Ballot issue would let state keep extra tobacco funds

Colorado voters approved a ballot measure in 2020 increasing taxes on tobacco and nicotine products and letting the state use the revenue to fund a universal preschool program.

But the increased taxes generated more money than expected to the tune of about $24 million. So the legislature passed a bill asking voters this year through Proposition II to let the state keep that extra money — as well as all future revenue from the taxes — and use it to expand the preschool program.

If voters reject Proposition II, the tax revenue collected above what was projected will be returned to nicotine and tobacco wholesalers and distributors. Additionally, the nicotine and tobacco tax rates will be cut to prevent future excess revenue.

Brighton artists honored by Arts Commission

What began 40 years ago as a Brighton-area stringed instrument group has been honored by the Brighton Cultural Arts Commission.

The Brighton Music Choir and Orchestra received the Master of Performing Arts award.

It’s a category for artists who are who are filmmakers, dancers, actors, actresses, directors, or musicians.

The arts commission celebrated that group and several other area artists at an Oct. 18 ceremony at Brighton’s Eagle View Adult Center.

Joining the choir and orchestra in receiving honors at the ceremony were artists Jan Hepp-Struck, Kathy and Ed Hansen, Judd Farner, Elena Guerrero Townsend, MJ McCafferty, and Sue Corbett The original orchestra began in the 1980s as a group of adult string musicians called “String Colors’. The String Colors became so successful other groups wanted to join them.

Eventually, the group coalesced under the direction of Kat McCusker in 1987, with about 30 musicians.

Today, the chorus and orchestra perform four concerts yearly.

“I’m pleased that we have been able to serve the community musically for these many years! I have been conducting the group since 1987,” McCusker said via email.

The group has been more than just performing group but has become a founding area for other area musicans. Groups such as BrightonJazz, Thrillseekers and Brighton Brass were formed out of the Brigh-

ton Music Orchestra.

Deanna Marcy is the director of the Brighton Music Choir, one of those groups. It started as a community church choir in Brighton performing Christmas concerts in 1997 by Bonnie Simcox and Marlys Harp.

“We are so very honored to have been nominated and chosen for this award,” Marcy said.

Marcy has been a teacher for over 40 years, teaching middle school Spanish one and two and teaching high school geography and personal finance at The Summit Academy in Westminster, and continues to pursue music with the chorus as a hobby.

“One of the biggest honors for me and the choir was when asked to sing for the program when the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling Wall came to Brighton in August 2021,” Marcy said. “We’ve also had the opportunity to participate in caroling at the Adams County Historical Christmas night and at the City of Brighton Festival of Lights.”

Photographer Jan Hepp-Struck received the Master of Visual Arts, a category for artists who are photographers, painters, potters, sculptors, and jewelry designers.

and anything unique or interesting.”

Hepp-Struck is in real estate and has a passion for photography since she picked up a Polaroid camera in high school.

“The ability to capture the beauty of something with the push of a button and watch it appear almost instantly sparked an interest since then I blossomed,” Struck said.

Amanda Griffin, a local writer, submitted the Hepp-Struck nomination.

“Jan considers herself a hobby photographer, and it’s neither a reflection of her skill nor her natural eye for composition and beauty,” Griffin said.

“At last year’s Excellence in Arts ceremony, copies of one of Jan’s photographs were given to our honorees in 2011,” Griffin said.

Hepp-Struck experienced a lifechanging sight loss scare when she was diagnosed with a progressive disease that attacks the cornea, but was fortunate enough to get a transplant.

“The transplant surgeries were successful, the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank asked me to participate in their annual Circle of Light Photo Project. With the sales proceeds, it was donated towards research on vision loss,” she said.

Brighton, and Westminster, volunteering for the Paletteers Art Group as the vice president and secretary, setting up art shows in Brighton, Westminster at Front Range Community College and the Adams County Fair.

Ed Hanson has won numerous local and out-of-state awards and teaching classes at Main Street Gallery, and his work is displayed at the gallery.

“It was a total surprise to us. We were not aware we had been to the ceremony before, but we didn’t ever expect to have our names on the board there,” Ed Hanson said.

“We were very honored and we do a lot of volunteer work, but we don’t expect to be recognized,” Kathy Hanson said.

Theater for the next generation

Judd Farner received a Master of Cultural Arts in Education award from the arts commission that recognizes him.

“Having grown up in Brighton, it has been the great honor of my life to get to give back to the community that gave so much to me. An award like this amplifies the value of fostering community members who contribute,” Farner said. “ I am proud to be a part of building artistic merit in my community while providing students the opportunities to develop themselves into strong and invested citizens.”

Farner is the theater arts teacher at Riverdale Ridge High School in Thornton, where he started the program six years ago.

Farner said about 60 of the students have participated in more than 14 productions.

