Student artwork displays diversity Englewood Public Library serves as gallery for several hundred pieces
By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com All the works of various styles and subjects that make up the annual student art show now fill most available spaces at the Englewood Public Library. A reception for the young artists was held March 3 to open the month-long exhibit displaying the works of Englewood

students ranging from kindergartners to 12th-graders. Several hundred works created by Englewood student artists hang on the walls and line display cases throughout the Englewood Public Library. The works include paintings, drawings, sculptures and other media. Generally, the works are put up by the schools to make it easier for the artists and their parents to locate and view the students’ work. At the March 3 reception, Benicio Holguin pointed out his work hanging on the wall of the children’s section to his dad, Jose. Artwork continues on Page 17

Group brings sports gear to Nicaraguans Donated equipment from Englewood schools called ‘a blessing’
By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com Smiles on the faces of the Nicaraguan students expressed their appreciation, and school staff called it a blessing as volunteers delivered donations of sports equipment to four schools in northern Nicaragua. Basketballs donated by Englewood High School and baseball equipment do-
nated by the Charles Hay World School and St. Louis Catholic School were delivered to four schools near the city of Somoto, Nicaragua, by members of the Casa Unida Foundation team. The group was in the area for several projects, and they gathered the sports equipment because foundation members learned the Nicaraguan schools receive no money for sports equipment or physical education. In addition to the equipment from the three Englewood schools, the foundation received equipment donations from an Ohio resident, and it also raised money to purchase additional gloves from a local sporting goods store.
“These basketballs and the baseball equipment is really a blessing for our students and our school,” Jose Roberto Espinoza Vallejos, a professor at Instituto Nacional de Madriz, said through an interpreter. “We have baseball teams, but the students have to supply their own equipment. It is difficult because baseball equipment is so expensive.” Vallejos explained that the high end of salaries in the Somoto area is about $5 a day, and a low-quality baseball costs about $6. He also said gloves like those donated to the schools would cost more than $100 in the Somoto area.
A man accused of crashing his pickup into an Englewood house last month had his driver’s license revoked for being a habitual traffic offender and was driving without insurance, according to a police report. Dennis Cunningham, 54, of Englewood, received a summons to appear in court for reckless driving, operating an uninsured vehicle and driving after revocation. Cunningham crashed his 1967 Chevrolet truck into a spare bedroom in Kim Guscott’s house, at the corner of West Stanford Avenue and South Delaware street, the afternoon of Feb. 21, police say. A motorist who witnessed the collision said that Cunningham, driving west on Stanford, ran the stop sign, nearly hitting the witness’s vehicle before swerving, hitting the curb and crashing into the house.
