And they call the thing rodeo

Contestants enjoy wintertime rodeo at Je co Fairgrounds

Lakewood’s Mikayla Wilson practically grew up at the Je erson County Fairgrounds, roping and riding in the county’s rodeo team with friend Joey Quintana.

So, because Je co hadn’t hosted a rodeo at the fairgrounds in more

than ve years, they decided to host one of their own.

After more than six months of planning, more than 200 contestants and hundreds of spectators turned out for the March 11 Winter Rodeo at the fairgrounds. e Mountain Valley Rodeo Company hosted contestants from all over Colorado and surrounding states.

While Colorado’s rodeo season typically starts in April, Wilson said, “We did this one as the winter rodeo to get people ready for the season and bring something back to Je co.”

Not only was the time of year unique, but the schedule was too,

Wilson and participants explained.

e March 11 event was a full rodeo but only lasted a day. Contestants competed in a slack in the morning, which featured all contestants, Wilson explained. en, 10-12 contestants were randomly selected to rope and ride again at 4 p.m., when the bulk of the spectators were expected.

For instance, 50 barrel racers signed up to compete in the morning’s slack, and then 12 ran later in the performance. is way, Wilson explained, the spectators get a taste

Avila’s trial in fatal hitand-run case set

for

August Court approves separate trials for Avila, codefendant Marquez

Ernesto Avila, 25, is scheduled for trial in last fall’s hit-and-run outside a Golden bar.

Avila pleaded not guilty to a felony accessory charge last month, and he’s scheduled for a nine-day trial from Aug. 22-Sept. 1.

He appeared in court on bond during his March 6 pretrial conference, where the judge granted his defense attorney’s request to sever his case from his codefendant, 30-year-old Ruben Marquez.

In general, severing cases means asking for separate trials. A judge decides whether severance is necessary to achieve a fair determination of guilt or innocence for each defendant.

Avila and Marquez were arrested Oct. 9 after Marquez reportedly drove Avila’s truck into a crowd of people outside e Rock Rest

of each event in a timely fashion.

Among those competing in the morning’s slack was Taylor ompson from Merino, Colorado. ompson heard about the rodeo from his team-roping partner, and he appreciated a wintertime rodeo. He said it gives rodeo competitors something to do, and he’d be willing to compete again if the organizers made it an annual thing.

Cadence Hale, a high school junior from Kersey, Colorado, has been riding in rodeos for eight years, and does about 50 a year. About half are through a high school circuit through an after-school club, and the other half are with her family.

She’s done several events over the years, but she was competing in barrel racing and breakaway roping at Je co, with the latter event being her favorite.

Considering her summers are packed with rodeos, she also appreciated the winter event as a nice change of pace. She said it’s a great way to gain experience before the season kicks o next month.

Aurora’s Kevin Martin, whose son competed at Je co, also described it as a great learning experience. He noted how the competitors ranged from high school students to seasoned riders, saying the event was open to everyone, which not all rodeos are.

Lodge. Adrian Ponce, 26, was killed in the incident, and at least four others were injured, including Rock Rest employees.

Investigators believe Avila, the truck’s owner, was a passenger during the incident outside e Rock Rest. He’s been charged with one felony count of accessory to a crime.

Meanwhile, the District Attorney’s O ce led 17 charges against Marquez, including rst-degree murder, vehicular homicide and multiple assault charges. Marquez is being held at the Je erson County jail without bond, and his preliminary hearing is set to conclude March 14.

Because Marquez’s preliminary hearing was ongoing, he hasn’t entered a plea in the case yet or been scheduled for trial, Judge Lindsay

VanGilder emphasized during Avila’s pretrial conference.

However, based on Marquez’s preliminary hearing, his defense attorneys are promoting the theory that Avila was the one driving the truck when it hit the crowd.

VanGilder stated: “At a joint trial, Mr. Marquez would be pointing the nger at Mr. Avila, and he’s only charged with the accessory, and he’d legally only be defending the accessory crime. But, to a jury, he’d be left to defend an impression that … he was the driver.”

She recognized that having separate trials, if Marquez’s case proceeded to trial, would have duplicative evidence and create “di culties for the victims and the survivors of the deceased victim.” In general, she agreed with the prosecution that trying the cases together would be the most economical route.

However, she continued, “My fear is that to deny this request (to sever

Avila’s case from Marquez’s) would create an appellate record … and require retrials for both defendants, thus leading to three trials total.”

us, she granted the defense’s request for a separate trial, and scheduled Avila for two hearings ahead of his jury trial. e rst is a pretrial conference at 10:30 a.m. May 1, and the second is a motions hearing at 8:30 a.m. May 12.

