Dear Tiger Fans, We submit for your review our Annual Report from the Department of Athletics highlighting the 2014-15 academic and athletic year. As you know, we compile this report in our ongoing efforts to be transparent in regards to the operations of the Department of Athletics. Within this report you will be presented with information regarding varsity sports, club sports, intramurals, fitness, recreation, sports medicine and sports information.

In addition you will find detailed information regarding financial operations, donations, gifts-in-kind and sponsors.

Our primary focus within the department is ensuring that our students enjoy a valuable educational experience through their participation in athletics. Almost 85% of Colorado College students participate in programming sponsored by the Department of Athletics in either structured or unstructured environments. It is always our goal to maximize participation while maintaining a safe, supportive, inclusive and positive experience.

As the following pages will highlight, our students enjoyed a very successful 2014-15 season. Our varsity and club programs sent many students on to national events while participation in intramurals continued to be among the highest in the country. The usage of the fitness center continues to be among the major success stories of the campus while participation in casual recreation continues to grow. It is very rewarding for all of us to see so many students participating in athletic activities on and off campus.

The Colorado College Athletics Department sponsors 17 varsity programs. Fifteen programs compete at the NCAA Division III level and two at the NCAA Division I level. Division III programs are members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), with the exception of Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, which both competed as independents in 2015. Division I Men’s Ice Hockey is a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) and Division I Women’s Soccer competed as an affiliate member of the Mountain West (MW).

SOUTHERN COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) was formed to provide an association through which the member institutions may encourage organized competition in intercollegiate sports among teams representative of their respective student bodies. Members of this conference share a commitment to priority of the overall quality of academic standards and quality educational experiences.

SCAC member institutions are committed to sponsoring a variety of varsity sports to maximize opportunities for student participation. SCAC schools also operate under the principle that participation in sports should be solely from student interest and enjoyment of athletic competition, and that no financial aid shall be given to any student which is conditional upon athletic ability or participation in intercollegiate sports.

SCAC member institutions support students in efforts to reach high levels of performance by providing them with adequate facilities, competent coaching and appropriate competitive opportunities with students from similar institutions.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE HOCKEY CONFERENCE The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) facilitates and fosters competitive, academic and operational excellence for its member institutions through the sport of ice hockey. The conference supports a culture of professionalism and integrity, reflecting its commitment to grow the sport of ice hockey while creating a positive experience for the student-athletes and fans it serves.

The National Collegiate Hockey Conference was founded in the summer of 2011 when six institutions bonded together to form a collection of some of the most notable college hockey programs in the nation. Just a few months later, the conference grew to eight teams and established the foundation for this prestigious group of institutions. Built on the principles of excellence both on and off the ice, the NCHC is committed to fostering an environment of integrity, sportsmanship and competition.

With a solid foundation of institutions rich in tradition and excellence, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference is poised to solidify itself as the premier college hockey conference with six of eight teams reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2015.

Now in its 16th year, the MW has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics.

Women’s Soccer

Head Coach: Geoff Bennett (11th season)

Colorado College finished the season with an overall record of 12-5-4, 2014-15 ATHLETICS ANNUAL including a 7-3-1 regular-season Mountain West record. The Tigers fell to REPORT eventual MW tournament champion San Diego State in the semifinals. Four members of the CC team earned all-Mountain West honors. Jessie Ayers and Sarah Schweiss were first-team selections, while Rachel Herron and Kaeli Vandersluis were named to the second team. Ayers received first-team accolades for the fourth consecutive season, the first three coming from Conference USA. Three Tigers were named to the 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire NCAA Division I all-Pacific Region team. Ayers and Schweiss were second-team selections, while Vandersluis earned a spot on the third team. Ayers and Vandersluis were also recognized for their academic achievements. Ayers earned first team honors on the NSCAA’s Scholar All-West Region Team while Vandersluis was a secondteam selection. The two joined 11 others honored by the Mountain West for their outstanding performances in the classroom and on the pitch by earning a spot on the Academic All-Mountain West team for the 2014 fall semester. Ten members of the team also earned the Scholar-Athlete Award from the Mountain West, one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, studentathletes must have completed at least two academic terms, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. In July of 2015, the Tigers competed as Team USA for the World University Games in Gwangju, Korea. A roster of 20 former, current and future Tigers was able to take advantage of this wonderful experience. Team USA finished in 12th place with an overall record of 2-4.

Head Coach: Horst Richardson (49th season)

The Colorado College men’s soccer team finished the season 15-4-2 and second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 10-2-2 record. The Tigers fell 2-1 to Trinity University in the final match of the SCAC Tournament after leading most of the game. CC won three of the SCAC’s four major awards and had eight players earn all-conference honors. Senior Andrew Worthington was named Defensive Player of the Year, freshman goalkeeper Theo Hooker was tabbed Newcomer of the Year, and Horst Richardson garnered Coach of the Year honors. Senior forward Brandon Ogilvie, junior midfielder Max Grossenbacher and sophomore defender Christian Wulff all joined Worthington on the SCAC first-team. In addition to Hooker, CC’s second-team selections included senior forward Stuart Beezley and sophomore midfielder Caden MacKenzie. Sophomore defender Jack McCormick earned honorable-mention accolades. Colorado College placed four Richardson players on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s all-West Region teams.

Worthington was named to the first team, while Ogilvie, Grossenbacher and Wulff earned second-team honors. Ogilvie was also named to the 2014 Capital One Division III Academic All-America Team, the nation’s most prestigious academic award for student-athletes. Ogilvie, along with Grossenbacher, also earned first team spots on the NSCAA’s Scholar All-West Region team and the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District men’s soccer team.

