Ron Walker, center, of Mr. Steak, a Denver-area cover band that revives hair metal, belts out lyrics to Van Halen’s “Jump” at the Alferd Packer Bacon Party in downtown Littleton on Aug. 29. Walker called the event “awesome” and said, “If you’ve got bacon, you’ve got to have a little steak in there somewhere.” Rotarians Nancy Taoka, left, and Bobbi McCombs prepare platters of free bacon samples. McCombs works for Boar’s Head, which provided the bacon.

The third annual Alferd Packer Bacon Party brought hundreds of people to the parking lot of Reinke Bros. in downtown Littleton for food, music and a good cause. The Aug. 29 event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Littleton, featured four bands, a half-dozen or so food trucks and free bacon samples. It also was an opportunity to help the nonprofit organization Free the Girls by donating a gently used bra. The group provides job opportunities for survivors of sex trafficking in developing countries, and the bras will be sold by women as part of that program.

Let the games begin: Fall sports season gets underway. See Page 23

Pirates softball opener brings out crowd of fans Teams get vocal support as Weld Central squad visits By Tom Munds tmunds@colorado communitymedia.com Mother Nature smiled and provided almost perfect opening-day weather, with a few clouds offering occasional shade, as the Englewood High School softball team moved out on its home diamond to play its

first game of the season. There were about 75 or 80 fans at the Aug. 24 game at the EHS softball field. Most were cheering for the Pirates, but there were several fans who applauded the play of the Weld Central team. The field was in good shape for the first game of the season. The grass was neatly cut, the ground areas around the bases and around the mound were raked smooth and the white chalk lines stood out in contrast to the dirt baselines.

Family, friends and fellow students occupied just about all the seats on the two small sets of bleachers behind home plate. Most spectators were aware there was no concession stand available, so quite a few brought their own refreshments. There was an abundance of water bottles, cups and quite a few bags of munchies among the crowd. Vocal encouragement as well as cheers and applause for the play of both teams were loud. Cheers and shouts of “way to Pirates continues on Page 4

Englewood voters will elect four individuals to serve on the city council and only one is an incumbent. Voters in District 1 and District 3 will select individuals to represent their districts, and voters across the city will select two at-large representatives. District 3 will be represented by incumbent Joe Jefferson, who was unopposed in his bid for another term on the council. Three candidates are seeking to represent District 1: former councilmember Laurett Barrentine, John Grazulis and Lewis Fowler. This is the first campaign for public officer for Grazulis and Fowler. Voters will select two at-large representatives. Because of term limits, incumbent Bob McCaslin could not run again. Incumbent Jill Wilson never announced her plans, but did not take the necessary steps to seek another term on the council. Four residents — Danielle Holley, Amy Martinez, Rita Russell and Amber Lee Jorgensen — are in the contest for the two council seats. Russell was Council continues on Page 4
