The late Richard Matheson, a long-time Hidden Hills resident, influenced the likes of Stephen King and created some of the most memorable and beloved works in the world of fantasy and science fiction.
Carrying an innate understanding of the shades and shadows of human nature, bridging soul with story, author Richard Matheson left an undeniable impact on modern suspense fiction. Known for mind bending, soul affirming writings of fantasy, science fiction and what some would label “horror”, Richard much preferred to be seen as a writer of “terror”, for it hinged not on blood and violence, but on the human psyche.
It is no surprise that as a young boy Richard spent a grand amount of his time
in solitude, entranced with his brilliant imagination, reading and musing about the inner workings of what made people tick and the world go round. At age seven he began authoring poems, and published his first short story at the astonishing age of eight years old. He began authoring novels in his early teens, graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1943.
Soon the world he so longingly mused about called, taking him overseas to serve with the U.S Army during World War 2. His wartime experiences gave him a firsthand vividity of mankind’s psychological turmoil and later
inspired his novel “The Beardless Warriors” (1960).
Matheson published over 100 short stories, 30 novels, and 50 writings for film and television, writing legendary Sci-fi Twilight Zone episodes such as “Third From the Sun” (1960), “The Last Flight” (1960), “And When the Sky was Opened” (1959) and “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” (1963) which starred William Shatner. Matheson developed a close friendship with Shatner, having him star in two of his Twilight Zone episodes and write a Star Trek episode: “Enemy Within” (1966) about a
subconscious schism between Captain Kirk’s heroic and destructive sides.
Many of Matheson’s novels touched the silver screen with the film Real Steel (2011) being adapted from his teleplay for the Twilight Zone episode “Steel” (1963). Along with the resplendent What Dreams May Come (1998) with Robin Williams about a man who crosses the spiritual bridge between heaven and hell to save his wife. I Am Legend is one of his most famous novels, which was adapted for film three times as The Last Man on Earth (1964), The Omega Man (1971) and I Am Legend (2007). It is credited for laying the foundation for the development of modern apocalyptic literature and television shows. His cult classic Somewhere in Time (1980) stars Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour and centers around a man who uses his mind to bend time travel to find a woman whom he fell in love with from a single photograph. Somewhere in Time was filmed at the Grand
Hotel in Michigan, and to this day it hosts an annual on location fan-club event where guests spend a weekend wearing period-piece clothing, meeting actors, and even re-enacting scenes.
It is evident that Richard’s works touch an intimate piece of humanity that continues to attract minds and hearts, keeping them fascinated. Steven King cited Richard Matheson as a potent creative influence on his writing, and even dedicated his works Cell and Elevation to Matheson. He inspired many more artists such as Steven Speilberg, George A. Romero and Guilmerro del Torro, yet Richard Matheson made the greatest personal impression on the people dearest to his heart.
Richard married Ruth Ann Woodson in California and had four children Bettina Mayberry, Richard Christian, Ali Marie and Christian Logan. The family settled in Hidden Hills, with Ali Marie reflecting, “Dad loved
the tranquility, natural beauty, and privacy of Hidden Hills. He usually worked at home, writing in his large office (which had been converted from part of our stable) and our curious horses used to peer into his window when he worked which was a distraction, he got a big kick out of”. Richard loved to be an active participant in the community, acting in the local theatre company, the Hidden Hills Players, and starring in various plays. Ali Marie says, “Hidden Hills in those days was very much a small friendly town, filled with interesting people and good vibes that all suited him”.