The Oct. 9 incident e arrest a davits for Marquez and Avila describe how the two and another man rode together in Avila’s truck to e Rock Rest Lodge on Oct. 8. ey had several mixed drinks throughout the night, and reportedly talked to another group “about gang issues.” Accounts vary on whether the discussion was light banter or more contentious.

Around 1:30 a.m. Oct. 9, a verbal confrontation between Marquez’s group and the other group outside

reportedly escalated into a ght. Some witnesses described a man matching Marquez’s description as getting into Avila’s white truck and driving it into the crowd, with one witness telling investigators, “ e way he swerved into people was on purpose.”

Several Rock Rest patrons and employees were injured, and 26-yearold Adrian Ponce was killed. Of those who were injured, four were transported to the hospital, including two bar employees. All were expected to make full recoveries.

Here Are Some Ways to Make a Home More Accommodating for Seniors

Even if you live in a home with stairs, there are ways to make your home more senior-friendly, so you can age in place instead of moving.

Stairs are the single biggest reason that most seniors want to downsize into a ranch or patio home, but almost any staircase can accommodate a stair elevator — a chair which can transport you from one floor to the next, even around curves. We had a stair elevator on the stairs to our basement in the ranch home we sold last year. We used it mostly for transporting heavy items to and from the basement, including those big purchases from Costco which didn’t fit in our kitchen cabinets or pantry.

The seat on a stair elevator folds up so you can walk past it easily.

Some homes are built with 4-foot square closets one above the other which could be sacrificed later on to install an elevator. If you’re having a custom home built, consider that idea. Even if you never make that conversion, it’s a feature that could improve the resale value.

A handyman can often design and build ramps onto your front porch, into your back yard or between your garage and mudroom.

Rita and I are big fans of “chair height” toilets, which cost no more than regular height toilets and can be swapped out by a handyman, making it a pretty affordable enhancement. A handyman can also install grab bars in multiple places around your home, especially in bathrooms.

‘Cord Cutting’ Becomes Common; Here’s Our Story

Over the years, Rita and I have bounced around from cable TV to DirecTV to Dish Network because of the astounding increases in monthly fees. Add some premium channels and the cost can approach $200/month, which is $2,400 per year, just for TV! Perhaps your story is similar.

A year ago, when Rita and I moved into a 55+ rental that only offers Comcast TV and doesn’t allow satellite dishes, we finally did what so many have done before us: we abandoned both cable and satellite TV, or “cut the cord,” as it’s called.

So now we only stream, and our primary TV provider now is YouTubeTV, not to be confused with YouTube. And I recommend it as an affordable solution.

We have Comcast/Xfinity for our home internet, which is a business expense for

me, and their basic internet speed is fast enough for streaming YouTubeTV (which is $64.99/mo.) and Netflix.

I love two things about YouTubeTV.

First, it has unlimited cloud DVD storage. (No equipment for us; just connect to our WiFi signal.) Second, like Netflix, I can watch it on my laptop, phone or iPad, such as at the office or when I’m traveling anywhere in the U.S. (I watched some Denver programs while I was in Hawaii recently.) We don’t watch any programs live anymore, because we want to fast forward through commercials. We preferred Dish and DirecTV over Comcast because they have a 30-second fast forward button. Comcast has no such button. YouTube has a 15-second button, which is good enough. BTW, I get nothing for this free plug.

Meet Our New Broker Associate: Austin Pottorff

I have known Austin for over a decade. He’s one of the hardest working Realtors I know, and he has been very successful, especially in finding and listing development sites which he recognizes as having great potential. Previously self-employed under the name Mountain Opportunities Real Estate, he has now joined Golden Real Estate, bringing with him a new development listing which you’ll be reading about in a coming column. He is also a licensed drone pilot, and you’ll be impressed as I was by the aerial photos and videos which you can view on his website, www.MountainDrone.com

Austin’s politics also align with my own, and I am really impressed by his commitment to the banning of assault rifles, as evidenced by his website, www.KidsLivesMatter.org. I look forward to a great relationship with Austin. You can reach him anytime on his cell phone, 970-281-9071, or by email at Austin@GoldenRealEstate.com. Welcome to the Golden Real Estate team, Austin!

Other easy and affordable improvements could include installing lever door handles to replace door knobs. Another might be to install a video door bell so you can see who’s at your door from your chair (or from a distance when on vacation — a stranger ringing your bell wouldn’t know you’re not inside.)