Pacing population part of Brighton sales tax question Chief Domenico has plans if voters approve 15 cent tax on $100 sales

Brighton Police Chief Matt Domenico knows what he’ll do if voters approve ballot question 3F, a new 15 cent sales tax, at the polls next month.

“Brighton is kind of a unique community, we are surrounded by interstate highways, along with really high volume going through the middle of town,” Domenico said. “Traffic and roadway safety are a huge concern for concern for residents.

Funding additional traffic safety positions would be definitely one of our goals. Additional detectives both in our general detective division along with task forces would be as well. And then providing a team that can be quickly deployed to deal with new issues we are dealing with.”

He’s not so sure what he’ll do if the tax fails.

“I have certainly had conversations with the city manager and other city leadership about what the what the consequences of that would be,” he said. “How do we prioritize services and make sure that we’re providing the best? I think there is a commitment to continue to be creative and innovative. I mean, it’s not going to shut us down. But it would put a real challenge on us to provide a level of

service that our communities demand.”

Based on polling the city did in the spring, Domenico said he’s confident his department is on the right Domenico track.

“I think what we learned from that is that the city is supportive of the work the police department is doing and that many of the likely voters would be willing to absorb some additional sales tax to ensure the police department is funded at the level it should be,” Domenico said.

15 cents on $100

Councilors agreed in August to put a proposed sales tax on the Nov. 7 ballot. If voters approve, the city will begin collecting 15 cents on $100 spent in the city limits in 2024.

That money will be set aside for the police department, allowing them to two hire 12 new department employees — most of them sworn officers.

“We’re dealing with huge increases in auto theft, as many agencies are,” Domenico said. “Vehicle trespasses are up, too. So having a dedicated team of officers that can go out and work in partnership with the businesses, the residents, the neighborhood groups that are reporting those quality of life issues.”

The city began looking for ways to increase the department’s budget last year, considering two plans to raise the $2 million - a sales tax or a property tax.

The City Council convened an outreach group to poll residents at city events in April and May and settled on the sales tax.

The ballot measure would ask voters to approve a 0.15% sales tax increase, which would cost consumers 15 cents on a $100 purchase.

The tax would begin in 2024 if voters agree in November.

The increase would boost Brighton’s sales tax rate to 8.65% in the Adams County portions of Brighton and 7.9% in the Weld County portion.

Retail buyers in Brighton currently pay 2.9% sales tax to the state, 1.1% to special districts and 3.75% to the city for general operations, capital projects and parks. Adams County collects an additional 0.75% for the portion of Brighton in Adams Coun-

ty.

Shops in Prairie Center pay an additional 2.25% to the Prairie Center Metropolitan District.

Population, technological drivers

The new tax would generate between $2 million and $2.75 million depending on the overall economy and retail sales in the city. Domenico said current estimates predict it will generate roughly $2.25 million.

That money is necessary to help the department keep pace with Brighton’s population. Right now, the city has 1.8 officers for each 1,000 Brighton residents, he told councilors earlier in the year. The Front Range average is about 2.5 officers per 1,000 residents.

Broken rail likely caused Pueblo train derailment

A broken rail likely caused a train hauling 124 cars of coal to derail on a bridge over Interstate 25 north of Pueblo, killing a semi truck driver, federal investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board said.

The board’s preliminary assessment determined that the bridge collapsed after the train derailed on Oct. 15, sending coal and mangled train cars across I-25 and closing the busy route between Pueblo and Colorado Springs. As many as 30 train cars derailed.

Investigators were at the scene in the aftermath, trying to figure out what caused the broken rail and why warning systems did not alert crews, the NTSB said.

Federal investigators will also look at the adequacy of prior track inspections and the condition and

maintenance history of the bridge.

The federal agency will release its preliminary report within 30 days.

A final report could take up to two years to be completed.

The broken rail was east of the bridge over I-25, the NTSB said.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-25 remained closed in the days after the crash as crews continued to clear debris from the road. BNSF expects cleanup to be completed by Wednesday, when CDOT engineers and maintenance crews will assess the damage and determine what repairs are needed to reopen the highway.

Drivers headed south are advised to use Colorado 115 until they reach Penrose, before heading east on U.S. 50 toward Pueblo.

Northbound drivers can exit the interstate at U.S. 50 and go west, toward Pueblo West, then north on Purcell until they reach I-25,

CDOT said.

There still remains confusion over who owns the bridge that collapsed and who was responsible for maintaining it. A spokesperson for BNSF, which operated the train that derailed and owns the line it runs on, told The Colorado Sun the state owns the bridge.

But Matt Inzeao, communications director for the Colorado Department of Transportation, said state officials are still combing through documents, going back to the bridge’s construction in the late 50s, to determine who owns it.

