“When you saw her, you just smiled,” said Byron Hanson, husband to beloved West Woods Golf Course member and employee, Shirley Hanson. Shirley, 62 and a longtime Arvada resident, educator and coach, passed away in January of lung cancer. An inaugural memorial golf tourney was held Sept. 26 in her memory, raising funds to help a new generation of Arvada youth. “She was a fixture,” said Andy Roboff, a former student, neighbor and friend of Shirley’s. “There’s a place in all our hearts for Shirley.” A longtime Arvada resident, Shirley began her career in the city, teaching physical education at East Arvada Junior High and coaching gymnastics at Arvada High School. She Kent Stastny, a member transferred to of the Men’s Club Pomona High School in 1974 where she continued teaching and coaching track, cross-country and golf. When not working at school or coaching students, she was active in helping the community wherever needed. “She was all in — If you needed somebody, you call Shirley,” Byron said. In 1994, Shirley took a coordinating position with the West Woods Golf Course and the Men’s Club. There she gave her time to help organize the group’s meetings, events and tournament, a position she held for the club’s existence. “She left a very deep impression on a lot of people here,” said Kent Stastny, a member of the Men’s Club. “She was such an integral part of this community.” Since her passing, Stastny and other members of the West Woods Men’s Club echoed Byron’s sentiments and decided they wanted to do something to honor and keep her memory alive. “As we talked through it, the one thing that really stuck was to put a scholarship in her name,” Stastny said. Now official, The Shirley “Pearl” Hanson Scholarship Fund will be an annual scholarship given to one or two Arvada student golfers. To create the fund, the club started the memorial tournament.

COUNCIL APPROVES CITY’S FIRST HOTEL Hilton Garden Inn will be built in Olde Town By Crystal Anderson canderson@coloradocommunitymedia.com

O

ver the past decade, city councils past and present have attempted to bring a hotel to Arvada. On Sept. 21, they succeeded. In a 7-0 vote, the Arvada City Council approved the preliminary development plan for a $22.6 million Hilton Garden Inn hotel at 5445 Olde Wadsworth Blvd. “This was such a priority and goal for a long time

because of the needs of our citizens and our community,” said Mayor Marc Williams following the meeting. “To be able to get a quality Hilton product is a great success for the city.” The five-story, 139-room hotel will stand in the space currently occupied by The Mile High Vineyard Church, which will relocate within the next month to a temporary location at the Arvada K-8 School, 5751 Balsam St.. The Hilton will also have a 2,800-squarefoot meeting and event space, an indoor pool and hot tub, fitness and business centers, an outdoor seating area, fire pit and The American Grill Restaurant and Hotel continues on Page 7

Unincorporated Jeffco to allow pot testing Change will take effect when new year begins Staff Report Jefferson County commissioners have passed an ordinance that will permit marijuana testing facilities at the beginning of the year, but the prohibition of marijuana cultivation/manufacturing facilities, distribution and retail stores in unincorporated areas will remain in effect. The decision was made following a series of meetings beginning on May 29. County staff informed commissioners Libby Szabo, Casey

Tighe and Don Rosier about all aspects of marijuana operations. Amendment 64 of the Colorado Constitution authorizes recreational use of marijuana, including the operation of facilities for cultivation, manufacturing, testing and retail sales. However, the amendment allows counties to regulate the industry, including banning any or all of the four operations. A moratorium forbidding all marijuana operations in unincorporated Jeffco ends on Jan. 1. The Jefferson County cities of Arvada and Golden do not permit any sales of marijuana or marijuana products. The City of Lakewood permits sales of medicinal mari-

juana and products, and the cities of Wheat Ridge and Edgewater permit recreational and medicinal retail sales. Testing facilities analyze marijuana for pesticides and fungus, and edibles for potency. Marijuana and marijuana products that could be tested in unincorporated Jefferson County can come from anywhere in the state of Colorado, as long as the cultivation and manufacturing facility has the proper licenses, Rosier said. Allowing testing facilities will provide people who want to purchase marijuana products a level of surety and consistency of the product they are buying, he added.
