On Dec. 3, local newscasts played the video of a coyote that tried to carry away a toddler from the sidewalk of her Woodland Hills home while her father was unloading the car. The father chased it away. That video was played hundreds of times by every TV station over a period of several days.

Judging by the posts on social media here in Malibu since then, people were scared. It seemed like every local coyote sighting was posted, along with photos and videos.

Due to overwhelming public pressure, officials captured the offending Woodland Hills coyote on Dec. 9 and later euthanized it after DNA identification.

So, how does this kind of scenario happen, and what can be done to prevent it? Coyotes exist everywhere in our local area.

“It was a perfect storm,” said Rebecca Dmytryk, Malibu native and original founder of the California

less than a remarkable adventure. We take comfort in the knowledge that his adventure will live on in the many beautiful homes that he designed, in his inventions and in his 1957 Mercedes 190SL that he converted to be 100 percent electric. He will live on in those inspired by his work and in the ocean and environment that will

forever be linked with his spirit, and in our family who will carry on his legacy.

On a beautiful sunny and crisp November Saturday, our family hosted a celebration of life for Dad, surrounded by family and close friends at our family house, the Sandcastle. It was a special day of remembering his unique and

original character, his eccentricities, his wild sense of humor, and the sage-like wisdom that he shared with everyone who was lucky enough to be in his presence. My brothers, Jake Gesner and Casey Dolan, spoke from the heart about the impact he had on them, and the world.

His three grandsons, Finn,

Rory, and Tuck Gesner, also shared stories that brought both laughter and reflection on the profound influence he passed down to them over the last 25 years of their lives. Dad was a traditional Waterman in every sense of the word. He spent most of his life in the ocean surfing, waterskiing, fishing, and

Despite the easy access to online shopping, shoppers headed to Malibu to purchase their lastminute Christmas gifts at its main shopping destinations, Malibu Country Mart on Cross Creek Road and Trancas Country Market. With no malls in the area, these outdoor centers provide a less-hectic shopping experience.

While the Malibu Pier is known to be an area that is a

must-see when visiting due to all the holiday activities, the growing businesses around town have become a “go to” destination as well.

In addition to Malibu’s many beaches and restaurants, Malibu has an array of retail clothing and jewelry boutiques, from high-end couture to sustainable fashion such as Outerknown in Malibu Country Mart. The retail store recently opened this year and is located in Suite 9 on Cross Creek Road.

The husband-and-wife owners of the restaurant, Daniella Hunter and Charlie Stuart Gay, are back in Tulum, Mexico, where they own and operate the Sanara Tulum Hotel and the original Real Coconut restaurant. The Malibu restaurant was their first attempt at expansion.

The couple released a statement on social media in late October.

“It is with an open yet heavy

heart that I write today to you that our Malibu Resturaunt is facing closure in November,” the couple wrote on social media. “Daniella and I embarked in Malibu to help nourish you and the community while nurturing our world ... It has been one of the honors of my life to serve you.”

Hunter continued to explain the struggles of building, maintaining, and operating a food establishment during the pandemic.

“You may be aware of the

conscious commitments we made with support from our friends to build and open during COVID,” the post continued. “Our commitment in large part comes from our collective sense that the world and our communities would become increasingly affected by the pressure around food production, supply chains and how we act around the asset of water. These basic factos are materializing around the planet today and they are impacting all of us. However,

maintainting our USA business has come at much cost and we are now simply not able to maintain the personal financial flow to sustain the obligations we have. We see a path to growth for the brand and Malibu has been a superb test with great appreciation from the community. Like any business if we are unable to cover costs then the issue needs to be addressed. To have to close is a very sad outcome for many especially as there is much

As we steady ourselves for the beginning of a new year that promises to test our patience further with a triple dose of pandemic (COVID/Flu/ RSV, which is short for respiratory syncytial virus) and the potential return of masking and/or other measures, let us not forget to look at life and its challenges from the standpoint of the beautiful surroundings in which we live. Many individuals have approached me and complimented the thought-provoking articles published on a biweekly basis in The Malibu Times under the sideby-side column “From the Left/ From the Right.” As we enter a new year in what can only be described as trying times, let us join together in wishing everyone a very Happy Holiday season and a resurgent new year.

