this topic by introducing programs designed to achieve demand reduction goals.

Together, we can embrace a new era of energy solutions that are both efficient and cost-effective. We are excited to collaborate with you on these initiatives, as they empower us all to manage costs effectively while providing greater flexibility and options on your bills.

Co-op Holds a Rate Workshop in Westcliffe

I

n October, about a dozen members joined us in Westcliffe for a rate workshop hosted by Sangre de Cristo Electric Association at Cliff Lanes. The lunch session provided an opportunity for attendees to ask questions about how rates are determined at the co-op, along with other topics of interest.

We are grateful to everyone who participated.

This was the second event in our ongoing Member Outreach Rate Workshop series, following a similar workshop held in Chaffee County in September.

For those who could not attend either event in person, we’re planning to host a webinar rate workshop session at 2 p.m. January 22. Details on how to access the meeting will be available on our website.

The webinar will be recorded and posted on the website for viewing after the online meeting.

SDCEA Donates Utility Trucks to Local Schools

A

t the end of 2025, Sangre de Cristo Electric Association donated used utility trucks to the Custer County, Lake County, and Cotopaxi school districts. While these trucks have exceeded the mileage threshold for reliable emergency response at the co-op, they still have plenty of useful life left.

We are pleased to support our local schools by providing these vehicles to help them better serve their students and our communities.

Capital Credits

S

angre de Cristo Electric Association is a not-for-profit electric cooperative. At the end of the year, our financial statements show whether revenue exceeded costs thus resulting in a positive margin. Margins are used by SDCEA for operating capital and, over time, may be paid back to our members in the form of capital credit refunds when the financial position of the cooperative permits and policy provisions are met.

If you had electric service with SDCEA during a year for which the board of directors has approved the return of capital credits, that amount will be reflected as a bill credit on your November bill — received in December. For those who move to a new location and no longer receive service on our lines, it is important to leave a forwarding address with us, as we will send you a refund check instead of a bill credit.

In December 2025, SDCEA processed capital credit retirements in the amount of $269,521 for the years 1998 and 2005, which included account credits

to 3,563 active accounts and 3,676 checks mailed to inactive accounts.

When members receive bill credits or refund checks for capital credits, it might seem puzzling to see a rate increase in the same year. However, these refunds are distributed to members as a return on past investments and the debt used to fund the poles, wires, and infrastructure from the years the credits cover.

Current rates, on the other hand, are set to support the investments needed for the system today.

Working Together to Lower Demand

W

hen outdoor temperatures drop, electricity use naturally rises. Colder weather drives us indoors, where we rely more heavily on home heating systems, more lighting, and household appliances.

Heating systems run longer and more frequently to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. Combine that with the fact that most people use electricity at the same times —typically in the mornings and early evenings — and the result is significant pressure on our electric grid.

Southeast Colorado Power Association works closely with Tri-State Generation and Transmission, our local powers supply cooperative, to plan for these seasonal weather patterns and changes and to ensure you have reliable power every day of the year. This partnership involves detailed resource and infrastructure planning to make certain electricity is available whenever you need it. However, it is important to remember that our local system is part of a much larger regional and national electric grid.

During the winter months, when homes and businesses across the country are using more electricity simultaneously, overall demand can approach — or occasionally exceed — available supply. This is especially true during severe weather events, such as ice storms, sudden temperature drops, or equipment malfunctions that reduce generation capacity. In rare cases when demand threatens to outpace supply, the regional grid operator may call for temporary,

controlled outages — often referred to as rolling blackouts — to prevent broader system failures. If such a situation arises, SECPA will provide timely updates and information to members via our website at secpa.com, and our Facebook page.

We have also recently added Interactive Voice Response to our phones system.

Which means when you call into report an outage or pay a bill you can be greeted with a message explaining a large active outage and expected duration.

To prepare for these scenarios and minimize risks, SECPA takes proactive measures to strengthen reliability year-round. These include routine system maintenance, investments in grid modernization and comprehensive disaster response planning. Southeast Colorado Power Association has contracted tree trimmers clearing trees off our lines year-round. Our standard is a five-year cutback on all trees trimmed and it takes five years to get every mile of our power lines cleared. Southeast Colorado Power Association also has poles inspected every year and then changes out all rejected poles. These proactive steps are designed to ensure our portion of the grid remains resilient even under extreme conditions. Yet, maintaining a reliable electric system requires a collective effort — and every member plays an important role in lowering demand when the grid is under stress.

Understanding how winter weather impacts electricity demand is key to maintaining system reliability.

By practicing simple energy conservation habits at home, you save money on your monthly bill and you help strengthen the resilience of the grid that powers our community.

Together, through small actions and shared awareness, we can ensure that our homes remain warm, our lights stay on, and our local grid continues to serve us reliably throughout the season.