As a team, the Tigers recorded a combined 3.54 grade-point average and earned the NSCAA’s Team Academic Award for the eighth year in a row, ranking third nationally among the 281 squads honored from all three NCAA Divisions. Horst Richardson was inducted into the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2014 during an official ceremony at The Broadmoor World Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014.

Richardson announced his retirement following the season. The 2014 season was Richardson’s 50th season coaching CC men’s soccer, his Ogilvie Grossenbacher Worthington 49th as head coach.

Women’s Cross Country

The Colorado College women’s cross country team captured its first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference team title. Sophomore Leah Wessler became the first individual champion from Colorado College, covering the 6-kilometer course in 23 minutes and 17 seconds to lead a pack of seven Tigers earning all-conference honors. Senior Rebecca Lavietes finished second with a time of 23:53 while sophomores Stefani Messick (24:25) and Katie Sandfort (24:35) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Freshman Patty Atkinson ran a personal best 24:44 for a 10th-place finish to clinch the team title for CC. In addition to the five runners that finished in the top 10, sophomore Allie Crimmins and junior Beryl Coulter also earned all-conference honors by finishing 12th and 13th, respectively.

Coach Ted Castaneda was selected as the SCAC Coach of the Year for the women’s team. The team then went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Division III West Regional Championships. Lavietes placed 15th overall with a personalbest time of 22:53.25. Wessler finished 26th and joined Lavietes on the all-region team. Rebecca’s time qualified her for the 2014 NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championships, where she wrapped up her collegiate career with a time of 23:26, good for a 127th place finish.

Senior Nick Hall became the second Colorado College runner to win three individual conference titles and led the Tigers to the 2014 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s cross country team championship. Hall cruised to the individual title by covering the 8k course in 26:37.

Sophomore Ryan Bing ran an outstanding race, finishing third with a time of 27:48.

Sophomore Conor Terhune and junior Tucker Hampson also posted top 10 finishes by placing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Junior Jacob Rothman rounded out the scoring with an 11th place finish, while senior Sam English placed 12th. The six runners in the top 14 all earned a spot on the 2014 all-conference team. Coach Ted Castaneda was selected as the SCAC Coach of the Year Hall for the men’s team. The team then went on to finish 12th at the NCAA Division III West Regional Championships. Hall placed 23rd overall with a time of 26:17.38 in the 8k race and earned all-region honors for the fourth time. Despite missing the 2014 SCAC Cross Country Championships due to an injury, senior Graham Frank was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic Track & Field/Cross Country All-District team. Frank was a three-time all-SCAC runner in cross country and was the league’s Runner of the Week twice in both cross country and track last season.

Women’s Volleyball

Head Coach: Rick Swan (16th season)

2014-15 The Colorado College volleyball team made a 17th consecutive appearance in ATHLETICS ANNUAL the NCAA Division III Tournament after receiving an at-large bid. The Tigers REPORT advanced to the regional semi-finals and finished the season with a 30-9 record, eclipsing the 30-win mark for the fifth time in six seasons.

Sophomore libero Sophie Merrifield eclipsed her own school record for the most digs in a single season, finishing with 739. Five members of the team earned all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors.

Sophomore Abbe Holtze and freshman Sarah Barker earned a pair of the highest honors. Holtze earned the top award by being named the SCAC Player of the Year, while Barker was named the SCAC Freshman of the Year. Senior Kristen Liberty was named first-team all-conference, while junior Sophie Merrifield and sophomore Keli Sherwood were both named to Holtze the second team. Sherwood and Holtze were American Volleyball Coaches Association all-West Region selections. Holtze went on to receive All-American Honorable Mention accolades from the AVCA. For the third time in the last four years, the team was honored for its outstanding performance in the classroom as one of 140 Division III programs that received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association for the 2014-15 academic year. CC was one of three schools from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, along with Sherwood Schreiner and Southwestern, to earn the distinction.

The 2014-15 Colorado College men’s hockey team finished the year with an overall record of 6-26-3. The season ended with a 3-2 loss to the University of North Dakota in Game 2 of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s first-round playoff series. Sophomore Jaccob Slavin was named to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s first team after earning a spot on the NCHC preseason team last September. Slavin finished second in the voting among the league’s blue-liners. Aaron Harstad was named a 2015 All-American Athlete Award recipient by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and EAS Sports Nutrition. The program recognizes collegiate and high school athletes whose athletic accomplishments reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning. Ten Tigers, including National Collegiate Hockey Conference Scholar-Athlete Jared Hanson, emerged as members of the NCHC’s Academic All-Conference Team, maintaining at least a 3.00 grade-point average for the last two semesters. The program also earned high marks in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, scoring a near-flawless 997 for the multi-year scores from 2010-14.

Women’s Basketball

Head Coach: Liz Doran (7th season)

2014-15

The 2014-15 women’s basketball team finished the season with an overall record of 2-24. The Tigers were led by senior Courtney Tyus, who earned second-team all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors. Tyus received all-conference honors for the third time after being a third-team selection during her sophomore and junior campaigns.

Junior forward Danielle Davis was named to the third team after receiving honorable mention accolades a year ago. Tyus led the SCAC in assists (5.6) and steals (2.4) per game. She also ranked sixth in scoring (12.8) and 14th in both rebounds (6.0) and blocked shots (0.5). Tyus became only the 11th player in the 40-year history of CC women’s basketball to record at least 1,000 career points and joined Melanie Auguste (2005-09) as one of only two players in program history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists and 200 steals.

