Better Than Ever

We are proud to publish our second edition of What to do in the Malibu & Santa Monica Mountains. In this edition we’ve taken suggestions given to us by our readers over the last year and incorporated them inside. Our goal is to create stronger editorial content while retaining and refining the functionality of a guide. We’ve been blessed over the last year to get to know our friends, neighbors and partners better than ever. Crisis can force us to pull together in ways we never expected. The Woolsey Fire of November 2018 was a catastrophe on any scale; family homes lost and damaged, businesses affected, loss of life, natural environments eradicated and landmarks destroyed will never be fully quantified.

Heros Pulled Together

Character was tested by the fire and our area residents passed the test with flying colors. Saving homes, rescuing animals, feeding firefighters all represented selfless acts of a community that cares. One of the most spontaneous actions was the “Paradise Cove Boat Lift.” Residents, business owners and employees acted quickly to mobilize the delivery of sorely needed food, water and other supplies by boat. Cut off from access to essentials like food and water, quick minds reached out to friends and family and coordinated deliveries of supplies to boats in Marina del Rey, then shipped them to the waters just off shore at Paradise Cove. The last leg of the shipment came to shore via Jet Ski, kayak and paddleboard, a remarkable chain that was created while fires were burning all around. These heros of Paradise Cove are an example of the many acts of heroism both large and small in all the affected communities. Fire and good will both know no boundaries.

The Iconic Malibu Pier

The iconic Malibu Pier offers 360-degree views not to be missed—and so much more.

The Malibu Pier is recognizable from every angle—it is the symbol of Malibu. With views of dolphins, surfers, sailboats, Catalina Island, the occasional celebrity, landscapes and an offering of food and shopping, the pier is central to experiencing our town.

Its rich and varied history adds to the allure. Serving Malibu since its inception as a private ‘working’ pier in 1905, the Malibu Pier is historically significant, architecturally unique and one of the great piers on the West Coast. Built by Frederick Rindge, a member of the founding family of Malibu, he unknowingly created an important part of the town’s living legacy. His purpose was simple: to send off produce, leather hides and other ranch products to market during a time when ground transportation was slow, expensive and unreliable. Conversely, it allowed machinery, building materials and other goods necessary to run a modern ranching operation, known as the Malibu Rancho, back into town. A private rail system ran those products to and from the loading dock on the pier.

The Malibu Pier was open for fishing in 1934 and has been used by the public, private and government sectors ever since. The U.S. Coast Guard used it for coastal defense during World War II. After the war, the end of the pier was expanded and buildings that still stand today were added and remain with the architectural style common for the mid-1940s. Los Angeles County Lifeguards currently use the pier to moor their patrol boats and local command center.

Sport fishing and fishing charters began in earnest in the 1960s. With fishing from the pier, shore fishing and charters, Malibu was a popular place for fisherman from all over Southern California. The best-known fishing charter was the Lenbrooke, which was guided by Captain Bill Hutchinson. The rich waters up to a mile offshore are known as Keller’s Shelter Bay, and an artificial reef has been built to protect the pier and provide habitat for numerous species of fish. Anyone can still fish from the Malibu Pier, and a California State Fishing License is not required. If you don’t

have a pole, you can rent one along with tackle and bait from Ranch at the Pier.

Our famous Malibu Pier is not infallible. It has had many lives since its inception, having been destroyed by storms numerous times and subsequently rebuilt. For years the pier had been intermittently closed; currently it has remained opened since 2017. Eventually the pier was designated as a California State Historical Site and became part of the California State Parks.

The pier is a neighbor to the historic Adamson house to the west, and, to the east, the once booming Malibu Potteries. Although long gone, Malibu Potteries producedbeautiful tiles from natural clays found along our coast.

Sport Fishing

These tiles−with Spanish, Egyptian and Moorish designs—can still be found on the pier’s tower, in Malibu’s Old Courthouse on PCH near Las Flores Canyon Road and at the Adamson House and gardens, which are well worth a visit.

Today’s Malibu Pier is home to two fine restaurants operated by Helen Henderson. Malibu Farm Restaurant and Bar is the spot to indulge in farm fresh, locally sourced organic fare. Located at the entrance to the pier, you can dine in a whitewashed dining room or on an ocean-side patio bar while enjoying a lovely view of Surfrider Beach and Santa Monica Bay. Located at the end of the pier is Malibu Farm Café with walk-up counter service, and a rich breakfast and lunch menu. Dinner is served most nights as well.