“We have been working through some conflicting information thus far,” Inzeo said in an email. “We do not have access to the maintenance and inspection activity performed by BNSF for this bridge.”

Generally, CDOT’s inspection and maintenance focuses on bridges carrying cars and trucks “and only deals with railroad and

utility bridges as needed,” Inzeo said.

It’s also unclear where the train was headed.

An Xcel Energy spokesperson said the coal was not en route to the Comanche power plant in Pueblo and will not affect the plant’s operations.

The Pueblo County Coroner’s Office identified the truck driver killed in the derailment as Lafollette Henderson, 60, of Compton, Calif.

None of the train’s crew were injured.

New positions could include task force detectives dedicated to addressing specific crimes such as motor vehicle theft, sexual assault, and other felonies. It would also let the department add addi-

tional patrol, traffic, and investigations officers and would let the city create an Impact Team that would be able to quickly respond to crime issues.

It would include professional staff to aid investigations, too.

“We’ve implemented things like investigative technicians in our Detective Division,” Domenico said. “Investigative technicians can do much of the same work

that a police officer can do but they’re not a sworn staff member.

They can’t make an arrest and they can’t go out and file charges with the District Attorney’s Office but they can do a lot of the legwork, which frees our detectives up to have more time to do what they need. And we continue to look for creative ways to make sure that we have the personnel and the resources we need.”

Ballot boxes and voter services in Adams and Weld counties STAFF REPORT

While most Colorado ballots will be delivered by mail or dropped into ballot boxes, poll workers in Adams and Weld counties will host voter service and polling Center locations throughout the area.

Voters who want to send their ballots by mail should put 55 cents in postage on the envelope. All ballots must be in the county’s possession by 7 p.m. Nov. 7, meaning they should be placed in the mail several days before in order to be counted.

Ballots cast by military and overseas voters must be sent no later than 7 p.m. Nov. 7 and received by the close of business on the 8th day after the election, Nov. 15.

Adams County residents can bring their completed ballots to one of Ad-

ams County’s 28 dropbox locations.

Supporters contend that higher taxes on tobacco and nicotine products discourage their use. They also argue that increasing funding for Colorado’s universal preschool program will improve educational and health outcomes for the kids who benefit from the instructions.

Preschool for All Coloradans, the issue committee supporting Proposition II, had raised more than $291,000 through late September and spent only about $34,000. The top donors to the group are Healthier Colorado at $90,000, Save the Children Action Network at $86,000 and Gary Advocacy at $50,000. Healthier Colorado and Save the Children Action Network are nonprofits, while Gary Advocacy is a philanthropic limited liability company affiliated with nonprofit Gary Community Ventures.

“We’ve got a huge coalition of supporters and want to make sure everyone in Colorado understands that voting yes on Prop. II will increase access to early childhood education without raising taxes,” said Craig Hughes, a partner at Hilltop Public Solutions, the political firm that is managing the Preschool for All Coloradans campaign.

How did Proposition II get on the ballot?

If voters reject the ballot measure, the state will have to return nearly $24 million to cigarette and nicotine wholesalers and distributors through direct refunds and temporary tax breaks.

The state would also cut nicotine and tobacco taxes by 11.53% to avoid collecting excess taxes in the future.

For context: The taxes on a pack of cigarettes under Proposition HH are currently $1.94 and set to increase to $2.64 on July 1, 2027. The tax on other tobacco and nicotine products is currently 50% and set to rise to 62% starting in July 2027.

The Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, a constitutional amendment approved by voters in 1992, requires that money collected in excess of a tax’s projected revenue be refunded unless voters let the government keep the money.

The increased tobacco and nicotine taxes were approved in 2020 through Proposition EE, which was placed on the ballot by Democrats in the legislature. The measure, which got the support of 68% of voters, gradually increases tobacco and nicotine taxes through 2027.

When the initiative was drafted, nonpartisan legislative staff predicted the increased taxes would generate $186.5 million in new revenue a year. But the revenue has been much higher than that — at around $208 million — which is why Proposition II was placed on the November 2023 ballot.

A similar situation played out after Coloradans legalized the sale and possession of recreational marijuana in 2012. In 2015, voters approved Proposition BB, which let the state keep recreational marijuana sales tax revenue collected above what was estimated and use the money predominantly for school construction.

What exactly will happen if Proposition II fails?

“I had to signal my dislike for tax structures of these kinds,” Vigil said.

“I pledged this to my constituency, especially my libertarian constituents, that I’m not supportive of higher taxes on tobacco products — sin taxes. I find them rather regressive and not particularly helpful in encouraging people to quit smoking.”

But Vigil, who quit smoking eight years ago, said she’ll still vote for Proposition II.

The City of Brighton has opened its third annual Name that Snowplow contest! Elementary school students who reside in Brighton are invited to submit their best and most creative name ideas for the City’s nine snowplows for the 2023-2024 snow season.

