Reality is simple: Local businesses are at a disadvantage when competing with the price and convenience of Amazon and online shopping offered through the big-box stores such as Walmart and Target.
However, Parker Chamber Director T.J. Sullivan suggests that this year’s shoppers consider putting a portion of their holiday budget directly back into the community by spending at local businesses. Sullivan is challenging residents to spend 50% of their overall holiday budget at local stores and businesses.
“It’s tough to promote shopping local when it’s not as convenient,” Sullivan said. “It’s hard for our local businesses to compete on inventory, price and convenience. It comes down to a citizenship decision.”
Sullivan said citizens must think about where those sales tax dollars go when they shop locally. They go toward improving the town’s infrastructure and amenities.
In looking at recent data, Sullivan’s challenge can be achieved. According to an American Express trends report, more than 77% of consumers surveyed said shopping local at some level will be a priority in 2022.
Nola Krajewski, executive director of the Golden Chamber of Commerce, said for many businesses along the Front Range, the holiday season is their biggest time of year, and it does not end with just retail shops.
Krajewski said supporting local businesses also means going to local plays and cultural activities; it means picking a local insurance provider; it means grabbing happy hour at a locally owned business; and it means putting in the extra effort to be thoughtful, to be patient, and to be kind with everyone you meet working there.
“It has been a tough few years for our business community and they are all understaffed and overworked,” Krajewski said. “Kindness goes a long way when it comes to supporting our local business community. It doesn’t cost anything to support a local

Consumers encouraged to keep some holiday spending local DESPITE INFLATION AND RECESSION FEARS, RETAILERS REMAIN OPTIMISTIC IN 2022

business with a kind word, a positive review, or a little extra patience during the most critical time of year for them.”
While businesses are struggling to keep up with inventory challenges, staffing shortages and stiff competition, the average shopper leaves room for optimism. According to the recently released 2022 Deloitte Holiday Shopping Survey, overall spending in 2022 is expected to mimic 2021 numbers, at $1,455 per consumer. This reflects optimism among low-income spenders.
According to the survey, the lowincome group reported feeling more hopeful this season, with plans to return to pre-pandemic spending levels, which could be as much as 25% higher than 2021.
Before candy even hit shelves ahead of Halloween, a September report from the National Retail Federation said retailers both large and small started preparing for the optimistic holiday shopping projections.
Nadine Wilson, of Truly BoHotique, said she started placing orders and preparing for the holiday season in late summer and early fall.
“We take into account bestselling items from the year prior, in addition to seasonal trends when placing orders,” she said. “We’re not having massive supply-chain issues, but certainly do encounter some.”
Wilson said over the past year about 15% of all orders got canceled due to manufacturers not being able to fulfill orders, which requires her to order up to 15% more in merchandise.
“We’re not having massive supplychain issues, but certainly do encounter some,” Wilson said. “In terms of inflation, we are absolutely encountering increases in our wholesale pricing for goods, along with increases in pricing for supply items (bags, tissue paper, etc). Our cost of goods along with the cost of running the business have increased, but we’re doing our best to minimize pricing increases for our customers so as not to impede people from shopping.”
Large retailers started offering early deals, making Black Friday less of an event.
“Retailers are responding to consumer demand by starting deals and promotions for winter holiday merchandise earlier in the year,” the NRF report said. “That also allows consumers to spread out their budget over a longer period of time and search for the best deal for their holiday purchases.”
At one time, the busiest holiday shopping days came over a five-day period, starting with Black Friday, or the day after Thanksgiving, and continuing through the weekend to what has become known as Cyber Monday.
The Saturday after Thanksgiving, known as Small Business Saturday, has traditionally been marketed to shoppers to support local businesses. This year Small Business Saturday is Nov. 26.
Denver shopping trends and statistics
Source Deloitte Insights
However, in recent years, NRF said consumer trends are changing as shoppers spread spending out through the entire season, which has started with more deals in October.
For local businesses, Sullivan said, instead of trying to compete on inventory and price, it’s about providing a memorable experience. However, Sullivan added, providing experience is hard for business owners these days.
Dating back to early 2020, Sullivan said business owners are still recovering from losses due to the shutdown forced by the pandemic. They are still struggling with inventory due to global supply-chain issues. They are dealing with how to make money but keep up with the cost of inflation. Many of them also remain short-staffed, Sullivan said.
“It’s hard right now and it is going to be a tough holiday season,” Sullivan
said. “But I believe in Parker because I believe people here know the importance of supporting our business owners. To shoppers, I just say if maybe you know the woman who owns the local store, go the extra mile to spend some of those holiday funds with her.”
Business owners have to make it personal, Sullivan said. They have to show citizens their value and importance as the 2022 holiday season has rolled in.
“Holiday shopping season stress is not new to any of our businesses,” Sullivan said. “It is not a new problem. Before Amazon, there was Walmart and Target. We just need to continue to push.”
Business owners depend on their local communities to support them at this time, Krajewski said.
“Whether that is catering a holiday party, dining out, going to a holiday
event, or purchasing gifts — spending locally means you support a business owner and their employees that likely live in your community. When our local business community is thriving and strong, the community as a whole is strong.”
Agreeing with Krajewski, Wilson said shopping local not only supports local business owners, but it helps keep more of what is spent within the local community, versus going out of state to a large corporation.
“Golden businesses that survived COVID for the most part have bounced back, but it was a rough year or so,” Wilson said. “For many of the businesses that just made it through COVID, the
of a recession is pretty scary.
so much stress small