The two large decks at the end of the pier, accessed via the two staircases behind Ranch at the Pier or Malibu Farm Café, offer 360-degree views that span the entire Santa Monica Bay and rise up to the Santa Monica Mountains. Sunsets are memorable, relaxing and romantic. Tucked above the Malibu Farm Café is a small gallery that currently holds the works of John Van Hamersveld, whose pieces include the film poster for Endless Summer, album art for the Beatles and Grateful Dead, and the logo for Fatburger. Hamersveld also created the mural that adorns a charter vessel that starts coastal cruises off the pier later this year.

And, of course, there is shopping. Ranch at the Pier offers a range of items from Malibu centric gifts to beach necessities to fishing supplies and bait. The curator of Ranch at the Pier has gathered a unique and eclectic mix of gifts and clothing that perfectly reflect Malibu’s surf-and-skate culture. You can even stop and enjoy a quick play on the vintage

pinball machine, Surf Champ. The Ranch operates a colorful pop-up style shop, the Malibu Cabana, with inflatables and other beach items at the entrance of the pier. Alkemie Road, a pop-up, or more accurately drive-up, has a one-of-a-kind jewelry collection, along with a wonderful collection of vintage accessories. Shopkeepers

Dara Gerson and her husband Ashley Lowengrub operate their business in a funky, handcrafted trailer hand built by Ashley. Located next to Alkemie Road is Miansai, which is housed in an uber cool Airstream and has a selection of fine jewelry and leather goods. Malibu Surf

Shack recently opened a rental kiosk on the pier and rents surfboards, stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. Their staff assists with safe beach launches and landings, and can arrange lessons or tours. Because the pier is quintessential Malibu, many films, televisions shows, commercials and fashion photo shoots have been located on or near it. They include scenes from “Gidget,” “Big Wednesday,” “Taken 2,” episodes of “American Idol,” “Real Housewives,” “Baywatch” and “Rockford Files”—to name just a few. Ranch at the Pier has some movie memorabilia proudly adorned on its walls.

A trip to Malibu isn’t complete until you’ve walked the historic Malibu Pier.

A Family’s Love Of Wine

Owned and operated by the Hirsh family since 1999, family patron Richard Hirsh’s love of wine and exacting eye on detail has created the Cielo of today. Through Richard’s dream, Cielo pours some of the very best wines created in the Malibu Coast A.V.A. Richard along with his wife and late brother Bill developed a deep love of wine over the decades especially influenced by French wines from the region of Bordeaux. While on a bike ride in the Santa Monica Mountains, Richard discovered the property that he fell in love with and eventually purchased to build his family home. During construction the fill dirt was used to plant a few Cabernet vines.

A Vineyard Grows

With the natural success of his first vines more varietals were planted. Equal parts of success come from meticulous stewardship of the land combined with a terrior unique to the influence of the moist Pacific Ocean breezes pushing upward into the Santa Monica Mountains. The successful formula continues as Cielo’s grape harvest is shipped to Napa Valley for processing and bottling. Today patrons can enjoy over 20 wines at The Barn, which are exclusive to thier Malibu Tasting Experience. Cielo features two collections of wine, Cielo Estate and the Woodstock Collection. Featuring cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot, viognier, petite syrah and malbec varietals guests can taste wine by the flight or bottle and purchase wines to go.

Cielo’s Wine Club provides regular delivery of the highest quality wine shipped directly to members or for pick up at the vineyard. Members are also invited to member’s only events at the vineyards as well as complimentary flights at The Barn. The gatherings typically include cheeses and picnic lunches. Members enjoy hours of afternoon and evening ambiance sipping wine and watching the light play across the lush landscape and panoramic views.

With success comes demand and Cielo recently opened to the public by reservation and a one day wine club membership. Reservations for these Malibu Tasting Experiences are available to members and guests of members by appointment only between 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. daily. KING GILLETTE RANCH –

Secret Treasure.

One of the most beautiful locations in the Santa Monica Mountains, the 588-acre King Gillette Ranch is situated just a short drive from downtown Malibu in the heart of the Malibu Creek Watershed and adjacent to Malibu Creek State Park. The ranch offers a rare unspoiled view of California’s rich cultural and historic resources, including the ancient site of a local Chumash Indian village. Many of the existing structures were designed for razor blade magnate King C. Gillette in the 1920s by Wallace Neff, architect of California’s Golden Age. Like the Gillette Mansion, Neff’s works were still sought after by wealthy people and celebrities. Built in the Spanish Revival style, the mansion is an excellent example of this typically California architectural tradition. The mansion features a long eucalyptus-lined grand entry, pond, broad lawns, a formal courtyard, terrace and bridges. The tile work, open-beam ceilings and wrought ironwork beautifully showcase the period in which the mansion was built. Center. Built in the former stables of the King Gillette Ranch, the transformation from housing horses to hosting visitors preserved the appearance of the original structure while creating an attractive, accessible, creative and energy-efficient edifice. Let the Visitor Center serve as the beginning of your adventures in the Santa Monica Mountain National Recreation Area or just as an introduction. Enjoy the many fascinating exhibits curated for adults and children, and don’t miss the center’s gift shop featuring camping and hiking supplies, gifts, clothing, souvenirs and publications.

