PASO ROBLES — The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees accepted a series of generous donations during its meeting on Tuesday, March 24, benefiting a range of student programs at Paso Robles High School.
A significant contribution came from the Swim Paso Association (SPA), which donated $10,000 to support the PRHS men’s and women’s swim and dive teams, as well as the water polo program. Additionally, in a combined effort, the 4A Foundation and SPA also contributed $168,545.81 to further bolster aquatics programs at PRHS, marking one of the largest donations of the evening.
Gwen Severson, representing the organization alongside other SPA board members, formally presented the donations to the board.
“The mission statement of SPA is to elevate aquatics in the Paso Robles community and surrounding region by making water safety, sport, and fitness accessible to all,” Severson shared. “We are incredibly grateful the Aquatics Complex was completed and as stewards of the donations raised in the community, we are thrilled to present this check for the total of $178,545.81 to the aquatics students and coaches of Paso Robles High School through their ASB accounts.”
Additional contributions included a $200 donation from Michelle Gilsdorf to support the PRHS Choir program, and $3,324.80 from the SLO County Foundation for Agricultural Awareness Inc., designated for the school’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) program.
The district also accepted a $266.97 donation from Ludus Technologies Inc. in support of the PRHS Drama Club.

PASO ROBLES — Runners buzzed into Camp Roberts last weekend to run in the 26th Annual Buzz Marathon held on Saturday, March 21. Now under the helm of the Paso Robles Veterans Foreign Wars Post (VFW), the fundraising event drew over 200 runners to support veterans.
Held at the Camp Roberts Army National Guard Reservation, the Buzz Marathon offered a rare opportunity for runners to travel a course not
typically open to the public. The race features a variety of distances, including a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, and a Kid’s Mile for children under 12. The course itself is a blend of paved roads, dirt trails, and packed gravel, winding through oak-dotted hillsides and alongside the Salinas and Nacimiento rivers.
The Buzz Marathon was founded in 2001 by longtime educator Eileen Rogers, who spent 34 of her 40 years of teaching at Lillian Larsen School in San Miguel. Frustrated by the need to personally fund her school’s athletic
programs, Rogers set out to create a sustainable fundraiser that would benefit her students.
“I got tired of funding my athletic program out of pocket,” Rogers recalled. “So I decided to create a fundraiser.”
Working alongside supporters at Camp Roberts, including a fellow parent and Gary McMaster, Rogers helped design and launch the inaugural race. By its second year, the course had been officially certified as a Boston Marathon qualifier, a designation it continues to hold today.

PASO ROBLES — After nearly two decades of bringing creativity, color, and a touch of whimsy to downtown Paso Robles, Firefly is preparing to close its doors — marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for its owners.
For mother-daughter team Laurel and Emily Miller, the decision to close Firefly after 20 years is not a bitter goodbye, but the start of a new era.
“We fully lived this one,” Emily shared. “We fully realized it, and it’s just time for a new chapter.”
Firefly first opened at the end of 2006, at a time
Today, the marathon is organized by the Paso Robles VFW Post, which took over operations as part of an effort to sustain the event while also supporting veterans and their families. Proceeds from the race now benefit soldiers, veterans, and Camp Roberts families, continuing the spirit of giving that defined its founding.
Post Commander Leo Castillo volunteered the VFW to take over the marathon after the Camp Roberts Base Commander said they could no longer organize the event. The Buzz
when downtown Paso Robles looked very different from what it does today. What is now a bustling destination for wine tourism, dining, and shopping was then relatively quiet, with limited retail options. Recognizing a gap and inspired by their shared love of creativity and discovery, Laurel and Emily decided to bring their long-imagined boutique to life.
“My mom, Laurel, and I had always daydreamed about opening our own store. I grew up going on shopping trips with her and my grandma, and we always loved finding creative places with interesting and unique items,” Emily said. “We used to talk about what our store would be like. When I moved back to the Central Coast in 2006, we decided that it was
the right time to finally start something together.”
The original Firefly was located at 13th and Park Street and operated as a hybrid fine art and craft gallery, complete with rotating art shows and lively openings. Over time, the business evolved, shifting toward a more traditional retail model while maintaining its artistic roots through imaginative displays and carefully curated merchandise. About a decade ago, the shop moved to its current location on 12th Street across from City Park — a transition Emily describes as a turning point.
“It was a good decision for us to move to the park,” she said. “Foot traffic increased so much when we