Richard Matheson carried a deep love for his family, paying homage to his wife Ruth in many of his stories, using her middle name and the middle names of all his children in the novel “What Dreams May Come”. He was remembered by friends and family for not only having a
brilliant mind, but a delightfully disarming sense of humor. Passing on both of those qualities to his children, Ali Marie jokes “The funniest moment for me is when I saw that he “immortalized” my horse Kit in the book “Somewhere in Time.” She is in the beginning pages but the rest of us? Nada!” When developing her own successful writing career she remembers, “Dad was always there for me in my career pursuits both as a mentor and inspiration. I learned a great deal about everything from good writing and discipline to creating a seamless white-out sentence…these being the prelaptop days! I also loved that when I was young, I would visit my dad’s movie and TV sets and then when I got older my parents visited me on many of my sets too (from Vancouver, Canada to New York City)”. R.C. Matheson pays homage to his father saying, “He was always my best friend and a superb writing mentor. He taught me
about writing and how to be a professional. I became a bestselling author, screenwriter and producer in film and television, no small thanks to his tutelage”. Richard (R.C.), Ali and Christian all followed their birthright and have successful careers as writers.
All the Matheson children care deeply about preserving their father’s incredible legacy. One of the most influential and prolific writers of this modern era, his unique voice continues to give insight into human existentialism and the metaphysical with his vast creative output still in great demand today. Ali Marie continues to honor her father by running a popular Facebook group called “He is LEGEND.” It is fitting that his children continue to create their own life chapters in addition to honoring the overarching legacy of their father. 4923 Topanga Cyn Blvd. Woodland Hills Topanga Cyn Blvd. Woodland HillsHIDDEN HILLS’ OWN CAMPBELL KIDS ARE CARVING A COOL, CRYSTALIZED PATH TOWARD WINTER SPORTS GREATNESS
Written by Britt AaronsonThe address sign in front of their house displays the saying: “Winter is Coming!” It should read: “The Campbells are Coming!” because it’s easy to identify the warm greetings, welcoming smiles, and bright blonde towheads as Charlotte, Emily & Ethan approach. Neighbors are used to seeing the affable siblings on their bikes, trampoline, skateboards, soccer fields, or playing with their many friends in the community, however for the last four years they have been recognized for being Nationally Ranked Ski Medalists.
Tiffany and Bryan have been together for twenty-two years, never apart since the day they met at a Halloween party on October 30th. Bryan is from a very small town in Iowa called Mt. Ayr, and Tiffany grew up in Beverly Hills. Tiffany’s family had a house in Mammoth for over 20 years, and Tiffany and Bryan have had their place for about six years. Bryan is an avid skier and Tiffany wanted to join her husband on the slopes, so when the kids were around three years old, they enrolled them in Mammoth’s “Mountain Rangers” program. The twins Emily & Ethan, and their younger sister Charlotte are 13 months apart, and the original intention was to use the program as a babysitter so the adults could enjoy some time alone on the weekends. Tiffany and Bryan
never imagined how their three young children would connect to the snow and the impact it would have on their lives.
Mammoth Mountain offers a wide variety of programs for skiers with a focus on developing the skills needed to compete. The three Campbell Siblings began training with Mammoth’s “Mighty Mights” Race Team, until their coaches realized Emily & Ethan were more suited to be on the Mammoth Free Ski team which they joined at nine years old. Freeskiing is a contemporary form of alpine skiing, which involves tricks, jumps, and terrain park features, such as rails, boxes, jibs, or other obstacles. This method of skiing arose from the growth of snowboarding combined with the progression of freestyle skiing.
Emily & Ethan are now 11 years old and in 6th grade at Mammoth Middle School. The twins both train on the free-ski team seven days a week in the events of halfpipe, slopestyle, boardercross, slalom and giant slalom. They also spend training time freeriding around the mountain looking for powder, trees and steeps, and ripping the groomed runs. Freeriding is important for attaining the mileage necessary to practice and refine the skills needed to ride the parks and pipes safely.
Emily is ranked number two in the nation in half pipe, and in the
top ten for slope style & rails, due to her methodical passion for free skiing. Besides practicing on the mountain everyday, she likes singing, performing, and doing gymnastics, which all contribute to her ability to expertly compete. For her, the best parts about training are how good and free she feels when she advances down the mountain. She confidently tells herself “not to overthink it” so her runs come together and she can land her tricks. She aspires to get on the U.S. Ski Team and compete in the Winter Olympics one day.
