In 1951, twenty-seven-thousanddollars got them a 3-bedroom home on an acre of land and a donkey. In the decades to follow, Mary and Ed Cleaveland would raise a family, build a happy life, and help to define Hidden Hills along the way.

FAMILY FIRST

THE INCREDIBLE LIFE AND TANGIBLE LEGACY OF HIDDEN HILLS’ CLEAVELAND FAMILY

For 104 years, when people heard the name Mary Cleaveland, images of kindness, perseverance and reliability came to mind. Along with her husband Edwin Cleaveland, she was a pioneer to the development of Hidden Hills and a cornerstone

of its community. Being one of five sisters, from a young age, she was ingrained with the importance of family and community. She was born in Los Angeles, California in 1916, to Joseph Pitchford and Swiss immigrant Anna Lyrermann. Early on into Mary’s childhood Anna fell ill and passed away, with

Joseph tragically killed in an auto accident soon after. All the sisters were forced to uproot from their Los Angeles home and move to remote Annandale, Minnesota to live on a farm with their aunt and uncle. Forced to quickly adjust, she generated a strong work ethic tending to chores on the Minnesota

farm and graduated Annandale high school in 1934. But anxious to move onto new possibilities a still young Mary joined a traveling cosmetic sales group. Her fearless spirit, which would become her most notable trait, now took her all the way to live in Spokane, Washington.

In 1937, Mary got a call from her sister Marie who was pregnant and about to give birth to her first child. With her husband being overseas and unable to care for her in this vulnerable time, Marie immediately turned to Mary, the stabilizing force of the family. Without a hesitation, Mary packed her bags and moved down to Los

Angeles to be with her sister. To support them, she enrolled into a business school and started working as a legal secretary. In addition, she worked as a car hop at a local diner where she met the dashing, Hollywood set designer Edwin Cleaveland.

Ed reportedly said that with her beauty and magnetic charm “Mary had many boyfriends to fight off”. Even to the point of him stopping by her home one time and finding three other suitors in the living room eating the chocolates he had given her the night before. But ultimately Ed captured her heart, and the couple got married April 16 1941. They moved to Burbank and lived comfortably there

for 10 years. Ed’s set designing career at the “Golden Era” of MGM studios had taken him to many heights, working on films for stars such as Judy Garland, Clark Gable and Gregory Peck. But ever since he was sixteen Ed’s dream had been to be an architect, so with Mary’s support, Ed began branching out to architecture.

In early 1950, still cultivating his architectural practice, Ed began working in the remote area fittingly called Hidden Hills. Specifically, designing a home with Dr. Mogan, who would later go on to being known as one the first residents of Hidden Hills. With Ed immediately falling in love with the openness of the land, in early 1951 Mary

with Ed serving as the planning commissioner from 1961-1978. With this sharp increase of people in the area, Mary, having young mothers and children in mind, began to be concerned about the security of the construction sites.

Mary enjoyed being an active supporter of the Hidden Hills community while raising her two sons James and Thomas. She was known to always be one of the first to lend a helping hand, leading by example and strengthening an overall tight-knit sense of community. An active member of leading the 4H Club, she began the tradition of an annual Pancake Breakfast and Christmas Drive, in which she gathered toys and food for neighborhood children to give out to the less fortunate. Also known for her sense of humor, at one point she dressed herself up

as a clown to perform in a 4th of July fund raiser parade. Having no idea what she had gotten herself into, she ended up rolling down Ventura Boulevard on a scooter for two miles, almost passing out from heat exhaustion. In which she later called “dedication”.

Looking into her finances as her children grew into their teen years,

Mary realized she needed to start creating a second income. She always was one who was willing to do whatever she had to for those she loved without ever having second thought. Knowing that though Ed was the artist, she was the business mind and decided to direct her talents to Real Estate. She enrolled in Real Estate school and quickly started working with local

real-estate companies. With her knowledge of architecture given to her by Ed, coupled with her charm and savvy business sense, Mary was soon offered the position of “Hidden Hills Specialist” in her home area. Working there until she was seventy-three.