The Colorado College men’s basketball team finished the 2014-15 campaign with a 13-13 overall record and claimed fifth in the SCAC’s regular-season standings with a 7-7 mark.

The Tigers fell to host University of Dallas in the opening game of the 2015 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Senior Chris Lesnansky was named to the All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference first team while Justin Berardino, Russell Clark and Luke Winfield earned honorable mention recognition. Lesnansky was a firstteam selection for the third year in a row. He started all 103 games during his four seasons at Colorado College and completed his career ranked fifth in program history with 642 rebounds, eighth with 1,487 points and 20th with 153 assists. Off the court, the Tigers formed a tight friendship with a nine-year-old boy from Colorado Springs, Carter Gates, who is battling leukemia. Prior to the team’s matchup with Johnson and Wales on December 16th, a press conference was held to announce Gates was signing with the Tigers. He was introduced as Colorado College’s sixth man and then scored the first basket of the night to the delight of the crowd of nearly 700 fans.

Women’s Swimming & Diving

Head Coach: Anne Goodman James (9th season) 2014-15

The women’s swimming and diving team broke nine school records during the season ATHLETICS ANNUAL REPORT and finished second place at the 2015 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. Ten Tigers earned All-SCAC accolades as the Big Cats threatened to end Trinity’s 15-year reign atop the SCAC. Individual titles were won by junior Olivia Dilorati (100 butterfly and 200 backstroke), freshman Ellen Silk (200 butterfly) and junior Megan Gillespie (100 and 200 breaststroke). The three were joined by freshman Justina Zuckerman for a title in the 200 medley relay and junior Annalise Grigereit for first place in the 400 medley relay. Dilorati was invited to the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships for the second consecutive year. She finished 17th in the 100-butterfly preliminaries, 21st in the 100-backstroke prelims and 29th in the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries. Dilorati was also honored as a Scholar AllAmerican for the second consecutive year while sophomore Megan Gillespie and freshman Ellen Silk each earned honorable mention Scholar All-American honors. Junior Emma Holmes earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District team for the second consecutive season and the CC swimming and diving women’s team earned Team Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for both the 2014 fall and 2015 spring semesters. The team ranked 12th nationally among NCAA Division III schools for the fall and third for the spring, finishing with a 3.67 team GPA. The Colorado College coaching staff was named SCAC Women’s Co Staff of the Year. Led by head coach Anne Goodman James, the staff was honored for the third consecutive season.

Head Coach: Anne Goodman James (9th season)

Senior Austin Howlett captured eighth place nationally on the three-meter board at the 2015 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships and earned All-America honors for the third straight year. He was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Male Diver of the Year for the fourth consecutive season after winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter titles. Howlett won six conference diving crowns in which he competed during his four seasons in the league. He helped the men’s swimming and diving team to a fourth place finish at the 2015 SCAC Championships. Along with Austin and 1650 freestyle champion, senior Matthew Nadel (16:58.16), nine Tigers earned All-Conference Honors. The team broke three school records during the season. Howlett was also honored as a Scholar All-American for the second consecutive year and the men ranked No. 1 nationally among NCAA Division III schools earning Team Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for the 2014 fall semester. The following semester, the Tigers captured the fourth spot finishing with a combined 3.52 team GPA.

The Colorado College women’s lacrosse team finished the 2015 season with a 10-7 record. Four Tigers earned spots on the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s all-West Region team.

Sophomore midfielder Mary Taussig earned a spot on the first team for the second year in a row, while sophomore Sadie Cole, sophomore Abbe Sawabini and freshman Steph Kelly were second-team selections. Taussig led CC with personal single-season highs of 43 goals and 51 points. After only two seasons, Taussig already ranks 18th on the program’s career list with 70 goals and is tied for 19th with 94 points. For the fifth year in a row and the tenth time since 2004, the Colorado College women’s lacrosse team earned top academic honors from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). CC was one of 129 Division III programs to be named an Academic Honor Squad for maintaining a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the 2014-15 academic year. Seniors Kirby Leyshon and Leigh Nicholl were joined by junior Sammy Blair on the IWLCA Division III Academic Honor Roll. The three were honored for holding a cumulative academic GPA of 3.5 or greater.

Head Coach: Sean Woods (4th season)

During the 2015 season, Colorado College earned its third consecutive postseason appearance, facing Endicott College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The Tigers finished the regular season with a record of 12-3 to earn one of just nine atlarge bids for the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately, CC was unable to advance past the first round, dropping a 12-6 decision to the No. 9 Gulls. For the first time in program history, Halle three members of the Colorado College men’s lacrosse team received honorable-mention All-America accolades from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association during the same season. Junior goaltender Chase Murphy earned the distinction for the second time, while senior midfielder Henri Halle and junior defender Tim Jenkins were recognized for the first time. Halle was one of 32 players named to the North roster for the 74th annual United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association/LaxWorld North-South All-Star game.

Women’s Tennis

Head Coach: Anthony Weber (2nd season) 2014-15

The Colorado College women’s tennis team finished the 2015 season ranked 16th in the Division III West Region, its best season-ending regional ranking since a No. 15 posting at the end of the 2010 campaign. The Tigers finished in second place at the 2015 SCAC championships, falling to nationally-ranked Trinity in the title match. Freshmen Fiona Cerf and Natalia Dellavalle, and sophomore Maddie Cahill-Sanidas were all named to the SCAC All-Tournament Team. Competing with a roster that listed four of its top six singles players as either freshmen or sophomores, coach Anthony Weber guided his squad to its first conference final since joining the SCAC in 2007. CC finished the 2014-15 campaign with a 9-9 record, the most wins in a season since 2011-12. Weber and Cerf were named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Women’s Coach and Newcomer of the Year, respectively. Cerf also received all-SCAC honors and was joined on the team by senior Mary Edman and Dellavalle.