DIY Décor Ideas for Your Holiday Home
BY COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA
So much of the joy from the holiday season comes from entertaining. Whether you’re throwing a big bash for the neighborhood or hosting a more intimate gathering of close family and friends, filling your home with exciting and colorful decorations is a must.
Rather than buying everything pre-made, consider rounding out your décor collection with some DIY items that highlight your style and use items you may already have
at home! Your guests will be impressed, and your home will have a unique and memorable look. Here are a few ideas to inspire your homemade decoration dreams.
FESTIVE GARLANDS
One of the easiest ways to brighten up your home for the holiday season is to use garlands in every room. With so many different styles to choose from, your garland selection can highlight your personal style and give your guests something interesting to admire.
This paint chip garland idea is an easy and inexpensive way to incorporate bright colors into your decorations. Cut the paint chips into whatever shapes you’d like before you string them together! For a different aesthetic, highlighting citrus fruits as part of your décor is a great way to incorporate cozy holiday smells into your decorating. This dried fruit garland is a wonderful weekend project and uses ingredients you likely already have in the pantry.

SNOWFLAKES AND SNOWMEN
If you’d like a winter theme full of wonder and whimsy, opt for decorations that include lots of snowflakes, snowmen, and white/ blue/silver combinations. These fun snowmen are a great decoration for anywhere the kids are likely to congregate. Since they use clear glass balls and Mason jars as the base, you can easily make several from dollar store items. Cluster a few together and vary their scarves for a fun snowperson family! As a more neutral decoration, painted snowflake jars are perfect for adorning shelves, countertops, and coffee tables. Pair these jars with winter décors, such as cozy pillows and throws, to make your home a winter wonderland.
ELEGANT AND BOLD CENTERPIECES
If you want to get your guests’ attention, then focus on a memorable centerpiece for your holiday table. Pull out all the stops with these gold glittered vases made from Mason jars. You can use gold as suggested or opt for silver or champagne to match a different décor scheme. Filling the jars is half the fun, too— evergreen and flower stems are beautiful, while candy canes and lollipops signal a fun-filled party! If you’d like to put water in the jars
and then top with floating cranberries, leave the top half of the jars unpainted (or frost with a light dusting of glitter). For a fun alternative, make a snowman hat centerpiece that uses an upcycled coffee can as the base. You can decorate the hat with faux or real flowers to match the rest of your décor.
CANDLES AND LIGHTS
One of the most prominent decorations during the holiday season is lighting—from candles to string lights, a warm glow adds depth and comfort to a room. These wooden tree sconces not only provide an interesting background for the candles, but they’re big enough that you don’t have to worry about placing multiples together for an impact. You could even decorate the wooden trees with paint or glitter for a bolder look. For another rustic option, try these stenciled burlap candle holders. Choose silhouettes that match your style, including snowflakes, for something you can leave out all winter! If small candle holders aren’t filling up your space, decorate an inexpensive lantern using various stems and bows, then place an LED candle inside.
Any of these DIY decorations will add a meaningful touch to your home that friends and family alike will remember for years to come.