Mary and Ed were both beloved by all who came across their path, two true driving pulses within their community, to the point with Hidden Hills founder, A.E Hanson, worked with Ed on architectural projects until he was 90 years old. Along with Mary making many friends in her Real Estate career, from a young Michael Landon with coffee colored curls and a striped t-shirt running up to her driveway to say “hello”, to having spirited banters with next-door neighbor Marvin Gaye. Her lighthearted sense of humor coupled with her stable sense of reliability left her to be loved by all. If there was a way, she would find it, and if there was not a way she would forge on. She was the anchor, while also being the bright, beaming sail to

withstand the forces of the wind. For when there seemed to be no direction, people looked to her and she became the direction. She lived her 104 years on this earth in that unwavering manner, from keeping the family going after Ed’s passing in 2001, to her incredible life’s story being an inspiration to her grandchildren, Thomas and Jacqueline. Even into her 100’s she would still sit on the porch of “the house with a stop-sign”, with a warm glow in her eyes waving

hello to all who turned their heads to look. Mary’s 104-year legacy will never be forgotten, as one passes through it every time they enter the Long Valley Gate. HH

THE HIDDEN HILLS FARMERS MARKET CELEBRATES ITS ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

On March 3rd, The Hidden Hills Farmers Market celebrates its first full year. Launched at the onset of a worldwide pandemic, this new community gathering was expected to cease quickly. But it did not. These folks pivoted to a true essential business, helping to keep us fed and sane through the world’s toughest year, delivering to all who couldn’t leave their homes (before delivery was a thing!). Thank you to all of the Farmers Market vendors who have stuck it out with us, even when few showed up. No doubt that when we all get back to normal, with will be a treasured local tradition where we can all gather once again!

Palm Springs has been Hollywood’s backyard retreat as long as there has been a Hollywood. With that insight, Los Angeles Architect William J. Dodd built twin estates—The Willows and The Bishop House—in 1925 for two very private and wealthy L.A. couples. This elegantly landscaped and constructed paradise is discreetly tucked away behind impressive iron gates just two blocks from Palm Springs’ downtown. Over time, various industry luminaries (such as Marion Davies, introduced to a new generation of cinephiles in the David Fincher film Mank) took up residence or stayed as guests (Paul Thomas Anderson penned his Academy Award-winning screenplay, There Will Be Blood, in the patio of The Library Room suite).

GETTING READY for SPRING & SUMMER

AS THE TEMPERATURES START TO WARM UP, PEOPLE AND PETS ALIKE BEGIN SPENDING MORE TIME OUTDOORS. BUT WE AREN’T THE ONLY ONES EMERGING FROM WINTER - FLEAS, TICKS, MOSQUITOES, AND SNAKES ARE ALSO BECOMING MORE ACTIVE THIS TIME OF YEAR.

FLEAS AND TICKS - In Southern California, fleas and ticks are active year round due to our temperate climate. However, they do become more active as temperatures warm up in the spring and summer months. Ticks can transmit dangerous diseases to humans and pets such as Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Fleas transmit disease and often cause severe itching and even hair loss. Dogs should be on a year round flea and tick preventative to prevent infestation. There are many over the counter topical formulations available at pet stores, and even grocery stores. Beware though, that fleas have begun to develop resistance to some of the medications present in these over the counter flea preventatives due to their widespread use. Prescription oral medications prescribed by your veterinarian are often the most

effective flea and tick prevention. These medications come in a flavorful chew and are given monthly, or sometimes every three months. These preventatives are specially formulated to effectively kill fleas and ticks quickly, while other topical products can take days to kill all the fleas on your dog. It’s important to remember to treat your indoor furry pets as well. Dogs and people can unintentionally carry fleas and ticks into the home which can then infest the untreated animals in the household. Indoor only cats who have never gone outside in their lives can become infested with fleas, so it is important to treat every pet in the household. It is also important to check your dog (and yourself!) for ticks after coming home from a hike or anywhere where they have come into contact with vegetation (this could even mean your backyard). Ticks are easy to remove once you

find them, but they can be tricky to spot sometimes, especially on dark colored, long haired dogs.

