12 WHAT TO DO IN MALIBU
one
day in malibu MAKING THE MOST OF THE COAST
With 21 miles of scenic coastline and natural beauty, Malibu offers countless options for FOMO — fear of missing out. You can't be everywhere, but from sunrise to sunset, here are some places you won't want to miss if you have just a day or two to enjoy the magic of Malibu.
SUNRISE
At the risk of making the Malibu Pier the best place to do just about everything, it really can't be overlooked that it is one of the best places to enjoy in Malibu, and the sunrise is no exception. With luck, the morning fog will fade, offering unfettered views of the eastern sun rising over the skyline of Los Angeles and reflecting golden light across the Pacific Ocean to the south of Malibu.
From the east side of the pier, the sunrise is unobstructed, with south-facing beachside homes catching the golden light like hundreds of twinkling waking eyes. From the west side of the pier, the iconic form with its many legs walking out into the Pacific Ocean provides additional character to the warming visuals. The west side also offers the vibrance of early-morning surfers catching waves or paddleboarders heading out.
If you want some elevation, Encinal Canyon Road on the west end of Malibu takes you closer to the sky with plenty of locations along the twists and turns to catch beautiful sunrise views.
If you want peace and quiet, but still want to be near the ocean for sunrise, head head over to the Point Dume Nature Preserve for a gentle hike along the cliffside dirt trails to the point.
BREAKFAST
The community of Malibu awakens with the traffic up and down PCH buzzing shortly after sunrise, and your hunger may begin rumbling. Before heading to the beach, you might want to pick up breakfast. If you want the beach-and-breakfast combo, head over to Paradise Cove Beach Café where you will get heaping platefuls on a secluded beach. Make sure to get your parking pass validated after breakfast before leaving the cafe, or if you plan on making Paradise Cove a habit, ask them about their "Keys to Paradise" program to get a lifetime pass — it's an real key to paradise. Tell them What to do in Malibu sent you.
If you want something nearer the pier, you have plenty of choices. Head right onto the pier for fresh breakfast at the Malibu Farm Pier Cafe for the opening table at 9 a.m. — only on Saturday and Sunday is the pier cafe open by 8 a.m. or come back by reservation for a farm-to-table dinner and a sunset at the Malibu Farm Restaurant.
Other favorites just around the corner include Kristy's, Marmalade Cafe and OLLO with signature dishes that will leave you talking about breakfast all day. Before you even get to the beach, you will have had to make some tough decisions.

BEACHES
Speaking of tough decisions, with 21 miles of coast, Malibu is dotted with amazing beaches where you can find the party, or find the solitude.
If you had breakfast at Paradise Cove Beach Café, you can just stay and make a day of it at Paradise Cove. Reserve lounges with umbrellas for couples or palapas for large groups up to 18 people and treat yourself to a luxurious escape at the beach and enjoy the secluded area. Get additional perks with "Keys to Paradise" from the cafe, get VIP service, and never pay for parking.
Or head west and find the sprawling, tranquil retreat of Leo Carrillo State Park, ideal for families and their furry companions. With generous, convenient parking adjacent to the beach, access to the calming shoreline is an easy jaunt.
Between North Beach and the Southern portion of Leo Carrillo beach lies the rocky Sequit Point. Here, children can explore fascinating sea caves and tide pools at low tide, discovering the mysteries of the ocean in a serene, natural setting under their parents' watchful eyes.
Stretching north from North Beach, the peaceful shoreline extends to Staircase Beach. This narrower stretch of sand is a bit more remote, offering a quiet haven that often attracts surfers seeking solace in the rhythm of the waves.
When the sun starts to head west, you may want to plan your sunset. There's one beach you'll see in pictures later, and kick yourself for missing out on it — El Matador State Beach. Tucked away beneath stunning cliffs that play peekaboo with the Pacific, El Matador is a showstopper. It's like Mother Nature's own rock concert, with huge rock formations popping up along the shore. Did you remember to fill your ice chest at Vintage Grocers or Whole Foods? Roll out a picnic blanket on the hilltop and watch for dolphin acrobatics from above, or if you're feeling adventurous, ride those gnarly waves. Just be ready to tackle a steep flight of stairs to get to the beach, but hey, it's like a mini-workout before the fun.
