TEMPLETON — The Templeton Historical Museum Society hosted its annual fundraising event, “Some Like It Hot,” on Saturday, March 14, drawing community members to a day full of history, food, and fun. The event featured a ranch branding activity honoring local cattle ranchers, a chili competition showcasing the area’s best home cooks, and a vintage silent auction.

This year marked a shift from past traditions. Instead of the usual blacksmithing demon-

stration, the museum incorporated brand burning, allowing participants to leave their mark on Templeton history. Guests without an existing brand could purchase a character, while chili tastings were available for $1 per sample. Participants could compete in the cookoff or simply enjoy sampling the wide variety of entries.

Laura Lowe Brooks, chairperson of the museum, explained the reasoning behind the change.

“Last year was a blacksmithing competition with blacksmiths from across the state.

It’s a very labor-intensive event to put together,” Brooks said.

“We were looking around the museum and realizing that all the 200-some odd brands

Pappy McGregor’s celebrates 20 years of St. Patrick’s Day tradition

Local pub continues to bring generations together in downtown Paso Robles

PASO ROBLES — Before the sun rises each March 17, a line begins to form along Pine Street. By 6 a.m., crowds dressed headto-toe in green pack the sidewalk, eagerly waiting for the doors to open at Pappy McGregor’s. For 20 years, this early-morning ritual has marked not only St. Patrick’s Day, but also the anniversary of one of Paso Robles’ favorite gathering places. What began as an opening-day experiment in 2006 has grown into a can’t-miss annual celebration, drawing thousands of visitors throughout the day.

Office ceremony honors deputies, correctional staff, and volunteers for lifesaving actions and investigative achievements

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY —

On Thursday, March 12, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office held its Annual Awards Ceremony at the San Luis Obispo Veterans Memorial Hall, honoring members of the department for outstanding service, exceptional performance, and acts of bravery during 2025. The event recognized deputies, detectives, correctional staff, civilian personnel, and volunteers for their

dedication to public safety and commitment to the community.

“We have an embarrassment of riches as far as the phenomenal work that our men and women do on the daily basis,”

SLO County Undersheriff Chad Nicholson shared to open the ceremony. “We, in law enforcement, have a bad habit of not putting out the word every single day of all the positive things that are done. Life-changing things that are done by our men and women every single day ... I want to congratulate everybody on the awards that they’re going to receive today, all the employees of the year, all of our volunteers and their years of service.”

The department’s Employees of the Year for 2025 were Correctional Deputy Joel

Avila, Dispatcher III Clayton Cullen, and Deputy Jacob Gersh. Each demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication in their respective roles, consistently going above and beyond to support both colleagues and the community.

Among the highest honors presented was the Medal of Valor, awarded to Deputy Bryan Martinez Guzman for his courageous response to a shooting incident near Templeton High School. During the event, Martinez confronted an armed suspect who had fired at deputies, successfully subduing the individual and preventing further harm.

Several deputies and senior deputies, including Tyler Hammon, Jared Hamman, Jerrod Place, Mitchell Fessler, Dennis

“That first day, we didn’t understand if anybody would show up or everybody would show up,” Schmit said. “We walked outside a few minutes before 6 a.m. and there’s over 100 people waiting out in front for us to open on our very first day of business.”

Co-owner Donovan Schmit recalls the uncertainty leading up to that very first morning. He and his cousin and business partner Troy Larkin, had taken over the space just months earlier and decided to do something unconventional: open an Irish pub at 6 a.m. on St. Patrick’s Day.

PASO ROBLES — Some updates could soon be on the way for Norma’s Alley, the downtown corridor located between Pine and Park streets.

The alleyway, which is home to the Paso Robles Main Street Association office and several local businesses, carries a lot of history for the city, at one time being the direct center of downtown.

The alley was formally dedicated on April 5, 2022, when the City of Paso Robles unveiled the Norma’s Alley archway along Pine Street in honor of Norma Moye. Moye, a longtime executive director of the Main Street Association and a dedicated advocate for downtown, played a key role in shaping the city’s historic core. She passed away on Dec. 15, 2025, at the age of 92, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the community she helped cultivate.

The archway itself was designed and built by local artist Dale Evers as a tribute to Moye. Funding for the project was provided by down-

town property and business owners Robert Gilson and Nick Tompkins. Although initially delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the installation was completed in February 2022 after a two-year process.