Bears for Kids at Eagle View

Brighton’s Eagle View Adult Center, at 1150 Prairie Center Pkwy., is working with the Child Rescue Foundation to help the youngest victims of domestic violence or homelessness.

The center is collecting stuffed teddy bears that will be given to metro area children in crisis. The foundation distributed more than 10,000 bears in 2022. Eagle View donated 161 of those bears.

The Eagle View Center will collect new stuffed bears or other stuffed animals from October 2 through November 7. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Rocky Mountain Human Services wins Adams, Denver counties contract

The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy & Financing is redesigning its case management process, naming a Colorado firm to manage responses for Adams and Denver counties beginning November 1.

Colorado nonprofit group Rocky Mountain Human Services will provide streamlined case management services to individuals with disabilities or other complex needs requiring long-term, home, and communitybased support.

The new contract is part of Colorado’s redesigned case management system intended to make it easier for people needing services to navigate the system and get the care they need. It is designed to ensure that people have one place to go for questions and support and to improve the quality of care they receive.

VOICES Hope and encouragement

H

ope may not be a strategy, but it certainly

is a catalyst for change.

Over the past few weeks in this column, I have tackled topics such as the importance of having a healthy selfimage, developing and maintainWINNING ing a positive attitude, and how WORDS to build winning relationships at home and at work. This week I want to share a message about the role that hope plays in our lives, especially during times of change.

Hope cannot be our strategy as we simply cannot hope our way through a challenge or difficult season of life. However, hope that spark, that tactic, and a Michael Norton is catalyst for successful change or achieving a positive result or outcome. Everyone reading this column has hope for something, happy and healthy children and grandchildren, an enjoyable retirement, a new job opportunity, a new relationship, peace, joy, to end the violence in the world, to end world hunger, and so many other things in life that our hope-filled heart desires.

When hope arises, opportunity is born. It’s looking at life through the lens of hope instead of hopelessness. The hopeless person struggles to get out of bed, where the hopeful person greets each day with an excited outlook, looking forward to all that the day could be. Hope is light, whether it is the tiniest of light that we see in the distance, or the brightest light we see in a cloudless blue sky.

There is another word that when coupled with hope creates even greater positive energy, and that word is encouragement. Hope and encouragement are force multipliers when used in conjunction with one another. When hope is born in one person and someone else is there to fan the fire of hope through sincere encouragement it makes all the difference in the world. Think back to a time where you had hope for something and a family member, friend, or coworker offered you sincere encouragement, how did that make you feel?

Hope is a powerful force that can uplift and inspire us even in the darkest of times. When faced with challenges, hope gives us the strength to persevere. Though hope alone is not enough to overcome obstacles, combining hope with thoughtful strategy and diligent effort can lead to incredible results.

In our personal lives, maintaining hope is

crucial for emotional well-being. When going through tough situations like illness, loss of a job, or relationship struggles, hope helps us see light at the end of the tunnel. It gives us courage to take things one day at a time, believing better days are ahead. Hope reminds us that no matter how bleak things seem now, circumstances can improve.

At work, hope empowers us to envision success and pursue our goals with passion. Whether launching a new project, vying for a promotion, or pushing through a difficult assignment, hope gives us energy and optimism to keep striving.

It fuels our dreams and aspirations. With hope, we’re more resilient in the face of setbacks and criticism. Hope helps us see possibilities rather than obstacles.

Though hope alone cannot guarantee success, it lays the mental groundwork needed to turn vision into reality. Paired with thoughtful planning and bold action, hope takes our ambitions from abstract to concrete. It motivates us to put in the sweat, late nights, and sacrifice required to achieve excellence.

To nurture hope, it’s important to surround ourselves with encouraging, positive people

who believe in us. Their hope lifts us higher. We must also cultivate hope within by regularly visualizing our brightest future, affirming our capabilities, and anticipating triumph over trials.

Another great way to nurture hope is to keep a hope journal, writing down all of your hopes and dreams.

Hope empowers, uplifts, and emboldens us to reach for our highest potential. Though hope itself is not a strategy, it is the foundation for change. With hope, we can live and work with passion, purpose, and perseverance. And Dr. Alfred Adler said it this way, “Hope is the foundational quality of all successful change. No hope, no change.”

Why school board elections matter and why you should vote

Voting for school board members who share your values or perspective makes it more likely schools will run in a way that you think is good for kids and your community. If you don’t vote, you give that power to other people.

In many school district elections, less than a third of eligible voters vote. Sometimes just a few hundred or even a few dozen votes separate the winners and losers.

That means every vote matters.

In Colorado, school districts are run by elected officials who serve on the school board. School boards usually have five to seven members. The main function of a school board is hiring the superintendent, who is like the chief executive of the school district and responsible for day-to-day running of local schools. School board members supervise and evaluate the superintendent.