Marathon was able to raise over $10,000 this year to help pay for veteran services, including partial proceeds going into a fund for the anticipated Veterans Monument to be installed at Veterans Park.
Castillo was especially thankful to marathon participant Michael Davis, who donated $1,500 to the Buzz Marathon.
Davis, 72, planned to have the Buzz Marathon as his 100th marathon. During his run on Satur -
day, Davis stopped his race to help another runner receive medical services because his heart rate was spiking.
“He stopped his own personal race to give aid to someone,” Castillo said. “I just think that speaks highly of the goodness of who he is.”
The oldest runner at the race was Carl Outzen who, at 87 years old, ran the half-marathon. Jay Pomares took first place for the marathon, qualifying to run in Boston.
The Buzz Marathon remains true to its original charm. Unlike large urban races lined with cheering
crowds, this event offers a quieter, more reflective experience.
“I love this marathon because it’s environmental,” Rogers said. “Some people don’t like it because there’s no crowds to cheer them on. But you commune with nature.”
Paso Robles High School senior Juan Jesus Hernandez Roman, ran the 5K at the Buzz Marathon on Saturday. He came in first for his age group at the race.
Roman told Paso Robles Press that he has been enjoying his track season so far, saying, “Overall, I have my team and my coaches with me, so
it’s very good.”
He added that running the Buzz Marathon reminded him how much he enjoys running and being able to appreciate nature, how relaxing it is for him.
While being interviewed, Roman wanted to take an opportunity to remind people to “Never doubt your ability to do something, and it’s always good just to get out there and do something new.”
Runners often encounter wildlife along the course, from grazing sheep used for fire prevention to elk and wild pigs roaming the landscape.
The peaceful surroundings and natural beauty have become a defining feature of the race — and a major draw for returning participants. In fact, many runners have completed the Buzz Marathon 15 times or more, a testament to its enduring appeal.
For Rogers, seeing former students return to run the race she created is especially meaningful. Though the event has grown beyond its original purpose as a school fundraiser, its impact continues to ripple through the community.
“That’s my legacy to the school,” she said. “The community loved it.”
equipped to handle the volume of meals served and does not support on-site food preparation. Historically, food service staff have had to walk
moved, which was so nice.”
From the early days of downtown to the bustling hub it is today, the boutique became both a witness to and participant in the area’s transformation. Emily, who initially worked in the wine industry, recalls recognizing early on that Paso Robles was on the cusp of something bigger.
“People were coming to Paso to try wines, and I [thought] this is really cool,” Emily explains. “We wanted to be a part of the downtown resurgence and to provide locals and tourists with a fun spot to find beautiful and affordable things.”
Firefly also proved resilient through challenging times. The business opened just before the 2008 financial crisis and later weathered the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Emily credits a mix of determination and community support for helping them endure.
“The first one, honestly, was pure stubbornness on our part,”
across the street to Glen Speck Elementary School, where meals are prepared. The site has also experienced staffing challenges, with six different employees working in the kitchen over the past four years, including two former food service supervisors.
Planned next steps include collaborating with architect Gary Gery to develop a design that meets requirements set by the San Luis Obispo County Department of Environmental Health. The design process will also evaluate kitchen equipment options compatible with existing
electrical and plumbing systems.
The presentation was provided for informational purposes only. The proposed kitchen improvements are expected to return to the board for action at its April 28 meeting and will be listed on the consent agenda.
Emily laughed. “We were just determined to keep going ... the second time, stubbornness definitely played a part as well, but I really do also need to give credit to our landlord [who] was incredibly kind and very helpful ... I’ll never forget that.”
Beyond business success, Firefly became a deeply personal journey for both Laurel and Emily. Working side by side for two decades strengthened their bond in ways they never anticipated. As Firefly prepares to close,
the outpouring of support from the community has been both overwhelming and deeply meaningful.
“Closing has really made me see how many people really did care about us and what we were doing,
Paso Robles Press
and it’s been so touching,” Emily said. “I really appreciate everyone that’s come out and said hi to us.”
The shop’s closure will also mark the end of beloved traditions, including its participation in downtown
events like Elegant Evening — something Emily says she will especially miss. Looking ahead, both women are embracing what comes next. Emily is eager to explore new creative challenges, while Laurel looks forward to a more relaxed pace of life, spending time with family, gardening, traveling, and enjoying retirement.
“We’ve been doing [this] for a really long time … the bulk of my adult life,” Emily reflected. “I did everything I wanted to do, and I [am] ready to try some new stuff.” Firefly will not be sold or passed on to new ownership; instead, the space will simply close, leaving behind space for a new business to step in and make their mark on Downtown Paso Robles. For Emily, the experience has been nothing short of transformative.
“It’s been a very important chapter in our lives,” she said. “I think it’s completely changed us both as people in positive ways.”

West Paso named first Firewise USA® Community in Paso Robles
West Paso Robles has officially been designated as the city’s first Firewise USA® community, according to Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services.
The designation, made in partnership with the West Paso Robles Firewise Board, applies to all city properties west of Vine Street, from 1st to 24th streets. It recognizes the neighborhood’s efforts to reduce wildfire risk through mitigation, community engagement, and home hardening.
Firewise USA® is a national program administered by the National Fire Protection Association that supports communities in organizing wildfire preparedness efforts and strengthening collaboration with fire agencies.
Under California’s “Safer from Wildfires” regulations, insurance companies are required to recognize Firewise-designated communities, which may make residents eligible for insurance discounts.
Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services credited the Paso Robles Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for assisting with the application, along with Firewise Board members Dan Jones, Steve Eorio, Jill Corgill, Rick Goree, John Hamon, and Gina Grieb for their leadership.
Officials say the designation marks a key step in improving
wildfire resilience on the city’s west side and expressed plans to expand Firewise participation to other neighborhoods.

