"This is an exciting day for us in public health because this is bringing to fruition something that's been in the works for over a year," said SLO County Public Health Director Penny Borenstein.
During the nomination period for the Novem ber 2022 election, only one candidate, incumbent Wayne Petersen, submitted papers to run for one of two open seats on the board. Since there is only one candidate, there will not be an election in November for the Templeton CSD Board of Directors. Wayne Petersen will hold one of the two seats, and the California Election Code permits the County of San Luis Obispo Board of Supervi sors to appoint someone to the second seat if there are fewer candidates running than seats open.
The exercise will be held on Sept. 22 at 2955 Union Road.

7th Annual Fryer’s Club Roast - October 23, 2022
Making a Difference Every Day for the Youth in Our Community

In addition to the amaz ing four-course gourmet meal, paired with lovely Paso Robles wines, the highlight of the evening was the passionate presentation by former “Club Kid” Abby Lopez who shared why her experiences at the Boys & Girls Clubs allowed her to reach her great potential. Abby is now an executive with G3 Enterprises — a major logis tics solutions business for the ag and wine industries — and she made it clear to all that the programs offered by BGCMCC made a huge difference in the success of her life and are criti cal for shaping the lives of young people who need the extra atten tion and support. Her delight ful presentation was followed by a video message from Rick Stollmeyer who announced “The Stollmeyer Challenge,” where he will match all dona tions made over the course of the year up to $300,000. Seeing the need for greater STEAM (science, technology, engineer ing, art, and math) as crucial for 21st-century kids and acknowl edging the greater need to serve more teens with Boys & Girls Clubs programming, funds raised through The Stollmeyer Challenge will help the organi zation enrich STEAM and teen programming at all of our clubs on the Central Coast.
With all that motivation, the final “fund a need” appeal to all attendees for the evening raised the lion’s share of dollars earned during the evening. Over $50,000 was secured during the paddle raise and the event earned $164,000 in total through ticket sales, sponsorships, a live and silent auction as well as an on-site raffle to win a Traeger smoker donated by Idlers Home.
Mistress of Ceremonies Gina Fitzpatrick, CEO of the Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce, kicked off the program and kept the evening fun and lively. Along with auctioneer Todd Ventura, they raised a spontaneous extra $5000 to perform an impromptu dance on stage! Emily Reneau, Development Manager for BGCMCC provided an update on all of the successes and mile stones the organization has completed over the course of year ensuring all attendees knew they were supporting a world class organization. Gene Runkle, BGCMCC Treasurer and co-chair of the event also warmly welcomed attendees and reminded everyone of their efforts to build and open the brand new Tom Maas Club house — a state of the art facility that is serving many kids every day since it opened in June. He went on to share that opening the new Clubhouse was the end of a chapter. Raising funds to keep and build new programs

Viola Charlotte Juarez-Frost: Unbelievable. I just placed rocks there last week, and I’m from San Jose. I love my walks around the lake. I thoroughly enjoy all the different rocks. I didn’t know how or why the rock snake was started until this article. The idea of painted rocks are to bring joy to those who see and read them. The city of Atascadero officials are officially killing the Joy. How the idea of removing the rocks snake ended up on some official's desk was no doubt introduced by an individual or individuals that felt the need to show their value. City officials work for the community, not the other way around. What’s next... removing dog parks, coffee houses, public gathering spaces, and walking paths... The removal of the rock snake at Atascadero Lake is just wrong.
recapture the idyllic conditions of a time that never existed or conditions that never were. How is it interfering with where cars park? Last I checked, cars can’t park on that side of the road anyway? Did someone bring their low rider sports car and try to park there (where you cannot and really should not park anyway) and get upset that there were rocks outside on dirt? I have seen high end cars parking there, and that pissed me off; your car does not belong on a walking, running, or bike path.

A YouGov poll last month found that three out of five Americans believe that political violence would increase in the next few years, and 43 percent of Americans believe a civil war will break out in the next 10 years. Adding fuel to the fire, Biden recently mocked “brave rightwing Americans” supporting gun rights stating they would need F-15’s to fight the government.