As a toddler, Ethan loved to do tricks. Now he is ranked number ten nationally in his Free Ski Competitions. Some of his favorite tricks are Cork 7 & 9’s, which means he can spin around more than two times. Ethan believes the best
parts of competing are “hanging out with your friends and learning from them, and the worst parts are falling and pushing through the soreness.” Like his siblings, he has a dedicated mindset with aspirations to join the U.S. Ski Team advising others to work hard and keep going until you get it. He repeats this sage mantra right before his run, “I have to have the mindset: I can do this.”
Charlotte is 10 years old and in 5th grade in Round Meadow Independent Study. She is a Race Team medalist ranked number one in GS in Mammoth, practicing with the gates on GS, Slalom, and Super-G courses. Super Giant slalom, or Super-G, is a racing discipline of alpine skiing. Along with the faster downhill, it is regarded as a “speed” event, in contrast to the technical events giant slalom and slalom. Much like downhill, a Super-G course consists of widely set gates that racers must pass through at a high rate of speed. The course is set so that skiers must turn more
than in downhill, though the speeds are still much higher than in giant slalom. Each athlete has only one run to clock the best time. It is a meticulous and technical sport that requires much discipline and focus, much like Charlotte’s aspirations to become a doctor. She states that even though falling does happen, “the gates don’t knock you over” so she encourages one to accept that even though one may not win, to “try one’s best, to never give up & keep on trying.”
Tiffany & Bryan believe producing top athletes is imperative, but developing exemplary children with superior values and admirable people-skills is more important. They lovingly encourage discipline, accountability, integrity, and teamwork for their busy family. Success on and off the hill is measured by supporting achievements, not just results. The happy family immerses themselves in the communities of Hidden Hills and Mammoth, enjoying the dynamic lifestyles that both cities offer. Both towns satiate their need for outdoor activity, however there is no competition for this family. Even though they spend the winter season residing & training in Mammoth, Hidden Hills is named as Emily, Ethan, and Charlotte’s home city on the National Ski Team registry. Hidden Hills is honored. Makes about 8 servings.
• 2 large eggplants
• 1 ½ cups Italian breadcrumbs
• 1 cup of egg whites (in carton)
• 1 large jar of marinara
• 2 packages of pre-sliced fresh mozzarella cheese
• ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
• Fresh basil leaves
• 2 Tsp. olive oil (may need to add more as more eggplant is added)
• Olive oil cooking spray
• Large Pyrex rectangle dish or 2 square dishes
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Slice the eggplant into 1 inch round slices. Place the egg whites and Italian breadcrumbs in two separate bowls and dip the eggplant slices into the egg whites, then dip both sides in the Italian breadcrumbs.
In a large skillet, heat 2 tsp. of olive oil on medium/ high heat and spray the pan with olive oil cooking spray. Add the eggplant slices and cook about 3-4 minutes on each. The eggplant should soften and bread crumbs brown on each side. Repeat with all of the eggplant slices – place the cooked eggplant on paper towels to absorb excess oil while you continue to cook the rest of the slices.
Once all of the eggplant slices are cooked, cover the bottom of the Pyrex dish(es) with a thin layer of marinara sauce. Add the eggplant slices in one layer, put a spoonful of marinara on each eggplant round, then sprinkle with grated parmesan and add a basil leaf and a slice of mozzarella. Add a second layer of eggplant slices in between each round space (don’t stack them) and repeat with the marinara and cheeses.
Cover with foil, making sure that it is not touching the cheese or it will stick. Spray the foil with cooking spray before covering. Bake for 25 minutes or until the cheese is melted. You can then broil the uncovered eggplant for a minute or two to brown the cheese slightly.

Hidden Hills residents joined Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva and Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station Captain Salvador Becerra for an evening of information and dialogue regarding public safety issues. Sheriff Villanueva’s 77th Town Hall began in the Community Center Theater with a short film about the history of the County Sheriff Department. The film was followed by a commendation presentation to Dr Ryan Manning and Mr Cuahtemoc Perez for their life-saving assistance in a machete attack against a family visiting a Malibu beach in September.
