Taking faith to the streets ‘Ashes on the Go’ helps those who can’t attend services
By Shanna Fortier sfortier@coloradocommunitymedia.com Jose Chavez walked out of the Castle Cafe at Fourth and Wilcox streets in downtown Castle Rock around 4:30 p.m. on Ash Wednesday. Still wearing his apron and hair net, he walked across the street to where the Rev. Brian Winter, the Rev. Janet Fullmer and retired clergy Herald Warren and Tom Miles stood as they gave the Imposition of Ashes. Chavez stood in silence as Winter prayed over him and then spread ashes in the form of a cross on his forehead. Then, Chavez walked back to the restaurant and resumed his place working in the kitchen. “That’s what it’s all about,” said Winter, the pastor at Christ’s Episcopal Church in Castle Rock. “Those moments where we can touch people that might not be able to attend services to receive ashes.” For some Christian denominations, Ash Wednesday is the start of the 40 days of Lent, a time of preparation for Easter Sunday, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. Many people either give up something — to symbolize sacrifice — during those 40 days or, as is occurring
Douglas County School Board President Meghann Silverthorn is one of four Republican candidates for the state Senate seat in District 4. She will be vying with Benjamin Lyng, Jim Smallwood and Jess Loban for the Senate seat that has been occupied by Mark Scheffel, R-Parker, for the past eight years. Scheffel is leaving because of term limits. The district includes Castle Rock, Parker, Franktown, Larkspur and Castle Pines. No Democrats or third-party candidates have filed paperwork to run for the seat. Here is a brief look at the four candidates: • Loban, of Castle Rock, is a veteran of the Air Force and a small business owner. He has patents in the logistics and engineering fields. “The reason that I’m running for (state Senate) is for my children and for the fact that I have watched Colorado slip so far to the left over my lifetime here,” Loban said. “I want to ensure that my children have the security and the values that I was afforded growing up here. Douglas County must produce a dedicated conservative, who is committed to restoring the foundation of Colorado back towards our original family values with a strong faith in God. I believe that I am the best choice to do this.” • Lyng, of Castle Rock, is a former Army officer and now works in the banking inElection continues on Page 13

more frequently now, they take on new disciplines to help them grow closer to God, Winter said. Receiving ashes, he said, is a way to start the disciplines of Lent. But Winter recognized that not
everyone who wants to receive ashes can attend services. So he teamed with Fullmer, of St. Philip In the Field Episcopal Church in Sedalia, to offer Ashes on