School board members also vote on the budget and pay raises for

teachers and other staff, and they set policies that control what happens in schools.

A school board might cast the final vote on whether to close a school with low test scores or too few students —or vote to change budget priorities so those schools have more money. Or a school board might vote to adopt a new curriculum if the old one isn’t working well to educate students.

ou could call pumpkins an important

symbol of autumn.

The minute September rolls around, pumpkin appears in every food imaginable from pumpkin-spice lattes to soups to pumpkin cereal. Huge cartons of pumpkins arrive in stores as we prepare for fall holidays.

But what do we know about pumpkins? How long have they been growing? Do they have other uses than decorations and pie? Why are some pumpkins different from the orange pumpkins we carved as children?

Here’s your chance to learn more about the orange — and sometimes white and even teal — gourds.

Bitter beginnings

The pumpkin began as a tiny fruit — yes, pumpkins are fruits — as long as 7,500 to 10,000 years ago in Mexico and Central America, according to Jennifer Ackerfield, head curator of natural history collections at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

The original fruit from the Cucurbita family, which is Latin for gourd, was tiny, hard and round, nothing like today’s pumpkins, and the plants were stinky. Historians hypothesize that the fruits were eaten by woolly mammoths, Ackerfield said, and there were six indigenous species, with one species growing now in the Denver Botanic Gardens’ York Street location.

While the plant was gross, as Ackerfield put it, the seeds were tasty. The hard fruit was

scraped out to use for bowls and cups. Through years of seed cultivation and seed trading, pumpkins became larger and oranger, and then other modifications were bred into them.

Current pumpkins

Halloween pumpkins are specifically bred for size, shape and the pumpkin-wall thickness, so they make better jack-o’-lanterns, according to Eric Hammond, CSU Extension director for Adams County.

“Recently there has been a lot more interest in unique shapes, sizes and textures, even those with warty textures,” Hammond said.

“Interestingly, the funky varieties are old-time varieties. We wouldn’t call them heirloom pumpkins, but it’s in a similar vein.”

He said pumpkins, like many fruits and vegetables, have a wide genetic diversity, and some plant breeders look for that.

“Sometimes they find wild varieties that are attractive, and they cross-breed them to get desirable traits,” Hammond said.

He said nowadays, people are looking for unusual-looking pumpkins, and growers are happy to take advantage of the demand for them.

“Unusual-looking pumpkins have always been there,” he said. “It’s just there wasn’t a demand for them until recently.”

If you want your pumpkins to last a lot longer and you are not carving them into jacko’-lanterns, wipe them with a diluted bleach solution, which kills microbes, and the pumpkins will last a lot longer, Hammond said.

He advised people to compost their pumpkins after they have outlived their decorative purpose rather than throwing them away, so they don’t add to landfill waste.

• The Pumpkin Capital of the World is Morton, Illinois, which is the home of Libby’s pumpkin industry. About 12,300 acres of pumpkins are grown yearly in Illinois, the most of any state, and more than 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins are grown yearly in the United States, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.

• Pumpkins were once considered a remedy for freckles and snakebites, the almanac said, and settlers cut the flesh into strips, dried them and used them to weave mats.

• Native Americans grew and ate pumpkins and their seeds long before the Pilgrims reached North America. Pilgrims learned how to grow and prepare pumpkins from the Native Americans. Pumpkin was most likely served at the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621, the almanac said.

• The earliest pumpkin pie made in America was different from today’s pumpkin pie. Pilgrims and early settlers made pumpkin pie by hollowing out a pumpkin, filling the shell with milk, honey and spices, and baking it, the almanac said.

• Each pumpkin has about 500 seeds, and there are 45 varieties of pumpkins, according to Good Housekeeping magazine.

• The first jack-o’-lanterns weren’t made from pumpkins. Instead, the Irish carved faces in turnips, and Ackerfield called them very scary looking. When Irish immigrants moved to America, they found pumpkins more suitable.

• Christopher Columbus brought pumpkin seeds, along with corn and potatoes, back to Europe, the almanac said.

School boards also have the final say on many contentious issues. If a student is expelled and the family appeals to keep that student in school, or if a teacher is fired and appeals to keep their job, the school board makes the final decision. School boards have voted to opt out of Colorado’s comprehensive sex education standards, to remove police from schools, and to bring police back.

Exactly how school boards operate can vary from district to district. For example, in 2020, school boards in some districts voted on whether to move to online learning, while in others, the superintendent made that decision.

School board members don’t typically get involved in the details of running the district.

That’s the superintendent’s job.

School board members can’t discipline a teacher or principal or directly tell them what to do. They don’t set bus routes or decide which routes to cut if there’s a driver shortage.