There are also internet-connected electric deadbolts which you can lock or unlock from a smartphone. Speaking of security, you can also install internetconnected cameras which not only give you a live view of your interior or exterior spaces but also store that video in the “cloud” for later viewing.

You might also appreciate having various lights in your garage or bathrooms turn on when you enter — that’s another easy handyman installation of a motion-detecting light switch available at any hardware store.

One reader suggests a countertop microwave oven as being more convenient for a wheelchair-bound senior.

For bathing, you can buy a walk-in bathtub, but that’s a pretty expensive improvement that won’t necessarily improve your resale value. It could even hurt it. Most seniors prefer a shower, and one that you can roll into is best. At

least build one with a bench and shower hose attachment.

A home with zero outside maintenance is ideal for seniors, but “patio homes” are few and far between and in high demand when they go on the market. I’ve had clients lose bidding wars for a patio home.

The primary feature of a patio home is that the HOA takes care of all outside maintenance, mowing unfenced yards front and back, removing snow up to your garage door and porch/front door, trimming trees and bushes, etc. Many patio home HOAs even take responsibility for repainting your home’s exterior on a schedule (typically 6 years) and have a master insurance policy covering the structure and your roof. You just purchase renter’s insurance.

But you can hire vendors to mow your lawn and shovel the snow. We had a wonderful Vietnamese family which not only mowed our lawn as needed but did a spring and fall yard cleanup for a reasonable fee. Of course, now that we live in an apartment, we have none of those concerns, and I’m a big advocate of doing what we did — cash out by selling your home if it will produce enough cash to live out your remaining years.

(There’s a trailhead to the park’s 5 miles of hiking trails within the subdivision.) The seller has made many improvements to the home since buying it in 2002, including a total renovation of the gourmet kitchen and master bathroom, plus adding 11 5 kW of solar panels which meet all the electrical needs of the home. The main-floor deck was also completely rebuilt with composite decking, metal railings and a breakfast bar for enjoying the sunrises over South Table Mountain and the City of Golden, which are visible even from the walk-out basement. A walking path near this home allows children to walk safely to Mitchell Elementary School via a pedestrian bridge that crosses the highway. Martin has competed in rodeos too, and is now a trainer or coach. He had some students competing in March 11’s breakaway roping and barrel racing, and mentioned that the organizers are former students of his.

“It’s good for the community and the contestants to have somewhere to compete,” he said, adding that he shares Wilson and Quintana’s desire

to see more rodeo events at Je co. Wilson and Quintana hope to make this winter rodeo an annual event, and are considering hosting a smaller event in the summer as well.

In the days before the March 11 event, Wilson said there’s already been a learning curve and imagined there’d be some hiccups the day of. But, she believed her organization has enough interest from contestants and spectators to keep its momentum going.

“We really want to bring rodeos back to Je co and the Golden area,” she continued.

Golden Transcript 11 March 16, 2023

We’ve all heard the expression “It takes a village.” Usually, it’s applied to something about raising a child, but over time it’s been applied to everything under the sun.

More ways to get your green on AVENUE FLASHES

In this case, it looks like it takes a village to present the rst annual Gateway Village St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl. Now, that being said, I’m sure a lot of you are thinking “where on earth is Gateway Village?” It’s kind of new, and you’ve probably driven by it more than once and didn’t know it actually had a name.

Gateway Village is located o of West Colfax Avenue after it curves around and heads south towards Morrison. Just before it crosses under I-70. It sits up on the ridge next to Avalanche Harley Davidson, which is the most visible landmark, and is a little business complex that is kind of hidden back there. It houses several restaurants, a coffee café as well as a liquor store that have gotten together to put on a Saint Patrick’s Day pub crawl all within the same basic location.

So, here’s what’s going on over there. It’s happening on Friday, March 17. e event starts at 5 p.m.

with group costumes, and one free cocktail at the Morris and MaeFood Hall, followed bya full hour of “happy hour power hour” drink and food specials.

From there, it will move over to the Launch Espresso Food Spirits Café for a Whiskey Cold Brew (available in decaf if preferred). Next, they’ll be crawling down the street to the Nomad Taqueria and Beer Garden for a St. Paddy’s Specialty Cocktail. at’s followed by a quick intermission for a shot from Boulder Spirits then it’s back to Morris and Mae for an Irish Dance troop performance! After everyone’s had their ll of traditional Irish folk dance, the party headsacross the street to Over Yonder Brewery for live music from Vada and a free pint.  Drink and food specials available at all four locations as well.  en, being a Friday night, you can feel free to dance the night away at Over Yonder or just complete the crawl at Morris and Mae for late night happy

hour until midnight.