Edman, who earned all-SCAC honors for the second time (2013), finished the season with a 10-8 singles record, while Dellavalle led the squad with 12 singles victories. Colorado College placed three players on the all-SCAC team for the first time in program history and tied Trinity for the most by a team in the league.

The Colorado College men’s tennis team concluded its 2014-15 season by winning the fifth-place match at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships with a 5-1 victory over Austin College.

With the win, the Tigers finished the campaign with a 4-15 record.

Sophomore Jason Gutierrez, senior Ross Sherman and sophomore Jack Benham made the SCAC All-Tournament Team for making it through the conference tournament undefeated. Guitierrez was honored at No. 1 singles, Sherman at No. 4 singles and Benham paired with Sherman at the No. 3 doubles spot. Earlier in the season, Jack Burger became the first Tiger to win a singles match against a Division I opponent since 2007 by rallying from a set down to post a 1-6, 6-3, 1-0(7) victory over Matt Pronesti of Portland State. The senior from Steamboat Springs, Colo., won several matches from just about every position in the Tiger lineup. Initially a No. 2 doubles player and No. 5 singles player as a freshman, Burger led the team at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles his senior year, his second year as a team captain.

Women’s Track & Field

The Women’s track and field team set 43 personal records in 2015. The Colorado College women took away nine all-league plaques from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Sophomore Leah Wessler and senior Rebecca Lavietes earned conference titles in the 5,000 meters and 10K races, respectively.

Lavietes also finished second behind Wessler in the 5,000-meter race as the two helped CC secure third place at the 2015 SCAC Track & Field Championships, its best finish since joining the conference in 2007. Joining Wessler and Lavietes with all-SCAC distinction was CC’s 4x400 relay team of Stefani Messick, Corey Luna, Duranya Freeman and Ayla Loper, which claimed third with a time of 4:08.61. Messick, Freeman and Loper also earned individual recognition in addition to Katie Sandfort and Patty Atkinson. The Colorado College track and field team continued their tradition of academic excellence by winning the All-Academic Track & Field Team Award from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2014-15 academic year.

Men’s Track & Field Head Coach: Ted Castaneda (23rd season) During the 2015 season, the men’s track and field team recorded 40 personal records and had seven All-Conference performances. Senior Graham Frank led the Tigers to a fourth-place finish during the 2015 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, finishing second in the SCAC for both the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter races. Fellow senior Sam English finished the 5,000-meter race just behind Frank, taking third place while sophomore Conor Terhune captured third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Sophomore Ryan Bing also earned all-conference accolades, taking second in the 800 meters.

CC captured a pair of third-place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 sprint relays. The foursome of freshmen Justin Nguyen, Gabe Fine and Robin Li and senior Tyler Green ran the 4x100 relay in 46.61 seconds, while freshmen Ethan Holland and Fine, junior Tucker Hampson and freshman Sean Fite completed the 4x400 race in 3:32.30. The Colorado College track and field team continued their tradition of academic excellence by winning the All-Academic Track & Field Team Award from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Colorado College volleyball team made a 17th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament after receiving an at-large bid. The Tigers advanced to the regional semifinals.

Senior Rebecca Lavietes qualified for the 2014 NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championships where she wrapped up her collegiate career with a time of 23:26, good for a 127th place finish.

Senior Austin Howlett captured eighth place nationally on the threemeter board at the 2015 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

Junior Olivia Dilorati was invited to the 2015 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships. She finished 17th in the 100-butterfly preliminaries, 21st in the 100-backstroke prelims and 29th in the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries.

The Men’s lacrosse team finished the regular season with a record of 12-3 and earned one of just nine at-large bids for the NCAA Division III Championships. This was the program’s third consecutive appearance in the national tournament.

Men’s soccer head coach Horst Richardson was selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the second time.

Richardson guided the Tigers to a 15-4-2 record, their most since the 2004 squad posted a 16-4-1 record. Colorado College was nationally ranked for most of the season, peaking at No. 14 on Oct. 7.

Cross country head coach Ted Castaneda was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for both the men’s and women’s teams. The Tigers swept both the SCAC men’s and women’s team titles. It was the first men’s title for Colorado College since the Tigers won three straight SCAC titles from 2009-2011. The championship on the women’s side represents the program’s first-ever SCAC cross country title.

In exclusive voting of the league’s head coaches that took place at the 2015 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships, the Colorado College coaching staff, consisting of head coach Anne Goodman James, assistant coaches Jess Siegele, Ryan Hogan and diving coach Ellen Walker, was named SCAC Women’s Co-Swimming and Diving Staff of the Year. It marked the third year in a row the staff received the award.

Anthony Weber was named the 2015 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Women’s Tennis Coach of the Hogan Walker Year. Weber led the Tigers to a second-place finish at the 2015 SCAC championships, falling to nationally ranked Trinity in the title match.

Weber guided his squad to its first conference final since joining the SCAC in 2007.