I have spent my entire professional career — four decades — in public service. I have worked for two presidential administrations, two U.S. Senators, the U.S. Senate Budget Committee, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, two prominent governors, have written two books on public policy, authored over 800 op-ed pieces for prominent newspapers, including over 300 for Huffington Post, delivered over 100 presentations on climate change as one of the first of Al Gore’s climate messengers, appeared on numerous television talk shows, including “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” taught American government at Temple University and public policy at Santa Monica College.

The

I present “From the Left” and my writing partner Don Schmitz presents “From the Right.” We rarely agree beyond the timely topics we choose, but since hope springs eternal and since comity is in short supply these days, we decided several years ago to at least give it a try. We both thought it would be a nice touch in a divided world to present our respective bona fides for tackling such a difficult task in this year’s closing article and hope you find our distinctly different backgrounds interesting.

We approach each topic with respect for and tolerance of opposing viewpoints, and sometimes we actually come very close to a midpoint that passes for compromise. The reader should know that we come together on the topic and then do not see what the other has written until after it is printed. Thus, we strongly adhere to the principle that no personal attacks are allowed to inject substantive argumentation with toxic recrimination. This, hopefully, allows for civil discourse that is grounded in logic and provokes thought.

Healthy debate may rarely change one’s opinion, but it does allow for a degree of respect for opposing viewpoints that challenge our inherent biases. This is a hallmark for democracy, it provokes different perspectives and encourages compromise. While the current political environment certainly offers a challenge, moderation usually prevails and continuity of governance provides a roadmap for progress. Indeed, our Constitution has always been viewed as a living document, one that incrementally bestows enhancement of benefits on a diverse society. That is the es-

I represented my undergraduate university as an intern in the Georgia State Legislature, was a teaching fellow at Temple University, where I received my Master’s in public administration, was selected as one of 50 individuals in Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government Program for Senior Managers in Government (1995), and was one of 55 individuals representing over 40 countries at Harvard’s Environment Economics and Policy Analysis Workshop (1997). I was also one of seven individuals chosen to serve as a participant observer at the U.S. Army War College (2007).

I have been very active in local politics, both in Santa Monica and Malibu. Currently, I am a Malibu Public Works commissioner, a member of the Community Emergency Response Team, VP of the Malibu Democratic Club, and a member of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party Central Committee. I have run for Malibu City Council on two occasions and spent a year as chairman of the Adamson House Foundation.

I have worked on the podium of the Democratic National Convention in 10 of the last 13 conventions.

I was married and am blessed with two children. My ex-wife passed away from complications with lupus and multiple sclerosis, and I raised my two sons as a single father.

I have read and studied history and public administration and attempted to exercise a degree of realism into problem solving that pushes the envelope without sacrificing the good in search of the perfect.

The divisive nature of the current political and ideological spectrum is threatening to take our society back in time rather than reaching for the stars that promise a better day for as many people as possible. The key to salvaging a society growing rather than deteriorating is to open as many lines of communication as possible. That is what our columns are intended to do. Thanks for listening and for the opportunity for us to help engage in thoughtful dialogue.

Iremember when Lance called me and said “Don, I’ve observed you in many debates, and you don’t burn people down; you disagree respectfully. Our country has lost the essential ability to politically debate topics and compromise, and we need to do something about it.”

So it began, a classic liberal, and a libertarian conservative, fostering discussion and civil discourse on the topics of the day. Based upon the letters, texts and phone calls, our approach is warmly received. Sure, there are some haters and angry insults, but they are the minority. Telling is that so many who contact me do so quietly and privately, because they are intimidated and afraid.

Since when did Americans tiptoe around worried about social, workplace, or even physical retribution? Since boycotts, lawsuits, public shunning, protests, vandalism, and even murder became prevalent tools of political extremists. This has happened periodically throughout American history, and it has always taken the courage of our people to stand up to the bullying and intimidation.

More insidious today is the level of intimidation and control, illustrated last week by the new master list of proposed speech guidelines at Stanford University, which would make any normal person as an American feel blacklisted. BTW, you can’t say “master list,”

Hope you all have a wonderful and safe New Years!

“normal,” “American,” or “blacklisted” as someone might be triggered (can’t say “trigger warning” either). America is becoming a nation of snowflakes and victims, so of course, a huge percentage of us are feeling oppressed and wounded. This mantra is constantly beat into the psyche of our people. Exacerbating this hypersensitivity is the inevitable backlash, whereupon mainstream folks either cower, or angry with the intimidation, lash out with truly insulting words or behavior. The cycle continues, feeding on itself, and its trajectory is downward.