It sounds like a really fun time and a great chance for everyone to check out some of these new food venues. But, that being said, it is a pub crawl, which means that it’s going to involve more than one alcoholic beverage. So, if you are planning on going to this, I’d recommend that you get together a little group and have one designated driver. Either that or have your favorite ride share service on speed dial. Remember that it’s going to be a pretty busy night for those folks too, so bring along a little extra patience. And, if all else fails, there’s actually a new hotel at Gateway Village so there’s no excuse for drinking and driving from there. Just be safe, ok?

Morris & Mae is located at 18475

W. Colfax Ave. #132 and includes six eateries, a bar and an artisan market.

Dining options include e Alpine House, Goldmine Sweets + Espresso, Kiki’s Fresh Bowls, La Rosita, Mac Nation Café and fresh Italian-food purveyor Paisan. e Drinkery features 20 taps, wine, cocktails and mocktails, and the marketplace includes Middlemist orist, as well as products from local companies like Postcard Foods, Pickles & Potions, Il

Porcellino and Little Man Ice Cream. Launch is a café and co ee bar that prides itself on grinding, brewing and serving some of the world’s best co ee right here in Golden. ey also o er a full food menu and crafting co ee inspired cocktails. It’s located at 18455 W. Colfax Ave. #101.

Over Yonder Brewing Company offers an impressive menu of craft beers that has something for everyone, including no alcoholic selections. eir address is 18455 W Colfax Avenue, # 103.

And the Nomad Taqueria and Beer Garden brings fresh Southwestern-inspired food and drinks to the Golden community. With expansive indoor and outdoor space, there is plenty of room for drinking and dining. It’s located in the Origin Hotel, Red Rocks at 18485 West Colfax Ave. So, that’s another suggestion of where to get your green on this weekend. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Chronicle of an abandoned oil and gas well — one of millions

Even from a distance it’s clear that an oil and gas well called “State Senate #2” in New Mexico has seen better days. e pumpjack sits idle, tumbleweeds surround the once-moving parts and the earth smells of crude saturating the soil.

According to state records, this well last produced oil in 2007, and even then it was at a rate of about 25 to 50 barrels per year. ough the state inexplicably lists the well’s status as “active,” it’s not. And the listed owner is a company that no longer exists in any solvent form.

In other words, State Senate #2 meets the criteria for an “orphaned” oil and gas well. It’s just one of more than a million such wells nationwide, which are a growing environmental threat resulting from decades of policy failure by state and federal regulators.

“Orphaned” is an inaccurate term.

e parent companies that originally drilled and pro ted from these wells mostly didn’t die—they ed. Once the wells stopped making money, they were sold to smaller, less solvent companies that then vanished

into a haze of bankruptcy. e unplugged wells were left to ooze methane and other nasty stu with no one around to clean it up.

It’s abandonment, plain and simple.

e State Senate #2, for example, was originally drilled by Standard Oil Co. of Texas — yes, that Standard Oil — back in 1960, but the hole was dry, so workers plugged it and moved on. Two decades later, Raymond E. Sitta, Jr., took over the lease and applied for a permit to reopen the well. When oil came bubbling out, he named it State Senate #2.

After Sitta died in 2008, his estate sold the well to BIYA Operators, a local mom and pop company, which sold it in 2014 to Colorado-based Diversi ed Resources.

ree years later, Diversi ed led for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and abandoned its interest in all the mineral leases in the Horseshoe Gallup eld.

LINDA SHAPLEY Publisher lshapley@coloradocommunitymedia.com

at’s how State Senate #2, along with some four-dozen other wells and a leaky pipeline network, became wards of the state.

It’s a common story. e Horseshoe Gallup eld is rife with such stories. Another group of wells down the road changed hands several times before being acquired by Chuza Oil, owned by the Dallas producer of a reality television show called Cheaters. Now Chuza is bankrupt, and its wells and assorted other detritus are a methane-oozing mess.  e pattern repeats across New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. Wyoming has at least 1,500 “orphaned” wells.

In theory, the companies took care of the cleanup tab as a condition of their drilling permit. In reality, the required bond amounts don’t get close to covering the costs. e Bureau of Land Management, for example, requires an operator to put up just $10,000 per individual well. Bigger operators can take out a single, $150,000 blanket bond that covers all of their wells — whether it’s ve or 500 — on public lands

nationwide.

