Black and White Ball Raises Six Figures for Templeton Schools A grand total of $141,656 was raised by TES, VES + TMS Parent Teacher Organizations

TEMPLETON — The Black and White Ball, put on by the TES, VES + TMS Parent Teacher Organizations (PTO), was held on Saturday, Mar. 26, for its fifth year. The ball was held at Rava Wines in Paso Robles and raised funds for Templeton and Vineyard elementary schools, and Templeton Middle School.

Over 300 people attended the event, including volunteers and entertainment. And a grand total of $141,656 was raised by TES, VES, + TMS PTO, which was 236% of their fundraising goal.

“The generosity of our small but mighty community is simply amazing!” said Templeton Unified School

Districts’ Superintendent Aaron Asplund, who was in attendance.

“These funds will do so much good to augment and enrich the school experience for countless Templeton students.”

“Looking back at the previous auctions, the most money the event had ever raised was $65,000 … in my head, I was hoping to reach six figures but wasn’t sure if we could get there or not — this was such an exciting surprise,” added Azurae Shults, auction chair and TES PTO president along with Bonnie Loftus.

In 2020, the TES, VES + TMS PTO were gearing up for The Black and White Ball when COVID-19 hit.

The ball was canceled in both 2020 and 2021, after a four-year streak that started in 2016.

“Our 2020 event was pushed back to 2022. So we called this our fifth annual auction,” Shults said.

The Black and White Ball featured catering by Jimmy’s Catering, music from Moonshiner Collective,

Emcee Andy Morris, and live magic performed by Mark Collier. Auctioneer Jim Settle and his ringmen ran the live auction portion of the evening.

“Beyond securing the venue, working out sponsorship deals, and planning details for the event, there was a whole other set of details that had to be considered to make the silent and live auctions successful,” Shults said. “We coordinated with the teachers on all three campuses to encourage themed class baskets that we could include in the silent auction. With the help of the teachers and several local donors, we had over 100 silent auction items. We also worked with local businesses to procure live auction donations and sponsorships.”

PASO ROBLES — The Paso Robles City Council has created a two-member ad hoc committee to review and make recommendations regarding the City’s existing memorandum of understand-

ing with El Camino Homeless Organization (ECHO).

ECHO currently operates an emergency homeless shelter at 1134 Black Oak Drive.

The City Council appointed Councilmembers John Hamon and Steve Gregory to the committee on March 15.

The formation of the committee is in response to a request from ECHO for the City to provide up to

$444,000 to support operating costs of the shelter and related services. The City Council discussed ECHO’s request at its March 15 meeting and requested additional information prior to making a decision. At the conclusion of the discussion, the City Council opted to create an ad hoc committee to review the request in more detail.

The committee is expected to hold up to four meetings in April and May with the objective of providing a recommendation to the full City Council at the May 17 City Council meeting. The committee meeting schedule is as follows. Templeton FFA Project Auction Called ‘Best Ever’ The sold-out event brought in over $165,000 in student project sales

TEMPLETON — Templeton’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) held its first project auction since 2019 and brought in over $165,000 in student projects alone. This year’s auction was held in the Estrella building at the Paso Robles Event Center on Saturday, Apr. 2.

“It was our best [auction] ever,” said Templeton FFA advisor Chris Hildibrand.

Traditionally, each year Templeton FFA students build projects to be sold at the chapter’s project auction.

Proceeds from the projects go directly back to the student, while ticket sales and sponsorship money go towards the Templeton FFA Support Club.

The support club funds FFA related activities and scholarships. Per year, the club gives $10,000 in scholarships to Templeton FFA students.

Projects range from picnic tables, barbecues, and wine barrel art to anything students can imagine.

Students keep track of hours and costs throughout the project in their FFA Record Book for class and FFA credits and count towards earning FFA Degrees.

The State FFA Degree is awarded to FFA members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to the California State FFA Association and made significant accomplishments in their Supervised

Approximately 1,800 State FFA Degrees are handed out each year.