1. Lower your thermostat slightly. Even reducing the temperature by a few degrees can help.

2. Delay using large appliances during peak hours.

Run dishwashers, washing machines and dryers during off-peak hours — typically midday or late evening.

3. Adjust your water heater. Setting it to 120 degrees F and spacing out showers helps conserve both energy and hot water.

4. Unplug unnecessary devices. Power used for lighting and electronics adds up and accounts for a significant portion of home energy use. Disconnect unused items to reduce energy waste.

Apply for Scholarships

S

outheast Colorado Power Association (SECPA) is once again making scholarships available to area high school seniors. Students’ parents must be members of SECPA. SECPA is offering ten $1,000 scholarships and also administers through Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association an additional two $1,000 scholarships. Eligible applicants must be a high school senior graduating in 2026 who plans to attend a twoor four-year college, or trade or other non-traditional secondary educational institution.

In addition, Basin Electric will award a $2,500 scholarship to one student in the SECPA member territory.

Students interested in applying for the scholarships are asked to submit the completed application form available online at secpa.com/scholarships for the scholarship(s) they are applying for, along with the required support documents for each application submitted. Students may apply for one or all three scholarships.

Applications for the SECPA scholarships are due no later than FEBRUARY 9, 2026.

WOMEN IN FARM ECONOMICS CONVENTION MEETS IN LA JUNTA

Southeast Colorado Power Association was proud to sponsor the 49th Annual Women in Farm Economics – WIFE- Convention held in October at Otero College in La Junta. Women who, along with their families, make a living from farming and ranching attended the event, traveling from all over Colorado and from states including from New York, North Dakota, and Nebraska. SECPA members Kerry Froese and Julie Sumpter co-chaired the event.

Colorado WIFE President, Kerry Froese, welcomed everyone as they gathered Thursday afternoon at Colorado Seeds and Froese Farms in Cheraw. Froese, along with family and friends, prepared the evening meal for the group.

SECPA Sponsors Local Youth Entrepreneurship Fair

E

ntrepreneurship is gaining momentum in Southeast Colorado — especially among students in grades 5-12. Many of the students’ parents are SECPA members.

In early November 2025, more than 100 students from schools across the region gathered at the Otero College Student Center in La Junta for the 12th Annual Southeast Colorado Youth Entrepreneurship Fair, called the E-Fair.

Students presented both operating youth businesses and new business ideas they believed could thrive in their small, rural communities. Participants pitched their concepts to a panel of judges, and cash prizes were awarded to top projects in both the high school and middle school divisions.

Several honorable mention and special awards were also presented in both divisions. Notably, the Social Responsibility Award went to students from the Tiger Trades Academy — TTA — in La Junta. Their coffee shop pitch impressed judges not only for its business potential but also for its primary purpose: proceeds from the shop will help cover the cost of graduation caps and gowns for TTA seniors.

The E-Fair organizing team extends its appreciation to the investors whose support and resources continue to grow this event. Southeast Colorado Power Association (SECPA) was one of several of this year’s investors. Other investor include Colorado Bank & Trust Co.; First National Bank Colorado; Southeast Business Retention Expansion & Attraction; SECOM; The State Bank of La Junta; and Three Corners Connector.

hen outdoor temperatures drop, electricity use naturally rises. Colder weather drives us indoors, where we rely more heavily on home heating systems, more lighting, and household appliances.

Heating systems run longer and more frequently to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. Combine that with the fact that most people use electricity at the same times — typically in the mornings and early evenings — and the result is significant pressure on our electric grid.

Y-W Electric Association, Inc. works closely with Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, our local power supplier cooperative, to plan for these seasonal weather patterns and changes and to ensure you have reliable power every day of the year. This partnership involves detailed resource and infrastructure planning to make certain electricity is available whenever you need it. However, it is important to remember that our local system is part of a much larger regional and national electric grid.

During the winter months, when homes and businesses across the country are using more electricity simultaneously, overall demand can approach — or occasionally exceed — available supply. This is especially true during severe weather events, such as ice storms, sudden temperature drops, or equipment malfunctions that reduce generation capacity.

In rare cases when demand threatens to outpace supply, the regional grid operator may call for temporary, controlled outages — often referred to as rolling blackouts — to prevent broader system failures. If such a situation arises, Y-W Electric will provide timely updates and information to members through our social media channels, radio broadcasts, and phone calls.

To prepare for these scenarios and minimize risks, Y-W Electric and Tri-State take proactive measures to strengthen reliability year-round. This includes routine system maintenance, investments in grid modernization, and comprehensive disaster response planning. These proactive steps are designed to ensure our portion of the grid remains resilient even under extreme conditions. Yet, maintaining a reliable electric system requires a collective effort — and every member plays an important role in lowering demand when the grid is under stress. Michael Penn 25010xxxxx You can help by taking simple actions during periods of high electricity use, especially on the coldest days of winter: 1. Lower your thermostat slightly. Even reducing the temperature by a few degrees can help.