Yet the average cost to plug and reclaim a single oil and gas well, according to a 2021study, is a whopping $76,000, with costs for deeper wells shooting up into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. at would add up to a $3.8 million cleanup bill for Chuza Oil’s 50 wells in the Horseshoe Gallup eld.

Court records show the company’s reclamation bonds with the Navajo Nation and federal government add up to less than $130,000, or about $2,500 per well. at means federal taxpayers — you and me — are on the hook for the remaining $3.7 million and change. And that’s just for one company’s wells in one location.

Equally maddening is that the regulators must have seen the warning signs but didn’t — or couldn’t — act to make the responsible parties take responsibility while they were still somewhat solvent.

e 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act authorized $4.7 billion in federal funds for cleaning up abandoned oil and gas wells. On

Arvada Center takes audiences back to ‘Our Town’

There are some 20th century plays that are simply synonymous with the theater. And right at the top of that list is ornton Wilder’s immortal story of small-town life and love, “Our Town.”

When a show has such a strong reputation, it can be easy to think of it as rigid and traditional, with no production having anything worthwhile to add. But as any regular of the Arvada Center can attest, the company never does a production without giving it a unique spin.

“Our production, to me, feels like the product of pure artistic collaboration,” wrote Archer Rosenkrantz, who plays Joe Crowell and Wally Webb at the Center, in an email interview. “I feel lucky to work under leadership that values everyone’s voices in the room, and I think that our production is a re ection of that.”

As part of the 2023 Black Box Repertory eater season, “Our Town” runs at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., through Saturday, May 20. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. ursday through Saturday, 1 p.m. on Wednesday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

e play, directed by Geo rey Kent, is set in the ctional town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire from 1901 to 1913, and follows the lives of some of the residents as they grapple with major life events and attempt to get a handle on the eeting nature of existence.

“Geo ’s vision for the show was that it isn’t just a show you see, you as the audience feel like a part of the story, and a part of the process, almost like being let in on a secret,” wrote Claylish Coldiron, who plays Emily Webb, in an email interview.

“We perform in the round in a very

intimate theatre, which we have utilized every corner of, so that when the show starts, the audience is being invited to join the world we create for the next two hours.”

One of the decisions that adds a more personal touch to the experience is to allow Rosenkrantz to portray Wally as autistic.

“As an autistic actor, I’m ecstatic that my director was on board with allowing Wally to be autistic as well for this production. Wally has special interests like most autistic kids, and he thrives when he’s able to engage with them,” they wrote.

“Even though Emily and Wally don’t always see eye to eye, Wally loves Emily deeply. He looks up to her, and sometimes envies her ability to succeed in school where he often struggles.”

One of the many things that makes

“Our Town” so timeless is how applicable it is to every person, whether on stage or in the audience.

“ is script… brought to light how beautiful and spectacular life really is, and how precious, not in a way that is fragile but in a way that made us all want to hold it a little tighter and do a little more with whatever time and space we have,” Coldiron wrote.

Wheat Ridge Theatre invokes ‘The Irish Curse’

Sometimes the best way to tackle touchy subjects is to do so with a funny and irreverent approach. at’s the method author Martin Casella uses in his black comedy, “ e Irish Curse,” which is currently running at Wheat Ridge eatre Company, 5455 W. 38th. Ave., Unit J. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, through Sunday, March 26.

Af ter more than 20 years of collecting pinball machines, Dan Nikolich’s basement had run out of space to store them all. So Nikolich opened the Colorado Pinball Pub in Littleton to share his collection.

“Pinball is a unique thing because it doesn’t matter what your background or walk of life is, pinball will draw you in,” he said. “It’s a great equalizer because it only takes one ball.”

While the concept of offering drinks and games at one location is nothing new, the Denver area is host to a number of unique takes on the Dave and Buster’s business model.

Colorado Pinball Pub is one of the newer additions to the barcade scene, having opened in 2020. The pub offers 22 pinball machines, plus a few classic arcade games like PacMan and Centipede, for unlimited play for $15 per hour.

Nikolich’s love for games started young, when he was growing up in Las Vegas and working for the MGM Arcade, so he was happy to see the recent rise in pinball’s popularity.

“Pinball is having a great resurgence right now. The last few years it’s been really hot,” he said. “We have parents who will bring their kids who have never played pinball and, at night, we get a lot of adults and date nights, stuff like that. All people seem to like pinball.”

