SPORTS Golden beats Prairie View
BY STEVE SMITH SSMITH@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Golden High School built too big a lead for Prairie View in the opening round of the first Nate Howard Memorial Basketball tournament at PVHS Dec. 2. The Demons shaded the ThunderHawks 41-33. GHS led by as much as 16 points early in the fourth quarter. The ThunderHawks cut the lead in half – largely on free throws – before Golden prevailed. Anna Kennedy led the Demons with 10 points. Kempley Wellman and Madison Bates added nine. Briana Robles led the ThunderHawks with 12 points, including a 3-pointer. Hannah DeShazer scored five. “We are so new right now,” said PVHS coach Sam Mackall. “We have a lot of players from last year who are underclassmen. Right now, it’s a matter of trying to mesh them together. We had the opportunities. We were in the game. The percentage was way low, and missing 19 free throws doesn’t help. It was really bad.”
PVHS had its shots. “Almost every possession, we had a look or a good look,” Mackall said. “We just didn’t convert. It comes down to finding a range and knowing our limitation. I don’t know if it’s rushing a shot. It’s the newness of the team. We don’t have the same five as last year. We only have two returners. Right now, it’s going to be some bugs.” PVHS won its first game of the season, a 34-24 win over future Front Range League opponent Mountain Range. “We’re so young, we don’t know strengths and weaknesses yet,” Mackall said. “I’m happy with our defensive play the last game (against MRHS). It wasn’t too bad this game when we started digging down and doing what we needed to do. Offensively, I’m happy. We got shots up. It’s more of a mental block right now.” PVHS closed out the Nate Howard tournament with a 33-30 loss to Poudre High School Dec. 4. PVHS has the rest of this week off. The ThunderHawks host Legend High School at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16. “I liked that we got a lot of shots up,” Mackall said. “I like how

we played the defense. We more than doubled them in the fourth quarter. We were right there. We
couldn’t get over the hump. To be fouled so much and not convert, that’ll take it out of any team.”
Riverdale Ridge’s Holliday has sights set on all-star football game BY STEVE SMITH SSMITH@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Holiday shopping in Dallas, Texas. Chances are it has a nice ring for Riverdale Ridge football player RJ Holliday. The Ravens’ senior was among almost 300 players chosen for the BlueGrey All-American Bowl Monday, Dec. 20, at Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium. “I’m not sure about the whole nomination process,” Holliday said. “I was sent a letter from the BlueGrey All-American Bowl national
director, Gus Bell, informing me I had been nominated ‘based on excellent football performance at the highschool level.’” That led to an evaluation on film and other sources as part of the selection process. Holliday is a twotime, all-conference selection, a threetime selection to the state’s academic all-state team and an honorable-mention all-league honoree. This season, Holliday caught 37 passes for 767 yards and 10 touchdowns. A few weeks later, he got the news. “I think it was after football practice when I came home. Mom and

Dad told me the news that I had been selected and gotten a formal invite in the mail,” Holliday said. “It is an honor to be selected for any of these experiences.” In nine games this season, Holliday racked up 21 solo tackles and 30 total tackles. He also intercepted four passes and had deflected eight passes. “I think it will be a great experience and opportunity to learn more about my craft at the CB position while playing under different coaches and with different teammates,” Holliday said. “It is
always good to meet new people and do new things. You can always learn things from other players to improve your game on the field. This is just another opportunity to do that for me.” Holliday is in the midst of the college football recruiting process. He recently took a tour of the campus at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., an NCAA Division II program. “I am excited for the opportunity and look forward to representing Riverdale Ridge and Colorado football,” Holliday said.
