Congratulations to the Colorado Academy Class of 2020!
This class of 98 students had to live the CA mission, demonstrating courage, kindness, and resilience in ways they had not foreseen. They left campus for Spring Break and returned to a changed world, as the COVID-19 global pandemic disrupted all plans for their final trimester. The sports season, social events, performances, farewells to friends and teachers—all that they had looked forward to since starting Upper School had to be canceled or redesigned.
Yet, in the spirit of CA, these students did what was asked of them to save lives. They stayed home. And they pivoted to make the best of it. One sat down at her sewing machine and started making masks for people who needed them. Others collected letters of gratitude for health care workers. One Senior recreated the entire opening number to the (canceled) Spring musical virtually—and singlehandedly. All the Seniors checked in on Zoom meetings to stay connected with their Kindergarten Buddies and serve as role models during difficult days. The Class of 2020 should not be remembered, however, by just their final trimester. In their years at CA, they performed in unforgettable plays and musicals, competed for and won State Championships, created distinctive artwork, and distinguished themselves inside and outside the classroom. Colorado Academy prepared them for the opportunities of the future, and their final trimester prepared them for some of the more difficult challenges they may ever face.
Thanks to the Class of 2020 for all you have brought to CA. Good luck on your new adventures!

At CA since: Second Grade
Powerful Experience: I have worked so hard throughout high school to be the best that I can be at diving. At State this year, I placed the highest I ever have, broke my personal record by 20 points, and was named League Diver of the Year. I believe that record is going to be there for a very long time, and I find joy in that accomplishment.
Community Impact Project: Through Mile High Dive Club, I coached the younger group on my dive team through warm-ups and workouts to help improve their diving skills.
Transformational Experience I Will Remember: During my Junior year, I traveled to Turkey and Colombia and learned so much about the people and culture of these two countries. I went to school with my host families while also exploring the country and going on various excursions with historical and social importance.
Immediate Plans: Chapman University, Orange, Calif., to study Early and Middle Childhood Education/ Integrated Educational Studies.
At CA since: Sixth Grade
Powerful Experience: Going to Cuba for my Junior year Interim taught me about Cuban culture and helped me learn about a country and culture I knew nothing about.
Community Impact Project: I helped with the Special Olympics golf program at CommonGround Golf Course. We helped with the practices and participated in the tournaments.
Transformational Experience I Will Remember: CA taught me to develop leadership skills such as mentoring younger students and showing a good work ethic. By participating in clubs and challenging Interims, I was able to do things that I haven’t done before while serving as a role model for younger students.
What made me happiest at CA: Playing Varsity Golf for the past four years helped me become friends with upperclassmen when I was a Freshman and develop friendships with younger players when I was a Senior.
Immediate Plans: Denison University, Granville, Ohio, to study Political Science, Economics, and History.
At CA since: Fourth Grade
Powerful Experience: The most powerful experience I had at CA was the diversity of my experiences. I got to dive into the Jazz Band, play Varsity Tennis, and fall in love with both math and literature courses.
Community Impact Project: I started brewing kombucha with my friend, and we sold our organic, fresh brew to friends and family, sending the proceeds to Bears Ears National Monument.
Favorite CA Tradition: The Interim program has taken me to so many great places and with amazing friends and faculty. I don’t think I’ll ever forget hiking through Canyonlands with Head of School, Dr. Davis.
Transformational Experience I Will Remember: What I will remember is how devoted the teachers are at CA. Every teacher at CA really believes in transforming students through learning, and I believe that many teachers did that for me, whether it was in Mr. Harvey’s economics class or Mr. Mills’s English class. Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I see myself introducing new economic public policy or teaching at a university.
Immediate Plans: Washington University in St. Louis, St. Louis, Mo., to study Economics and Political Science.
At CA since: Sixth Grade
Powerful Experience: One of my most powerful experiences was when my teachers allowed all the students to go help with the set-up of HOPE. Not only did it feel great to be part of an event that would help more than 2,000 people, but it was also nice to see the teachers getting involved and supporting the student-led program.
Community Impact Project: I helped support Casa de Paz in their mission to provide hospitality for immigrants released from detention, by donating supplies and gently used shoes and jackets which they needed during the pandemic.
Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Something I’ve learned at CA is the value of friendships. At the end of the day, the friendships I’ve created during my time here are what have made my experience memorable.