Like the pub’s patrons, the pinball machines available range in age and theme, with Nikolich’s oldest machine being from 1981. The walls of the pub also pay homage to the history of the game, including its prohibition from 1940s to the 1970s, with pictures and news clippings.

In addition to pinball, the pub features over 150 kinds of whiskey, craft cocktails and Colorado brewed beer.

Nikolich said the goal is to have something for everyone and to make it approachable, whether that’s pinball or whiskey.

“We want you to come and learn about it and not be intimidated to ask if you don’t know something, we want to teach you, so that you can enjoy something new,” he said.

On the opposite side of the metro area, another

one-of-a-kind barcade is Akihabara, which, while located in Westminster, transports visitors to the Tokyo gaming district that gives the business its name.

Owner Brandon Osha said he was blown away when he had the chance to visit Akihabara and take in its blocks of multi-story arcades.

“The first time I went to Akihabara I knew I wanted to bring that here because it’s amazing,” Osha said.

He did just that by opening Akihabara in 2016.

Similar to Nikolich, Osha grew up with a love of gaming and worked at a local arcade and GameStop. Instead of pinball though, Osha’s games of choice came in arcade cabinets, which he began collecting at age 16.

Currently, Akihabara offers 52 arcade cabinets with around 65 games, but Osha has plans to expand his location with 25 new games and additional space, which he said will be complete this summer.

Osha said the game selection, which includes fighting games, rhythm games and nostalgic classics, definitely sets Akihabara apart.

“You never see this many (arcade cabinets) in one place,” he said. “We have such a different variety of games that you won’t find anywhere else in Colorado.”

One of the stranger and more rare games Akihabara offers is a Japanese table flipping game called Cho Chabudai, but more well-known games include Third Strike, Monkeyball, Typing of the Dead and Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. All of the games are $1 or less to play.

Osha said a lot of people come in seeking a specific game that’s hard to find anywhere else, but he encourages visitors to try whatever piques their interest, even if they can’t necessarily read the Japanese instructions.

“I think it’s a lot of games that people have never seen, but they might find something that they like,” he said. “Plus, it’s usually only three buttons and a joystick, so they’re not too hard to learn.”

Akihabara’s focus on Japanese culture carries over into the bar offerings, which include Japanese beers and cocktails made with Japanese liquor, as well as a variety of packaged snacks and ramen options.

Overall, Osha said he tries to provide a space that’s both niche and for everyone, describing the Akihabara crowd as a welcoming hodgepodge.

“If you’re looking to find a friend, you’ll find one around here somewhere,” he said.

Goldenite Corner: High school senior receives scholarship for caddying

After hundreds of hours on the golf course and in the classroom, Keileigh Gorman’s hard work has paid o .

e Golden resident and Lakewood High School senior was awarded the Western Golf Association’s Chick Evans Scholarship for golf caddies, paying for her tuition and housing at the University of Colorado-Boulder for four years.

She was one of 14 Colorado recipients, and one of 325 across the country.

Gorman caddies at e Club at Rolling Hills, located at 15707 W. 26th Ave., and said the scholarship was a major honor. She hoped more high school students would take up caddying and apply for the scholarship too.

“For all the hardships my family and I faced through my parents’ divorce and my dad’s death, the Chick Evans Scholarship has given me the opportunity to go to college without the nancial burden,” Gorman said. “ ... Receiving this scholarship was my special ‘I made it’ moment, and I could not be more grateful for it.”

Bill Fowler, Rolling Hills’ club director, noted how each recipient must have an excellent academic record, nancial need and outstand-

ing character. ey must also have a strong caddie record, with Fowler saying that 75 loops or rounds is considered the minimum. A loop or round is 18 holes.

Gorman started caddying in summer 2020, after her brother received the same scholarship for caddying at Fowler said the club’s had six or seven Evans Scholars, with Gorman and her brother being the two most

So far, Gorman has caddied 90 loops or rounds, and wants to reach her goal of 160 this summer before she heads to CU.

Caddying has been a great summertime job, she described, saying she gets to be outdoors and mostly sets her own schedule. e biggest bene t, though, has been meeting the golfers. Gorman said she’s learned a lot from them over the years, about golf, business and life in

“It’s great to caddy,” she said.

“You’re constantly learning.”

Fowler explained that, in addition to teaching them about golf and how to be better caddies, he hoped golfers also piqued the caddies’ interest about business and what they might want to do after high school.

Community Engagement Group holding GPD accountable, rebuilding public trust

CEG celebrates one-year anniversary this month

For the last year, a dozen Goldenites have been sitting on Golden Police Department’s Incident Review Board meetings, helping GPD review or draft policies, and helping the department develop its new mission, vision and values.

