Pancakes, Santa draw a crowd Several hundred attend Englewood’s Breakfast with Santa event
By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com To borrow from a song, the weather outside was frightful, but the chilly temperature and snow didn’t stop families from filling the rooms at the Malley Senior Recreation Center on Dec. 12 with warmth and smiles as they gathered for the annual Breakfast with Santa event. Breakfast was served in the center’s ballroom. The menu was pancakes prepared this year by Kelly Kuper of Flippin’ Flapjacks. She had the grill going full blast and said she expected to serve about 1,600 pancakes during the event. Maria Garcia was one of the adults who had children eat first, and she smiled as she helped her 3-year-old granddaughter eat pancakes. “I brought my children to this when they were young. It was fun for them, and I had fun watching them,” the Sheridan resident said. “Now I am bringing

“I like Santa,” the 6-year-old said. “I like Santa because he brings us presents.”
After nearly two years of applications and appeals, the Englewood School Board approved a settlement agreement with TriCity Academy regarding the academy’s charter school applications. “The board agreed to relinquish exclusive authority to approve a charter school application for the TriCity Academy,” said Adele Reester, attorney for the school district. “This agreement allows the academy to request the Charter School Institute to consider TriCity’s application to open a kindergarten through eighth-grade charter school in the Englewood School district with a proposal to begin classes in August 2016.” The Colorado Charter School Institute is the state’s only non-school district organization authorized to approve a charter school application. Rick Gillit, who seeks to open the charter school in Englewood, said he and the other academy proponents must now wait for the Charter School Institute’s decision. “This process has continued for so long,” he said. “We can’t secure a building until we have a charter agreement and, since that still hasn’t happened, we have had proposals for buildings come and go. I believe this is as close as we have been to receiving approval to open the charter school. I just hope we get that approval so we can move forward.” The district’s press release stated that with the completion of the agreement, the academy will withdraw its latest appeal to the Colorado Board of Education, and the academy will not request that the state board revoke Englewood School District’s exclusive chartering authority. The institute was scheduled to consider the academy request Dec. 8. Reester