The backlash against the Pres ident’s speech stems from the double standards. His statements would ring true if universally applied, but they are transpar ently partisan. That guy driving by with a Trump and Ameri can flag? Right-wing fascist. The next car draped in BLM stickers?
Biden spent considerable time discussing the reality that our constitution is a living document and our democracy allows for the flexibility to grow and that while oftentimes this seems to be pain fully slow, our history is a testa ment to change. Yet, “MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards — back wards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contracep tion, no right to marry who you love … they promote authori tarian leaders and they fan the flames of political violence that are a threat to our personal rights, to the pursuit of justice, to the rule of law, to the very soul of this Somecountry.”romanticize the past, while others dream of a better future. Democratic gover nance requires compromise and consensus, oftentimes frustrat ing both sides yet always offer ing the choice to move forward. It is neither perfect nor expedi tious; however, it does allow for changes that advance society for the better. Calling out MAGA illustrates the courage needed to combat a dangerous scourge on our society, a scourge that turns its back on the future and kicks the can down the road for future generations to grapple with. It is a testament to retreat, not resolve. If we are not careful we run the risk of placing the repub lic in peril.
Progressive freedom fighter. Bad enough that the speech is polit ical grandstanding, which sadly both sides do, worse yet when the country is so divided, distrustful of its institutions, and hurting from so much bona fide violence. In fact, it’s Presidentdangerous.Biden during the campaign and his inaugural speech said he was going to be a great unifier, representing all Americans, but has utterly failed. He isn’t even trying. In a speech last month at a DNC rally regard ing the upcoming midterms he stated, “Your right to vote is on the ballot. Even the democracy.” Again, I understand whipping up the party faithful, and I’m not commenting on the many other topics he addressed. However, stating that voting Republican threatens democracy itself illus trates the fact that he is overtly and repeatedly labeling them as fascists, despite the spin.
Jessica Renee Lyttle: I thought it was the most lovely inclusive new attraction to A town lake. I have brought my son there many times to see it. Who has a problem with them?
Dianne Williams: No reason given for removal. Sad, sad, sad. Clean up the homeless dumps all along, El Camino Real!

Indeed, as he outlined in his speech in front of Independence Hall, he did not hesitate to proclaim “equality and democ racy are under assault.” He would continue “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic … they promote authoritarian leaders, and they fan the flames of political violence that are a threat to our personal rights, to the pursuit of justice, to the rule of law, to the very soul of the country.” This from a man who has spent his lifetime honing his reputation as an effective moder ator of competing political and policyWhenpositions.movements attempt to capitalize on the past, there is usually a dream-like quality to either misrepresentation or sheer ignorance of “the good old days.” This can be true in political contests at all levels of government, federal, state, and local. LANCE SIMMENS COMMENTARY
I have offered on subse quent anniversaries that Sept. 12 should be remembered as a national day of unity. Instead, we find ourselves seriously divided, enveloped in a toxic miasma of cultism that threatens the very core of our democratic system. Extracting ourselves from the current path and reinvigorat ing our quest to be the exem plar, the shining beacon on the hill, will require a commitment to forward-looking change to combat the ugly specter of authoritarianism that has currently found comfort and acceptance within the confines of the Republican Party’s embrace of ThroughTrumpism.alifetime of policy and political experience that includes over two decades work ing in Washington, D.C., in two presidential administrations and the U.S. Senate, and being from Philadelphia, where we proudly proclaimed that Joe Biden (who spent his childhood growing up in Scranton) essentially was the third senator from Pennsylvania, I have known and worked with the current president and have the utmost respect for him as a person and a politician.
Sandi Phillips: I love looking at & reading the rocks when I walk around the lake. It’s a treat!
Representative Maxine Waters called for protesters to “get more confrontational” should Derek Chauvin not be convicted. What is more confrontational than murder and arson? Prominent far-left activist Quintez Brown in February attempted to assas sinate a Jewish mayoral candi date in Kentucky with a Glock handgun (he is an outspoken gun control advocate). BLM crowd funded $100,000 for his bail. It would appear that some eschew political violence, just so long as it is by people on the other side of the aisle.
Barbie Lee Denman: So much more this city should worry about. Why are they worried about something that brings happiness and joy to the people that actually pay taxes.. oh and their salaries?
Kathy DiGrazia: I have personally placed over 100 rocks in this snake. They are all gone. Someone has been kicking them into the lake repeatedly! It’s not dogs; it’s not cars; it’s not weather; it is a person. I’ve seen him. I used to go retrieve them on our nightly walk, but it was taking its toll on me.
President Biden’s speech at Independence Hall said some true things, but it was the rank hypocrisy that was grat ing. He vilified Make America Great Again (MAGA) Republi cans, qualifying they weren’t the majority of Republicans. What? MAGA is a campaign slogan, which 77 million people voted for in the last election. This is the nub of the matter. If you believe in the 2nd Amendment, a secure border, or the right to life, you are MAGA. Tens of millions of Republicans heard their presi dent infer that they are fascists accordingly.Hesaidthey refuse to accept the election results. Some do. Yet he’s never made an impassioned speech about Democrats doing the same. Many Democrats assert Bush “stole” the 2000 election with “his” Supreme Court. Hillary and many prominent Democrats stated repeatedly that Trump stole the 2016 election, affirming Trump was an “illegitimate pres ident”, as recently as 2020. Stacey Abrams lost in Georgia's 2018 gubernatorial election and then claimed a fraudulent election, with past DNC chairman and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe falsely claiming votes had been taken from her. The Washington Post editorial board condemned them for pushing “unprovable allega tions that will contribute to the corrosion of trust.” Prophetic.
He has a deservedly solid reputation as a person of extreme
O.J. Crawford: Finally, all you graffiti artists get what you deserve.
really good response is needed, and really, everyone should ignore the city's Request and leave them! They don’t have time, as they should be focusing on cleaning up the homeless.
Anissa Hedges: What a joke. Who cares?! I run around the lake often and love seeing all the rocks. Get over yourself, Atown.
'Atascadero Rock Snake Findin g a New Home' Published Sept. 9 Public Comments Part One
Lisa Dinielli: The rock snake is one best things about Atascadero! It’s a community coming together and adding a bit of themselves by painting and contributing a piece of art.
Doug McCutcheon: It’s good to see our city being concerned with this important social issue; maybe after the rock snake is resolved, they can work on lesser issues like the homeless camps in our city or the drugs on our streets.