Beillenson Visitor Center features numerous colorful, entertaining and educational exhibits highlighting the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and its myriad of historic and natural resources. Exhibits focus on the area’s plants, animals, human history, watershed and weather. Don’t miss the center’s impressive interactive relief map. After touring the exhibits, children can earn deputy ranger status and receive their own junior U.S. Park Ranger badge.

Dogs are only allowed on National Park Service property (adjacent to the visitor center). Dogs are not allowed on the rest of the property at King Gillette Ranch.

A visit to the Ranch and Visitors Center would not be complete without a stroll, walk, trek or hike into the area’s broad meadows and along the row of ridgelines that serve as a wildlife corridor in the geographic epicenter of the Santa Monica Mountains. Several sensitive species are present. Raptors and other birds forage and nest among the plants, live oak, grassland, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, riparian woodland and southern willow vegetation. A short, somewhat steep hike leads to a knoll, known as Inspiration Point, with 360-degree views—including the famous rock formations of Malibu Creek State Park.

Many events are held at King Gillette ranch including seasonal events, art exhibits, movie night, Live Reptile and Amphibian Show, Bird Fest and Medicinal Plant walk, to name a few. Public interpretive programs, including weekly campfires in the summer, are offered by park staff. Overnight accommodations, meeting rooms, auditorium and park areas are available for special events, including weddings, by special use permit. Many films and television shows have also been based at the King Gillette Ranch.

Malibu stretches 21 miles east to west with many retail and service shops strung along Pacific Coast Highway, the main roadway that runs through it.

Central Malibu is the heart of Malibu. It holds the largest number of retail and service shops, as well as the academic hubs plus the city center. Family Fun in and around Malibu

King Gillette Ranch Visitor Center

A wonderful starting point for family fun is the Visitor Center at the King Gillette Ranch located near the corner of Mulholland Highway and Las Virgenes Road (Note: The Malibu side of Las Virgines Road is called Malibu Canyon Road). This beautifully designed space was once the stable for the Gillette Mansion. The Center has numerous well planned exhibits covering topics such as area plants, animals, history and the geology and geography. Located right next door to the Ranch is Malibu Creek State Park. The park offers easy hikes and bike trails the entire family can enjoy. Flowing year around, Malibu Creek meanders through the park providing large rocky ponds for the areas abundant wildlife.

A Family-Friendly Hike

A hike in Solstice Canyon at Corral Canyon, provides a great family adventure. Whether you’re carrying your little one, using a stroller or chasing your toddler or teen, this fairly gentle sloping trail parallels a babbling creek as it winds through tree shaded glens and sunny meadows. Eventually, you will find yourselves among the ruins of home that could be a setting from Indiana Jones. Then, stroll just a bit further to the secret waterfall behind the old structures. The 3 mile roundtrip hike is dotted with numerous shady rest stops and there are bathroom facilities at the park’s entrance. Visitors should arrive early as parking is limited.

Parks & Playgrounds

Parks and playgrounds are essential for keeping young busy bodies active and healthy. A few noteworthy parks with playgrounds include Las Flores Creek Park in Eastern Malibu with play equipment appropriate for younger kids along with trees for climbing and paths to stroll. Trancas Canyon Park in Western Malibu offers play equipment, picnic facilities, a dog park, and lots of run-around room.

Malibu Bluffs Park, with a magnificent ocean view (perfect for whale watching) is located in Central Malibu. The park features ball fields, trails, a walking track, picnic facilities and play equipment. Keep the little ones entertained during your shopping and dining expedition to The Malibu Country Mart where its shops, art installations and restaurants are situated around a very popular play area. Surfing in Malibu

Few names are as entwined in surf culture as Malibu. From the historic development of surfing in California to Hollywood surf cinema, Malibu is still a very real surf town. Other water sports such as stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, SCUBA, snorkeling and kiteboarding are all here in Malibu. Surf and sport shops are sprinkled all along the 21 miles of South facing coastline serving the needs of all watersports. The Big Kahuna of course is surfing, but with its popularity comes crowding and other factors that help drive the growth of alternative water sports.