Lance and I both remember fondly the historically intense debates between Democrats and Republicans over policies, but they were debates amongst colleagues, exemplified by Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neil during the 1980s going out and having a beer together as friends after a month of hard-hitting debate over the budget. It was big news in the 1990s when political adviser Dick Morris revealed that President Bill Clinton screamed at him that presidential candidate Republican Bob Dole was “evil” because he disagreed on welfare spending. That wouldn’t be news today, as politicians on the left and right openly and regularly berate political opponents and call them amoral. In fact, many politicians are considered soft by their constituents and can’t win their primary unless they vigorously attack. They are giving us exactly what we are demanding in this new no-holdsbarred world. Hypersensitivity coupled with abrasively toxic rhetoric is an explosively unstable social and political climate, one which results in ruined personal relationships, divided communities, burning police stations, and courthouses, and a riot in our capital.

I can disagree on social and political issues and still respect someone and be good friends. The caveat to this, of course, is when

people or organizations try to take away my personal rights or harm this country I love. That is the difference between traditional liberal Democrats, who love and cherish this country and respect their fellow citizens, and the leftists who have seized so much power, hate this country, and will not hesitate to try and destroy those who disagree with their agenda. Living here in Southern California many, if not most of my friends are Democrats. They are moral, hardworking, intelligent, spiritual, caring people who deeply love America. In private they express to me their dismay over the radical leftists who assert we are an inherently evil country, but they are intimidated by them.

Similarly, but to a lesser degree, Republicans also struggle with the internal pressure to take a hard line, by those within their party who would lump all Democrats and liberals into that socialist hate-America crowd. Sadly, we are losing this fight for the middle. A USA TODAY poll in 2019 found 65 percent of Americans said it was “very important to reduce divisiveness,” whereupon a poll this year found that number had dropped to 48 percent.

I’m not wired to bow to pressure from anyone or organization and remain firm in my convictions about our exceptional country and democratic republic. My God-given rights are inalienable, and I will vigorously defend them for myself and posterity, but we must differentiate between the true enemies, foreign and domestic, and our fellow countrymen that simply have a different opinion on how we maintain and nurture this beautiful country. Let a little love back into your heart, recognize the good people all around you, and remember that the lunatic fringe seeks to divide us. Stand up, speak out, and resist them. Liberal Lance is my partner on making this stand, and I’m proud to call him my friend.

Join the organic waste recycling workshop and get a free kitchen scraps caddy on Jan. 7

Community members can learn about the importance of, and how to successfully participate in, the city’s Organic Waste Recycling Program by joining the virtual workshop on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. Additional workshops are scheduled for Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 15 and April 19. The Organic Waste Recycling Program is an important way that Malibu can fulfill its commitment as a community to be part of the efforts to address climate change and protect the environment. The link for the event is posted on the website. Attendees will receive a free kitchen scraps collection caddy (limit one per household). The 1.9-gallon, dishwasher-safe caddies are easy to fill, carry, empty, and clean, offering a convenient way to collect food scraps to be recycled. For more information about the program and to register for a workshop, visit the Organic Recycling webpage (malibucity. org/Organics). For additional guidance on the organics recycling program, review the city’s free online Zero Waste Guide (malibucity.org/HomeZeroWasteGuide).

More Beacon Boxes installed to assist out of town firefighters

The city continues to install Beacon Boxes, which include maps and thumb drives with locations of fire hydrants, swimming

pools and other valuable local information, at strategic locations throughout the city in order to assist out-of-area firefighters responding in Malibu. This week the Fire Safety Liaisons and Public Works staff installed the second batch of 10 boxes at locations from Corral Canyon to Paradise Cove. After the 2018 Woolsey Fire, the city contracted with Flame Mapper to purchase 47 Beacon Boxes.

Community volunteers needed for the 2023 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count

Community members can register now to volunteer for the Los Angeles Homeless Authority’s (LAHSA) 2023 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count taking place in Malibu on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023. Every year, thousands of volunteers help conduct the Homeless Count, an annual census of people experiencing homelessness across Los Angeles County to inform homelessness policy decisions and better direct resources to be able to address the homelessness crisis. Learn more and sign up to volunteer on the LAHSA website (theycountwillyou.org). For further questions, contact Public Safety Liaison Luis Flores at (310) 456-2489, ext. 236, or lflores@malibucity.org.

