NORTH COUNTY — The 5th Annual Showdown Cornhole Tournament sponsored by the City of Atascadero, presented by Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club of Atascadero, kicked off on the event on Friday, Sept. 17, at the Ravine Waterpark in Paso Robles and then wrapped up on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Sunken Gardens in Atascadero. There were 64 teams and 160 participants in this year’s two-day tournament, with approximately 300 spectators cheering on the contenders. The Cornhole participants attending the event were from San Luis Obispo County, San Diego, the Bay Area, and the Central Valley. Friday’s event consisted of an 8-team Round Robin Toss at the Ravine’s miniature golf course, in which 16 of the 64 teams competed. The main Showdown followed on Saturday at the Sunken Gardens, where the 8-Team Round Robin Toss took place in the morning before a break for lunch. Attendees enjoyed music from Deja-vu Band and DJ Manuel Medina with Medina Light Show & Designs and burgers from the Kiwanis Club of Atascadero, and drinks and coffee from Lighthouse Coffee and Boy Scout Troop 51. After lunch, the teams proceeded to the finals. Eight teams went home with cash prizes, and teammates Paul (Eric) Cruz and John Fent of Fresno took first place in the top-tier “A” Bracket. Teammates Daniel Soto and Bill Van Horbek of Paso Robles placed first in the 2nd-tier “B” Bracket. In addition to the cornhole competition, there was a costume contest as well. The Schuck Gang— who placed 4th in the “A” Bracket— consisting of Scott Tirre and Jacob Ferguson of Nipomo won first place for their tiger-striped pajama pants CONTINUED ON PAGE A15

North County Pilates Celebrates 15 Years Anniversary celebration on Oct. 8 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. By CAMILLE DeVAUL camille@pasoroblespress.com

ATASCADERO — On Oct. 6, North County Pilates (NCP) will celebrate 15 years of helping their clients feel their best. Owner and Pilates instructor Melissa Barton fell in love with Pilates over 15 years ago when she found it relieved her chronic pain from an injury when she was a teenager. Barton has combined her Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from Cal Poly with training from the prestigious BASI Pilates training with Karen Clippinger at Cal State Long Beach. Needless to say, she knows how the body works, and she knows how to help her clients get their movement back. “I love being able to see people get back into all the things that they’ve always loved doing,” Barton shared. She explains Pilates is an effective workout that helps clients live pain-free, whether that pain comes from new or previous injuries like herself or

SENIOR LIVING

PASO ROBLES — It is the final countdown to Paso Robles Pioneer Day. Each year Paso Robles celebrates Pioneer Day on the first Saturday of October with a bean feed, parade, and other activities—always adhering to the time-old “leave your pocketbook at home” motto. On Oct. 12, 1931, Paso Robles businesses came together for the first time to celebrate and give thanks to their farmers and ranch-

ers for what became the first annual Pioneer Day Parade. And now, 91 years later, Paso Roblans will still come together on the second Saturday of October to support their community. Each year, Pioneer day kicks off with a parade. You can see antique tractors and equipment, horsedrawn wagons, marching bands, mounted equestrian groups, youth and church groups, floats, vintage cars, fire engines, and more heading towards the park. Unfortunately, what you won’t see this year are the antique harvesters. With parklets still in place, the big ‘ole machinery just won’t be able to squeeze through! CONTINUED ON PAGE A15