Surfrider Beach – Malibu’s Surfing Epicenter

The center of Malibu surf culture is Surfrider Beach in central Malibu. The beach has three primary point breaks and is the place of both real surfing and Hollywood’s fictional surfers. Artfully named First Point, Second Point and Third Point, all three points promise waves for every experience levels from beginners to expert surfers. The main portion of Surfrider is exclusively dedicated to surfers and swimming in this area is prohibited. A dedicated area

for swimmers is clearly marked between Surfrider and the pier. Anyone can enjoy great views of the surf action from the upper beach slopes near the historic Adamson House or the end of Malibu Pier.

Calling back to the mid 1950’s when Kathy Kohner earned the nickname Gidget, a mash-up of Girl and Midget. Surfers gave her that name when she bribed them for surf lessons with peanut butter sandwiches. Featured in a novel then subsequent movie and TV series, Gidget

elevated both surfing and California ‘girl power’ into the national spotlight. The Surfrider legend started long before Sandra Dee starring in Gidget hit the movie theaters in 1959. In 1965 Gidget, played by Sally Field, was a one season television wonder. Surfrider was the location for much of Big Wednesday in 1978 which followed surfers seeking the perfect wave. The Surfrider reality exceeded the legend when world famous surfer Laird Hamilton ‘shot the pier’ riding epic waves churned by Hurricane Marie off Baja Mexico. Ironically it happened on a Wednesday in 2014 and can still be viewed on YouTube.

Malibu Surf Shack is the exclusive provider of surf rentals, lessons and tours

at the Malibu Pier. Malibu Surf Shack (MSS) rents surfboards, stand up paddleboards and kayaks. Their professional staff conducts group and private lessons for any of the watercraft. Renters are assisted from the beach past the break to make both launching and

landing easy and safe. MSS runs a Summer Surf Camp for children ages 7 to 17 from June through August. Kids will enjoy learning how to surf from surf instructors with years of teaching experience. Malibu Surf Shack has a highly trained team of expert surf guides

that can ensure the Malibu surf experience will be ‘most excellent’. Malibu Surf Shack, located across from Surfrider Beach has all the goods both rookie and veteran surfers needs including surfboard sales, rentals, wetsuits, wax and everything in between.

Also located across from the Malibu Pier is the new Traveler Surf Club. Traveler serves surfers with private surfboard storage surfboard rentals, personal lockers, showers, lounge and other amenities. The club has long-term memberships as well as daily services for visitors.

West Malibu’s Surf Frontier Point Dume, which points due south, and effectively divides Malibu into east and west. Western Malibu surf spots ranges from Zuma Beach to Broad

Beach and beyond to Leo Carillo. Zuma and Broad are a beach breaks while Leo Carillo is a point break. Drill Surf and Skate is located In Trancas Country Market and serves the western end of Malibu. Drill conveniently provides both sales and rental of surf gear. Drill’s skateboard selection is one of the best in all of Malibu. Drill has a wonderful collection of vintage skateboards displayed on its walls.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding and Kayaking

Surf is dependent on many factors such as tide, swell and time of year, sometimes the waves are too small to surf. When surf is lacking stand up paddle boarding and kayaking are very attractive ways to get on the water. Like surfing, rentals and lessons are available at many locations. Unlike surfing, stand up paddleboards and kayaks are much easier to enjoy and greater distances can be traveled. Water safety is always important so life vests, expert instruction and outfitting are highly recommended. Outfitters like Malibu Surf Shack can provide safe equipment, instruction and assist you with safe launching and landings. The view into clear waters off Surfrider reveal a world beneath the surface thriving with fish, kelp forest and the occasional seal or dolphin. Looking back up at the majestic Santa Monica Mountains from just a few hundred feet offshore delivers a sublime perspective. As lovely as the view from the beach is, you simply cannot appreciate the same perspective that you get from the water. Whatever you choose, make the most of your Malibu experience, have fun, stay safe and get ‘stoked’ on the waters of Malibu.

Every year, Pepperdine University commemorates the lives lost in the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, by filling a beautiful, rolling hillside with 2,887 American flags and 90 international flags representing the home countries of individuals who died in the attacks. Visitors from all over the world stop to pay their respects and remember the fallen. The month-long tribute is both moving and stunning.

A Place for Remembrance & Reflection

Visitors are also encouraged to meander to the top of the Pepperdine campus to visit the Thomas E. Burnett, Jr. Heroes Garden. The garden is an honor in perpetuity of Pepperdine’s Graziadio School alumnus and HERO who put America first as a passenger on board Flight 93. The garden is located at one of the highest points on the Malibu campus and stands as an outdoor chapel, a place of honor, reflection and, especially, remembrance. It is meant to be a peaceful place in a turbulent world. It will serve many purposes, perhaps some we do not even envision.