What to do if you find your pets have a flea infestation? The first thing to do is call your vet so that you can schedule an appointment to get a prescription for flea and tick medication. These types of medications not only kill the fleas and ticks that are currently biting, but they also prevent further infestations. The best way to reduce the amount of fleas currently on your dog is a good bath. There are flea-killing shampoos on the market with various levels of toxicity associated, so proceed with caution when using over-the-counter shampoos and sprays. The most effective (albeit tedious) method that most veterinary offices use is manual removal of fleas with a flea comb. This is best done when the animal is wet as it causes the fleas to move

a little slower, and they are easier to remove. Severely infested animals can have hundreds of fleas on them, so this method is used in combination with medication as well. Don’t forget to clean your house and the pet’s environment too! The best way to do this is by vacuuming. Fleas like to hide in quiet dark places so make sure that you vacuum well around the bases of furniture, carpets, baseboards, and any other small cracks or crevices where the little guys could be hiding. Of course, washing all bedding (the dog’s and your’s if your pets sleep in a human bed) in hot water and a hot dryer helps to kill any fleas on the bedding.

HEARTWORM can be a deadly disease that can cause heart failure and difficulty breathing. Heartworm is actually a long worm that can live in the blood vessels and heart of your dog. The heartworm larvae are transmitted via mosquito bite from an infected mosquito. While the incidence of heartworm disease is not as high in California as it is in more humid areas such as the Southeast United States, as climates change and animal travel increases, the prevalence of the disease is rising in our state. While heartworm disease can be acquired any time of the year, mosquitoes become increasingly active during the spring and summer months, thus increasing the risk of your dog acquiring the disease. Heartworm disease can be acquired even if your dog doesn’t leave your house or yard. All it takes is one bite from an infected mosquito. The good news is that heartworm disease is easily preventable with once monthly medication. It is important though that your dog is tested negative first before starting a preventative, so contact your veterinarian for more information.

RATTLESNAKES - Living in the hills of Southern California, we are all familiar with the presence of our scaly neighbor, the rattlesnake. While most rattlesnakes are not aggressive, they will bite when provoked. The most important thing to do if your dog is bitten, is to stay calm and keep your dog calm and quiet, and immediately

take your pet to the nearest veterinary emergency hospital. It is advised to call ahead while you are on your way, so that the staff know to expect you and can begin to prepare for your pet’s arrival. It is also important to make sure that the hospital carries rattlesnake antivenom. Most large emergency hospitals keep it on hand, but because of its expense, many smaller non-emergency vet clinics don’t. If you are unsure if your dog has been bitten by a rattlesnake, here are some clues. Oftentimes you will see puncture marks and swelling, but the difference between swelling from a snake bite, and from another cause, is that the snake bite will be extremely painful.

To prevent a snakebite, consider rattlesnake avoidance training. Often, this is a one day clinic at which your

dog is trained to avoid rattlesnakes with real, live rattlesnakes so your dog can learn the smell and sounds to avoid. Another thing to consider is the rattlesnake vaccine. While there is not a large amount of scientific data supporting the efficacy of this vaccine, anecdotally veterinarians report that snake bite patients who have received the vaccine fare better than their nonvaccinated counterparts. It is worth doing some research and asking your veterinarian for their opinion. Please remember though, just because your dog has had the rattlesnake vaccine, does NOT mean that he does not need medical care immediately after a bite. It is still vital that you take your dog to an emergency clinic after a bite, whether or not he or she is vaccinated. HH

DO YOU FEEL

THE NEED FOR SPEED?

The City of Hidden Hills needs your help. For several years, the City has been trying to improve broadband (internet) service in the community through the creation of a brand new “Fiber to the Home” service. This potential new solution would be more reliable and much faster than current commercial service available.

In the coming weeks, residents will be asked to take a short survey about their current internet provider, costs, and interest in this potential new service. Keep your eye out for the survey which will be posted on the City website, www/hiddenhillscity.org. HH