School board members don’t directly pick which schools to close.

In most situations, the superintendent will make a recommendation to the school board.

The school board can vote to approve or reject the recommendation or ask for other options.

School board members also can raise awareness about problems and ask for policy changes. If enough board members agree, the superintendent will work on that idea.

Most school board members are elected by the registered voters in that district.

School board members serve staggered

four-year terms. On a five-member board, three of the seats would be up for election one year. Then two years later, the other two seats would open up. The Denver school board has seven members, with four seats open one year and three seats open two years later.

Most school boards have term limits, so members can’t serve more than eight years total.

School boards always have an odd number of members so they don’t end up with a tie — though ties can still happen if someone skips a meeting or abstains from a vote.

Sometimes a school board member quits in the middle of their term. In that case, the other school board members choose someone to finish the term.

Sometimes school districts cancel school board elections because there aren’t enough candidates for a contested vote. That saves some money but means voters don’t have a choice in who runs the schools. Whoever volunteered becomes the school board member.

Some school districts elect school board members at large. That means each school board member represents the entire district, rather than a specific region within it.

If your district elects members at large, you’ll see all the candidates on the ballot and can vote for as many candidates as there are open seats. If there are two open seats, you can vote for two candidates. If there are three open seats, you can vote for three candidates, and so on. The top vote-getters serve on the school board.

Other school districts are divided into geographical regions, and each school board member represents a region. These school board members have to live in that region.

State softball tournament beckons half-dozen northern area schools CCM north proves strong hub for softball powerhouses

If this weekend’s state softball tournaments have a familiar feel to them, it may be because Holy Family, Frederick, Fort Lupton, Riverdale Ridge and Horizon high schools qualified a year ago.

First-round games are set for 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 20, at Aurora Sports Park, East Colfax Avenue and Tower Road. Semifinals and finals are set for Saturday, Oct. 21.

Here’s a breakdown of the northern teams heading into the weekend.

Fort Lupton

Fort Lupton makes its sixth straight appearance in the state 3A tournament. The Bluedevils earned the 11th seed and will tangle with sixth-seeded Thomas Jefferson High School at 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 20.

The Bluedevils advanced to the second round of the state tournament each of the past two seasons. Albert Vasquez took over the program in 2013, Since then, his teams have finished at .500 or better in every season except two.

Fort Lupton takes an 18-6-1 mark into this year’s tournament.

Vasquez called it “a tough year.”

“It was a struggle trying to have them understand what we were trying to accomplish,” Vasquez said. “We kept preaching teamwork. We started coming together after the Brush tournament (in September). We played well that

nior shortstop Avery Salisbury hit at a .434 clip this fall. One-third of her 33 base hits went for extra bases. Payton Torres took care of most of the pitching duties. She struck out 74 batters in 110 innings on the mound and had an earned-run average of 3.35. Elayna Fisher struck out 21 batters in her 33 innings of work.

The only coach the Golden Eagles have ever had, Roger Dufour, won his 400th career game earlier this season. The Golden Eagles were second in the class 4A Longs Peak League.

Holy Family

The Tigers (24-1) finished second a season ago. This year, they drew the No. 1 seed in class 4A

and will face Pine Creek in the opening round. Game time is 10 a.m. on Oct. 20.

Kaylee McDonald, a senior, leads the hitting effort with a .519 batting average this season. She has as many hits (40) as RBIs. Thirteen of her base hits are for extra bases. Junior Jaelyn Sandoval compiled a .486 batting average this fall. Nine of her 34 hits this season are for extra bases. Another junior, Isabella Arroyo, has a 0.96 earned-run average. In 86 innings of work, Arroyo allowed 11 earned runs and struck out 93 batters.

Holy Family’s only loss was to class 5A Chatfield High School in extra innings.

Horizon

For the Hawks of Horizon, it’s their fourth straight appearance at state. The third-seeded Hawks (21-4) take on Fossil Ridge in the

first round. First pitch is at 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 20.

Lily Mohr, a senior, hit .582 for the Hawks this season and also led the squad in home runs with 11. Hadley Hudson’s batting average was .512. Twenty-one of her 43 hits were good for extra bases.

Senior pitcher Madison Vollmar’s earned-run average was 2.48 in just over 53 innings of work. She recorded 59 strikeouts. Hudson piled up 72 strikeouts in her 55 innings on the mound. Her earnedrun average was 3.18.

Horizon finished second in the Front Range League this season.

The Hawks advanced as far as the state 5A semifinals in 2021.

Riverdale Ridge

The Ravens (23-2) earned their best seed – second – in school history this year. Riverdale Ridge takes on 15th-seeded Roosevelt at 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 20. This marks

the Ravens’ fifth straight appearance at state. The school has fielded a softball team for six seasons.