In the 2024 Economic Development Strategic Plan, Norma’s Alley was recommended to receive a beautification treatment. The Paso Robles Planning Commission has recommended that the City Council form an ad hoc committee to explore a potential revitalization plan for Norma’s Alley.

The task force will be responsible for gathering public input, identifying quick and long-term fixes, and also funding for the projects.

Paso Robles Main Street Board President Margaret Heely-Holstine shared her excitement for some enhancements to come to the alleyway, “I am so excited that you guys are bringing it forward and looking at it.”

From that moment, a tradition was born.

“We didn’t have time to build into the business. It was just gangbusters,” Schmit said. “Now 20 years later, it’s a tradition that will probably always continue.”

Each year, approximately between 3,000 and 5,000 people pass through the pub’s doors on St. Patrick’s Day. Despite the crowds, Schmit notes the atmosphere remains overwhelmingly positive.

“We have less problems on St. Paddy’s Day than we do other days of the year,” he said. “Everybody’s in a great mood. They’re just here to celebrate.”

That celebratory spirit is fueled by classic Irish drinks. Guinness reigns supreme, alongside Jameson whiskey, Irish coffees, and festive favorites like Irish car bombs. And of course, green beer made in partnership with BarrelHouse Brewing Co.

But Pappy McGregor’s is more than just a oncea-year destination. Schmit describes it as a “gastropub,” a place that takes pride in both its food and drink while offering a welcoming space for the

community year-round.

That sense of community has been at the heart of the business since its inception and even before. Schmit and Larkin’s vision was shaped by their travels, where they fell in love with the concept of pubs as communal gathering spaces.

Originally, however, an Irish pub wasn’t the plan. The pair had owned and operated Schooners in Cayucos and were encouraged to bring a seafood concept to Paso Robles. But when they stepped into the historic Pine Street building, at the time home to Busi’s, and they saw the over a century

old bar, their vision for the space shifted.

“This just did not look like a seafood restaurant. This looks like an Irish pub. And like a light bulb went off,” Schmit shares.

Over the years, the pub has become a backdrop for countless life moments. Schmit recalls couples who met there on opening day and are now celebrating 20 years together. Others return annually, wearing old event T-shirts as badges of loyalty and nostalgia.

As Pappy McGregor’s marks its 20th anniversary, Schmit is quick to credit the community for its longevity.

“We are so grateful for their [the community’s] support for 20 years. To make it to 20 years is pretty special,” he said. “Without the support of the locals and the different generations that they keep coming in, without them, I don’t know if we could be here 20 years later. A huge thank you to Paso and all the people that support us.”

And come next St. Patrick’s Day, long before most alarms go off, the line on Pine Street will likely form once again — proof that some traditions are worth waking up early for.

Brooks highlighted that the event is designed to bring new people into Templeton and encourage them to learn about the town’s history.

“We really are encouraging to get lots of new people to Templeton. We

want them to be in here, learn from what’s happened in the past, learn about their futures, and like we say, mingle it all together,” Brooks shared.

“It’s just a really fun way of bringing people and food and talent together.”

The museum relies on events like “Some Like It Hot” to support its operations and future growth.

“We are trying to support everything,” Brooks explained. “Then hope-

In addition to operational awards, the ceremony also recognized years of dedicated service.

The ceremony highlighted the professionalism, courage, and commitment demonstrated by all members of the SLO County Sheriff’s Office. SLO County Sheriff Ian Parkinson said, “There’s no better moment than today for this ceremony, to honor the dedication of employees and the amount of years of service, to recognize specific events of heroism, for everybody here to actually enjoy it, and hear the story, every year is probably one of my highlights. Central Coast Aquarium brings hands-on ocean experience to Paso Robles seniors

Paso Robles residents at Creston Village Assisted Living and Memory Care will get a rare chance to touch starfish and other sea creatures when the Central Coast Aquarium brings the ocean to them on Thursday, March 26, at 10 a.m.

Many Creston Village residents haven’t physically interacted with ocean life in years. While they enjoy scenic views and meals by the beach, trips to the nearest aquarium in Avila Beach — about 25 miles away— can be difficult. The aquarium team, arranged by Julie Tacker, Director of Engagement, is reversing that journey to deliver a hands-on marine experience directly to the community.

The visit will allow seniors to interact with marine animals without leaving Paso Robles, providing both educational and sensory enrichment.

