Contract talks over charter at impasse Deadline has passed for school district-TriCity Academy agreement By Tom Munds tmunds@colorado communitymedia.com
Vote time: Mail-in ballots expected to arrive to residents week of Oct. 12 See Page 3
The Englewood School District and TriCity Academy Charter School negotiators failed to reach a contract agreement by the Sept. 9 deadline, and representatives of both sides agree
there is no established procedure to deal with impasse. The deadline was established by the Colorado Board of Education in June when the board upheld the academy’s appeal of the Englewood School District’s rejection of the application to establish a charter school within that school district. The state board ordered the Englewood School District to grant a charter and successfully complete contract negotiations by Sept. 9. “The sides didn’t reach agreement on contract details by the
state-established negotiation deadline,” said Adele Reester, attorney representing the school district. “The school district then made the decision not to extend the negotiations.” No further discussions have been held regarding the contract and Reester said what will happen next is unknown as there is no established procedure. Rick Gillit, academy application team member, agrees there are no guidelines on how to proceed in this matter. He said the charter school proponents
are working with their legal representative to determine their next step. “We thought we had an agreement and I signed revision five,” he said. “But the school district came back with revision six that contained additional requirements. We didn’t agree with the additional requirements so there is no contract agreement.” He said supporters of having a charter school in Englewood are very disappointed but will

The voices of some of the speakers and the honoree reflected their emotion during the Sept. 19 gathering for the ceremony naming Englewood High School’s
new courts in honor of longtime tennis coach Jim Tucker. About 75 people attended the event that was the results of the efforts of Tad Deering and Mike Bennett who played tennis for Tucker in the mid-1980s. “Coach Tucker convinced me to start playing tennis as a sixthgrader. It is a sport my family and I still play,” Deering said. “But more importantly, coach Tucker taught me and probably hundreds of other young men and women about the value of hard
work, how to develop confidence and other life lessons that helped us grow up and mature.” Troy Deering, Tad’s younger brother, said naming the courts for the coach wasn’t about winning medals, it was not about winning championships, but it was about how Tucker gave unselfishly of his time and efforts to all the kids he taught and coached. Tennis coaches from other schools like longtime Cherry Creek coach Kirk Price spoke at
the ceremony. “I have known Jim (Tucker) for many, many years,” Price said. “Tennis wasn’t big in Englewood but Jim worked with kids, got them interested in the sport and they competed. His teams didn’t always win matches and his team never won a state championship but it was Jim’s devotion and work with kids that resulted in his being a finalist for National Tennis Coach of the Year in 2008.”

Artworks on display Show at Malley Center features work of amateur artists By Tom Munds tmunds@colorado communitymedia.com Artists can submit works in oil, water color or acrylic paintings as well as drawings, photography and other mediums for the Englewood Art Show at the Malley Senior Recreation Center, 3380 S. Lincoln St. The show opens Sept. 30 and entries will remain on display through Oct. 10 at the center. “This is the 10th year of the show and we are expecting all 70 spots in the show to be filled,” project coordinator Cheryl Ad-
amson said. “Sixteen of the artists are Englewood residents. The show is open to amateur artists and anyone from the metro area can apply to have his or her works put on display.” This year, for the first time, the show will accept three-dimensional works like sculpture and pottery, Adamson said. Art works will be on display at Malley in the center lobby plus some works line the main hall. Those interested can stop by to check out the works. The viewing hours are from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The event is free and those who attend are asked to cast votes for the People’s Choice Award.