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

Located in the heart of Calamigos Ranch sits a whimsical and magical outdoor restaurant with modern farm dining. While the original Roadhouse may have been lost to the flames of the Woolsey fire, the new Roadhouse is up and running. The menu offers barbecue with an Asian flare. Teriyaki chicken, Korean drummettes, rice and ginger scallion sauce all march along to the Roadhouse drumbeat. Counter service makes Roadhouse fast, casual and friendly to sandy feet.

Reel Inn on the east end of Malibu is a classic fish shack that also welcomes sandy feet and beachwear. Cruising off the coast of MALIBU

he coast along Malibu and Santa Monica Mountains promises enriching experiences that include the natural wonders of the Pacific Ocean, Santa Monica Bay, Channel Island National Park, Catalina Island, rich fishing beds and whale watching. More than thirty miles that stretch from Santa Monica to Point Mugu is some of the most beautiful coastline in the world. Push that out into the Santa Monica Bay and beyond to coastal islands and there is world that can only truly be discovered by boat. Many celebrity homes can be seen from the ocean but are hidden behind gates and walls on land. The Malibu Pier is slated to start coastal cruises from the pier later this year, but until then the two closest access points to these experiences is Channel Islands Harbor and Marina Del Rey.

Channel Islands Harbor

About a half hour to the west of Malibu is Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. Whether you rent a jet ski or explore the harbor in an electric Duffy boat, Channel Islands Harbor (CIH) is filled with fun and adventure for the whole family. Harbor side dining, shopping and parks make Channel Islands Harbor a noteworthy stop for area residents and visitors. One of the many distinct vessels you may see is the H2O Bus, a turquoise 1967 Volkswagon van. The all-electric boat is set with a VW dash, steering wheel and sound machine replicating the authentic sound of a revving VW engine. CIH is the ideal gateway to visit the islands that make up Channel Islands National Park, which is thought of as “America’s Galapagos Islands”. Five remarkable islands in this coastal chain are mere 11 miles from the harbor.

Island Packers Cruises

Island Packers Cruises (IPC) operates a variety of cruises year around. Popular cruises include whale watching during the annual migration of gray whales between breeding lagoons in Baja Mexico and rich feeding grounds in the Gulf of Alaska. IPC runs regular tours of the Anacapa Islands, Santa Rosa Island and Santa Barbara Island. These islands, all part of the Channel Islands National Park, provide access to rarely seen natural wonders on land and sea. IPC tours include scenic rides to the islands along with walking tours on the islands with rich history and undeveloped landscapes. IPC operates kayak tours including sea caves like Painted Cave on Santa Cruz Island, which is one of the largest sea caves in the world, can only be visited by kayak or boat.

Along the way you may see playful dolphins, huge sea turtles and sea lions on rocky outcroppings. One of the land-based rarities is the Torrey Pines grove on Santa Rosa Island. This ancient grove was once part of the Torrey Pines grove near La Jolla but was separated by tectonic movement over thousands of years.

Another approach to our coastal islands is from the air with Channel Islands Aviation flying out of nearby Camarillo Airport. The American Presidency comes alive at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, where 18 galleries and dozens of interactive displays wait to entertain, educate and excite you. Two to three times per year the Reagan Library puts on special exhibitions. This summer, from May 24, 2019 through September 8, 2019 the Reagan Library will host Vinci, a 10,000 square foot exhibition showcasing his machines and artwork. The exhibit examines Leonardo da Vinci -- an artist and inventor who created the most incredible works of beauty, designed the most frightening war machines intended for death and

destruction, and invented flying machines 400 years before man took to the skies. More than 500 miles of horsefriendly trails crisscross the Santa Monica Mountains and the view from atop a horse can’t be beat. Horse owners can access many of these trails from trailheads that accommodate horse trailers. The mother of all trails is the Backbone Trail that spans 67 miles from Will Rogers State Park in Santa Monica to Point Mugu in Ventura County. This trail was created through the collective vision and will of many dedicated individuals, public agencies and private landowners. Horse riders and hikers that share this trail also share in the sweeping views, rock passes and shady glens along the way. Longtime mountain resident and open space advocate Ruth Gerson rode the entire trail along with her Backbone Trail Cowgirls in 2016, inspiring other riders and hikers to complete this epic journey.