After receiving their State Degree, FFA members can work towards earning their American Degree — the highest honor awarded FFA members across the nation.

This year’s 64 student projects were auctioned to a sold-out building of 500 paying patrons. The auction brought in $165,000 in project sales and over $30,000 in ticket sales and sponsorship funds, which turned out to be the chapter’s most profitable auction to date.

This year, the auction’s sponsors were Powdercoating USA, Miller Drilling, and Barrelhouse Brewing.

It took Simonin approximately 75 hours of planning and building.

Kadin Javadi’s smoker received this year’s Judge’s Award. It took him about 50 hours to finish the project.

“I have been wanting to build a larger project for my last project auction and thought a smoker would be a fun and challenging build,” he said.

In addition to having their best auction to date, several Templeton FFA students were recognized at the State Leadership Conference, Mar. 26-29. The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their SAE projects, have developed specialized skills that they can apply to their future careers. Less than 1% of FFA members will earn a proficiency award.

Tour of Paso Raises Nearly $65,000 for Local Cancer Support Community Bike ride draws 122 cyclists in its return to Niner Wine Estates

TEMPLETON — On Sunday, Apr. 3, 122 cyclists met at Niner Wine Estates in Paso Robles at 7:30 a.m. to participate in the Tour of Paso Bike Ride. Tour of Paso is an annual fundraiser for Cancer Support Community – California Central Coast (CSC-CCC) in Templeton.

The ride had both a 50-mile and a 26-mile option for participants, with a luncheon and award ceremony at Niner once the ride concluded at noon. This is the event’s first time at Niner Wine Estates since the 2019 Tour of Paso.

“We are thrilled to be back hosting at Niner and being able to enjoy a nice lunch and some fantastic wine, all provided by Niner Wine Estates,” said CSC-CCC Executive Director Candice Sanders.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Tenet Health Central Coast announced that both Sierra V ista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo and Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton have again earned the title of “LGBTQ+ Health Care Equality Leader” for 2022 after a comprehensive assessment process by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC).

Both hospitals received perfect 100 scores from the HRC in the 2022 assessment.

“Being part of a community means more living in the same area — it means you share kinship and are safe among those who care about you. That is exactly what Tenet Health Central Coast

is all about,” said Mark Lisa, the CEO of both hospitals.

ATASCADERO — This year, Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services is celebrating 100 years of fire service to their community. Atascadero firefighters would like to honor those who came before them, recognize all who are currently serving, and express appreciation for those who will carry on the legacy into the future.

Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services has a long, rich history of public service and engagement with the community.

“As this year marks the Centennial Anniversary of our humble beginning as the Atascadero Fire Protection District,” reflects Fire Chief Casey Bryson, “we would like to extend our gratitude to those that came before us and those that will follow in our footsteps of public service to the community we love and that many of us call home.”

The Mission Market Place is designed to showcase the Central Coast’s best products and locally made goods. It will give twenty artisans, growers, and producers a home to showcase their locally grown or hand-crafted items to over 420,000 fairgoers. Product examples could include things like honey, olive oil, spices, nuts, teas, breads, baked goods, dried fruit, jerky, preserved foods, artisan cheese, coffee, as well as handcrafted or repurposed items.

The Fair will provide each of the participants

with product placement in the Mission Market Place located in Estrella Hall, the Fair’s largest indoor commercial building. Vendors must provide the product and pricing, and the Fair will do the rest. The Fair will staff the Mission Market Place, provide display options for most products and space for products with unique needs. Vendor spaces cost $435 plus 20 percent commission on products and services sold.

One Man Killed in San Miguel Car Accident Man Arrested at LAX

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, but the accident is still under investigation STAFF REPORT

SAN MIGUEL — One person was killed in a car accident in San Miguel on Monday afternoon. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed a two-vehicle crash on Indian Valley Road left one 24-year-old Paso Robles man dead.

