‘Amazing’ students honored at luncheon Chamber recognizes young scholars for work, achievement By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com When Lili Espinoza-Monroy, a student at Bishop Elementary, walks into a room, it lights up. Heather Carr, of Colorado’s Finest High School of Choice, is a determined young woman who has not missed a class, studied English at Arapahoe Community College

and wrote the entire script of her school’s drama presentation. Those were among the plaudits shared with an audience of chamber members, parents and faculty at a recognition luncheon honoring Englewood students who stood out this year for their work and achievement in school and in the community. The event, held May 3 at the Malley Senior Recreation Center, was hosted for the eighth consecutive year by the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce, which revived the longtime tradition that had been discontin-

ued for a while. “We hold this event each year to recognize students for their work and achievements in their schools and in our community,” chamber director Randy Penn said. “Faculty members recommend one student for each school for recognition. The nomination letters tell some amazing facts about these young people.” Wendy Rubin, Englewood Schools superintendent, also spoke to the audience before the ceremonies began. AVAST, YE MATEYS

By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com A spicy aroma filled the room as individuals uncovered their entries at the May 4 annual chili cook-off at Bishop Elementary School. About 50 people gathered at the cafeteria tables as cooks brought in their chili entries. But other foods also were available for tasting, which is why organizers called the evening “Bishop Chili and Chew.” A unique addition was the table offering parents and children an opportunity to sample a variety of healthy foods. The taste table offered samples of healthy snacks like fruits and vegatables, and those attending the event had the chance to taste the cook-off’s five entries.