For those who don’t own horses, Malibu Riders provides horses and guides for rides through some of the most scenic yet accessible trails starting at Paramount Ranch just outside of Agoura Hills. The one-hour, threemile loop crosses the Malibu Creek watershed with views of Malibou Lake and many of the rocky peaks above. Malibu Riders also recently returned to their Zuma trail with scenic ocean views. These are family-friendly rides that cater to riders of all abilities and promise a lifelong memory. through the Malibu Creek area. Each year 50 to 100 riders saddle up and head out on a ride divided into three groups based on the riders’ skill level and speed. Both riders and horses love this jovial gathering followed by an old fashion ‘dusty-boot’ BBQ.

One of the oldest community organizations in Malibu is Trancas Riders and Ropers. This group has been faithfully serving the equestrian community since 1952 at the Malibu Equestrian Park adjacent to Malibu High School. Matriarch of the Mountains

The Santa Monica Mountains park system lies within the 40-mile stretch of the Santa Monica Mountains that runs from Hollywood in the east to Point Mugu and the Oxnard Plain in the west. Decades in the making, this system of parks was envisioned and created by a group of visionaries who commonly wanted to preserve this beautiful open space for people to enjoy, wildlife to thrive and cultural history to live on. These visionaries include Susan Nelson, Bill Anderson, Ruth Kilday, Sara Wan and many others. Ruth Gerson is one of the visionaries who have dedicated large amounts of time and energy to ensure the public has

access to these cherished parklands. Ruth does more than talk about the importance of preservation and access. She dedicates enormous time and energy through two organizations, Recreation & Equestrian Coalition (REC) and Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council (SMMTC). SMMTC’s mission is to protect, preserve and maintain trails in and around the Santa Monica Mountains. Ruth has served on the SMMTC’s Board of Directors since 1979 and is the current President. REC was formed in 2000 and works to protect and enhance recreation and equestrian assets in the Santa Monica Mountains. Ruth Gerson is an example of a person who cares deeply about the stewardship of the Santa Monica Mountains and continually shows her vision and leadership in this mission.

The house where Madeline (played by Reese Witherspoon) on the series “Big Little Lies” lives is a Cape Cod-style home, which was built in 1979. It sits on 80 feet of Malibu beachfront land and was also featured on Seasons 3-8 of the series “Diagnosis Murder,” starring Dick Van Dyke, as well as Seasons 1-3 of the Disney series “Hannah Montana.”

El Matador State Beach

One of the most visually stunning beaches in Malibu, El Matador State Beach, features stunning rock formations and sea caves, making it a popular spot for photo shoots and filming. Perhaps one of the most memorable movie moments ever shot here was one of the romantic scenes from “The Notebook,” in addition to “A Lot Like Love,” “True Romance” and “Valley Girl.” You might also recognize El Matador from Madonna’s “Cherish” music video.

Henman House

Built by renowned architect Ed Miles in 1993, this residence, which features glass walls and a cathedral-like facade, is located on Mulholland Highway and overlooks the Malibu canyons, Santa Monica Mountains and Pacific Ocean. This unique home is also where Britney Spears filmed her “Work B***h” music video.

The 10,000-square-foot Tuscan mansion, also known as “Villa De La Vina,” has been the filming location for “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” since Season 11 in 2007.

King Gillette Ranch

Located at the Malibu Creek Watershed off of Las Virgenes Road and Mulholland Highway in Calabasas, this sprawling ranch attracts history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts with its unspoiled views, hiking and 1920s architecture. It was originally built by King Camp Gillette, founder of the Gillette Safety Razor Company, who built a mansion on the grounds. Now a nature and wildlife reserve open to the public, the site became the filming location for “The Biggest Loser” starting in Season 4.

Las Tunas Beach

“The Hills” may be off the air these days, but many of us will never forget when Lauren Conrad turned down a Parisian summer internship with Teen Vogue, instead choosing to rent a beach house with thenboyfriend Jason Wahler. The home sits just east of Las Tunas Beach and was featured on the “Timing Is Everything” episode in the Season 1 finale, as well as at the beginning of the Season 2 premiere.

Leo Carrillo State Park

It’s no wonder that Leo Carrillo State Park is an in-demand filming location. The scenic 1.5-mile stretch of beach is decorated with rocky cliffs, reefs, tide pools and caves, in addition to a picturesque park with hiking trails and views. The park is named after the late actor Leo Carrillo, who played the sidekick Pancho in “The Cisco Kid,” a western TV series. The opening scene of “Grease,” with

John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, was filmed on the beach, in addition to movies such as “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “She’s All That,” “The Karate Kid” and “The Usual Suspects.” “Glass House” was filmed in a home that overlooks Leo Carrillo State Park. It was also the backdrop for the touching final scene of “Furious 7,” where the gang bid farewell to Paul Walker’s character.

