Casa Bonita opens for guided tours No food yet, but still surprisingly satisfying BY BOB WOOLEY BWOOLEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The fountain in front is dry, but the doors are open. Familiar sounds of mariachi music are piped through speakers in the ceiling, and strings of flicker lights illuminate the faux Mexican village facades. Free tours are being offered at Casa Bonita every hour from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. There are T-shirts and trinkets available near the entrance, but the real draw is a chance to see a place so intertwined with Colorado lore in a way you’ve never seen it before— empty. As the city of Golden continues to recover from the ravages of the COVID-19, it is set to receive a significant boost in the form of over $5 million from the American Rescue Plan Federal passed by Congress. Now comes the fun part, figuring out how to use those funds. On June 15, the Golden city council held a preliminary discussion about just that. Some of the ideas included providing raises to city employees, investing in broadband infrastructure and creating new programs that could provide financial support to needy families. The council is not yet close to making any definitive decisions. Golden Finance Director Jeff Hansen kicked off the conversation by explaining that an American Rescue Plan allocation list produced by the state showed that the city will now receive $5.2 million after months of the city being told it would receive $4.6 million. Hansen said the state did not provide an explanation for the change but said it is his “best guess” that the added funds are the result of allocations being revised based on 2020 census data. Hansen said the city has also learned that it will be able to have

What’s open and what’s still closed in Golden? It’s (finally!) time to plan your summer BY PAUL ALBANI-BURGIO PALBANIBURGIO@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Let’s face it: it’s been a long, strange pandemic. So long, in fact, that the recent return to something much more closely resembling normalcy has almost felt rather sudden, even as it could hardly come at a better time as Goldenites rush out to make the most of a gorgeous Golden summer and make up for all the fun they missed out on last year (note to parents: your kids are ready to do stuff). But while it’s no secret that many people, organizations and busi-

nesses alike are increasingly back to their regular schedules, many others are still closed or at least not quite get back to business as usual, which can have the effect of making planning a rather confusing and labor-intensive process. Luckily, we’ve done the work so you don’t have to and compiled this list showing what’s open, what’s still not and what to expect when you head out. So go enjoy your summer. It’s been a long time coming.