Their next task, as they discussed at their March 9 meeting, is to help the department review whether it’s keeping up with national best practices.

The Golden Police Department started laying the groundwork for its Community Engagement Group in 2021, selected the members in late 2021, and then had its first meeting in March 2022.

Chief Joe Harvey said the department started CEG to help rebuild public trust and “engender good faith with the people we have … and the systems we have.” Because the CEG members are Golden residents, they bring valuable outside perspectives as the department drafts policies or reviews best practices, he explained.

While other departments across the country have something simi-

lar, CEG member Stuart Sipkin believed some only use it as a public relations tactic. But that’s not the

case in Golden. As Sipkin looked around the room at his fellow members, he

said, “I don’t think anyone would disagree with that fact that the (GPD)

us. … I would love to see (a CEG) in every law enforcement agency in the country.”

Eric Trout, a former prosecutor in western Colorado, said he never

saw this kind of community engagement where he used to work, adding, “It’s nice to see out here.”

Right now, CEG has 11 members, and Harvey said he’s looking to add one or two more. Considering about 9% of the city’s population is Hispanic, Harvey said he wanted to see more Hispanic representation on CEG.

Overall, he wanted the membership to be as diverse as Golden itself — not only racial diversity, but socioeconomic status, age, career backgrounds and other characteristics. The group includes a few retirees, four members of the Golden Anti-Racism Collective, a Golden High School student, a local real estate agent, a minister, and a teacher.

“We wanted to create as diverse a group as possible, and have as many characteristics about our community as we possibly can,” Harvey continued.

Having a voice, ensuring transparency

Once CEG was assembled, the members were able to “look behind the curtain and get involved,” as Harvey described. They broke out into smaller subgroups to help the department with various tasks and do a few overarching projects together.

Some CEG members sit on the Incident Review Board, where officers review high-level uses of

force, such as strikes, takedowns, stun-guns and others. The IRB reviews whether the incident was within policy or outside of policy, and makes disciplinary recommendations.

While the CEG members don’t have a vote, per se, during these incident reviews, they do have a voice. They’re able to ask questions and make statements about the incidents, they described, adding how they see “the good, the bad, and the ugly” at these meetings.

Other CEG members helped GPD develop its new mission, vision and values. The Rev. Susan Otey from First United Methodist Church of Golden said she loved hearing the sworn and unsworn staff members talk about “what they loved in the GPD. ”

Another subgroup is the policy committee, where CEG members “have a direct line” to helping GPD review current policies and draft new ones, they described.

Overall, the 11 Goldenites said they’ve learned a lot about the police department and the officers’ day-to-day activities. One experience was learning about de-escalation and use of force via training scenarios and simulations.

Bryan Kelly described how that was the biggest learning experience for him, seeing how poorly he and his fellow members did. He, Otey and others said it gave them an appreciation for the amount and breadth of training GPD officers have.

Kelly said he thought he’d be

able to make a split-second decision during the use-of-force exercise, but “from my perspective, there was no split-second at all.” He ultimately got himself and another person killed during the exercise. Meanwhile, he said, the officers “seemed comfortable in their training — they were just dialed in.”

While they’ve done a lot in their first year, the CEG members said they have more work to do. During the March 9 meeting, Harvey asked them to review “The President’s Task Force on 21st-Century

Policing,” and see how GPD could improve from when it first implemented these best practices six years ago.

Overall, CEG members believed GPD was moving in the right direction and “separating themselves from other forces,” as Ty Scrable stated.

Kelly added: “I’m impressed at how high the expectations are here. The officers and staff here are set up for success, and everybody at GPD are in positions where they should have no problem meeting those high expectations.”

major at CU, but she’s considering studying business or law, partly based on what she’s learned from golfers.

For any young people interested in the Evans Scholarship, both Gorman and Fowler stressed it’s not a guaranteed hole-in-one.

Fowler said the caddying work required to even qualify for the Evans Scholarship can’t be done in a single summer. So, students need to start caddying early, on top of the academic work and other quali cations.

Even after she applied, Gorman described a very thorough interview process in January before she received the scholarship.

And even once she starts at CU, Gorman won’t be resting on her laurels.

Gorman and other Evans Scholars will live in a chapter house, where they’re required to keep up their academics, complete housework and volunteer. Plus, Evans Scholars are expected, but not required, to

continue caddying for at least one summer after they start at college.