Malibu Creek State Park

Often referred to as “The Yosemite of Southern California,” Malibu Creek State Park has more than 8,000 acres of plains, savannahs and dramatic peaks,

and was formerly owned by 20th Century Studios from 1946 to 1974. The park was the filming location for the legendary comedy series “M*A*S*H*,” and visitors to this day can still observe various props that were left behind from the show, among them the iconic signpost and vintage military vehicles. Countless other movies filmed here include “Planet of the Apes,” “Tarzan Escapes,” “The Left Hand of God,” “Love Me Tender” (starring Elvis Presley), “Pleasantville,” “California,” “What a Way to Go” and “Anchorman.”

Malibu Pier

The ending scenes of action

thrillers “Taken 2” and “Taken 3” were both filmed on the historic Malibu Pier, which was built in 1905 as a shipping dock. Ruby’s Shake Shack, which was featured in the second film, closed in 2011. In its place now sits the restaurant Malibu Farm Pier Cafe.

Malibu Sign

Anyone driving along PCH will pass the Malibu sign located next to the highway, which has become a popular spot for people to take pictures and selfies. It was also prominently featured in the movie “Malibu’s Most Wanted.”

Neptune’s Net

Originally established as Jake’s Diner in 1958, this local seafood spot was purchased in 1974 and renamed Neptune’s Net. To this day, it remains one of the most famous beachside restaurants in Los Angeles. A favorite haunt for locals and visitors alike, Neptune’s Net has been prominently featured in films such as “The Fast and the Furious,” “Losin’ It,” “People Like Us” and “Point Break,” as well

Learn more about the four natural coastal habitats found in our city with a visit to Legacy Park. This outdoor environmental park not only features walking trails and wildlife viewing areas, but also is home to educational resources about water quality and public health.

Point Mugu State Park

With plenty of sights to be seen from within the park, hiking and biking is also a favorite attraction behind the scenes of this five-mile oceanfront spot. In addition to camping and backpacking throughout the area, guests can ride horses or enjoy the many mountain biking trails located throughout the park.

Charmlee Wilderness Park

Shady picnic areas and supreme ocean views can be found across the 590 acres that comprise the Charmlee

Wilderness Park. Located on Encinal Canyon Road, the park includes eight miles of hiking trails and an incredible amphitheater with a wide variety of public programs available.

Malibu Bluffs Park

This six-acre community park is located near Pepperdine University on the oceanside of Pacific Coast Highway. Two baseball diamonds and a multi-use field provide the perfect space for children and adults to engage in athletic events and city-sponsored classes.

Trancas Canyon Park

Located on the western end of town, Trancas Canyon Park is open daily from sunup to sundown. A dog park, children’s play area and picnic tables provide a familyfriendly atmosphere among the lush landscaping.

Solstice Canyon

Dogs are always welcome on this easy hike which boasts nearly three miles of walking trails to the ruins of the Roberts Ranch House and a waterfall. Located off Corral Canyon Road, this hotspot’s parking lot fills up quickly so make sure to arrive early; parking is prohibited along the canyon roads.

Malibu Creek / Rock Pool

This three-mile hike located inside Malibu Creek State Park puts you right in the epicenter of nature in the Santa Monica Mountains. Portions of the hike are shaded and lead you to serene pools and a massive volcanic rock wall. Be on the lookout for wildlife!

Winding Way

Begin your four-mile journey on the Winding Way trail at Pacific Coast Highway and hike your way to the gorgeous Escondido Falls. The 150-foot waterfall is a sight to be seen, and, is the tallest in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Malibu Bluffs Park

While the trails are easy and begin near the Michael Landon Center, trail runners find Bluffs Park to be the best in looping through back roads set among stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. This kid-friendly spot features multiple trails for a light hike or jog that leads back to a big parking lot, baseball fields and a playground.

Temescal

Gateway Park

Temescal Gateway Park in Pacific Palisades has several trail options throughout its 141 acres of oak and sycamore canyons, a waterfall, and ridgetop views, through the adjacent Topanga State Park, Will Rogers State Historic Park, and the 20,000-acre “Big Wild.” The access for the Temescal Canyon Trail, Temescal Ridge Trail, and the Temescal Rivas Canyon Trail to Will Rogers all begin in the park at the intersection of Sunset Blvd. and Temescal Canyon Road.