CC finished the 2014-15 campaign with a 9-9 record, the most wins in a season since 2011-12.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Colorado College’s two Division I athletic programs earned high marks in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The women’s soccer program posted a perfect 1000 score and was recognized by the NCAA with the Public Recognition Award for being in the top 10 percent of all NCAA programs in its sport. The men’s hockey program, meanwhile, earned a near-flawless 997 for the multi-year scores from 2010-14.

The Colorado College men and women cross country and track and field teams repeated as recipients of Team All-Academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2014-15 seasons. To qualify, a team must collectively post a grade-point average of 3.10 or greater.

The Colorado College men’s and women’s tennis teams were among 158 Division III squads to be honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as All-Academic Teams for the 2014-15 season. The CC women’s team had a 3.40 grade-point average for the past academic year, while the men’s squad put together a 3.39 GPA.

For the third time in the last four years, the Colorado College women’s volleyball team was honored for its outstanding performance in the classroom as one of 140 Division III programs that received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Colorado College men’s soccer team recorded a combined 3.54 grade-point average during the 2013 season and earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s SCAA Men’s Team Academic Award for the eighth year in a row and the 14th time since the recognition was instituted in 1996.

The Colorado College swimming and diving teams ranked first (men) and 12th nationally among NCAA Division III schools earning Team Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for the 2014 fall semester. The Tigers ranked fourth (men) and third (women) for the 2015 spring semester.

The Colorado College men’s basketball team was rewarded for their efforts in the classroom with the Team Academic Excellence Award presented by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. CC was among only 154 squads in all of Division I, II, and III, along with NAIA Division I and II, to post a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the 2014-15 academic year.

For the fifth year in a row and the tenth time since 2004, the Colorado College women’s lacrosse team earned top academic honors from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). CC was named an Academic Honor Squad for maintaining a combined grade-point average of 3.38 during the 2014-15 academic year.

DEPARTMENT NEWS Richardson Stepping Down As Head Coach Horst Richardson, who completed his 49th season as head coach of the men’s soccer team and 50th overall with the program in 2014, stepped down after the season. Since joining the program in 1965 as an assistant under Bill Boddington and then taking the reins a year later in 1966, Richardson has compiled a 567-304-71 record, which ranks third nationally in career victories among active Division III men’s soccer coaches as well as sixth among coaches from all three NCAA Divisions.

During his extraordinary career, the Tigers earned 19 NCAA tournament bids and advanced to the national semifinals in 1992 when Colorado College finished the season with an overall record of 18-2-2. The Tigers also won seven conference championships in the old Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League.

Richardson earned NSCAA regional Coach of the Year honors five times. In 1998, at the NSCAA’s annual convention, he was one of five recipients of the organization’s Letter of Commendation. He also received the NSCAA’s prestigious Bill Jeffrey Award, for longtime achievement in college soccer, in 2001.

Richardson, who served as a professor in the College’s German Department for 43 years, demanded the same level of commitment in the classroom as he expected on the pitch. Seven of his players were named Academic All-Americans, and his 2013 squad ranked third nationally among all NCAA Divisions with a combined 3.54 grade-point average.

CC Women’s Soccer was Team USA The Colorado College women’s soccer team experienced a once in a lifetime opportunity last summer as it represented the United States at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea. The 20-member team, consisting of incoming freshmen, returning players and recent alums, played six games during its 18-day trip.

“Representing Team USA is something everyone has always dreamed of,” rising senior Sarah Schweiss said. “The first time we walked onto the field wearing red, white and blue, I got chills. To be representing not only Colorado College but the United States as well was an honor. It seemed unreal that we were competing together for our country.”

CC/Team USA finished 12th at the event with a 2-4 record, defeating South Africa in pool play and Ireland in the classification bracket, both by a 1-0 score. Ayers Drafted By FC Kansas City Jessie Ayers, one of the most decorated players in the 30-year history of Colorado College women’s soccer, was selected by FC Kansas City in the third round of the 2015 National Women’s Soccer League College Draft. Ayers, the 26th overall pick, is the first-ever Tiger drafted by an NWSL franchise.

Ayers, who graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in history/ political science, finished her CC career tied for third in program history with 32 career goals and tied for fourth with 74 points.

During that time, she struck for 10 game-winning goals and set up the deciding goal on five occasions.

Among her many awards and honors, Ayers was named to Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List in 2013 and 2014 and was selected to train with the U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team in June 2014. The native of Seattle, Wash., was named a secondteam all-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as a sophomore in 2012 and was one of only four underclassmen among the 32 players to earn a spot on the first or second teams.

Ayers became the 14th Tiger to earn All-America honors from the NSCAA, the first since Robyn Neigle, Karla Thompson and Cissy Wafford were recognized in 1990. She also received all-region honors and was a first-team all-conference selection all four years at CC. She was named Conference USA’s Midfielder of the Year during her first two collegiate seasons, as well as the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2011. She also was a second-team selection on Soccer America’s all-freshman team.

During her career, Colorado College posted a combined 51-20-14 record. The Tigers won back-to-back C-USA regular-season titles as well as the 2013 conference tournament, and made two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs. Rob Doyle ‘87 (hockey), Laura Luckett ‘84 (diving), Philip “Flip” Naumburg ‘75 (lacrosse), Sog Panter ‘42 (football/track), Scott Robertson ‘89 (football/baseball) and Jason Valant ‘93 (basketball) were enshrined as the Class of 2015.

A three-time MVP of the hockey team, Doyle scored 51 goals and added 151 assists in his four years at CC. His 202 career point lead all defensemen and are fifth overall on the school’s all-time scoring list. Doyle was a three-time all-WCHA per former, earning first-team honors as a senior. He went on to play nearly 1,000 games as a professional player in the U.S. and Europe and represented Austria in the 1994 Olympic Games.