From family get-togethers to office parties to themed Christmas parties, the holidays are about spending time with the ones you love most. Should you become the host or hostess of said party, you may need a few pointers to get you through it.
Here are eight tips for hosting the perfect Christmas party.
CHOOSE A THEME . Streamline your party planning by choosing a Christmas party theme. Deciding on a theme will not only help guide your menu, activities (such as games, crafts, a photo booth, etc.), and decorations, but it’ll show your guests just how much thought and effort you put into planning the event. Potential traditional holiday party themes include Ugly Christmas Sweater Party, Christmas Character Party, or a Gatsby Christmas. If you’re throwing an online Christmas party, you may want to choose something that’s more interactive, like online holiday bingo or virtual Christmas trivia.
Like an Event-Planning Pro
SET A DATE. There are only four Saturdays in the holiday season, which makes choosing the perfect date for your Christmas party a bit tough. If
there are kids on the guest list, you may need to pick a time that’s early enough that they’ll be tucked in by bedtime. Before you decide on a date,
take your guests, their priorities, and your vision for the party (such as casual cocktails, office party, familyfriendly affair, etc.) into account.

DECIDE ON A LOCATION. Throwing a house party is convenient and affordable. However, if you plan on inviting a large number of guests, you may want to consider renting an event space. If you’re on a tight budget and hosting the party at home isn’t an option, look for a free location (such as a local park, community center, or library). To help you decide on a location,
think about the number of guests, the food you’ll serve, whether or not there will be alcohol at the party, and the overall atmosphere you’d like to create. If you’re hosting a virtual Christmas party, you’ll need to decide on a “virtual venue.” A few options include Zoom, Google Hangouts, and Group FaceTime.
PLAN THE MENU AND SET A BUDGET. After you’ve nailed down the theme, date, and location, you’ll need to plan a menu. If money is tight, consider making the party a potluck or opt for snacks and
SEND AN EVITE. nce you ve figured out the who, what, when, and where, send out email invites. This way, you’ll be able
appetizers instead of a full-on meal. If you’re going the remote route, you could ask everyone to have a packet of cocoa on hand, or you could send out goodie bags ahead of time.
to bypass the stress of purchasing and mailing customized invitations. Just be sure to give your guests plenty of notice
SET THE MOOD. For many, the holidays kindle memories of friends and family, favorite dishes, and welcoming smells. Bring these memories to life by filling your home or the venue with
CREATE A CHRISTMAS PARTY PLAYLIST. A party just isn’t a party without music. If you’re having a hard time choosing songs for your playlist,
cozy, seasonal scents. You can do this by making a stovetop of slow-cooker potpourri, decorating with perfumed pine cones or sweet-smelling garland, or lighting a holiday-inspired candle.
online streaming services like Spotify and Pandora have hundreds of premade holiday playlists available. Just pick one, and you re finished
HANG SOME MISTLETOE. Another affordable way to make your home or venue feel more Christmassy is to hang
a sprig or two of mistletoe. You could hang a spring by the front door, above the staircase, or over the dining table.