Wildfire conditions update

Live Fuel Moisture (LFM) and Conditions: LFM is up to 74 percent as of Dec. 1, a significant improvement from 56 percent on Oct. 27.

LFM can be as high as 200 percent, while 60 percent and below is considered critical for hazardous fire conditions. As part of continuous wildfire preparedness, the city tracks LFM as well as relative humidity, temperature, and dead fuel moisture to determine fire conditions for Malibu. The LFM is the percentage of water content to dry matter in live vegetation. The Los Angeles County Fire Department Forestry Division conducts sampling of chamise (Adenostoma Fasciculatum), a primary chaparral plant species, approximately every two weeks and posts the results on their website (fire.lacounty.gov/ fire-weather-danger/).

Large wildfires can still occur with LFM levels of 60 percent to 80 percent. Above 80 percent, wildfires are unlikely to grow large and spread quickly as long-range spotting is greatly diminished due to new grass growing in, and fuel beds being greener and containing more moisture that must be vaporized before the fuels will ignite. No rain is expected through Dec. 29, and at least one Santa Ana wind event is forecast before the end of the year. Large wildfires that threaten lives and properties are still possible, and hazardous fire conditions and strong Santa Ana winds have occurred well into January. See detailed weather information at weather.gov.

The city has continued to ensure staff readiness during peak wildfire season by setting up the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during nights and weekends when the National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings. In addition to enabling the EOC operations to start immediately, it also trains the staff to be ready to activate and operate the EOC during a wildfire or other disaster. Additionally, the Public Safety Department has been conducting trainings to ensure staff is ready to use to use the city’s Everbridge Disaster Notifications System in case of a disaster requiring evacuations. To sign up for the city’s Disaster Notification System, visit member.everbridge. net/453003085613099/login. To sign up for lower-level emergency, traffic, weather and utility alerts by text and email, visit malibucity. org/list.aspx and scroll down to “Alert Center.”

the Malibu Farmers Market. The City of Malibu Planning Department posts a weekly report of approved event permits on the website.

In order for members of the public to be informed of pending event permit applications and to provide an additional opportunity for public input, the city has changed the Event Permit Report format to include all event permit applications deemed complete for review for consistency and compliance with the requirements of the Malibu Municipal Code and the Planning Director’s action on each application. The updated Event Permit Report has been posted to the city’s website. To

sign up to receive an email or text message when an updated Event Permit Report is posted, visit the e-notifications page (scroll down to the “Special Event Permit Report” category).

Holiday hours listed for City Hall, Senior Center, others

Malibu City Hall and Senior Center; Closed New Year’s Eve (observed) Friday, Dec. 30 at 11:30 a.m.; New Year’s Day (observed) all day Monday, Jan. 2. Park hours: Open regular hours daily, 8 a.m. to sunset.

Community members are encouraged to install a KnoxBox emergency key system to enable Sheriff’s deputies to access unstaffed gates to residential properties to ensure rapid law enforcement access in case of emergencies. To effectively and efficiently respond to emergency calls, Deputies need to be able to access all residential and commercial properties, including gated communities. The KnoxBox system is separate from the system used by the LA County Fire Department.

A Knox Master Key is given exclusively to deputies. Community members can buy a KnoxBox online. Once the purchase is made, the Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station is notified, and a deputy will help verify access following its installation by a locksmith. For more information, contact Public Safety Liaison Luis Flores at (310) 456-2489, ext. 236, or lflores@malibucity.org.

2023 building codes go into effect Jan. 1

The new 2023 Los Angeles County Building Codes go into effect Sunday, Jan. 1. The city’s permit technicians will review online submittals on Tuesday, Jan. 3, to determine which code cycle will apply to the project submittals. For a project to be reviewed under the 2020 County of Los Angeles Codes, all required documents must have been provided by the deadline on Saturday, Dec. 31, at midnight (submittals and payments are time stamped).

