Looking back at Jeffco in 2015

Over the past year, Arvada thrived as the city saw many major developments. From continued construction on the Gold Line, to the creation of two new schools and a little heat in the race for city council, 2015 saw them all. Here are our top 10 stories of the year in no particular order.

Jefferson County produced some forward-looking news in 2015, deciding on ways to improve the county fair and approving a tax increase to support the library. As the news continues into the New Year, here are some of the hot topics that began in 2015.

Scenes like this — classes of 35 to 36 sixth-graders fit snugly, four to a table, inside temporary buildings — have become a common site at West Woods and Meiklejohn elementary schools in Arvada where student populations officially passed the 100 percent capacity mark this year. Gold Line approaching the station Construction on the Gold Line Commuter Rail Stations continued in 2015. Arvada’s three sites — the Sheridan Strike Station, the Olde Town Transit Hub and the Arvada Ridge Station — all are in the middle of construction and are expected to finish in 2016. Overhead wires have been powered up and soon trains will begin to be tested up and down the line. The Olde Town Transit Hub parking garage is under construction and it, too, is scheduled to finish on time for the October opening date. Banning of e-cigarettes The Arvada City Council passed an ordinance banning the use of vaping devices and electronic smoking devices, such as e-cigarettes, in public places, with the exception of tasting in vapor stores.

Seeking an open, transparent government that prioritizes community input, and was critical of the city’s current economic development policies, Dave Chandler, Dave Palm and Carl Campanella made a public stance against the current 2015 continues on Page 14

Changeup with county commissioners It was an unusually busy year for Jeffco commissioners. Republican Libby Szabo of Arvada was sworn in to serve as Jefferson County commissioner for District 1 on Jan. 30. The seat was left vacant when Faye Griffin, who was elected to serve a four-year term in 2012, won the 2014 election for Jeffco clerk and recorder. Leyendecker, chairman for the Jeffco GOP, the Jefferson County Commissioner Vacancy Committee voted for her unanimously. Lang Sias was selected to take the state representative seat previously held by Szabo on Jan. 31. In other county commissioner news this year, Donald Rosier publicly announced on Dec. 10 that he is running for the state Senate seat held by Democratic incumbent Michael Bennet. Rosier entered local politics in 2010 after beating incumbent Democrat Kathy Hartman as county commissioner for Jeffco’s District 3 in the election. He won re-election in 2014.