MAKE A BUDGET, AND STICK TO IT.
Hosting a party of any kind can be a huge undertaking. Before you get too excited about decorations and potential menu items, decide how much you can afford to spend. If your guest list includes more than five people, you may want to create a spreadsheet to help you budget.
SET A TIMELINE.
Once you know who’s coming, set a timeline to keep your guests happy and entertained before the ball drops. Scheduling 30 minutes for cocktails, an hour for dinner, and 1-2 hours of after-dinner activities and games leading up to the big moment is one way to keep the party going smoothly.
GET FESTIVE.
Whether you decide to go black-tie or host a pajama party, decorations are a must. This could include party hats, streamers, balloons and signage,
guests can treasure memories of this NYE celebration forever.
PUT UP A DIY PHOTO BOOTH.
Speaking of photos, why not add a bit of glitz and glamour to your party with a DIY photo booth. All you need is a backdrop, lighting, and an (optional) box of props. You may want to provide guests with a selfie stick or a smartphone tripod.
CREATE A SIGNATURE COCKTAIL.
In addition to offering guests both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverage options, consider serving a signature cocktail. To prevent crowds, set up self-serve stations with pre-poured flutes or cocktail glasses. This way, guests can refill as they please. Be sure to provide plenty of water, too!
Pro tip: Swap ice for frozen grapes and berries. This will keep drinks cool and free up fridge space.
SERVE EASILY SHAREABLE FOOD.
Unless you’ve decided to go
minimum. Potential NYE party bites include fondue, spinach dip, sliders, chips and salsa, fruit skewers, a charcuterie board or cheese platter, roasted veggie mini-flatbreads, fried ravioli, pigs in a blanket, etc. If you’re hosting close friends and family, you could make it an NYE potluck and ask guests to bring one dish of their own.
• Mini bottles of champagne.
• NYE-inspired sweets (i.e. fortune cookies or candy “midnight” kisses).
• Mini hangover kits.
With these tips, you’re ready to throw a memorable New Year’s Eve party sure to leave a fond, lasting impact on everyone who attends!

Put a Healthy Spin On Your Turkey or Ham This Holiday Season
HOME SWEET HOME
BY COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA
Turkey and ham are tried-and-true staples for any holiday meal, but they often come with unwelcome amounts of calories, fat, and sodium, which can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease. Nutrition may not be your primary concern when preparing a holiday meal. Still, with all the desserts and treats that often pop up this time of year, you might as well take advantage of all the ways to enjoy these favorite holiday meats without the guilt or regret the next day.
Here are some tips on what to look for in a turkey or ham and healthier cooking method alternatives that will save you calories and taste great. Don’t worry: You’ll still be going back for seconds.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A HAM
To save on calories and avoid the postmeal bloat, look for lean ham and options low in sodium. Less sodium will increase the overall nutritional value of the food, too. Leftover lean ham will be great for postholiday sandwiches or breakfast omelets.
HOW TO CHOOSE A TURKEY
Like hams, there are several options when making a turkey selection at the deli. Choosing fresh, frozen, various sizes, and even the gender of your bird can impact the taste and (relative) healthiness of the meat. “Natural” labels typically mean no artificial flavors, colorings, ingredients, chemical preservatives, or any other artificial or synthetic ingredients were used to process the turkey. Choosing a natural turkey is an excellent idea for staying away from highly processed meat. Other options such as free-range, cage-free, and organic are good choices, depending on your preferences and standards. White meat is considerably healthier than dark meat
because it has significantly less fat and fewer calories. However, dark meat has its benefits, too, including being an excellent source of vitamin B6 and iron. Choose both light and dark meat for their individual benefits and flavor.
SKIP THE FRYER
It probably won’t come as a surprise that frying (or worse, deep-frying) your turkey or ham will load on the calories, potentially leading to bloatedness and digestion issues. Fried turkey is often prepared in peanut oil, which is high in calories and saturated fat. Try baking or even air frying your meat for a taste that’s just as good without all the unneeded fat intake.
OPT FOR NO SKIN
On paper, it may seem that deciding to keep the skin on a turkey or not may not be a big deal. After all, a 75-gram portion of turkey breast with skin has approximately 122 calories and 3 grams of fat, while skipping the skin leaves you with 112 calories and 1.7 grams of fat. However, keep in mind that you’ll likely want to indulge in an extra serving or two, alongside all the other side dishes and desserts that are likely to make their way to the table. So, forgoing the skin might do you a favor.
GO EASY ON THE SAUCES
No holiday dinner would be complete without sauces like gravy and cranberry sauce to compliment your turkey or ham. Most of the calories in cranberry sauce come from sugar, while gravy contains high amounts of fat. Watch your portions or skip the sauces altogether to avoid overeating.
Holiday meats don’t have to be total belly bombs, and consumers today have more options than ever—both at the deli and in the kitchen—to prepare a holiday meat that will delight your taste buds without expanding your waistline.