Infielder Peyton Saenz tops the hitting effort with a .597 average.

The freshman pounded out 43 hits this fall, 20 of which went for extra bases. Mady Ortiz hit at a .487 clip and drove in 32 runs. Brynn Trujiollo had an earned-run average of 1.65 over 55 ⅔ innings of work.

She struck out 89 batters.

Riverdale Ridge, which went through the class 4A Longs Peak League season without a loss, advanced to the state semifinals in 2021. Coach Ray Garza, the only Ravens’ coach in the history of the program, won his 100th game at the helm earlier this season.

Colorado ultra athletes changing conversation about fastest times

When cycling pro Lachlan Morton clipped into the pedals of his pack-saddled Cannondale on Aug. 29 at the starting line of the Tour Divide in Banff, Canada, he was on a mission.

Twelve days, 12 hours and 21 minutes later he rolled into Antelope Wells, New Mexico, with the fastest time ever for the 2,670-mile Tour Divide route that climbs 192,000 vertical feet across the spine of the Rockies.

Morton completed the route nearly a day and a half faster than the record set in 2016, but his journey will not be recorded as the fastest known time, or FKT. That’s because

Morton was chased by a film crew, which was making a movie of his blistering traverse of the Continental Divide. Those camera operators are a violation of the Tour Divide’s self-sufficiency ethic, even though they did not assist in any way.

Morton knew that when he started. His mission was bigger than glory and accolades.

“Look, I’ve won bike races before and it’s a great feeling but it’s pretty fleeting,” said the 31-year-old cycling champion who has turned his prowess in road biking toward long-distance endurance pedaling.

care about that at all, but I don’t care about it more than sharing my story with more people. The role of a professional athlete is to inspire people to participate and get involved. That should be every athlete’s goal when they are considering a challenge or trying to win something.”

The fastest known time phenomenon exploded during the pandemic as countless athletes quietly converted just about every trail, climb and hike in the mountains into race routes. Morton’s disregard for the hallowed FKT mirrors the recent effort by Boulder adventurer Erin Ton. In July, the 25-year-old Ton climbed 57 of Colorado’s highest peaks in an extraordinarily hasty 14 days, 10 hours, claiming a solo, selfsupported speed record that will be

officially logged as a DNF because she skipped a privately owned peak due to “considerable moral issues” with the owners of the Cielo Vista Ranch.

Could record-setting athletic feats by athletes like Morton, an Aussie who lives in Boulder, and Ton diminish the FKT trend, which was born more than two decades ago as a way to herald often-overlooked athleticism?

Nope, said Buzz Burrell, the legendary endurance athlete who, alongside adventure running partner Peter Bakwin, forged the realm of fastest known times in the late 1990s and launched a website as an online trophy shelf for speedy runners and mountaineers.

Running a race on a track is blackand-white with an obvious winner.

Move that race into wild lands and countless options can influence the results, Burrell said.

“We established guidelines so there would be a level and equal

playing field and everyone can know where they stand,” Burrell said. “And because Mother Nature is complex and ever-changing, there will be nuances within that framework. That’s the way it goes.

So if someone breaks the rules, 99% of the time there is no asterisk.

There is just no FKT. The problem is social media, which announces something before verification can take place, so it seems like a done deal.”

Burrell sold his fastestknowntime.com website to Outside Inc. last year, with 5,738 routes across the world for runners and mountain climbers to log their speediest times. The website includes 202 routes in Colorado where athletes can race far from pavement or spectators.

In 2019, renowned cyclist Lael Wilcox vied to become the first woman to win the Tour Divide.

The acclaimed endurance athlete — she set the women’s record for

the route in 2015 and was the first woman to finish in 2023 after riding 3,000 miles from her home in Arizona to the start in Banff — enlisted a film crew in her 2019 effort. Even though she dropped from the race, that film crew sparked ire from some racers who argued that media teams violated the race’s requirement that all competitors remain self-supported.

Tour Divide veteran Jay Petervary took the position that the film crews “can inject undue moral hazard into the equation” serving as “a security blanket for a rider on the edge and thus poses artificial psychological uplift.”

By the 2022 race, the rules included a note that “while not yet published” the race director had decided that individual film crews are not allowed to follow athletes.

travel to the route.

Morton set out from Banff with a plan to break the speed record. He also wanted to prove a new strategy for peak speed.

Eschewing seemingly mandatory drowsiness on the route, Morton planned to sleep 12 hours for every 48 hours on the trail, or around six hours a night.

“I think one of the big barriers to attempting fast ultra-type events is people not wanting to deal with sleep deprivation and they think they cannot be competitive without enduring that,” Morton said. “I wanted to show that you can do these events safely and competitively with sleep.”

