RiverRun trailhead project underway Arapahoe County Open Space funds given for second phase

By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com Phase one of the RiverRun project is underway, and the Arapahoe County Open Space Fund has awarded Englewood $500,000 to fund the project’s second phase. The River Run project is designed to revitalize about seven miles of the South Platte River running through Littleton, Englewood and Sheridan. The effort is being spearheaded by the South Platte River Group. The organization is comprised of representatives from Englewood, Sheridan, Littleton, Arapahoe

County, South Suburban Parks and Recreation District, the Colorado Water Conservation Board, Urban Drainage and Flood Control District, and the Army Corps of Engineers. Arapahoe County officials announced Englewood’s funding application had been approved as part of the county’s open space fund fall grant cycle. The grant funding will be used for continued work on the RiverRun trailhead, located along the South Platte River at Oxford Avenue. When completed, the trailhead project will include a picnic pavilion, playground, restroom facilities, ADA access to the river, and access to regional trails. Future of facilities explored City looking at safety services building and civic center By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com

Englewood City Manager Eric Keck and Mayor Joe Jefferson expect extensive discussions over the future of the safety services building and the civic center as the new year gets underway. All parties agree Englewood’s safety services building should be replaced, but the 2016 budget doesn’t include the $15 million to $20 million needed to pay for the project. “The building was constructed using California design of uninsulated block in the 1970s,” Keck said during a recent interview. “It is a challenge to heat and cool, plus it is too small for our needs. For example, a large closet has become a very small locker room for the female police officers.”