Don't miss out on exploring the secretive caves snuggled into the cliffs — it's like something out of a pirate story. If you're up for a stroll, you can enjoy your sunset heading to Lechuza Beach or San Juan
Leighton Beach from El Matador.
Let's just say, at El Matador State Beach, there's never a dull moment.
NIGHT CAP
To close out the evening, Carbon Beach Club at Malibu Beach Inn beckons as a charming balcony retreat. Gaze out over the
pulsating waves and lively marine life of the Pacific Ocean under the setting sun in the shadow of the Malibu Pier.
Drawing culinary inspiration from both the Pacific and Mediterranean coastlines, Carbon Beach Club is devoted to using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients from One Gun Ranch and neighborhood farmers' markets, meticulously crafted into delightful seasonal land and sea menus, with masterful beverages mixed at the bar with artisanal provisions. Complementing these creations is an exquisite wine list, curated from vintages across the globe — a selection that has garnered us the prestigious Wine Spectator® Award seven years running.
So, whether you opt to dine al fresco on the oceanfront terrace, suspended directly over the majestic Pacific Ocean, or choose to cozy up fireside under a soft blanket, the stunning ocean vistas will enhance your dining experience, offering the perfect capstone to an evening spent in this seaside paradise. And cap it all off with an evening walk on the beach under the pier. Covering 21 miles of paradise is too much for just one day, but we hope this gives you the information needed to craft a day you will never forget and one that will make your friends and family jealous as you share images throughout the journey. You can pack a hundred photos into this trip, and much more remains undiscovered in Malibu, so come back for more.

The Gold Emperor from Aventicum
Exhibition includes a unique portrait bust of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, made by hammering a single sheet of gold
Presents
his Meditations remain a highly-regarded text to this day — and a successful general who spent the later years of his reign fighting Germanic tribes on the northern border of the Roman Empire.
Weighing 3.5 pounds and hammered from a single sheet of metal, the hollow gold bust of the famous emperor was discovered in archaeological excavations at Aventicum in 1939. Workers exploring the site of a Roman religious precinct found the sculpture intact and in excellent condition, hidden in a sewage pipe.
The bust is thought to have been concealed during a time of crisis, perhaps an invasion by Germanic tribes in the late third century AD.
The emperor wears a breastplate decorated with a winged head of the Gorgon Medusa, symbolizing protection. It was likely attached to a wooden structure that could be carried in ceremonial processions.
Don’t miss The Gold Emperor from Aventicum presented by Getty, an exhibition showcasing a nearly life-size gold bust of the emperor Marcus Aurelius found at Aventicum — present-day Avenches, Switzerland, an ancient Roman city built on an earlier Celtic settlement.
The exhibition will be on view at the Getty Villa Museum from May 31, 2023, through January 29, 2024.
According to Timothy Potts, Maria Hummer-Tuttle and Robert Tuttle Director of the J. Paul Getty Museum, “The gold bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius is one of the most spectacular archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
“Together with other objects from ancient Gaul, this remarkable imperial portrait sheds light on the wealth and power of the Roman Empire in Northern Europe with an exceptional loan that stunningly complements the Museum’s own collections of Roman imperial art.”
The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius — who ruled AD 161–180 — was a highly respected ruler, a celebrated Stoic philosopher —
This exhibition presents the bust together with other objects from the site, including Roman marble inscriptions of Celtic civic leaders and the Celtic goddess Anechtlomara, a mosaic panel found in Aventicum, and two drawings by the Swiss artist Joseph-Emanuel Curty documenting in detail other mosaics discovered in the city in 1786. Together, these objects provide a view of the provincial capital and its Celtic heritage and show the importance of imperial imagery and veneration in the Roman territories beyond Rome.
The ancient works included in this exhibition are on loan from the Musée romains d’Avenches and the Musée cantonal d’archeologie et d’histoire, Switzerland.
“The focus of the exhibition will be on the gold bust, but it will also provide a view of a Roman provincial city, the establishment of a non-Roman, native elite class, and the importance of imperial imagery,” says Jeffrey Spier, Anissa and Paul John Balson II Senior Curator of Antiquities at the Getty Villa Museum who curated the exhibition with Jens Daehner, associate curator of antiquities.

