SUMMER JAMMIN’
oldenites and outof-towners gathered at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden for one of the largest city events held since the easing of the COVID-19 pandemic made such gatherings possible again, the fourth annual Golden Summer Jam. The event brought Goldenites together for food, fun and music, with the latter provided by three bands with Golden connections. Golden based country and Americana band Derek Hall & The Possibilities kicked off the event and were followed on stage by Summer Jam favorite The Great Salmon Famine. Then Golden native Caleb Thoemke took the stage with his wife Emma Cole and their band Wildermiss to conclude the night.

Friends remember Arvada hero for his voice, heart Johnny Hurley stepped up, Arvada police chief said BY PAUL ALBANI-BURGIO PALBANIBURGIO@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Brent Kaufman will remember his friend Johnny Hurley as a leader and a man of character who “stepped up and saw where help was needed,” whether he was helping to feed and clothe the homeless or letting people going through tough times stay in his Golden home. Following the shooting incident that left three dead in Olde Town Arvada on June 21, Arvada Police Chief Link Strate has repeatedly noted that those qualities were on

In a press conference on June 22, Strate described Hurley as a “true hero who likely disrupted what could’ve been a greater loss of life.” On June 25, Strate confirmed that Hurley shot Ronald Troyke after Troyke shot and killed Arvada police officer Gordon Beesley. Hurley, holding Troyke’s gun, was then shot and killed by an Arvada police officer. “Given who he was, I am not surprised he was the first one who stepped up in a time of need out in the world,” said Kaufman, who had known Hurley for the last seven or eight years. “He was somebody who was not afraid to use his voice SEE HURLEY, P2

Most Golden residents will soon see an increase in how much they pay for trash and recycling service. But city leaders say that’s because they will be paying for a new service that will allow them to save money in the long run. On June 7, the Golden City Council unanimously instructed city staff to move forward with finalizing a contract with Republic Services, Inc. to become the city’s new provider of single hauler waste collection services for the next five years. Republic Services will take over for GFL Environmental, which has provided trash and recycling services to around 4,500 households in Golden since 2015. This time around, the city had received five bids from companies seeking to provide waste collection services to the city with four of the five bids being very competitive in terms of pricing, Golden Sustainability Manager Theresa Worsham said. However, Worsham wrote in a memo to the council that she was recommending the city go with the bid from Republic Services, in large part because staff felt Republic’s SEE COMPOST, P5