Mayor Charles and Melissa Bourbeau announce new ‘Barbie Butz Junior Award’ honoring a legacy of service

In celebration of a lifetime devoted to community service, Atascadero Mayor Charles Bourbeau and his wife, Melissa Bourbeau, have established a new annual community honor: the Barbie Butz Junior Award. The award recognizes a member of the community who exemplifies the same extraordinary dedication, compassion, and impact that have defined the life of beloved local leader Barbie Butz.

The Barbie Butz Junior Award will be presented annually to a community servant following in Barbie’s path — making a meaningful difference in the lives of others through service, leadership, and volunteerism.

In addition to the recognition, the recipient will receive $5,000 to donate to the charity of their choice, further extending the beneficial work that Barbie has modeled for decades.

The inaugural award was presented during Barbie’s 90th birthday celebration, held at the historic Atascadero Printery. The afternoon was filled with gratitude and reflection, honoring Barbie’s remarkable contributions to the Atascadero community and region.

The first recipient of the Barbie Butz Junior Award is Karen McNamara, president of the Atascadero Printery Foundation and a multiple-year chair of Atascadero Colony Days, along with her extensive involvement in numerous other local organizations. McNamara was recognized for her volunteer efforts, leadership, and commitment to preserving Atascadero’s history and restoring the Printery into a valuable resource for the community.

“Barbie Butz has set a very high standard of service,” said Mayor Bourbeau. “This award ensures her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders and volunteers in our community.”

The Barbie Butz Junior Award stands as a lasting tribute to a life of generosity and civic dedication, and as a beacon encouraging others to serve with heart, humility, and purpose.

A permanent plaque with recipients’ names will hang in the Atascadero Printery — the upcoming public Community Center that will provide space for events and programming in arts and culture, education, wellness, entertainment, and much more for the entire region to use.

For more information about the award or future nominations, contact Charles Bourbeau at (805) 703-3809

servicing business. In the spring of 1968, Jim and Willie moved from Calabasas to Big Bear Lake, where they purchased Minder Lumber Company, later renaming it Riffenburgh Lumber Company. They brought with them their three sons at the time, Ernie, Karl and Duane. A fourth son, Walter (“Wally”), was subsequently born into the family in 1970.

Jim became a member of the Rotary Club of Big Bear Lake. He served a term as president of the club for the year of 197475, and was later honored with the Rotary designation of Paul

Harris Fellow. Jim’s further civic engagements included the Chamber of Commerce, the Big Bear Municipal Water District, and the project to widen the highway through town. He was also well-known in the Valley for his automobile collection, consisting mostly of classic Lincolns, as well as other notable cars.

The City of Atascadero has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the design and installation of holiday lighting in the trees at the historic downtown Sunken Gardens. The project aims to transform the park into a festive environment, with lighting designs that complement Historical City Hall as a seasonal backdrop.

Interested contractors are invited to submit written proposals by Tuesday, March 31, at 5 p.m. The selected contractor will be responsible for design, installation, maintenance, removal, packaging, and transport of all holiday lighting features, which will remain the property of the contractor. The initial contract term is one year, with options to extend up to three years in one-year increments.

A voluntary pre-bid site visit will take place on Wednesday, March 24, at 2 p.m. at City Hall, 6500 Palma Ave., offering interested firms an opportunity to view the site and ask questions of city staff.

Atascadero’s El Camino Real Project receives statewide recognition

The City of Atascadero’s El Camino Real Downtown Parking and Safety Enhancements

Project (The ECR Project) has been honored with the Efficient and Sustainable Road Maintenance, Construction, and Reconstruction Projects award by the League of California Cities, County Engineers Association of California, and the California State Association of Counties during the Cal Cities Public Works Officers Institute.

The project revitalized a 0.6-mile segment of El Camino Real in downtown Atascadero, adding safety enhancements, expanded parking, and streetscape improvements designed to support economic activity while emphasizing an “authentic Atascadero” character.

Key features include:

• Upgraded crosswalks and a new signalized crossing at East Mall

Approximately 100 additional free parking spaces, including ADA-accessible spots

• ADA-compliant sidewalks and driveways

• Decorative pendant lighting and upgraded streetlights

Landscaping and over 25 new street trees

The ECR Project, initiated in 2017, was shaped through extensive community engagement with residents, businesses, and stakeholders. Funding came in part from the offices of Sen. Monique Laird, Congressman Jimmy Panetta, and the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments. The project was completed on time and within budget.

On March 6, the Atascadero Police Department arrested Michael Josiah Brown, 20, of Grover Beach, in connection with multiple graffiti incidents in downtown Atascadero.