HEROES GARDEN
The Thomas E. Burnett, Jr. Heroes Garden is a tranquil, inspiring place dedicated to honoring heroes from all walks of life. Located on the Pepperdine University campus in Malibu, California, this beautiful garden features several notable landmarks commemorating those who have served their country or made significant contributions to society.
Heroes Garden stands as a heartfelt tribute, a timeless symbol of the resilience and courage exhibited on September 11, 2001. This profound site is a permanent reminder of the fateful day when three airplanes tragically struck the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Among the brave hearts were Graziadio Business School alumnus Thomas E. Burnett, Jr. (MBA '95), who was on United Flight 93— the fourth hijacked plane that crashed into a Pennsylvania field. He,
WAVES OF FLAGS
The annual Waves of Flags display at Pepperdine University is an event held each year to commemorate the lives lost on September 11. Created by a group of students in 2008, 2,977 flags are arranged — each representing a person who died in the attack — across the university’s central mall and fountain courtyard. The array of flags serves as a powerful display in honor of the Americans who died, and provides an opportunity for individuals to pay their respects.
The annual display is more than just a memorial event; it is a chance for people from all backgrounds to remember those who were taken too soon due to senseless violence while also celebrating our nation’s strength against adversity and resilience during times of darkness. On the rolling hills of the university, the display covers the corner at PCH and Malibu Canyon Road, and walking the display with the breeze waving the thousands of flags in the sunset can be an overwhelming experience. arts.pepperdine.edu
along with other passengers, valiantly attempted to overpower the hijackers and avert the plane’s course away from its intended target, the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Their selfless act of heroism undoubtedly saved numerous lives. Heroes Garden was thoughtfully designed to honor Burnett’s sacrifice, along with that of so many others, on that unforgettable day when nearly 3,000 precious lives were lost. It stands as a serene space of reflection, inspiring us to remember and honor the indomitable spirit of humanity, even in times of adversity. We warmly invite you to visit and pay homage to these extraordinary heroes.
At the center of the Heroes Garden stands an impressive memorial wall with engraved names of brave individuals who were killed in action while serving in the United States Armed Forces during World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and other conflicts. The wall also pays tribute to graduates from Pepperdine University who lost their lives protecting our freedom overseas, as well as first responders and public servants whose ultimate sacrifice saved countless innocent lives here at home.
Nearby stands a statue titled “Rise Together,” which was created by sculptor Gary Tillery. This powerful piece depicts two hands reaching out towards each other — one representing America’s veterans and first responders while the other hand symbolizes civilians — in order to remind us that every individual has a part to play in helping make our nation strong again after tragedy strikes.

“Biodynamic®” means “life force” the force that stimulates change and progress, the very energy of life. We harness this life force by planting according to the Moon Calendar and we grow without the use of any chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides. We sow at the right time and we harvest at the right time, resulting in the tastiest seasonal produce bursting with flavour and nourishment. It is truly food as medicine. We harvest daily.
At One Gun Ranch we grow all our produce and revitalize the soil by using a Biodynamic compost we make following a technique
standardized by Rudolph Steiner the Father of Biodynamics with the manure from our beautiful cows and the heavenly guidance of our dear mentor Farmer Jack McAndrew. Good healthy soil is paramount for our health and the health of our world. Throughout history, the most important single influence on the prosperity and longevity of civilizations lies in their capacity to maintain and build the fertility of their soil. Vital soil provides a beneficial environment for plants to thrive, develop proper root structure, become resistant to pests and disease, and explode with color and flavor.

Beyond trails, Malibu is home to multiple parks. The conveniently located Malibu Bluffs Park offers stunning Pacific Ocean views, sports fields, a playground, and the Michael Landon Community Center. On the other hand, the peaceful Las Flores Creek Park, nestled a quarter-mile up Las Flores Canyon Road from Pacific Coast Highway, provides a tranquil retreat with a trail, picnic tables, and a playground. It also hosts 45 varieties of native plant species.
Trancas Canyon Park is unique as Malibu's first and only off-leash dog park, ideal for pets to socialize and play. Other tranquil spots include Legacy Park, an outdoor learning center located in the heart of Malibu, and Escondido Canyon Park, which houses one of California's top ten waterfalls. Lastly, Point Dume Natural Preserve, a tranquil gem offering awe-inspiring views, is an excellent spot for observing the migration of gray whales.