My data collection was used to provide universities with the tools to improve course offerings for students.
Transformational Experience I Will Remember:
In my Computer Science classes, Ms. Jans guided me through the many twists and turns of learning to code, building my own data structures, and thinking about the impacts of my programs. Without her, I would not have the profound love for Computer Science that I do today, and I never would have discovered the pure exhilaration of clicking “compile” and watching my program run.
Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I can imagine myself becoming an in-house design ethicist at a software company, or maybe a computer scientist, or maybe an entrepreneur at a tech-start up, or maybe a philosopher. I can also imagine myself doing a dozen other different things.
Immediate Plans: Stanford University, Stanford, Calif., to study Computer Science and Ethics.

This was so impactful, because I created relationships with my classmates that I never thought were possible. What made me happiest at CA: Playing sports at CA has made my time here beyond memorable. Transformational Experience I Will Remember: I learned patience and control during my four years of playing Ultimate Frisbee at CA.
Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I hope to be working on artificial intelligence or another aspect of computer science that lets me affect and have a say in the future of technology.
Immediate Plans: University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn., to study Computer Science, with a focus on Artificial Intelligence.
At CA since: Ninth Grade
Powerful Experience: I was truly moved by the Vietnam War class I took last year. Watching raw footage from the jungles of Vietnam and learning about the types of experiences soldiers went through impacted me in a way no other academic course had before, and I have no doubt that it will stick with me for years to come.
Community Impact Project: After we transitioned to virtual learning, I organized and showed a weekly collection of often adventure-focused short films through the Internet to bring the CA community together.
Transformational Experience I Will Remember:
I traveled with another CA Senior to the city of Kunming, China to teach English. We lived with a local family for more than two weeks and also traveled to the mountain village of Dali, hiking through the mountains between stunning historically and culturally significant sites.
Where I Hope to be in a Decade: My dream is to be designing (and hopefully driving) supercars and climbing in incredible places all around the world.
Immediate Plans: Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., to study Mechanical Engineering.
At CA since: Ninth Grade
Powerful Experience: During my Sophomore year, at a Varsity Boys Soccer Semi-Final game, the speakers weren’t working for the National Anthem. All the CA fans started singing it together, leading the crowd. It was a really cool moment. Even better, CA won the game in an overtime shoot-out when our goalie made an incredible save.
Community Impact Project: I volunteered with a Special Olympics Golf team, helping athletes learn and practice the game of golf.
Favorite CA Tradition: I really like going on Interim each year, because I make incredible memories. I have been able to go to Utah each of the last two years, hiking and climbing in Canyonlands. Each trip was unforgettable.
Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Coming as a Freshman from another school, I made my first and some of my best friends on the Golf Team. I will definitely remember the great times I had with the team for a long time.
What made me happiest at CA: The people at CA have really made my experience incredible. The friends I have made and the teachers I have had made my time at CA so enjoyable.
Immediate Plans: University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla., to study Computer Science.
The Colorado Academy Class of 2020 started the third trimester full of expectations for all the traditional Senior Spring events, including the annual Senior Journal photo session. Working with a professional photographer, they would have the opportunity to express their personality, interests, and unique experiences at CA in individual pictures. Along with so many other events, that photo session had to be canceled after the COVID-19 outbreak. But this class didn’t give up. They completed their coursework for the year on Zoom, which became their way of staying connected. And some of them also used Zoom to create individual at-home photo sessions which reflected their experiences at CA and, in some cases, their thoughts on life during a pandemic. So, in no particular order from members of the Class of 2020, enjoy the Zoom selfies, or “Zelfies.”
Creating curious, kind, courageous, and adventurous learners and leaders.
