Dear Golden Community,

This past year has been a busy one here at the Golden Chamber of Commerce. We have been working hard to not only support our member businesses and our community, but as a business organization here in Golden, we’ve been working on our business. When you run a business, sometimes you get so busy working IN your business, that you forget to work ON your business. So, with the help of our Board, our Ambassadors, and our staff, we have spent a great deal of our energy this past year working on the Golden Chamber of Commerce.

Working on our business provided the Chamber with a chance to focus on who we are, what we do, why we do it, and how we accomplish change. These focused conversations and work allowed us to reflect, internally, as an organization. And through that reflection, we are excited to reveal, externally, our new brand!

A brand is so much more than a logo. A brand is a visual symbol of your business and a brand is how you identify who you are.

Our new brand brings together our focus on Golden and on business. We are focused on helping businesses succeed, helping businesses grow, and helping people connect. Strong businesses need flourishing communities that, in turn, feed more growth and opportunity for all. We complete that Golden circle. That is our focus and that is our brand.

Thank you for being a community that supports one another and supports the Golden Chamber of Commerce! It is a joy to serve our Golden business community!

The Golden Chamber of Commerce has a dedicated staff here to support our business community. They not only make our Chamber thrive, but they are great community members and all-around good people to know! They are here to help so feel free to reach out.

A MESSAGE FROM THE 2023 GOLDEN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CHAIR

Dear Members of the Golden Chamber of Commerce and community,

The Chamber’s purpose is to support our member businesses and ensure that our community (our residents, business owners, employees, and visitors) benefit by having thriving businesses that offer quality goods and services.

For the past few years, the Chamber has put a renewed focus on being advocates for our businesses and this year we have taken steps to improve our communication about what that means. We have discussed with many members, and non-members, about what we could do better, and our research showed that we needed to update our brand to better reflect the dynamic and innovative businesses that make up our membership.

Our new branding will include a new logo, a redesigned website, and a renewed focus on providing the resources, support, and networking that our members need to succeed.

Branding your business is important as it's a crucial element in making a memorable

impression on consumers, making them aware of your products or services, and persuading them to recall and/or engage with your business. If we can help as you assess ways to improve your business, don’t hesitate to call.

We encourage you to get involved with the Chamber, attend our events, and share your feedback with us. Together, we can make the Golden Chamber of Commerce an even stronger and more vibrant organization. Thank you for your continued support.

We are focused on Golden and focused on business.

Sincerely,

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Golden Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors

What does it mean to be a Chamber Ambassador?

Ambassadors are a group of business leaders in the Chamber that are experienced and active Chamber members. Being an Ambassador for the Golden Chamber of Commerce is an important role. The primary reason for the Ambassador program is to welcome and greet our members at various Chamber functions, as well as aid in the retention of existing members and recruitment of new members. This energetic group of people helps maintain contact with other Chamber members while promoting the Chamber of Commerce and its purpose… and of course, having fun while doing so! Simply put, Ambassadors are our cheerleaders and provide a crucial link between the Chamber and our members.

We are so thankful for all of the members that have volunteered to go above and beyond and serve as an Ambassador in 2023:

BUSINESS ADVOCACY

From the Oxford dictionary:

Noun:

A person who publicly supports or recommends a particular cause or policy.

Synonyms: champion; supporter; backer; promoter; proponent

Verb:

To publicly recommend or support.

At the Golden Chamber of Commerce, we believe in business advocacy, as both a noun and a verb. Our goal is to be a Champion, a Catalyst, and a Convener for business in Golden. Our business advocacy work can be seen on local, county-wide, and statewide levels:

LOCAL: BEING A VOICE FOR BUSINESS

The Golden Chamber is focused on the economic and civic interests of the community and serving as a connection between city management, city council, and the business community. We do that by writing letters of support or speaking to City Council on behalf of an issue that affects multiple businesses and by participating in local Golden initiatives, to provide a unique perspective on how local decisions can impact the business community.

COUNTY WIDE: JEFFERSON COUNTY BUSINESS LOBBY (JCBL)

JCBL serves as the unified voice of more than 25,000 JeffCo businesses advocating for public policies that will strengthen the business climate in the City of Golden and beyond. The Golden Chamber serves as one of the representatives that advocates for businesses in Jefferson County with government and stays informed of state legislation impacting businesses in our community.

STATEWIDE: COLORADO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & COLORADO COMPETITIVE COUNCIL (C3)

The Golden Chamber participates as a member of the Colorado Chamber of Commerce and also the Colorado Competitive Council. Through these organizations, we are made aware of and participate in monitoring and weighing in on legislation that can impact Colorado’s business climate.

COMMUNITY: KNOWING THE ISSUES

Additionally, the Golden Chamber of Commerce stays involved in social issues that impact our business community. From affordable housing to food security, from workforce development to public health issues, we make sure to have a seat at the table for important conversations that impact those living and working in Golden.