Topanga Canyon A Day Trip to
Topanga Canyon, located in the Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California, is a stunning destination that offers visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Known for its breathtaking natural beauty, unique culture, and diverse range of activities, Topanga Canyon is the perfect place for those looking for a relaxing and memorable experience.
Our journey will begin at the intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Topanga Canyon Boulevard (State Highway 27) in the West San Fernando Valley. Head due south on Hwy. 27. As you climb into the Santa Monica Mountains, the urban environment quickly fades, as you will be immersed with a green, peaceful embrace of these lush mountains. As you wind the serpentine curves, you’ll have a final and spectacular view of the valley at the Top of Topanga Overlook.
Turn back south on Topanga Canyon Boulevard and immediately drop into Topanga Canyon. Along the way, you pass several trailheads starting with Summit Valley Park, which connects to a vast web of noteworthy hiking and riding trails suitable for all levels of fitness. You’ll soon pass a lovely wedding venue called the 1909 and the ever popular Café 27. Hidden out of sight is Blackberry Farm at Kelly Gulch. The nine-acre farm produces wool from their Pylori Goats and has been the location of over 200 television and movie shoots. Most recently, it was the family cabin featured in "This Is Us".
Continuing down the canyon, you’ll pass Topanga Living Café, and hidden from sight is Eli’s Bees which sells Topanga-origin honey online at elisbees.com. Soon you’ll see the turn-off for the Topanga
Community Center. The Center is exactly that, the place that hosts numerous events and activities, including Topanga Days, swap meets, a chili cook-off, Food Truck Fridays, seasonal events, and more. The Center has a ball field, playground, and scheduled activities for all ages and interests. Across Highway 27, you’ll find the celebrated Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum. For 50 years, the theater has been home to plays, concerts, and educational events.
Drive slowly as you’ll soon come to The Great Wall of Topanga This 50-foot stretch of retaining wall is festooned with a myriad of eclectic art pieces by owner and artist Rick Denman that puts a smile on every face that passes.
Further on, Entrada Road is the entrance to Topanga State Park: 10,000 acres of trails, the largest Urban Wildland in the western US, a green jewel in a network of state, county, and parks managed by Mountains Recreation Conservation Authority. There are many hiking, biking, and riding opportunities. Trippet Ranch is the headquarters and starting point for park adventures and Sunday docent-led tours. Just before the Entrada turn off, you’ll pass the infamous Backbone Trail crossing, which traverses 67 miles of the Santa Monica Mountains.
Soon you’ll be in the heart of Topanga, where Old Topanga Canyon Road ends at Hwy. 27. One of the most popular attractions in Topanga Canyon is its shopping scene. The area is home to a variety of unique shops and boutiques that offer everything from handcrafted jewelry and clothing to vintage finds and one-of-a-kind home decor. Some of the most popular shopping destinations in the area include Topanga Homegrown and Alkemie Road, which offers
72 WHAT TO DO IN MALIBU
a wide range of handcrafted jewelry and finely curated items. Pine Tree Circle is the center that holds Water Lily Café, Canyon Gourmet, and Canyon Bistro, among several other attractive stores. Next to Pine Tree Circle, you’ll find Hidden Treasures, a vintage clothing store that has been a fixture in the community for decades. Just across the safe pedestrian crossing is The Topanga General Store, The Courtyard, and several other shops and restaurants.
Old Topanga Canyon Road is a less traveled route that eventually leads to Calabasas. Just as you get on the Old Topanga, you’ll see the jewel that is Inn Of The Seventh Ray. The Inn was founded by Lucile “Lucy” Yaney and her husband in the mid-1970s. Read more about the inn in our feature article.
About a mile further down the canyon on 27 is a quaint area called Fernwood, home of Café Mimosa, Country Natural Food, and Fernwood Market. A short drive down the canyon, you’ll see Topanga Lumber, and across the highway is a jewel of the canyon — Jalan-Jalan Imports and Topanga Rocks at Owl Falls, our other featured businesses in our Topanga Guide. Read more about Jalan-Jalan and Topanga Rocks in our feature article.