But, Gorman’s excited to start her college career without having to worry about paying for her tuition or where she’ll be living each year. She’ll have a family of fellow caddies and Evans Scholars to bond with and to hold her accountable, she explained.

Fowler added that college students in general do better when they feel they’re part of a community, and the graduation rate for Evans Scholars is incredibly high because of that camaraderie.

For anyone looking to caddy or learn more about the Evans Scholarship, Fowler said Rolling Hills and Lakewood Country Club are local clubs that participate in the scholarship program. More information is available at wgaesf.org.

“It’s a very selective process and a very high honor,” Fowler said, adding that he was proud of Gorman for all her hard work.

While she still has two more months at Lakewood High School and a summer of caddying ahead of her, Gorman said of being an Evans Scholar, “I’m excited to see where this goes.”

Heist or hijinx? 1800s statue goes missing from Georgetown museum

e tracks along the snow-covered roof told o cers the crime couldn’t have happened much more than 48 hours prior to inspection, but who could have carried the 40-pound statue o without being noticed?

A statue was stolen from the Hotel de Paris museum in Georgetown sometime on or before March 4, according to Kevin Kuharic, executive director of the museum.

After exiting the restroom on March 4, Kuharic noticed the Putti with Pan statue was missing. His rst thought was the wind blew it o the roof. After inspecting the premise, he realized it was something more sinister.

“I quickly realized it was nowhere to be found, so I contacted the Georgetown police,” he said.

Georgetown police arrived at the scene and carried out an investigation for the missing art. ey analyzed footprints, and o cers found that suspect/s accessed the roof on the south side of the annex, which allowed access to the statue located on the roof of the west courtyard wall.

Georgetown Police Sergeant John Gaskins responded to the incident. Based on the footprints he examined, Gaskins believed the impressions revealed a timeline for the theft.

“I do believe it could’ve been within two or three days of the report,” he said.

e statue resembles a bird bath, is about 36-40 inches tall and weighs 40 pounds. It was made in 1890 and

is a part of a pair of culturally signicant statues at the museum, according to Kuharic.

is isn’t the rst time someone attempted to abscond with a piece from the museum. In 1954, the year the Hotel de Paris became a museum, some kids tried to steal a lion statue. Ultimately, the kids damaged the statue but never got it o the property, according to Kuharic.

Kuharic isn’t convinced this theft is the same kind of pubescent prank. He believes someone strategically removed it, heist-style.

“It appears someone scoped out the item,” he said.

But what could someone want with a glori ed 1800s bird bath? Well, Kuharic said it could fetch you a bit of money on the lawn ornament black market.

“An item like this would be highly desirable as a garden ornament,” he explained.

Truthfully, the museum just wants the statue back. e museum is a Site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and a statue like this is priceless to the museum’s history.

“We would like to have it returned,” Kuharic said. “ ere is no way to replace it.”

Hotel de Paris was a hotel originally opened by French immigrant Louis Dupuy in 1875. A man with a criminal history himself, the museum won’t forget its ties to Dupuy, who struggled before he found success.

“ e story of Louis Dupuy is that of second chances,” Gaskins explained. “( e museum) agreed that if someone would return the statue, there would be no questions asked.”

The maximum period of time which such levy shall be collected is forty (40) years after the initial imposition of such levy.

All protests and objections must be submitted in writing to the City Council at or prior to the Public Hearing or any continuance or postponement thereof in order to be considered. All protests and objections to the First Amendment not presented in this manner shall be deemed to be waived.

No estimate yet for resuming train service to Golden station

What caused the RTD train derailment in Golden March 11 is still under investigation, o cials said March 13.

For now, shuttles are running in both directions between Red Rocks Community College and Golden to replace W Line train service. Shuttles will run about every 30 minutes during operating hours, RTD spokesperson Tina Jaquez stated.

Around 9:30 a.m. March 11, a W Line train derailed outside the Je co Government Center. Four passengers were aboard along with the operator, and two passengers reported minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.

For now, W Line trains are operating as scheduled between Red Rocks College and Denver Union stations. Jaquez said there’s no timeframe on train service to Golden will resume, saying it’ll be after the investigation concludes and repairs are nished.

Jaquez said RTD crews were able to re-rail the train over the weekend and move it back to an RTD facility. e agency’s fully assessing the train’s damage to have a better idea of all needed repairs. Additionally, as of March 13, repairs to overhead powerlines outside the Golden station were ongoing.

Jaquez recommended RTD passengers who use the W Line to/from Golden sign up for service alerts at rtd-denver.com. ese alerts will notify them of any changes in service, including when regular train service resumes.