All projects submitted on or after Jan. 1, or those that are incomplete by the deadline, will be reviewed under the 2023 codes. Applicants are urged not to wait and to request their Building Safety plan review and permits now. Building Safety submittal requirements are listed on the webpage.

our Public Safety Team has some safety tips for the community. A Christmas tree can go from a delightful household holiday symbol to a potential starting point of a dangerous house fire as it becomes dry and flammable, so don’t wait too long to dispose of your holiday tree. Real Coconut Kitchen promotes being a conscious kitchen. Conscious about providing a menu that is plantfocused, and free of gluten, grain, and dairy. It only chooses organically grown produce, pasture-raised eggs, chicken and seafood from local farmers and fisherman.

The restaurant also hosted musical and meditation gatherings for artists to host and perform, such as singer/ songwriter Annie Bosko and musician Colin Martin ealier this year.

The statement ended with, “Daniella and I have always been open to a great operator and a team coming in to take over what we have been activating, to bring in the

resources and management expertise to get behind and grow our Conscious Kitchen, Real Coconut brand in Los Angeles and the USA.”

Steve Soboroff of Soboroff Partners, owners and leasing agents for the center, confirmed that Real Coconut “isn’t there anymore.”

“They’re continuing their Tulum operation and consolidating their businesses there,” Soboroff added.

”We have released the space to a spectacular, exciting, established, family-oriented restaurant,” which is expected to be open sometime this summer. “It’ll be phenomenal, the most exciting thing to hit Malibu in a while, but we just can’t tell you the name yet.”

The Real Coconut Kitchen has two other locations: in Tulcum Beach and Tulum Pueblo.

Wildlife Center. She was brought to Woodland Hills shortly after the coyote incident by a wildlife coalition in order to investigate why the coyotes in that city were going after people.

It all started when a number of homeless people living in their cars in an area near the intersection of Burbank Blvd. and Shoup Avenue started hand-feeding the local coyotes “for months on end,” Dmytryk said. The animals became very accustomed to people and getting food from people.

The coyotes became such a “problem” that a nearby church, the Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, hired a trapper to come in. Dmytryk said they were not using humane traps—they were using snare traps, which capture the animal by the neck or leg. This kind of trapping is illegal without special written consent from officials, and Dmytryk wasn’t sure if the church had obtained permission to do this or not. Nevertheless, she knows of at least one coyote that was killed in the process and said there were probably more.

One of the problems with killing coyotes is that they tend to be the “elders” of the coyote pack – the ones who would teach the young coyotes how to live and how to stay away from humans. Once they’re dead, the young members of the pack have no good examples to follow, in addition to being orphaned.

The last element of the “perfect storm” was the fact that there was a huge construction site in the same area— near the homeless people, the church doing the trapping, and the home of the toddler that the coyote tried to grab.

“The workers at this construction site were leaving all kinds of leftover food behind,” Dmytryk observed – half-eaten sandwiches,

cookies, chicken bones, etc. And a lot of the leftover food was inside big plastic bags that the coyotes learned to pick up and carry off to a safe place where they could eat it. The coyotes learned that the construction site was a place where they could find food.

Dmytryk theorizes that the toddler, who looked like a small round ball of pink wearing a puffy winter coat and hat, was mistaken for a plastic garbage bag of food scraps by the coyote. The coyote was not “attacking” the little girl so much as trying to drag off what it thought was a bag of food before realizing it was too heavy. From the video, it’s difficult to tell that the bundled-up two-year-old was even a person.

“This was 100 percent preventable,” said Dmytryk. “It’s not that coyotes lose their fear of humans, but they do increase their tolerance of us when they can get food rewards, including cat food that people put out. Coyotes need to be consistently chased off and shooed away.”

“Scaring is caring,” she emphasized. “When they come into our territory, we have to do something to scare them and make them stay farther away from us —teach them to stay at a respectful distance.”

Dmytryk is helping to develop a progressive coyote response plan to present to the Los Angeles City Council, which includes a directive to the City of Los Angeles Animal Services to receive training in best practices when called about coyotes.

“All communities need a progressive formal policy about how to respond to coyotes.”

One of her favorite resources for coyote information is the website for “Coyote Watch Canada.”

Malibu has a statement on how to co-exist with coyotes but nothing specifically on the city’s response to them.

Malibu Life

Local woman celebrates her 100th birthday

Malibu

On the eve of turning 100 years old, Winifred Wilson is an inspiration to her granddaughter and many family members and friends. The family matriarch, who recently moved to Malibu to be near her closest relatives, lives in a home with four generations of women. Wilson, her daughter, granddaughter, and two great-granddaughters all live in the same Malibu home.