Sheriff Villanueva named the big three challenges we face as homelessness, violent crime, and illegal marijuana grows across our County. Even though we are isolated and safer in our community than most, rising homicide rates, petty crimes, and grand theft auto rates are fueling violent crime.
Residents were asked to submit questions. Subjects ranged from local issues related to the Board of Supervisors, cases being prosecuted by District Attorney George Gascon, Speed Limit Reduction within the City, Homelessness, Wildfire Preparation & Management, Vaccine Mandates, obtaining permits for Carrying a Concealed Weapon (CCW), Current Community Crime Statistics, support by our Covered Six Security Team, Human Trafficking, Election Integrity, Emergency Response Time, Funding and Staffing Issues, & Crime Prevention in our Community.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva, Captain Salvador Becerra, Lieutenant Geofferey Deedrick (Homeless Outreach Service Team), Lieutenant Chad Watters (local liaison at Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station), Lieutenant Ryan Vienna (Mental Evaluation Team), & Sargent Robbie
Royster (Emergency Operations Bureau) spent the evening candidly answering questions and demonstrating how highly motivated their force works to perform outreach and solve crimes important to victims and residents in the community.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva explained his mission is to protect and defend our residential areas, business district, and tourist destinations; providing mental assistance for people who need help, while at the same time trying to understand the complex needs of the homeless population. He has 10 million bosses in Los Angeles County and he proudly stressed the importance of a fully funded and staffed Sheriff’s department in order to continue their “rich tradition of service to the community.” HH
The official portraits of President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama are the stars on display at LACMA from November 7, 2021 – January 2, 2022.
Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of President Obama and Amy Sherald’s portrait of the former First Lady became iconic the moment they were unveiled at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in February 2018. They are currently on stop three of
a five-city tour traveling to the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, LACMA, High Art Museum, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston from June 2021 through May 2022. Through this tour, the portraits are expected to reach millions of people who might not otherwise have an opportunity to view these remarkable paintings.
LACMA presents Black American Portraits along with the Obama Portraits to
articulate a history of America through portraiture, which has been used as a tool of power and self-determination throughout American history. The Obama Portraits are hung gallery style, both towering over six feet high, and installed thoughtfully on a gallery wall due north respectfully overlooking the larger companion exhibit encompassing approximately 140 works of art by 110 artists spanning over 200 years. Early American portraits of Black people are rare, so the volume of work is what counts here. This exhibit engages with history and gives context for the present, highlighting the ways in which African Americans have used the medium of portraiture
to envision and reimagine themselves for centuries.
The Obama Portraits Tour has inspired an unprecedented response from the public. In addition to the paintings, the tour features teacher workshops, curatorial tours, and a richly illustrated book. This long overdue celebration of the radiance of African American culture incorporates special presentations that enhance the conversations surrounding the power of portraiture and its potential to engage communities to understand Black histories, going beyond stories of racism and slavery to spotlight Black achievement. It’s quite a feat when top Southern California architects and a nationally prominent Los Angeles interior design firm can successfully create a new boutique property that is both harmonious with centuries-old architecture and the needs of modern, worldly travelers. However, what makes the Inn at the Mission San Juan Capistrano even more impressive is that it was completed during 2020 and opened this past summer.

Under the direction of Kay Lang + Associates and AO Architects, the Inn at the Mission San Juan Capistrano transcends being inspired by a national landmark and museum (“the birthplace of Orange County). It taps into what the Mission itself represents: The state’s multi-cultural history, informed by Native American, Spanish, Mexican and European heritage. Centuries ago, the Mission was a hub of agriculture, industry, education and religion, and aesthetically, the theme is continued throughout the property. The influences of the natural terrain and different cultures are woven into the contemporary design of its 125 hacienda style guest rooms,
seven luxury suites and three residential-style villas. The agricultural heritage flows into its own olive grove (which produces its proprietary EVOO olive oil) while the architectural heritage influences continue into its expansive outdoor patio overlooking the Mission’s Great Stone Church.