The accident occurred around 3:35 p.m. when two men were in a Mazda 3 being driven at an

unknown speed northbound on Indian Valley Road. At the same time, a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling southbound on Vineyard Canyon Road.

When the Mazda neared the intersection, the driver made a direct left turn into the Chevy’s path, and the two vehicles collided head-on.

The passenger of the Mazda, who was killed, has been identified as a 24-year-old Paso Robles man. It has been reported he was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene of the accident. His name has not been released pending notification of kin.

District Attorney Dan Dow Responds to Governor Reversing Parole Newsom blocked release of Jason Greenwell, one of five convicted in 2013 murder of Dystiny Myers.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — On March 30, District Attorney Dan Dow announced that he is pleased with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s decision to reverse the Board of Parole Hearings’ Nov. 18, 2021 decision to grant Jason Adam Greenwell parole. Greenwell was convicted in 2013 based on his plea to second-degree murder for his participation, along with four other individuals, in the horrific murder of 15-year-old Dystiny Myers.

While the motive remains murky as to why Greenwell and his four accomplices decided to murder Dystiny, it was apparent they were all heavily involved in the use of methamphetamine. Dystiny was brutally beaten, taped to a chair, then removed, placed in a bag, thrown in the back of a truck, taken to a remote area, dumped into a shallow grave, and set on fire. Her

partially burned remains were discovered by a CalFire employee investigating a reported grass fire.

On Dec. 21, 2021, Dow wrote a letter to Newsom urging him to use his authority to reverse the Board of Parole Hearings’ decision to allow Greenwell to be released on parole.

On Mar. 30, the District Attorney received the governor’s written decision in which he reversed the Board of Parole Hearings’ decision.

“I am grateful for Governor Newsom’s decision to reverse the Board of Parole Hearings’ decision,” Dow said.

“We agree with the governor’s conclusion that Greenwell currently poses an unreasonable danger to society if released from prison at this time.”

In Governor Newsom’s written decision, he explained in part: “I have carefully examined the record for evidence that Mr. Greenwell’s insight and self-awareness have developed sufficiently to minimize his risk factors. Unfortunately, I find that Mr. Greenwell’s discussion of the causative factors for his involvement in the crime indicate gaps in insight that bear on his

Beginnings of Lighthouse Atascadero Reality Tour created to bring awareness and education

Lighthouse Atascadero was created in 2012 in response to several tragic deaths of local kids. These tragedies were a result of drug overdoses. As Lighthouse Atascadero developed, it was obvious what we needed to do as a group. We decided it would be our goal to raise awareness and offer ways to prevent kids from becoming addicted to drugs. Intervention and education were at the top of our list. I was tasked with implementing The Reality Tour program.

In 2013 we presented the first Reality Tour. Reality Tour is a tool that checks all of the boxes in our mission statement: Dedicated to overcoming addiction through Awareness, Prevention, Intervention, and Education.

We present this program to local kids ages 12 through 18 years old. All kids attending must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. The program takes the audience through the many scenes of addiction.

The program begins with a peer pressure scene where several high school-age kids demonstrate tough decision-making, followed by the kids’ decisions when some of their peers want to experiment,

use or abuse drugs.

Attendees are then taken to a scene where the addicted kid is arrested for theft and possession of illegal drugs. The next scene takes attendees into the jail, where the addicted kid is booked into the facility.

Attendees listen to the narrative as it relates (to the kid and what he or she might expect while in jail. The audience is then taken into the dramatic and emotional overdose scene, where medics are trying to revive the kid who has just overdosed. The last scene takes the audience to the funeral for the young kid who lost their life as a result of a drug overdose.

In addition, attendees receive education on current drug trends in our community, along with a recovering addict telling his or her story of addiction and recovery.

The tour wraps up with round table conversations with attendees and professionals in our community. Everyone can leam more about legal and illegal drug use. It is a great opportunity for kids and their parents to ask questions and get answers.