The Importance of Branding in Business Logo More than a

Long before the invention of social media, the internet, and even television, branding was an early tool used in identification. In fact, the practice of branding dates to as early as 2700 BC according to an article by the Smithsonian Magazine. In ancient and in more recent history, livestock farmers all had (and still have) a unique and distinct symbol that is seared into the hide of cattle and other livestock to help identify the animal’s owner. These symbols are unique to each farmer and is their brand.

In today’s modern world, every business also has a brand and thankfully, the process doesn’t have to involve searing anything!

So, what is a brand? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a brand (noun) as it relates to business is “a class of goods identified by name as the product of a single firm or manufacturer” and is also defined as “a public image, reputation, or identity conceived of as something to be marketed or promoted”.

While this dictionary definition provides some clarity, we decided to ask local experts and Chamber members, that have assisted many businesses with their brand, to answer the question “What is a Brand?”

Andy Yates, Principal of Stone Strategy & Design, says “the simplest definition is that a brand is any product or service that is organized under a name.”

Katrina Kowalski, Creative Director of Branding Design Company elaborates on this

by adding that, “a brand is a multi-dimensional construct consisting of all the things that differentiate your brand from competitors and make it memorable to its audience.”

Jen DeVore Richter, author of “Outsource Your Marketing” answered that “a brand is the promise you make to your customers, employees, and partners. A brand is the way you consistently show up and how they experience working with you. A brand starts with unique identifiers such as your logo, photography, messaging, and marketing platforms look and feel, but it should also include the customer service process starting on day one. A brand should include how people feel when they experience your business' service and if they feel part of an organization that values them.”

This past year, the Golden Chamber of Commerce has spent a great deal of time thinking about what we do as a business and our “why”. This process led us to have a deeper understanding of who we are as an organization, why we do what we do, and how we can be even more effective. Through that deep dive into our business, we discovered that it was time for our brand identity to change. But why is it important for a business to have a brand identity in the first place? Again, we asked our local experts and here is what they told us:

Andy Yates shared with us that, “Brand identity is the visual and verbal representation of how a brand’s story and strategy come to life. Having a brand identity goes beyond a logo or tagline, it is the full representation of how a brand acts, talks, and navigates a given market.

showcase your brand:

1Determine the key attributes you want to be known for by your customers, employees, and partners

2Determine the positioning that will set you apart from your competition including your market dominating position

3Design your brand identity including the logo, social media handles, domain name, photography, fonts, colors, etc

4Create your brand guidelines which serves as the “rule book” for how your brand should be expressed in external and internal communications

5Map out your buyer’s journey starting on day one through their lifetime to include all touchpoints and experiences

6Build your marketing strategy and team

“A brand isn’t just one thing, like a logo, or sign - it’s everything tangible and intangible, from your company’s values to the company organization, messaging, voice and tone, customer experience, visuals, smells, taste, feel ...”
Katrina Kowalski
Creative Director of Branding Design Company
Tips from Jen DeVore Richter, former marketing executive for NASA and local author, speaker, and marketing consultant on how to

The importance of having a well-defined brand identity is to communicate your story with clarity and empathy—building value and equity over time in the hearts and minds of those engaging with your brand.”

Katrina Kowalski echoes Andy’s thoughts by adding “Strong brands create a sense of identity and belonging, which also builds trust and loyalty from customers. They often evoke emotions, memories, and reactions. A solid brand identity will support the success of the business through differentiation, recognition, trust, credibility, loyalty, and will even drive sales and revenue through price premiums because customers will be more willing to pay for a brand they trust and value.”

And George Riffel, owner of AlphaGraphics, reminds us that in its simplest purpose, “A brand is easy to identify to the public. Brand identity is critical to the survival and growth of any organization.”

After a great deal of work by our Board, staff and the amazing team at Stone Strategy and Design, the Golden Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to reveal in this magazine not only our new logo that was identified through this process, but our new overall brand identity. Having dedicated a significant amount of time working on our new brand, we want to make sure to use it effectively. And so we asked

our experts, “what steps can a business take to showcase their brand?”

George Riffel shared that “showcasing your brand is a multi-channel effort. We suggest a mix of social media advertising, direct mail, vehicle branding, local Chamber engagement and volunteering in charitable community projects. All channels should carry a consistent message over a pre-planned period of time.”

We like that George recognizes local Chamber engagement as an effective way to support your brand. We couldn’t agree more!

In addition, Andy Yates reminds us that, “Where and how a brand shows up is dependent on the industry and market. Context and relevancy are always important, also having a clear goal in the purpose. From recruitment to sales or even just brand awareness, knowing what the desired outcome is guides the conversations a brand can and should participate in.”

And Katrina Kowalski adds “There are several ways for businesses to showcase their brand. Start with building the solid foundation of the brand strategy. That will set the blueprint for everything to build on top of it. Once the brand is established, consistency in visuals and messaging across all channels including websites, social media, advertising, packaging, collateral, signage, etc is key. Businesses should ensure their services or products meet or exceed customer exceptions in quality and service. Positive experiences lead to loyalty and referrals.”