Kory Fontes: What did the rocks do to them?
From the Right and the Left: President Biden’s speech at Independence Hall: Biden smashes MAGA
Barbara Horne: I don’t understand why they want to remove the rocks. It’s positive; it’s inspirational. I think we need to add more.
Susan E Sears: These are the people we voted for making “serious” decisions for Atascadero!! Time to elect a whole new city council.
Butch Erler: Pretty sad that a rock snake is even an issue...pathetic actually, but homeless all over the city are ok...funny how they clear them out, and by nightfall, they come back to the same spot...across the street from Vons next to the car wash...nice camp in there now...and the city does nothing.
DON SCHMITZ COMMENTARY the From the Right
From
the president. Both sides would vociferously argue with us why they are Bidenright.stated, “Democracy cannot survive when one side believes there are only two outcomes to an election: either they win or they were cheated.” Very true, but he continued: “And that’s where MAGA Republi cans are today.” No more than Democrats, Mr. President.
Referencing the Jan. 6 mob that attacked our capitol, he stated, “There is no place for politi cal violence in America. Period. None. Ever." I couldn’t agree more, but where were Demo crats during the five months of the BLM/ANTIFA riots? A Prince ton study documented that there were 500 violent demonstrations following the murder of George Floyd (many more were peace ful), 25 people were murdered, 2,000 police officers were injured or blinded, monuments were torn down all over the country, and property damage topped $1 billion. They besieged federal court houses and burned down police stations. It was well-planned, and highly political. Yet Vice Presi dent Kamala Harris helped raise money to bail out participants.
Dalton Spjut: Most of them were gone last time I was there about a month ago. Was kinda bummed about it. But for real, get the homeless under control. Smh.

I showed the market card to my wife to see if she could make any sense of it and she looked at me like I had the brains of a sea anemone and the IQ of a bag of charcoal. "You idiot," she lovingly said, "someone just made a mistake and instead of typing a "b" they hit the "e" so instead of a "Special Lame Sale" it should be a "Special Lamb Sale."
I'm not criticizing or making fun of some overworked employee at an auction market because I've made so many similar mistakes in my career that if I had a dollar for every wrong key I've hit I'd be in the Forbes 400. And I can easily see how it could have been far worse. For example, if the typist had hit the "p" instead of the "b" they could have been flooded with antique dealers wanting to sell their old non-working lamps of every kind imaginable.

If it would have been a Special Cow Sale one wrong keystroke could have resulted in the sale of "Cops" or "Cons" and good luck to the pen riders trying to sort them out. Since the "r" and the "u" are kept apart by only by two keys on the keyboard I can see how a "Special Horse Sale" could easily become a "Special House Sale". Then you'd have every home owner in the country consigning to your "House Sale" who has a variable-rate interest loan and just had their monthly payment doubled. If you thought finding cow buyers was tough try finding a home buyer these days.

ou know how some women lovingly refer to their husbands as darling, dear, honey bunch or creampuff?
I remember dancing in the very first event with Dan Davis as my professional dance partner. Other dancers that year included Joanne Main, Jay DeCou, E.J. Rossi, Giovanni and Molly Comin, Jim Lewis, Jim Patterson, Tina Wysong, and Keith Schmidt. Little did we know how popular the event would become. That year we danced to benefit the Atascadero Library expansion and now, many nonprofits benefit.
ily because too many dairy cows who'd spent way too much time on concrete and could barely walk were being hauled to market. So I naturally assumed that if an auction market was having a "Special Lame Sale" the market would be inundated with gimpy dairy cows in such numbers that they'd have to sell seven nights and days straight to get through all the crippled cows. Not just because of the sheer volume but gimps tend to walk v-e-r-y s-l-o-w.

Beat batter and sugar in sepa rate bowl with electric mixer on high speed until light, about 3 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating with mixer to incorporate each egg before adding another.