In the pursuit of furthering her career goals, Alice moved to San Luis Obispo, Ca, and had a successful career as a Correctional Officer at California Men’s Colony. While working at CMC, Alice met and married Timothy Thomason in 1990. Together they became loving grandparents and built their life together.

When Alice was not working at CMC, she enjoyed her days off by traveling to Las Vegas, actively cheering at her grandchildren’s sporting events on the weekends, and even participated in Slow Pitch softball leagues. Alice served 25 years for the Department for Corrections and retired in 2008. In 2014, Alice relocated to Victorville, Ca. After graduating High School, Alice fell in love with James Todd and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Juanita Todd. Thereafter, the family moved to Los Angeles, Ca, in 1968.

Alice and James Todd made the commitment to bond their love in Holy Matrimony.

shows on Netflix. During some of her last months, as she battled with her illness, she traveled to Texas for Christmas with her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She fought a long battle until the Lord called her home.

Family came first and was above all else to Mama, a value she instilled in all those around her. The hole left by her absence is impossible to fill.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, John and Bernice Crowfield, her Ex-Husband James Todd, Late Husband Timothy Thomason, and her Sister Shirley Ann Ball.

She is survived by her daughter Juanita Todd-Hinton (Victorville, CA), five grandchildren, Kyndra Hinton (Dallas, TX), Breana Glaude (Husband Robert, Dallas, TX), Markita Hinton (Sacramento, CA), Markus Hinton (Victorville, CA), Gerald Todd (Las Vegas, NV), two Great- Grandchildren, Alijah and Kamerah. Two sisters, H.M. Settles (KC, MO), Kathryn Jordan (Highland, CA), one brother, Pastor Charles B. Crowfield (Los Angeles, CA), and a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends to cherish her memories.

anet Eileen Wiirre was born on June 2, 1957, in Hayward, CA, to Arthur and Lucille Wiirre. She went home to the Lord on March 26, 2022.

She is the youngest of six siblings, survived by her sisters Kathy and Karen. She had ten children and is survived by 9.

Sarah, Becky, Josh, Rachel, Abraham, Hannah, Jacob, Faith, and Marah. She was also a grandmother to 26 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Janet’s life was spent as a devoted Christ-follower and dedicated mother. She raised her children through the struggles of being a single mom. Her hobbies included farming with her animals, gardening, bargain shopping, cooking, and being a community activist. She enjoyed being involved with the community and church and planning family gatherings.

indi Ann Martin was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She passed away on March 17, 2022, at age 70, after a courageous two-year battle with complications from a spinal tumor.

Cindi was beautiful, humble, easy-going, and embodied the essence of a true California girl.

She was raised toes in the sand, spending her summers hunting for conch shells and other beach treasures with her sisters.

Over the years, she could be spotted supporting her children and grandchildren at their various sporting events around the area, usually wrapped in a blanket with a bag of sunflower seeds or Red Vines. Friends

and family visiting Cindi would usually be greeted by heaps of her famous chocolate chip cookies.

Cindi had a great talent for home decorating and mastered the vintage coastal style of decor. She made a small business out of finding and reselling home accessories and repurposing vintage furniture.

She loved her church family and was very active in her church, spending time helping manage the cafe.

Cindi had an infectious, self-deprecating sense of humor, one that never left her, even during her battle towards the end of her life. We will miss her in the most profound way.

A memorial service for Cindi is planned for June 4, 2022 (time TBA) at Refuge Church, 6955 Portola Road, Atascadero.

The Looming Threat to Many American Rights THOMAS ELIAS COMMENTARY

E

very day, major pundits and others — mostly on the liberal Democratic side of the ledger — bewail the threat to democracy in new laws adopted by several Republican-controlled states that appear to restrict minority voting rights.

They’re mostly correct. With no proof, backers of those new laws assume every person living in this country legally has the government documents the new laws require before many voters can vote by mail, vote early, or even

go to an ordinary polling place.