Here in Golden we are home to some of the most recognizable brands in the world such as Coors, Ball, and Kong. We are also home to well-known brands like Yo Colorado, Spyderco, Holidaily Brewing, and Vitrazza. And locally, we are home to the brands that are essential to our Golden identity such as Buffalo Rose, Gold Mine Cupcakes, Baby Doe’s Clothing, and so many more.

Having a global brand, that has been a core part of Golden for 150 years, is remarkable and something to be proud of. We asked Lacey Golonka, Community Affairs Manager for Molson Coors, how has Coors kept their brand relevant for 150 years? She said, “From its early days as miner’s delight after a hard-day’s work,

to surviving prohibition, to revolutionizing the industry with the all-aluminum can, to being a cultural symbol for renegades and rockstars. The true grit of the brand is something that has allowed us to stay relevant over time.”

Flipping through the pages of this community magazine, a wide variety of businesses are showcased. And while there are certainly many logos on display, there is so much more to a business brand than the logo. Behind every logo is a story, a purpose, an identity, a drive, and as stated above, “true grit”. Katrina Kowalski sums it up perfectly, “A brand isn’t just one thing, like a logo, or sign - it’s everything tangible and intangible; from your company’s values to the company organization, messaging, voice and tone, customer experience, visuals, smells, taste, feel, etc. Every element contributes to the overall brand and how people think of you.”

As a Chamber, we are so honored to represent so many wonderful businesses and their brands in the Golden community and we are proud to officially release our new brand identity and logo to the Golden community!

Our logo tells a distinct and unique story, and that story is our brand:

Just like the scenery around Golden, our Chamber of Commerce is unique and unrivaled. Mirroring the landscape consisting of diverse elements and features, the Chamber brings together businesses of all kinds to collaborate on a brighter future for Golden.

Thank you to the team at Stone Strategy & Design for their incredible work in helping us find our brand identity and designing a beautiful new logo!

Perspective and Thoughts From the City Manager After 6-months on the Job

Iam honored to serve the community of Golden as its City Manager. I began on September 12, 2022 and am excited for my first summer in town and to experience all the outdoor recreation, events, and actvities first-hand. Rather than run through a list of accomplishments over the past 6-months, I thought I would share my perspective on the community as a long-time Colorado resident, but a newcomer to Golden and the Front Range.

The City of Golden is unique, and despite its proximity to Denver, it acts and feels much more like a small mountain town than a non-descript suburban city. I attribute this

to Golden’s history, the vibrant downtown core, strong non-profit and cultural organizations, and its incredible outdoor amenities and recreational opportunities that create a unique feeling of separation from the hustle and bustle of the Front Range. At the same time, it is home to a growing, highly regarded engineering university, flourishing corporate, high tech, industrial and small-business enterprises, and an ever-expanding restaurant, brewery, and bar presence.

Our uniqueness generates excitement, community pride, and economic vitality, along with competing priorities and pressures on our residents, city services, and infrastructure. We value Golden’s history

and the role it plays in maintaining the City’s economic vibrance and sense of community, and are working to make Golden more accessible, affordable, diverse, sustainable, and welcoming.

Over the past 6-months my excitement has continued to grow, and I am thrilled to serve in a leadership role within a wonderful community working with a dedicated and capable Mayor and City Council, an incredibly talented and professional staff. Ultimately, the people in Golden are what make it special, and I am proud to serve along with the civic, business, and nonprofit leaders who make Golden a wonderful place to be.

Community events happen because of the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. Each year the Golden Chamber of Commerce needs hundreds of helping hands to make our events safe, successful and fun. Volunteering is a way to be a part of a local event and give back at the same time. We want our local residents and businesses to feel connected to the events we provide and the best way to do so, is to be a part of them! Please consider giving some of your time to a local community event. To get involved in any of the Golden Chamber’s community events as a volunteer, please email or call our Programs & Events Manager, Lora Knowlton, Lora@goldenchamber.org or 303-279-3113, option 2. You can also visit our website, GoldenChamber.org, and sign up under our volunteer link on the website.

ANNUAL COMMUNITY EVENTS

THE GOLDEN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Community events serve many purposes in supporting the local economy. Events bring people into town, both locals and visitors. Many people that come for events get to experience the community for the first time and often come back to visit again. Community events serve as traditions for the local community and many people’s hometown memories often include attending annual events that were special to them.

Community events are also a way for local businesses to

connect to the community through sponsorships, vendor and exhibitor booths, parade floats, and more. And last, community events put money back into local business. Events drive traffic into local stores and restaurants, but not only that, they often serve as fundraisers for nonprofit organizations to provide programming and supportive services year round.

The three main legs on which GYP stands are community impact, professional development, and social engagement. These three facets not only benefit the community but build real, lasting relationships for our members to grow their businesses. As an organization, we have received feedback from multiple leaders of the community in the non-profit, private, and public sectors stating that they would like more input and involvement from the younger generation. GYP gives young professionals a chance to have their voices heard in Golden. Our members range from those who are just looking to gain friends after moving to the area, to those who are looking to network and grow their businesses while providing value to their community. It is truly an honor to be able to serve as Chair of GYP and I hope you get the chance to see what GYP is all about!