Luckett was Colorado College’s first female diver to earn All-America honors, earning that status on the 3-meter board in both 1983 and ‘84.

She advanced to the national championships each season, placing ninth as a junior in 1983 and sixth as a senior in 1984. Following her graduation, Luckett returned to CC as the diving coach from 1986-88 and was named the Division III Coach of the Year in ‘87.

Naumburg racked up 35 career points (31g,4a) in his four-year career at CC. During his time at CC, he co-founded the Vail Lacrosse Shootout, then served as head coach at Colorado State University for 14 seasons.

Naumburg led the Rams to a 208-52 overall record, five Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association national championships and six Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference titles.

Panter was a two-time all-conference selection as a center for the Tigers in 1940 and ‘41. Following his graduation, he was highly regarded by a number of NFL teams, but he rejected professional football and instead joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. Robertson, widely regarded as the best linebacker in the history of Colorado College football, was a Division III All-America selection and named the Small College Defensive Player of the Year by The Denver Post as a senior in 1988. He also holds the school record for solo tackles (372), assisted tackles (300), total tackles (672) and fumble recoveries (9) in a career.

Valant, a three-time team captain at CC, is third on the school’s career scoring list with 1,899 points and the school-record holder with 315 made three-pointers. He was instrumental in the Tigers winning a school-record 22 games and advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Division III Tournament in 1992, the program’s first appearance since 1960.

Bill Hay Elected to Hockey Hall of Fame Bill “Red” Hay, a 1958 graduate of Colorado College and member of its 1957 national championship hockey team, has been selected for induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the category of Builder.

The Hall of Fame defines a Builder as an individual who has contributed to the development of the game of hockey, moving the game forward.

Hay notched 154 points (60g, 94a) in two seasons as a Tiger and was named a first-team All-American both years.

Following his graduation, Hay became the first former NCAA player to appear in the National Hockey League when he debuted with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 1959-60 campaign. That season, he recorded 55 points and was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s Rookie of the Year. He also earned a spot in the 1960 NHL All-Star Game. The following year, paired on a line with Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita, Hay helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1938.

Hay, the first CC graduate to enter the Hockey Hall of Fame, played six more seasons with the Blackhawks before retiring from professional hockey. Since then, he has worked in his family’s oil business and was part owner and team president of the Calgary Flames. He also served 15 years as Chairman and CEO of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Legendary Tigers Inducted to Springs Hall of Fame Colorado College men’s soccer coach Horst Richardson and former hockey great Peter Geronazzo were inducted into the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame on October 28, 2014.

Since joining CC in 1965 as an assistant under Bill Boddington and then taking the reigns a year later in 1966, Richardson compiled a distinguished record of 552 victories, 300 defeats and 69 ties.

Geronazzo, meanwhile, came to Colorado College from Trail, British Columbia, as a walk-on and watched the 1991-92 Tiger ice hockey team from the stands. He then proceeded to become an All-American, Hobey Baker top-ten finalist, and one of the school’s most productive players in history.

In 1995-96, when the Tigers reached the NCAA Frozen Four title game against the University of Michigan, Geronazzo was one of eight Colorado College players to garner All-WCHA accolades, joining goaltender Ryan Bach on the league’s elite First Team before both raked in All-America honors. Pete completed his collegiate career with 91 goals and 87 assists in 146 games.

2014-15 SAAC Highlights Quony Cup The 6th Annual Quony Cup was held on campus Sunday, April 26 – a rare cold and wet Colorado Springs day. Supporters were not deterred as the all-campus soccer tournament commemorating former CC men’s soccer and lacrosse student-athlete Chris Quon ‘09 and one of Quon’s lacrosse teammates, Evan Spirito ‘10, was a huge success. Quon initially organized the tournament in 2008 as the “Answer to Cancer,” with proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society and designated to young patients living with cancer at a local hospital. After Quon’s unexpected passing due to a heart condition in 2009, his friends at Colorado College decided to continue his legacy by organizing a similar tournament in April 2010, renaming it the “Quony Cup” in his honor. The tournament also pays tribute to one of Quon’s teammates, Evan Spirito, who lost his battle against cancer in the fall of 2011. The double-elimination tournament attracted over 20 teams, including three teams of alums, and featured music, food, and good company throughout the day. Team Deuce (an alumni team) regained the crown, preventing a three-peat from the Economics Department. Over $4,600 was raised to benefit the American Cancer Society.

End of the Year Athletics Banquet On May 4, SAAC sponsored the annual end of the year Athletics Banquet in Bemis Hall. The student-athletes and coaches were honored to have 1984 Olympian and gold medalist Benita Fitzgerald Mosley address the crowd of 200. Fitzgerald Mosley is the current chief of organizational excellence for the United States Olympic Committee and oversees the three U.S. Olympic Training Centers, athlete career programs, the athlete ombudsman’s office, diversity and inclusion, human resources, facilities, NGB organizational development, security and strategic planning. She was the first African American woman and just the second American woman to win Olympic gold in the 100-meter hurdles. Her presentation was just as impressive as her resume.

The banquet concluded following an awards presentation and a video featuring highlights from all 17 Tiger teams, produced by Andrew Worthington ‘15 (men’s soccer). CC Athletics has much to be proud of this past year and it was great to celebrate with everyone.