But there’s a far bigger threat waiting in the weeds, one that could threaten not only voting rights but many others assured by the federal and state constitutions, from abortion on demand to emergency room health care and much more.

This threat goes by the name of “Convention of the States Action.” It is the work of far-right activists who claim they mean no harm to anyone but want a new constitutional convention similar to the one conducted in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787, several years after the Revolutionary War. This putative new convention is authorized by Article V of the existing Constitution and would have the authority to change almost everything in that most hallowed blueprint of American democracy, so long as 38 state

legislatures agree.

Right now, that seems like an impossible number. But only 34 legislatures need to vote for a convention for it to happen, and 18 have already approved, most recently West Virginia, whose state House and Senate okayed the convention on just one day in February. One legislative chamber in each of eight other states has also approved.

So a new constitutional convention is now more than halfway to reality, with no time limit on when other states can join the effort and no time limit on when the other halves of partially-approving states can vote.

So far, the effort looks like a purely GOP thing, with approving states including Florida, Texas, Alabama, and more than a dozen other GOP-controlled states. No Democratically-run state is on the list.

Individual backers include Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Donald Trump cabinet member Ben Carson, former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and ex-Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. That’s essentially a list of conservative Republican luminaries.

Sponsors of the potential convention say it would be strictly limited to discussing Constitutional amendments that “limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, impose fiscal restraints, and place term limits on federal officials.”

But there is nothing in Article V limiting what a new convention could pass.

How many Americans today believe the current Bill of Rights, with its freedoms of speech, press, and assembly, plus its ban

on formal connections between church and state, would survive in a convention dominated by Republicans loyal to ex-President Trump?

Even if the convention were to observe the limits its sponsors suggest, it’s plain that health care, freedom of movement between states, allowing states to make almost all land use decisions within their borders, and the basic rights guaranteed today have fiscal implications. A convention could pass an amendment banning abortions that would supersede state laws like those assuring the procedures would continue in California even if the Supreme Court negates the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

It could also end birthright citizenship, under which anyone born here is automatically a citizen, wherever their parents hailed from. That could be done in the

ounting all the ways in which the president and the Democrat Party are systematically destroying America would take more than one article, but I will touch on some of the more dramatic. No need, I presume to cite an ever-escalating cost of gas at the pump or energy in most any form, especially for Californians. I will remind you that on the day Biden took office, you were paying two dollars or less per gallon of gas than now, and the price of oil per barrel was in the low 40s versus over $120/ barrel now.

So, in reality, there would be no limits on such a convention and its products if 38 states ratify them. Article V sets no time limit for ratification, so these things could be voted on in various states years or decades down the line, when political leanings in many places may have changed.

There’s a reason why no constitutional convention has been held since the original one: A general sense of the danger in letting anyone tinker with or reverse basic American principles. That’s exactly what a convention of the states could bring, and that’s why it’s such a dangerous possibility.

as Trump left office: no need for oil from the Middle East, Venezuela, or Russia if we desired, only to have that opportunity cavalierly tossed aside by Biden on his first day in office. Biden followed that up with a slew of new regulations on the oil/gas industry, with his EPA strangling small independent refineries with emission standards so stringent that more than a few have subsequently gone out of business. The financial sector populated by “woke” Board rooms decided that fossil fuels were bad investments, and independent oil companies and drilling operations were increasingly denied capital for their projects.

Federal regulatory agencies held up permits even though oil leases had been granted, stretching the permit application process from a few weeks to nearly a year before being ultimately denied. Permits to export natural gas overseas, especially to Europe, languished on the desk of the Energy Secretary and increased the vulnerability of Western European

countries to energy blackmail by Putin’s Russia. Europe’s experiment with alternatives failed, forcing a return to North Sea oil, and Germany, which shut down its nuclear plants, is reverting to coal as an immediate backstop. Adding insult to injury, the President’s new budget includes eleven new taxes on fossil fuels, disregarding the maxim that the more you tax something, the less of it you receive. The fossil fuel industry, like any business, runs on profits. Make it less profitable, and the industry will produce less, thus a partial explanation for skyrocketing energy costs. California makes no secret of its hostility to the oil business, so naturally, you’re paying the highest energy prices in the nation.

