INTRODUCED BY: Padilla AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BRIGHTON, COLORADO, REPEALING ORDINANCE NO. 2257 AND REPEALING AND RE-ENACTING BRIGHTON MUNICIPAL CODE SECTION 1-16-10 REGARDING WARDS AND PRECINCTS WHEREAS, the City Council of Brighton, Colorado has hired an independent consultant to review existing wards and recommend boundary changes after the most recent census to comport with constitutional requirements, including but not limited to, the requirement that the largest ward and the smallest do not deviate in population by more than five percent; and WHEREAS, Section 3.4 of the Brighton Municipal Charter requires that the City be divided into four wards that may be changed only by ordinance and that must conform to constitutional apportionment requirements; and WHEREAS, Ordinance No. 2257 was passed May 16, 2017 and since that time the population of each ward has changed as reflected by the most recent census with Ward 1 having a population of 10,965, Ward 2 a population of 10,515, Ward 3 a population of 9,368, and Ward 4 a population of 9,239; and WHEREAS, wards should be drawn as equal in population as possible while keeping communities of interest together where possible, and the consultant proposes new ward boundaries that maintain a less than five percent deviation between the largest and the smallest ward; and WHEREAS, the City Council hereby adopts the new ward boundaries to comport with constitutional requirements and the City Charter.
