Council chooses Jefferson as mayor Unanimous choice comes after bid for Gillit falters
By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com The winners of this month’s Englewood City Council elections — Laurett Barrentine, Amy Martinez, Rita Russell and incumbent Joe Jefferson — were sworn in Nov. 16. They joined continuing members Rick Gillit, Linda Olson and Steve Yates in electing Jefferson as the new mayor. “I am honored the members of council selected me to fill the position as mayor for the next two years,” Jefferson said. “My top priority is to foster collaboration. I want to build bridges of cooperation so we can function as a team and get things done for the city.”
He said he will work to establish an action plan fairly quickly so the council will know the goals and work to achieve them. “I feel I also will serve as mayor with energy and enthusiasm,” Jefferson said. “Part of the job as mayor extends beyond the city borders, with Englewood’s work with other communities and in regional matters, where I plan to be a strong representative and advocate for our city.” The election of the mayor was held after the incoming councilmembers took the oath of office administered by Municipal Judge Vincent Atencio. Olson, the mayor pro tem, conducted the process. Gillit was nominated and the vote was three votes for him and four opposed. Gillit voted for himself and was supported by Olson and Martinez. Distillery serves as owner’s dream Devil’s Head in Englewood produces a trio of spirits on site
By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com More than a year of hard work dealing with regulations and getting his Englewood facility in operation helped Ryan White realize his long-held dream to own and operate his own business, Devil’s Head Distillery.
“I had a 20-year career as a territorial manager for a carpet manufacturer. It was a pretty good job, but really didn’t challenge me like I wanted to be challenged,” the Littleton man said. “For most of those years, I wanted to open a distillery. Opening a distillery is a huge undertaking, so I kept putting it off until about a year ago. Then I left my job when I decided to make my dream come true.” He said he needed to come up with a name for the distillery and, because of his enjoyment hiking and climbing Devil’s
Head summit, which is part of the Rampart Range in Douglas County, he decided he would use that name for his business and his spirits. The building at 3296 S. Acoma St. houses his operation, and the distillery produces gin, vodka and aquavit. Aquavit originated in Scandinavia and is a gin-like spirit that uses caraway seeds as the main flavoring herb. Inside the building is a tasting room Distillery continues on Page 5