Much of the hostility towards fossil fuels is misplaced, and state energy policy can be counterproductive. Case in point, all those merchant ships parked offshore, some carrying bulk crude oil.

According to press reports, those merchant ships burn low-grade

bunker fuel, which is the cheapest and dirtiest of fuels, burned by the ton per hour, emitting 2000 times the sulfur in diesel fuel used in cars and trucks. California has increased its use of imported oil transported by those parked ships from 5% to 58% under Gov. Newsom’s watch. The Biden/ Newsom/Democrat environmental agenda is destroying the environment along with the economy and the hopes and aspirations of millions of Americans. If Biden hadn’t killed the Keystone XL pipeline on day one, it would be complete and transporting 850,000 barrels of Canadian oil to America daily.

That project had gone through all the hearings, court challenges, and permits required for years but was canceled outright for political reasons regardless of the economic consequences. In Biden’s world, politics trumps the national interest every time. Meanwhile, every barrel of Russian oil sold funds his military aggression and atrocities at our expense.

Biden spokespersons attempted to deflect the rise of inflation onto Russia, but the facts reveal otherwise. On Inauguration Day, inflation stood at 1.4 percent, increased to 2.6 percent two months later, increased again to 5.4 percent by July 2021, increased to 6.8 percent

by November 2021, and finally to 7.9 percent by February 2022, well before Russia invaded Ukraine.

Each inflation jump was marked by a Biden/democrat spending blowout initiative, duly noted and warned about by a plethora of national economists as being policies guaranteed to feed inflation, which is really another tax on working Americans. I remember the 1970’s well, but this is likely worse. Biden’s energy policies cause not just high gas prices but will also feed global famine as fertilizer prices soar due to dramatic increases in fossil fuels, a key ingredient to the production of fertilizer. The world’s poorest will suffer most, literal starvation as those on a save the planet crusade will blindly pursue

immoral energy policies to make themselves feel good.

What else will Biden do not in our national interest? Dropping the Title 42 CDC requirement for turning back illegal entrants across our southern border as planned for mid-May will double illegal crossings to 18,000/day from 157 countries as illegal, deadly drugs like fentanyl (killing 300 Americans a day) pour across our open border. We can’t absorb that level of migration; no country can. Finally, our national defense, at a time of increasing peril from soon to be four hostile nuclear powers, is in steady decline.

Funding is not keeping abreast of inflation, resulting in declining readiness and inability to meet existential threats emerging this decade. Our nation is in peril, and Biden doesn’t seem to care.

The Acute Care Nursery at French has been caring for premature and other sick

newborns for several years, but the NICU at French Hospital represents an advancement of integrated maternal-child services on the Central Coast. The substantial investment in staff, facility, and equipment will help ensure that the NICU continues to provide excellent care.

Newborn intensive care is one of the most dynamic and rapidly changing fields in all of medicine. Approaches and equipment that were considered “state-of-the-art” years and decades ago, have given way to evidenced-based, innovative, and often less invasive techniques. In addition to highly trained clinicians at the local hospitals, maintaining clinical excellence and meeting patient service expectations requires an ongoing commitment and investment in up-to-date facilities and the latest equipment.

In my county, you have to get a permit to cut down a tree on your own property, even if it’s a pine tree slowly turning brown because the bark beetles are trying to kill them all. Because few people want to go through the hassle of getting a permit, not to mention paying for one, there are far too many rotting trees which just attract more beetles, and all the deadfall will serve as kindling for the next massive wildfire to decimate western forests.

