State passes incentive package to accelerate the safe return to in-person instruction By HAYLEY MATTSON hayley@pasoroblespress.com SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — Last Wednesday, San Luis Obispo County moved from the Purple Tier to the Red Tier of the State’s “Blueprint for a Safer Economy.”

The State’s Blueprint allows for counties in the Red Tier to re-open a degree of indoor operations and resume certain activities. To re-open local businesses, they must follow all State guidance for their industry and self-certify that they are ready to re-open safely. “This is a positive step in the right direc-
tion for our community, and I’m happy that we’re able to re-open more parts of our community,” Dr. Penny Borenstein, San Luis Obispo County Health Officer, explained in a released statement. “But we cannot take this gift for granted. We must remain vigilant as we move forward so that we do not undo this good work.”
This news comes almost a year after the nation declared a State of Emergency on Mar. 13, 2020, which enabled FEMA to operate as a vehicle to deliver virus response funds to state and local governments. Governor Gavin Newsom signed an execCONTINUED ON PAGE A15
COMMUNITY SERVICE
CELEBRATION
Shandon High School Seniors Enjoy a ‘Senior Day’ Bonfire in Cayucos After Repainting the Shandon ‘S’ By CAMILLE DeVAUL camille@pasoroblespress.com SHANDON — On Thursday, Feb. 25, Shandon High School teachers brought 19 students to the Shandon ‘S’ to repaint and clean up the area. The High School students are required to fulfill 20 hours of community service each year, which amounts to 80 hours of service by their senior year. “The staff was noticing that the seniors were struggling with it being their senior year and being in COVID... it’s difficult,” said Superintendent Dr. Kristina Benson. Like many students throughout the country, students have missed out on all the traditional senior activities. “When we were at the ‘S’ kids were wearing their masks, they were maintaining social distance, but we had the music going, and they were having a good time just being with each other, which they haven’t had an opportunity to do too much,” said Benson. After finishing their work at the ‘S’, the teachers took 16 of the Shan-

bonfire on the beach. At 5 p.m., more school staff from Shandon came and read affirmations and letters to their students. Benson read Dr. Suess’s ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go’ and a poem on never giving up. Many students have been struggling with distance learning, but grades and homework were not a main concern during the bonfire. “There was very little discussion about grades and academics. It was more discussions about them as people,” Benson said. “We had some seniors that wished to talk... they shared the struggles of their senior year... and how they were so happy that the staff cared about them more than just academics,” said Benson. Shandon students were able to bond with fellow classmates and also rebuild a connection with their teachers. Former Paso Robles City Planner Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with Bagpipe Tour By CAMILLE DeVAUL camille@pasoroblespress.com PASO ROBLES — If you hear the distinctive sound of bagpipes in the next week, don’t worry, you haven’t stepped through some standing stones and been transported to Scotland. Although, I rather think I would be okay with that. In the weeks leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, Ed Gallagher can be heard throughout Paso Robles playing traditional Irish tunes for the second year in a row. CONTINUED ON PAGE A15
