FOOTBALL TEAM, COMMUNITY STEP UP

HAWKS FLY AT STATE TOURNEY Horizon takes down Castle View to advance to the Sweet 16 on PAGE 20.

Jennifer Eaves, of Thornton, speaks to family, friends and members of the North Metro Jaguars football club who gathered Feb. 28 at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop to raise money for the family of Monica Zapata, the 40-year-old single mother killed Feb. 14 in Arvada. Police say a drunken driver ran a stop light at Sheridan Boulevard and 80th Avenue and hit her car. “I hope we make enough money so that (her) kids don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from or if there’s a roof over their head,” Eaves said. She met Zapata, who has three children, through North Metro Jaguars, for which Zapata’s son plays. More than 250 friends and family came out to show their support at the Thornton restaurant. The only difficult part of filling those positions, according to longtime Hy-

land Hills spokeswoman Joann Cortez, is whittling down the candidates. “We never have a problem hiring,” she said. “We usually have more kids apply than jobs. Last year, we had 2,000 kids apply, so it’s about 2-to-1.” The district receives all manner of applicants, from international students looking for a fun Colorado experience to teachers seeking summer employment to second- and third-generation Water World workers — those kids who

After extensive research and community outreach showed support for a new identity, Adams County School District 50 will now be known as Westminster Public Schools. The board of education unanimously approved the name-change at its Feb. 23 meeting. It is part of a rebranding effort that will include a new logo, tagline and colors, as well as an upgraded website and the creation of a parent-friendly app to ensure accurate, timely information to promote parental involvement. “This is an important step for the school district because we really needed to create a new identity that not only better reflects where we are geographically, but makes a bold statement about the changes in the district over the last several years,” Superintendent Pam Swanson said in a news release. “We have a wonderful story to share and we are excited about the future.” The district’s community outreach included focus groups, surveys and public discussions. Because several other districts in the county identify by numbers — for example, Adams 1 (Mapleton), Adams 12 (Five