In yet another move to save our forests, the National Park Service has made it illegal to climb on any tree in all U.S. national parks. Many state parks

and several municipalities have also banned tree climbing, even though I’ve yet to hear of a single tree dying due to an adolescent tree climber.

We’re doing all these ridiculous things in the name of climate change and to reduce the amount of CO2 in the air, you know that stuff that every human on earth expels all day, every day for the duration of their life? You know, CO2, that stuff that plants need in order to grow?

While our government is busy devising new ways to tax and regulate everyone’s carbon footprint to prevent the temperature of the earth from going higher or lower, one or two degrees (like it has done countless times in the history of the earth), there is a simpler solution. If everyone would just stop breathing for four minutes, the cancer that is humanity would be cured instantaneously. But don’t forget to wrap yourself in tin foil, or your dead body could still emit carbon as you decay.

and the brilliant green rolling landscape. Just 15 minutes from Paso Robles you’ll crest the Santa Lucia Mountains where you’ll see the Pacific coastline. Dale Evers, the artist behind the creation of the archway, said, “This project is meaningful on so many levels because it’s meaningful for me, it’s meaningful for the City of Paso Robles, it’s meaningful for Norma. It’s been organic, and there’s been some

great people involved.”

Moye and Evers thanked city staff and others for their help with the process to build the archway.

“Artwork helps express a community’s values and create an evaluated sense of awareness for our community members and visitors,” Moye said. “We live in the best town in the whole world, and you people are the greatest people in the whole world.”

Martin concluded that now when

people try to find Norma’s Way, they will know exactly where to go.

A reception followed the ceremony at Dale Evers Studio at 1000 Park St., where refreshments and good camaraderie were provided.

Peuvrelle argued nationwide coverage of the case means familiarity with the case — it has not been centered in San Luis Obispo County only.

Ultimately, Judge van Rooyen said he took every-

thing presented so far into consideration but says he finds it a reasonable likelihood the Floreses won’t receive a fair and impartial trial in San Luis Obispo County. He added media coverage of the case over time weighed on his decision, specifically how coverage and interest in the case have increased over the years.

A hearing is set for Apr. 20 at 8:30 a.m. to determine new details of changing the venue.

Sanger, who is Paul Flores’s defense attorney, said Paul is only willing to wave time for 60 days from today’s date but not any further. Peuvrelle stated

he had not received confirmation from the California Judicial Council regarding venues available to take on the trial. He was concerned Apr. 20 would be too soon to select a new county.

Smart was last seen with Paul Flores leaving an off-campus party on Crandall Way in San Luis Obispo on May 25, 1996.

Although her remains have never been found, Smart was legally declared dead in 2002.

Paul and Ruben Flores were arrested at their homes in April 2021, nearly 25 years after Kristin’s disappearance.

According to reports, the defense and prosecution would have to agree on the new location with approval from the new venue. It is likely the attorneys and judge would follow the case to the new location.

Paso Robles Press reached out to the San Luis Obispo County DA’s office. They have no comments to make at this time.

Council then unanimously voted to reinstate the Fourth of July Community Fireworks Celebration at Barney Schwartz Park. The city has not held the firework show since 2012, but it was an extremely popular event for Paso Roblans, bringing close to 20,000 people to the show.

In 2014, the event moved to the downtown area in

coordination with the city’s 125th-anniversary celebrations. July Fourth celebrations were suspended after 2014 when the volunteer group spearheading the event disbanded and event staging costs escalated.

Staff has developed a preliminary event plan and budget to stage the traditional celebration at Barney Schwartz Park on Monday, Jul. 4. The planned event will feature children’s activities, a military flyover, and a 20-minute fireworks show. Camp Roberts is partnering with the city and assisting with needed volunteers and a military flyover.

On Tuesday, Mar. 15, Travel Paso voted to commit $50,000 toward the event. The total event cost is estimated at $110,000.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for Apr. 19 at 6:30 p.m.