Show of Talents On March 3, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee hosted the 2nd annual Show of Talents in Cornerstone Arts Center. Every varsity Tiger team was represented with an act, and performances were judged by Dean of Students Mike Edmonds, Economics Professor and Faculty Athletics Representative Pedro de Araujo, Athletics Coordinator of Rehabilitation Services Cindy Endicott and Campus Safety Officer Billy Porter. The event was emceed by seniors Peter Stoykewych (hockey), Joe Howard (men’s basketball) and Jack Burger (men’s tennis) who displayed a few talents of their own. Music, dancing, and comedy sketches filled the program, including a trombone performance by Men’s Lacrosse Assistant Coach Frank Abruzzini. The volleyball team took home the Dougie Cup with a parody song titled “Sportz.”

Team Impact and Carter Gates The men’s basketball team has partnered with Team Impact, a national organization that matches children with life-threatening or chronic diseases with college teams.

Nine-year old Carter Gates was drafted by the Tigers.

NBC Nightly News visited during the Tigers’ game on December 16 and featured the story in a broadcast.

Quony Cup The Sixth Annual Quony Cup was held on Sunday, April 26.

The event, sponsored by CC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in conjunction with the Christopher Quon Foundation, serves as a campuswide fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

Children’s Hospital Colorado Zach Aman, Cody Bradley, Garrett Cecere and Christian Heil from the hockey team spent their day off at Children’s Hospital Colorado at Memorial Hospital Central.

National Student-Athlete Day More than 30 student-athletes visited local elementary and middle schools in celebration of National Student-Athlete Day during the week of April 5th.

Women’s Basketball & Habitat The Colorado College women’s basketball team spent second block break volunteering with Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity.

Teacher Work Day Basketball Clinic Local schools were closed for a teacher work day on January 5 so the Tiger basketball teams invited all the kids to Reid Arena for a free clinic.

National Girls and Women in Sport Day On Sunday, January 18, the Colorado College Athletics Department played host to the National Girls & Women in Sports Day. Representatives from CC’s teams were present as well as several National Governing Bodies.

Hour of Power Relay On November 11, the Colorado College swimming and diving team participated in the 9th annual Ted Mullin “Leave it in the Pool” Hour of Power Relay for sarcoma research.

Skate with the Tigers In conjunction with the Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs, six members of the hockey team visited Acacia Park on November 30 for CC Tigers Day! They skated with Tiger fans of all ages in an outdoor skating session during a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Southeast Springs Soccer Initiative The men’s soccer team held a practice session with members of the Southeast Springs Soccer Initiative (SESSI). SESSI brings together passionate leaders from the soccer, law enforcement, education and juvenile justice systems to offer soccer opportunities to at-risk youth in Southeast Colorado Springs.

Tigers Care and Share During the hockey game versus USA Hockey’s U-18 team on December 27, the Tigers hosted a food drive to benefit the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado.

Teddy Bear Toss Fans threw teddy bears and other stuffed animals onto the ice on Friday, November 21, during first intermission of the hockey game. All toys were donated to The Bob Telmosse Foundation.

Soccer Fun Day The Colorado College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee welcomed Special Olympics Colorado for the fourth annual Soccer Fun Day on Saturday, April 11.

Paintball with Veterans On May 1, members of the Colorado College Men’s basketball team spent the afternoon playing paintball with and against a group of veterans from the Army, Marines and Air Force who suffered combat injuries while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Colorado College supported 13 club sports during the 2014-2015 academic year. The club sport programs place a high degree of emphasis on student initiative, organization, leadership, decision making and team management. These program elements allow participants to shape their own experience to a much greater degree than any other athletic program at the College.

Colorado College maintains a budget for the operations of recognized club sports on campus. Funding is provided to cover team association dues, tournament fees, referee/official expenses, venue rental fees for competition, first aid kits and intra-oral safety devices. All other expenses are expected to be paid in full by the club team and its members. Special funding for coaching fees and post-season competition is determined on a case-by-case basis by the Director of Club Sports and the Director of Athletics.

El Pomar Sports Center

The El Pomar Sports Center houses the athletics department offices as well as J. Juan Reid Arena, home court for the CC basketball and volleyball teams, and Schlessman Natatorium. The building also is equipped with an auxiliary gym, climbing wall space, hockey shooting room, a state-of-the art training area, modern exercise-physiology and biomechanics labs, a weight room exclusively for varsity athletes and the fitness center for use by the entire campus community. After 15 months of construction, extensive improvements to the tune of $27 million at the athletic and recreation facilities in Colorado College’s El Pomar Sports Center were completed in spring of 2013. With the recent renovations and addition of the Adam F. Press Fitness Center, it will meet the needs of students, faculty and staff for years to come. The facility originally opened on Dec. 29, 1970, and was a major addition to the campus at the time.

Reid Arena

Named after the late Juan J. Reid, longtime faculty member, historian and Director of Athletics at Colorado College, Reid Arena is the home court for CC’s volleyball and basketball teams.The facility features seating for approximately 1,000 spectators with stands on both sides of the main surface as well as above the east end zone. It is equipped with courtside Internet access, as well as telephone service for visiting radio broadasts and six retractable backboards.

Ritt Kellogg Climbing Gym

Completed early in 2013 as part of a $27 million renovation and expansion project of the El Pomar Sports Center and now 27 feet high, this state-of-theart facility features 3,500 square feet of climbing surface, 24 rope stations, bouldering caves, natural cracks and a chimney/off-width area. The space is named after the late Ritt Kellogg, who graduated from Colorado College in 1990 with a degree in philosophy.