The family planned a celebration in Malibu for “Winnie’s” 100th birthday to not only celebrate the achievement of reaching her milestone centennial, but to honor her years of teaching, philanthropy, kindness, and style.

Wilson was born in 1923 in Nebraska and raised in Minnesota. She moved to California to begin nursing education during the World War II years. Her husband of 75 years was a POW in Germany at the time. When the war was ending, she specialized in operating room nursing and earned her master’s degree. Wilson had a long association as a nursing administrator and faculty teacher at Golden West College in Orange County for most of her career. Her granddaughter Jen Hardy says her grandmother is the oldest licensed registered nurse and administrator in California. They are two separate categories. “I’m probably the oldest working nurse,” Wilson commented.

Just weeks ago, Wilson sold her

assisted living facility business with a consulting agreement for the next six months working remotely. While most senior citizens retire well before 99, the great-grandmother didn’t because “I enjoyed what I was doing.” And she added, “I was providing a service to people who needed care. If you enjoy what you’re doing you keep active.” She still drives.

Wilson wanted to become a nurse since seventh grade. “I noticed other people taking care of children. I saw a woman in a uniform and decided that’s what I wanted to do.”

Wilson became a savvy business woman running home health care agencies. After WWII, when Orange County was filled with orange groves Wilson and her husband bought land and invested in health care businesses and elder care facilities.

After a lifetime of caring for others and teaching Wilson is enjoying an active life in Malibu. “I always planned to move here. I like the opportunity to watch the little ones grow without being responsible for them. It’s very rewarding to watch them develop.” Wilson has three children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

About 40 people will show up to her 100th birthday party. “We’re having fun planning it. I look forward to seeing people who are flying in and coming from a distance. So, it’ll be fun.” Some guests are traveling from as far away as Singapore and London. Many are Wilson’s former nursing students and mentees.

“I told everybody it is my first 100th birthday, but I’m not planning to live to 200.”

Staying active has been a key to longevity. Since her children were skiers

Malibu resident and Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle talks about his new film ‘Babylon’

Malibu resident Damien Chazelle is the writer and director on his latest film “Babylon,” which come out Friday, Dec. 23. He appeared in person at the Malibu Film Society’s sneak preview screening of the film last Sunday night for an audience Q&A.

The three-hour and eight-minute long epic comedy/drama has a large ensemble cast with Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie in starring roles. Set in 1920s Hollywood — a time of “decadence, depravity, and outrageous excess,” in the words of the studio — the story follows the rise and fall of three key characters during the film industry’s transition from silent to sound films.

Chazelle, 37, won an Oscar for Best Director for “La La Land” in 2017. He was Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “La La Land” in 2017 and Best Adapted Screenplay for “Whiplash” in 2015. “Babylon” has received five nominations for the 80th Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.

During the Q&A, Chazelle revealed himself to be a major early Hollywood

film history buff and “Babylon” very much represents that interest. When one questioner likened production of the film to a “three-ring circus,” he said “Circuses were probably the forerunner of movies … The dirt, blood and sweat of the three-ring circus is where Hollywood came from.”

“Movies started as ‘down and dirty’ working-class entertainment, while people with money continued to attend

opera and ballet,” he noted, explaining that early moviemakers had the “freedom and willingness to experiment” because they worked in a largely unregulated environment.

As a new Harvard grad, Chazelle first came to Hollywood with his dreams back in 2009. He actually began pitching the idea for “Babylon” back then, knowing it was a “pipedream” project. It combined

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.AUCTION.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 104945-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 104945-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Ihope I’m not going too far out on a limb to predict that 2023 will be a better year than 2022. Let’s hope it is a considerably better year. If it isn’t, we are in trouble. Russia invaded Ukraine; women lost their right to an abortion; the world got noticeably warmer; prices of most things skyrocketed; the stock market tanked and Donald Trump announced he is running again — all in 2022. And yet, 2022 could have been much worse. How you might ask can that possibly be?

All you need to do is remember the prior year, the infamous 2021. With an attempted insurrection, 2021 set the bar very, very low. 2021 was also the year of covid. Most of us were relatively housebound. We did not travel much, dine out, or go to sporting events. We wore masks almost everywhere. And over 400,000 Americans died in 2021 from this horrible disease making it the third leading cause of death behind heart disease and cancer.