Morton has no animosity to-

ward race organizers who will keep late endurance cyclist Mike Hall at the top of the Tour Divide record list for his 2016 race time of 13 days, 22 hours and 51 minutes.

He doesn’t think his speedy time will remain unchallenged for long.

“I think having set a time that was quite a bit quicker, I think next year you will see people go quicker,” Morton said. “That’s my small contribution.”

Aside from speed and proving his sleep strategy, Morton said his Tour Divide race was a highlight of his life in the saddle.

There were long stretches between towns where he could resupply with food. A couple times, he said, he wanted to quit “but sometimes the easiest thing to do is keep moving.”

“It definitely tested me a number of times,” he said. “But

you get in a pretty special head space when you are focused for that period of time. Your needs become pretty simple: Pedal as much as you can. Get food. Get sleep. And repeat. It’s as simple as life can get even though it’s about as difficult an experience one can have.”

Morton said he’d like to pedal the route again. But slower.

Much slower.

“To really experience the route you probably need five, six weeks,” he said. “There are so many wonderful little towns.

So many really supportive, warm people on the route.”

Section 2. The Property is hereby rezoned R-1A, R-1B, R-3, and O as more particularly set forth in Exhibit A and as the Bromley Farms Zoning Map Amendment as generally shown in Exhibit B. Section 3. The City Zoning Map shall be amended to reflect the above change.

Section 4. As provided in City Charter Section 5.9(A), this Ordinance either as presented or as amended, shall be published in full as it was adopted prior to taking final action. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect for five days after its final publication, as provided in City Charter Section 5.8, except as set forth herein.

(hereafter “United Power” or “the cooperative”), will make a final attempt to pay the unclaimed retirements of capital credits to its former members who were served by the cooperative prior to and through December 31, 2019. notice does not apply to current United Power members. Representatives for the estates of deceased former members may also apply for unclaimed retired capital credits on behalf of the former member. Former members, or their representatives, who may be eligible to receive these unclaimed retired capital credits can access a list of eligible accounts at the cooperative’s website at www.unitedpower.com, or in person at United Power’s headquarters office located at 500 Cooperative Way in Brighton, Colorado.

Former members or their representatives who may be eligible to receive a payment of unclaimed retired capital credits must complete and submit an Unclaimed Retired Capital Credits Refund Request form (available at www.unitedpower. com) and verify all necessary information to ensure their eligibility for payment. A copy of the Unclaimed Retired Capital Credits Refund Request form may also be requested by emailing capitalcredits@unitedpower.com or by calling United Power’s Member Services line at 303-637-1300.

Submitting an Unclaimed Retired Capital Credits Refund Request form does not guarantee a disbursement will be made; proper documentation and valid proof of membership during the applicable time period is required. No refund checks will be issued for unclaimed retirement amounts below $5.00. Unclaimed retired capital credit refunds can be donated to the United Power Round Up Foundation, which provides assistance to community organizations within the cooperative’s service territory. In some school districts, only voters who also live in that region get to vote in those school board races. If that’s the case in your district, you’ll see just the candidates for your area on the ballot. You can vote for one candidate, and the top vote-getter will represent that region.

In other school districts, such as Jeffco and Adams 12, school board members have to live in a certain region, but they have to win election districtwide. Every voter in the school district sees multiple school board races on their ballot, and they’ll choose one candidate for each race.

Most Colorado school board

members are unpaid volunteers.

State law allows school board members to be paid up to $150 a day for official business, and a few school boards, such as Denver and Sheridan, have decided to pay members small stipends.

A school board that wants to pay its members has to hold a public meeting on the idea and then vote on the pay package. Compensation doesn’t go into effect, though, until after the next election. Current board members can’t vote to pay themselves and would only get paid if they win re-election.

News organizations like Chalkbeat write about many school board elections.

Colorado Community Media’s newspapers for two dozen communities around the Denver area has information about candidates. You

can check your school district website. Search for the words “school board” or “board meetings” or “election.” Many school districts list who is running and the dates and times of local candidate forums.

Community groups like the League of Women Voters and educational nonprofits often host forums or panels where you can hear from the candidates in their own words or even ask them questions. You can also check out candidate websites and see how candidates describe themselves and talk about their priorities.

Read about the candidates or watch how they answer questions.

Think about how their views compare with yours or how their life experience might have prepared them. What connection do they have to local schools? What kinds of

work have they done?

At the same time, be aware that school board candidates —like all politicians —sometimes use words that sound good to everyone but can mean different things to different people. If a candidate talks about strong neighborhood schools, listening to parents, or supporting teachers, look for more information about what they mean.

Colorado school board elections take place in odd-numbered years on the first Tuesday in November.

The next election is Nov. 7, 2023. If you’re already a registered voter, look for your ballot in the mail the week of Oct. 16. If you’re not a registered voter, you can find more information about voting here.
