SAN LUIS OBISPO — The San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors held a regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 9 a.m. Due to the increase in COVID cases in the county, the meeting was held remotely with a zoom link as well as the usual county website links. The meeting opened with comment on the consent agenda, and Supervisor Debbie Arnold requested to pull item 22 (approving the submittal of an application for the Locally-Operated State Park Grant Program and allowing for the reimbursement of previously incurred Cayucos Veteran’s Hall Rehabilitation Project expenditures) for discussion. making a loop around Entrada Ave., Palma Ave., and Traffic Way back to El Camino Real to finish out the show. Crowds were seated along ECR with prime viewing locations no matter where one chose to sit. You may have seen chairs set out along the route as early as noon on Friday…a welcoming sight after missing it last year. Hot rods, trucks, vans, rat rods, motorcycles, tricked-out Impalas, candy-painted

Dodge Darts, and turbo-charged Chevys were just a few of the sights and sounds were to be found pacing the course as vehicles of all years, sizes, and colors converge for an evening of fun. Motorcycle Cops of the Atascadero Police Force rode in unison to start the evening as the crowd cheered and hollered with excitement for a fun-filled evening ahead. “I’ve always been around old cars

because my dad and uncle like to work on them and paint them,” said Paso Robles resident Mackenzie Bragg, who attended the event. “It’s fun to see the work everyone puts into it, and the cars are all so cool and different.” Friday night’s Hot El Camino Cruise Nite kicked off Atascadero’s Cruisin’ Weekend, which continued on Saturday, CONTINUED ON PAGE A15

Atascadero Greybots: Building a Legacy Three-time robotics World Champions seeking new members By PATRICK PATTON patrick@atascaderonews.com

ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Greybots were started in 2002 by a group of high school students interested in STEM and engineering. They are a competitive high school robotics team that competes each year in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. This competition brings high school students from 34 countries around the world together to compete in a challenge given to them at the beginning of January. The Greybots compete in other regional competitions as well. During a typical season, they attend two regional events and the World Championship in Houston, TX. The Greybots are three-time world champions and have won the World Championship in 2011, 2017, and 2019. Only seven teams out of roughly 4,000 worldwide can claim three world championships.

ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Printery Foundation has a clear and ambitious vision for the beautiful old printery building on Olmeda Ave. According to the President of the Atascadero Printery Foundation, Karen McNamara, she explained “The vision for the Printery is a site for the entire community to use. There are a total of eleven large and small areas, plus a large outdoor space that can host everything from artists in residence to private parties to

large fundraisers. Many uses will involve the arts— bringing a true Community Theater for the North County. Historic displays throughout the building will point back to the amazing international influence of publications produced at the Printery and the influence on Women’s Suffrage.” On Jul. 31, the foundation hosted a free Family Skate Demo and Movie Night at the Printery to raise funds for the project. “I wanted to plan a community event that would attract the ‘kids’ that used to skate there,” said Sheila New, Printery board member and the organizer of the event. “We partnered with 805 Board Shop who CONTINUED ON PAGE A15