The Best U.S. Trips to Take During the Holiday Season
HOME SWEET HOME
BY COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA
While some may agree that there’s “no place like home for the holidays,” for others, Christmastime means vacation time. If you’re thinking about heading out of town for the holidays, here are seven destinations to put on your list.
BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN NOVEMBER
Montpellier, Vermont. From the changing colors of the leaves to the mouth-watering smell of freshly-baked desserts to bonfires to pumpkin everything, autumn is an all-around cozy season—this is especially true for those who live in Montpellier, the capital city of Vermont. Montpellier is a picturesque city located in New England. t s filled with uropean charm, breathtaking architecture, maple syrup farms like Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks, and vineyards. In the fall, Vermont gets a bit chilly, so you may need to bundle up. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the great outdoors. Vermont is one of the nation’s top destinations for experiencing fall foliage, after all.
Charleston, South Carolina. If you’re looking for somewhere that’s romantic and irresistibly charming, Charleston is the place to go. This small city has an interesting history, (several) delicious food options, and several boutique hotels to choose from. A few standout restaurants include The Grocery, Fleet Landing, and Oak Steakhouse. What’s more? In the fall, temperatures range between 58 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit—perfect weather for wandering one of the many cobblestone streets. And, if you’re a fan of ghost stories, you’ll be delighted to know the town offers spooky ghost tours, including a tour of Magnolia Cemetery and The USS Yorktown.

Wilmington, North Carolina. Just three hours north of Charleston sits Wilmington. Wilmington and its nearby beaches—Kure, Carolina, and Wrightsville—makes it a fantastic place to visit, no matter the season. This coastal college town is home to the Seahawks (the mascot of the University of North Carolina Wilmington), various museums, including the Cape Fear Museum of History and Science and the Cameron Art Museum, and scrumptious shrimp and seafood. Whether you’re interested in dancing the night away downtown, lounging on the beach, or shopping till you drop in Mayfaire, Wilmington has a bit of something for everyone. Just be sure to stop at The Dixie Grill for a bacon, egg, and cheese scramble before you leave!
Scottsdale, Arizona. Phoenix isn’t the only gem in Arizona. Scottsdale is a beautiful city to visit in the fall. The average temperatures range between 49 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit, which is ideal for hiking one of the city’s many trails, strolling the Scottsdale Artwalk, horseback riding, or viewing the Sonoran esert while floating in a hot air balloon. (It’s typically colder at night, so you may want to bring a sweater or a light jacket.) Thanks to its scenic views and mild fall temperatures, Scottsdale is also perfect for al fresco dining. If you’re willing to splurge a bit, consider vacationing like a celebrity at the Sanctuary Resort—it’s known for its high-end spa, luxury amenities, and enormous five-star suites.
BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN DECEMBER
New York City, New York. New York City is cinematically referred to as one of the world’s greatest cities—and for good reason. From viewing the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree to ice skating in Central Park to shopping
on Fifth Avenue to browsing the holiday markets, there’s always something to do in New York City. In addition to museums, Broadway, and general entertainment, New York City is also home to some of the most prestigious restaurants in merica. You can find any cuisine you re craving. For tasty Thai food, head to Laut NYC. For a romantic evening and live piano, visit Chez Josephine. Before you get too excited, you should know that the average daytime high in NYC is 42 degrees Fahrenheit. If you do decide to visit NYC in December, be sure to bring a heavy coat, gloves, and a hat.
Salt Lake City, Utah. If you’re an avid skier, December is the best time to hit the slopes of Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, which are approximately 2 1/2 hours from Salt Lake City. In addition to skiing, Salt Lake City has a variety of festive holiday activities, including horse-drawn carriage rides through Temple Square and Christmas at the Grand merican otel, a five-star hotel known for its delectable breakfast options. If you’re traveling with children, you may choose to have breakfast with Santa at Gardner Village or see the ZooLights! at Utah’s Hogle Zoo.
Duck Key, Florida. Tired of battling the frigid weather? Escape the cold and travel to Duck Key. Duck Key gifts its visitors with sunny weather and the opportunity to enjoy a carefree lifestyle year-round. From boating and swimming to fishing and paddle boarding, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in Duck Key, from sun up to sundown. Duck Key is on the small side, so you may want to walk or hop on a bicycle. Some vacationers opt to ride a golf cart around the island. If you’re interested in living life in luxury, book a villa or hotel room at the island’s premier resort Hawks Cay Resort.