So let’s agree that neither 2021 nor 2022 were outstanding years. What can we expect for 2023? On the infectious disease front, hopefully more people will take their booster shots, and deaths and hospitalizations will continue to stabilize. The elections are behind us (hallelujah), and hopefully we can think about other matters. More than likely inflation will slowly come down, but the future in Ukraine is anybody’s guess, and we might well experience a recession.

The absolute truth is we can’t see the future, and we should all be ecstatic for that. The Greeks had a mythological character named Cassandra. She had the uncanny ability to see the future accurately, but she was cursed because she could not change the future in any way. Much of what happens in the world is way beyond our control, but let’s control what we can to make this coming year a good one!

Enjoy good health, and may 2023 be what you want it to be. Happy New Year!

Wilson finally took up the sport later in life in her 60s. “That was a big accomplishment I thought. I’m very proud of having been able to do that and I found out why they were so enthusiastic about it. It’s lots of fun.”

Wilson’s granddaughter Jen Hardy said, “She’s a great lady. I’m surprised she retired.”

Hardy admires many attributes of her grandmother’s work ethic and style as well. She says the family has nicknamed Wilson “The Dowergess” in a nod to the Downton Abbey series character Dowager Countess of Grantham who is always turned out in the loveliest finery. “She’s always in lace. She dresses in beiges and blues. She has stunning blue eyes. She has an elegant demeanor. I’ve never seen her yell in my entire life,” Hardy recalled. “And I was raised with my grandmother coming on every trip, coming to every play, coming to every major event in my life,” the lifelong Malibu resident said. Hardy’s family kept a permanent room for Wilson in their longtime Malibu home due to her frequent visits. “She was always with us. That’s why it’s so nice for my girls to know her.”

“I’m

film: It was “epic” and it was about Hollywood history. Because the film didn’t get made right away, he spent years collecting ideas for things he wanted to include in it.

“Anything that shocked or surprised me — anecdotes, characters, people, and interviews — I kept a whole notebook of things to add to the cauldron.”

In addition, he kept his dream for making “big canvas cinema, like some of the epics I grew up with — gargantuan pieces of cinema like “Titanic” and “JFK” in the ‘90s. They were inspiring to me, and they’ve become more and more rare,

these three-hour spectacles.”

There were a lot of ups and downs in getting “Babylon” made, according to Chazelle.

“Most studios said ‘no’ flat out,” he said. “Finally, Paramount, God bless them, were crazy enough to say ‘OK.’ Making a movie always seems to be like rolling a boulder uphill.”

However, the pandemic hit, and the making of the movie was delayed for a year, which caused them to have to do some recasting.

“The chairs all had to be reshuffled,” Chazelle remarked. “We could feel the movie slipping from our grasp, but on the positive side, we had time to spend on casting all the small parts with faces that are

unique and singular.”

“Babylon” hired 320 actors and 7,000 extras — and it wasn’t easy to find extras willing to take those parts.

“They either had to be naked or fighting on the battlefield, or dealing with alligators and snakes,” Chazelle conceded. “The level of things people were being asked to do was a challenge.”

For a third major role in the film, he specifically wanted to cast an unknown actor, which resulted in his discovery of Diego Calva from Mexico City.

“Finding Diego took the better part of that [pandemic] year,” he said. “I wanted a fresh face in that part — an everyman — a newcom-

er; so we can experience the largerthan-life characters played by Pitt and Robbie through him.”

“I originally found him through a head shot,” Chazelle said. “He was the epitome of a beginner, but he bloomed, and during rehearsals, suddenly he and Robbie felt like a pair of equals — electric and alive. He’s a major star in the making — a gift.”

There were often so many things going on at one time in the film that Chazelle resorted to choreographing the various scenes as if he were making a musical.

“We were choreographing extras like they were dancers,” he explained. “And actors needed to time their dialog. Pitt has a slower

rhythm and I had to push him to get through his dialog faster, which was the only way to coordinate with the other people in the frame, the overlapping dialog, the stunts, the fighting, and multiple people and things going on at once.”

One of the points Chazelle tries to make in the film is that, “Your soul lives forever on celluloid… there’s a weird eternal quality [to being in a movie]. Even today, we can watch Marilyn Monroe or Charlie Chaplin on film, and there‘s a kinship with these people that makes us feel like we know them.”

Chazelle and his wife, Olivia Hamilton, are both Ivy League graduates and live with their son on Point Dume.