Malibu Pier

Overlooking the world famous Surfrider Beach, the Malibu Pier is an iconic landmark in our little community. With a history that dates back to 1905, the Pier was initially built to support the Rindge family’s import and export businesses, and, decades later, was used as a stop for sport-fishing boats. Today, there’s nothing quite like watching the sunset over the water as surfers catch their last waves into shore.

Paramount Ranch

Located just a few miles outside of the city, Paramount Ranch is home to the filmfamous Western Ranch—a hotspot for photographers looking to find a unique setting amid the Santa Monica Mountains. The National Park Services revamped the multi-use location in the ’80s, with pristine trails leading to old film settings and favorite picnic areas.

Zuma Beach

Located on the west end of town, big waves and bigger crowds are almost always expected at Zuma Beach. Nearly two miles of shoreline make this a surf spot for seasoned surfers to catch a wave (and a parking spot).

County Line Beach

Near the border of Malibu and Ventura County, County Line is known for drawing various levels of skilled surfers. Beginners take to the waves toward one end of the beach, while experienced surfers take on the famous Point Break on the northern side.

Topanga State Beach

A great wave is often found at Topanga State Beach, with a wide array of surfers taking to the sea on the eastern border of town. A small, sturdy break gives any beginning to intermediate surfer a great place to practice their sport—or the seasoned a great ride on a big day.

Westward Beach

A big expansive beach with a fun break finds surfers sharing the water with body boarders. The beach break breaks both left and right; rips, however, can be dangerous. While there, visitors might even see their favorite TV show being filmed while they catch a wave.

Hikes

Walking along the dusty trail, the cool morning weather provides a fresh breeze. The sound of a waterfall comes from ahead; the view of the ocean in the distance. The trails in Malibu can take hikers up to what feels like the ability to actually touch the sky, while taking their breath away.

More than 150,000 acres make up the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, the world’s largest urban national park, according to the National Park Service (NPS). The 46 miles of trails—from the Hollywood Bowl to Point Mugu in Ventura County—provide not only amazing views of the ocean, but also sightings of an abundance of wildlife and plant life. Native species of wildlife that are rare, threatened or endangered call the area home, along with other fish and vertebrae.

There are stretches of trails perfect for hiking, biking and horseback riding. If you haven’t tried them already, this summer is the perfect opportunity to get out and explore.

Mishe Mokwa Trail

This moderate to strenuous six-mile round-trip trail to Sandstone Peak and Inspiration Point includes spectacular scenic views, with the highest point at 3,100 feet. Aside from seeing rock climbers atop shear cliffs or a monstrous-sized boulder perfectly balanced atop a small rock, there is a huge split rock and giant sandstone formations for awe-viewing pleasure. Be on the lookout for red shank chaparral, a tree-like shrub with reddish-brown bark; it produces small bunches of beautiful white flowers in July and August.

Cheeseboro Canyon

This northernmost 4.6-mile section of the Santa Monica Mountains has the second largest concentration of birds of prey nesting areas in the United States. The canyon, also home to the valley oak tree — the largest native oak in the country — provides easy, beautiful hikes, ranging from one to four hours, and offers climbs or descents of 1,000 feet in elevation. Many of the trails were once used by the Chumash Indians, who lived here for thousands of years before the land was expanded by cattle ranchers. Bikes and horses are also welcome.

Solstice Canyon

A flat, easy hike with a 30-foot waterfall, mysterious ruins and a hidden statue easily draw in the hiker throughout three miles of the many trails nestled under towering alder and sycamore trees, with some of the best ocean views in the Santa Monica Mountains. Also on the land the Chumash Indians once used for food, water and shelter sits a stone cottage built in 1865 by Matthew Keller. Visible from the trail, the cottage is believed to be the oldest existing stone building in Malibu. Reviews list the trail as child, stroller and dog friendly, so feel free to bring Fido.

Popular Hikes

La Jolla Canyon

With gorgeous ocean views, a waterfall, a rolling valley and even a pond, this moderately difficult seven-mile loop trail offers a mellow but steady climb of 1,400 feet to the top. The scenery is particularly lovely when the wildflowers are blooming. The hike can be decreased to a four-mile jaunt by following the La Jolla Canyon Trail versus following the entire trail, which loops around as the Overlook Trail.

Paramount Ranch

The eight miles here offer many easy hiking trails leading to chaparral and oak woodlands, readily completed in two hours. The old western town that served as a backdrop to many films, commercials and television shows, including “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” and “Westworld,” is still visible. The dramatic 1,515-foot mountain to the south (said to inspire the Paramount logo) is Sugarloaf Peak, the highest point in the park. The ParkLINK Shuttle is also available here, which stops at many major sites while touring the area.