Schlessman Natatorium

Still one of the finest facilities of its type in the Rocky Mountain Region after half a century of existence, Schlessman Natatorium serves as the home for Colorado College’s varsity swimming and diving teams as well as a recreational facility for the entire campus community. CC’s aquatic complex features 1- and 3-meter maxiflex diving boards above a 14-feet-deep diving well along with the pool’s eight racing lanes. Recent renovations include a new vestibule entrance, new bleachers and renovated locker rooms.

Jerry Carle Varsity Strength & Conditioning Center

The Jerry Carle Varsity Strength & Conditioning Center, which opened in December 2012, is a varsity-only facility located on the first floor of the El Pomar Sports Center. The expanded training accommodations, which occupy the spaces formerly housing the Carle Weight Room and the Turf Room, contain state-of the-art cardio machines and free weights, as well as a plyometric training area and hockey shooting room.

Adam F. Press Fitness Center

The Adam F. Press Fitness Center provides a safe, healthy, diverse and invigorating workout experience for members of the Colorado College community. The Fitness Center features the 3,500-square-foot Smith Cardio Center, a 4,500-square-foot strength training room, the 1,000-square-foot Louis Multi-Purpose Room, a group exercise studio for yoga and other fitness classes, a full-sized (94’ X 50’) recreational gym, the 27-foot high Ritt Kellogg Climbing Gym, one squash court and one convertible squash/racquetball court.

Stewart Field

Stewart Field has served the needs of baseball, football, lacrosse and soccer at CC, and has undergone many changes en route to become the current home turf for men’s and women’s varsity soccer as well as the women’s lacrosse team. The natural-grass playing surface accommodates a regulation-size soccer field. An enclosed two-story press box, which houses a medical trainer’s room on its lower level, was built at midfield along the west sideline in the late 1990s, and covered benches were added in 2003.

The Broadmoor World Arena

Washburn Field

Washburn Field, full-time stomping ground for the men’s lacrosse team at Colorado College, also serves as part-time home venue for the men’s and women’s soccer squads, as well as a practice/training facility for track and field. The historic site has been a fixture on the CC campus for more than a century. The Frank Flood Memorial Track, named after a longtime CC football assistant and track coach, was resurfaced and improved as part of the project during the summer of 2013. The world-famous summit of Pikes Peak, 14,115 feet above sea level, still dominates the landscape as viewed from the grandstand on the east sideline. Named after Rev. Phillip Washburn, rector at Grace Episcopal Church and an avid CC football fan, it is formerly known as the oldest of its type west of the MIssissippi River.

One of the finest college hockey facilities anywhere, The Broadmoor World Arena has been on national display as the site for the NCAA West Regional in 2004 and 2008. It opened its doors as CC’s new home in January of 1998. Ever since, the Tigers have strived to take full advantage of their state-of-the-art surroundings. Everything about the facility is first class, and the Colorado College program is a major benefactor of the amenities. Part of a $58.8 million complex located in the southern end of the city’s business district off Interstate 25, the main arena features an Olympic-size sheet of ice (100 by 200 feet) and officially seats 7,380 spectators for hockey.

Burghart Tennis Courts

The Burghart Courts, located adjacent to Washburn Field on the Colorado College campus, provide a home competition site for the Colorado College men’s and women’s tennis teams. The complex can accommodate as many as five matches at once, with convenient entrances to all courts and easy access to locker rooms. In addition to serving as the home facility for varsity competition, the courts are available for use by the entire campus community.

Burghart Tennis Courts are named after longtime CC supporters Bob and Yolanda Burghart, who both graduated from the College in the 1920s.

Honnen Ice Arena

The facility, located just east of the El Pomar Sports Center and the Schlessman Natatorium, was built in 1963 at a cost of $750,000 by architects Lusk & Wallace of Colorado Springs. It opened on Feb. 5, 1966.

It was named for the main donors: the Edward H. Honnen family of Denver. Both hockey and figure skating are featured at the rink.

An individual can find a program to suit their needs from learning to skate to hockey pick-up games and adult league games.

2014-15

ATHLETICS ANNUAL REPORT

320 athletes went through pre-participation exams prior to the start of their respective seasons.

These exams include review of current injury status, coordination of physician visits when necessary, and any further testing deemed appropriate by team physicians.

Neuropsychological baseline tests were performed on all new first-year and junior student-athletes.

Since injuries occur in varying complexity, each injury must be thoroughly evaluated to determine the severity, how it will effect sport participation and need for referral to other medical professionals.

214 medical referrals resulted in a physician office visit.

91 in-house clinic opportunities were available for an athlete to see a physician on campus.

295 medical appointments were completed on campus-free of charge to the student athlete. This is of great value due to the cost savings from not having co-pay responsibilities, no bills generated to insurance and the secondary insurance policy and less time and travel required by student-athlete and sports medicine staff.

955 Physical Therapy evaluations and rehabilitation appointments were performed during the 2014-2015 academic year.

127 injury prevention screenings were performed in an effort to reduce the number of significant injuries sustained by athletes.

Team physicians, which include all specialty areas of care, rotate through the Sports Medicine facility on a weekly basis to provide pro bono work at a conservative value of greater than $100,000 per year.

To insure optimum communication and continuum of care, each athlete is accompanied by a member of the sports medicine staff to his/her appointment with team physicians and specialists.

Sports Medicine continues to attract quality students who have an interest in pursuing careers in the medical and allied health fields and help prepare them for successful admission into MD, DO, PA, PT and RN/NP post graduate schools.