2. Adjust your water heater. Setting it to 120 degrees and spacing out showers helps conserve both energy and hot water.

3. Unplug unnecessary devices. Power used for lighting and electronics adds up and accounts for a significant portion of home energy use. Disconnect unused items to reduce energy waste.

Understanding how winter weather impacts electricity demand is key to maintaining system reliability.

By practicing simple energy conservation habits at home, you save money on your monthly bill, and you help strengthen the resilience of the grid that powers our community.

Through small actions and shared awareness, we can ensure that our homes remain warm, our lights stay on, and our local grid continues to serve us reliably throughout the season.

Y-W ELECTRIC OFFERS PROGRAMS THAT WORK FOR YOU

Did you know there are several ways to pay your Y-W Electric bill? You may send your payment in the mail, pay by phone, or use the bill pay feature in SmartHub. Or you can simplify how you pay your electric bill this year: opt in to our budget billing program or set up automatic payments for your account.

BUDGET BILLING

Budget billing helps with the fluctuation of electrical usage and resulting costs. This plan is available for Y-W Electric’s rural and town residential electric consumers. Budget billing allows you to spread the charges for services into equal monthly payments instead of paying higher bills during some parts of the year and lower bills at other times. Merle Fisher 11507xxxxx If you have received electric service from Y-W Electric at your present address for the last 12 months or more, you are eligible for the budget billing program. With a full year of history, we can estimate your monthly budget amount as accurately as possible.

Y-W Electric’s budget billing year runs from January to December. Each January, your statement will show the actual balance of the account. There will be a balance due if the estimated budget amount was less than the actual usage cost. Or, a credit balance may result from overestimating the year’s energy costs.

The January statement will also show the new budget amount for the next eleven months.

AUTOMATIC PAYMENTS

Y-W Electric also offers an automatic payment plan.

With this method, you agree to allow Y-W to draw funds from your personal or business checking account each month to pay the amount due on your account for your electricity used. With the auto pay option, you will still receive a billing statement mailed on the 14th of each month, however it will have the message “Paid by Bank Draft on xx/xx/xx.” The total amount due will then be deducted from your bank account on the draft date of the following month. A debit or credit card may also be used to set up automatic payments.

Opting in to the budget billing or automatic payment programs eliminates mailing costs, late payment penalties, and service disconnection.

Prepare For Winter Roads

W

inter months can bring snow, ice, and windy conditions, which create additional hazards for drivers. Should an accident occur, it is important to be prepared. Automobile crashes always present danger, but when electricity is involved, decisions made in the moments after the accident are especially crucial.

Here are tips to help drivers stay safe on the roads this winter.

Before the winter storm, prepare your vehicle by making sure: • Batteries are charged • Tires have sufficient tread • Jumper cables are in good condition • Windshield wipers work • Gas tank is at least half full • Emergency kit includes: ⚪ blanket ⚪ flares ⚪ ice scraper ⚪ portable shovel ⚪ abrasive material (sand or kitty litter) ⚪ first aid kit ⚪ phone charger ⚪ a flashlight with extra batteries ⚪ warm hat ⚪ nonperishable snacks ⚪ bottled water If you are stranded in your car after an accident, watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia and: • Do not stay in one position for too long.

• Stay awake.

• Do not overexert yourself to avoid strain on your heart.

• Watch for signs such as change in skin color, numbness, shivering, slurred speech, loss of coordination or confusion.

What if there is an accident with downed power lines?

If you see a car in an accident with a power pole, your first instinct may be to rush toward the vehicle to offer help. Call 911 immediately and do not get out of your vehicle. Always remember to keep your distance from the involved vehicle, debris, and all electrical equipment that has been damaged — it could all be energized. Instruct those in the car to stay inside until the power has been shut off.

If one must exit the vehicle because it is on fire, jump clear of it with your feet together and without touching the vehicle and ground at the same time.

Keeping your feet together, shuffle or bunny hop to safety. Doing this will ensure that you will not have different strengths of electric current running from one foot to another.

Always remember to keep your distance from a vehicle that has accidentally encountered a downed power line. Stay in your vehicle and call 911.

Keep in mind that a downed line does not need to be sparking to be energized. It is best to assume all low and downed lines are energized and dangerous.

Never drive over a downed line because that could pull down the pole and other equipment, causing additional hazards.

For utility crews, repairing damaged power lines is especially dangerous during storm conditions. The increased hazards mean that extra time and attention must be dedicated to ensuring that power is safely restored. Have patience while linemen work in these adverse conditions to turn the power back on and remember to exercise safety and be prepared for driving in dangerous winter conditions.