RECORD
Bob Keith Thomas, beloved dad, grandpa, and greatgrandpa, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026. He dearly missed his wife Beverly, who preceded him in late December, and every night in his prayers would say “good night, Bev; I’m on my way.”
Bob was born on July 6, 1933, in Des Moines, Iowa. His nickname was “bones” because he was always tall and thin. He
enjoyed playing basketball and baseball, and during the winter months, ice skating and hockey. Bob accepted Jesus as his savior at the age of 12, and his faith remained steadfast his entire life.
Bob graduated from East High School in Des Moines in 1951 and decided, instead of waiting to be drafted into the Army, he preferred joining the Air Force and eventually became a pilot simulator trainer during the Korean War era. He especially enjoyed his time in Germany, where he could travel throughout Europe on weekends.
After being honorably discharged, Bob relocated to Downey, California, where he later met his wife, Beverly, on a blind date, and the two were married in 1958. They bought their first home in Downey for $11k!
PRHS cheer team launches ‘Egg My Yard’ fundraiser
The Paso Robles High School Varsity Cheer is bringing Easter fun to the community with its “Egg My Yard” fundraiser, offering families a convenient and festive way to celebrate the holiday.
Through the program, cheerleaders will fill participating yards with colorful plastic eggs filled with candy and small toys, creating a ready-made Easter egg hunt for children to discover on Easter morning.
Families can choose from packages ranging from 25 to 100 eggs, with options to customize egg placement, hiding style, or delivery for do-it-yourself hunts. Orders must be submitted by April 1 at 8 p.m., and payment is required to confirm bookings.
Proceeds will support the team’s participation in UCA Cheer Camp,

A public auction sale to the highest bidder for cash, or cash equivalent if deemed acceptable to the trustee, cashier’s check drawn on a state or national bank, check drawn by state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, or savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 to the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state, will be held by duly appointed trustee. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty,
All bidders, at the date, time, and place of the scheduled sale, will be required to show satisfactory support to the auctioneer of their ability to pay the amount they intend to bid, unless arrangements have been made with the trustee prior to the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL
BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO
PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property,
Bob joined the Downey Fire Department in July 1960 and would later become an Engineer and finally Captain, serving until his retirement in July 1988. His career included teaching Fire Science classes at Rio Hondo College and the ROTC program for the Downey Unified School District. Bob and his wife, Beverly, would eventually move to Paso Robles to enjoy retirement.
In his 40s, Bob took to running and between 1978 at the age of 45 until he was well into his 70s, Bob ran multiple half-marathons and his first marathon at the age of 70! His favorite run was the Disneyland half-marathon, where eventually he took 4th place for runners over 70. He often ran the Turkey Trot 5 K fundraiser for Paso Robles High School. Bob could be seen running all

He won several Blue Ribbons from various state fairs and finished his last piece of artwork in 2025 for his 17th great-grandchild. Over the years, Bob had completed multiple cross-stitch pieces for his grandchildren, friends, and church, including The Last Supper that hangs in the foyer of Calvary Chapel Paso Robles. Bob was an active member at the First Baptist Church of Downey, frequently driving kids to Hume Lake, winter camp, or the beach. After relocating to Paso Robles, he and his wife joined the First Baptist of Paso Robles. Both Bob and Bev enjoyed working with the kids Awanas program, Vacation Bible School, and hosting in-house Bible studies.

Bob was known for being young at heart, always a sense of humor, friendly and adventurous. He strived to serve Jesus in everything he did. For him, life was easy; just do the right thing. His truck bumper sticker said it all; “God said it, I believe it, that settles it,” and he truly lived by that.
Bob is survived by his children, Kelly Thomas Crowell, Karyn Thomas Flutts, Charles Thomas, grand-children Kris Linscott, Krystal Linscott Valdez, Julianne Linscott Manacmul, Jonathan Flutts, Josia Flutts Jolliff, Amy Crowell Miranda, Sara Thomas Kennedy, Emily, Isabelle, and Claire Thomas and 17 great-grandchildren. Bob and Beverly leave a beautiful legacy of love and family.
Services for them will be Saturday, April 11, at 10 AM at the First Baptist Church of Paso Robles.
at a critical time. In addition to providing safe housing, the center will offer services including case management, a bathtub for families with children, job training, and programs for children.
“We are incredibly excited and deeply grateful to see this dedicated family wing taking shape,” said Wendy Lewis, CEO of ECHO. “This project reflects our commitment to meeting the growing need for family shelter in our community while creating lasting pathways to stability. Thanks to the Balay Ko Foundation and the tremendous support of our community, we are taking bold, tangible steps to change lives. This is more than construction — it’s a promise that families facing crisis will find safety, stability, and a path forward.”
The project is part of ECHO’s Building Hope & Home Campaign, which has raised over 63% of its $6 million goal. Community members are invited to support the project by donating at echoshelter.org