The completion of our 12-mile journey ends at Rosenthal Wine Bar & Patio across Pacific Coast Highway from Topanga State Beach. Rosenthal has a lovely variety of wines complimented with small plates, food trucks, and either live music or DJ. Topanga Guide

INN OF THE SEVENTH RAY
Elegant Energy in Topanga
Topanga Canyon is blessed to be the home to the Inn of the Seventh Ray. Frequently cited as the most romantic restaurant in Los Angeles, this is a well earned and often repeated accolade. Founded in the early 1970s by Lucile ‘Lucy’ Yaney and her husband, Dr. Ralph Yaney.
The couple discovered the property that offer numerous stories. Located at the convergence of Topanga Creek and Old Topanga Creek, it may have been a meeting place of the indigenous Chumash natives. In the 1930s, evangelist, Aimee Semple McPherson built a personal retreat complete with a small church for worship. Later the property was used as a feed store; a gas station was the home of the local junkyard when Lucy found it. But the energy was so strong that Lucy was struck with the inspiration that would become the Inn of the Seventh Ray.
Lucy and her husband purchased the property and began to restore it to its natural beautiful state. Lucy has always felt a deep connection with the pure energy that surrounds this ethereal wooded enclave. Establishing a retreat and restaurant reflecting Yaney’s healthy lifestyle based on simple, locally sourced organic foods. The menu today still follows their philosophy and has been elevated by talented and passionate Chef & Co-Owner Brad Miller.
Brad’s passion began like so many great chefs, beside his grandmother in the kitchen as a child. His passion carried him through a Cordon Bleu program in Scottsdale, Arizona. Working his way up the culinary food chain to become the Master Chef of the Inn. Brad is well known in culinary media, appearing on several notable television shows. At his side is another culinary star, Executive Chef Gabriel Hatton. The trifecta of talent is complete with Sommeliers, Stephen Jordan, who continually seeks wines to pair perfectly with the chef’s magical flavors.
The setting of the Inn embraces the canyon oaks, serenaded by the flowing creek, which creates a serenity of life and love. Be it a romantic date, a special celebration, or a wedding, the Inn provides charing memories that last a lifetime. The team of professionals at the Inn makes everything from date night to a once-in-a-lifetime wedding flawless.
Before you leave the Inn, stop in The Cellar Wine Shop to take home some of Mr. Jordan’s liquid magic to extend and share the Inn of the Seventh Ray experience with family and friends. Wine Spectator gave the Inn the Award of Excellence in 2022, expressing the elevated nature of Mr. Jordan’s inventory.
Lunch, brunch, dinner, dessert, or special holiday meals are offered daily. Online reservations are the most convenient method to pick your date to visit the Inn. You can also email reservations@ innoftheseventhray or call 310-455-1311 to reserve your place at the Inn. The Inn is located just off Topanga Canyon Boulevard (CA State Hwy 27) at 128 Old Topanga Canyon Road.

JALAN JALAN IMPORTS
A Jewel in the Canyon
On a recent spring drive through Topanga Canyon, we made a most memorable stop. Like historic explorers on a journey of discovery, we came upon the home of Jalan Jalan Imports and Topanga Rocks, boutique importers of crystals and Balinese design elements. As we meandered through the property, we were transported to a different time and space. The tapestry of Topanga is so rich, but this significant piece of the Topanga mosaic made it richer yet. We soon witnessed Owl Falls, a natural three-story waterfall spilling into what can be described as a sanctuary setting. It was both sublime and surreal.
Owner and curator Brian Gibson, a resident of Topanga since 1997, has focused on his love and passion for collecting interesting design elements from mysterious corners of Bali, Java, and Sumatra. Brian’s Jalan focus is on hand-chiseled statuary and exotic teak furniture intended as focal points for gardens and private sanctuaries of his many clients. Although some pieces are set indoors, they thrive in outdoor settings aging with the patina of natural elements. Moisture, mosses, sunlight, and time all play a part in their journey. These are not inanimate objects but living things exuding an aura of peace and serenity.
On a more intimate scale is Topanga Rocks, which strives to offer the most diverse collection of crystals and rocks in the L. A. area. The selection and variety of crystals and other pieces are filled with natural wonders. The store’s interior is beautifully lit and displayed like a kaleidoscope of color and vibration. Topanga Rocks has curated a wonderful collection of magnificent crystals, art, jewelry, and unique gifts. This is surely one of the most interesting shopping experiences Los Angeles has to offer.
