Wrestling standout ready for new challenges Former Skyview wrestler, Brighton HS student Jaslynn Gallegos aims to change colleges BY STEVE SMITH SSMITH@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Jasylnn Gallegos was one of the first high-school girl wrestlers in Colorado to stand on the awards podium. The former Brighton High School student competed for Skyview High School at the time.
She went 14-3 during the justcompleted season at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, including a championship in the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championship Southeast Regional tournament. But she won’t be back to defend her title next season. After a three-year stay at Presbyterian, she entered the NCAA transfer portal to find a new school. “I felt a change could create more opportunities for me,” she said. “Overall, it was a great experience. I made a few friendships that I am sure will last a lifetime.”
Gallegos got into the portal before she made the announcement on social media. “I was in the portal yesterday morning (April 12), and before I made the announcement on social media, I had been contacted by four colleges, which all had placed in the top six at the NCAA national tournament this past year,” she said. “Since my announcement, I have been contacted by a few other schools as well.” Gallegos has two more years of eligibility, one of which is the result of an NCAA extension because of COVID-19. She hopes to have a new school in place before
the fall semester begins. “I do plan on doing a fifth year,” Gallegos said. “I don’t have an idea location. I am open to whichever schools are able to offer the best opportunities for my academic and athletic aspirations.” Gallegos finished fourth at the state meet in 2019. She’s majoring in psychology and may pursue a master’s degree in either clinical or sports psychology. “The goal is to find a career I can help kids and teens who need a little extra help,” she said. “This was a big decision, but I believe it’s the next step in achieving my goals.”