Around 1:30 a.m., a police sergeant spotted Brown allegedly spray-painting graffiti on the wall of a local business in the 5900 block of Entrada Avenue. When approached, Brown fled the scene but was later found hiding behind Malibu Brew on West Mall and taken into custody without incident.

Investigators discovered fresh graffiti at two nearby businesses displaying the name of Brown’s band. Officers believe the vandalism was done to promote the band after a performance earlier that evening.

Brown was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail for felony vandalism and misdemeanor resisting, obstructing, or delaying a peace officer. The investigation remains active as officers work to identify any accomplices.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Atascadero Police Department at (805) 461-5051.

Death investigation in Cambria ruled accidental

On Feb. 8, deputies responded to a residence in the 8100 block of Lone Palm Drive, Cambria, after a call for service led to the discovery of two deceased individuals. The victims were identified as John Anthony Ruskey III, 53, of Goleta, and Kristen Kelly Ruskey, 49, of Goleta.

An autopsy and toxicology testing determined that John Ruskey died from the toxic effects of carbon monoxide, while Kristen Ruskey died from the toxic effects of carbon monoxide and ethanol. Both deaths have been ruled accidental. Investigators noted that a combination carbon monoxide/smoke detector was present in the room but found to be disconnected.

Next of kin have been notified. No suspect is involved, and no further information is available at this time.

County DA Dan Dow urges passage of AB 46 to protect crime victims

LINDA J. WINCHELL

Memorial Service Saturday, March 21, 2026 10:00 AM

San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow, who also serves as president of the California District Attorneys Association, is calling on the California Legislature to pass Assembly Bill 46 (AB 46) to reform mental health diversion laws and restore judicial discretion for violent and highrisk offenders.

AB 46 would amend Penal Code section 1001.36, allowing judges to deny diversion when defendants pose a substantial risk to public safety or when proposed treatment plans are not clinically appropriate. The measure is designed to protect victims, reduce repeat offenses, and ensure accountability while still providing treatment for individuals with genuine mental health needs.

Recent cases across California illustrate the risks of current diversion laws. Defendants previously granted mental health diversion have subsequently committed murders, stabbings, carjackings, and assaults, highlighting the urgent need for reform to safeguard communities and honor victims’ rights.

Call to Action: Dow urges Californians to contact their State Assemblymember and State Senator to vote YES on AB 46 and help restore judicial discretion, protect crime victims, and close dangerous loopholes in mental health diversion law.

Constituents can find their representatives at assembly. ca.gov and senate.ca.gov

AB 46 aims to create a balanced system where treatment is provided to those in need while keeping communities and victims safe from repeat violent offenders.

Assistance League® of San Luis Obispo County celebrates 30 years

Assistance League of San Luis Obispo County marks 30 years of service to local students, recently earning recognition as “Best of Central Coast Nonprofit” by the SLO Tribune

Since its founding, ALSLOC has provided new clothing to more than 42,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade, helping children in need build confidence, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

“The passion and dedication of the members of our organization is as strong today as it was 30 years ago,” said Barbie Butz, the founding president of Assistance League of San Luis Obispo County. “What’s changed — and what we are ever grateful for — is the expanded number of volunteers, donors, and partnerships that have all led to our ability to grow from helping 130 students in our first year to now serving more than 2,100 students in need. To bring that number to life, just think about filling the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center twice over.”

ALSLOC also launched the Access to Career Education

DEATHS ROSALVA RIOS GOMEZ, Age 70, of Nipomo passed away on 03/07/2026. Services are in the care of Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel of Grover Beach.

(ACE) scholarship program in 2023, providing local high school graduates financial support for career education and trades programs at Cuesta College. This year, the organization awarded $10,000 in scholarships.

Funding for ALSLOC programs comes from grants, private donations, and the Assistance League Thrift Store, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Last year, ALSLOC contributed $694,015 in value to the community, including nearly 25,000 volunteer hours. The chapter is supported by more than 125 members and volunteers.

“As the needs of students in San Luis Obispo County continue to grow — particularly as the percentage of students living at or below the poverty line has increased from 48% to 53% — we remain committed to expanding our capacity to serve,” said Chapter President Sharon Darnton. “We invite community members to learn more about our mission, membership opportunities, and ways to support our work.” For more information, membership opportunities, or ways to support ALSLOC, visit alslocounty.org
