Malibu Creek, once a gentle stream, now flows gracefully over smooth stones, inviting hikers to explore its lush banks. The trails that wind through the Santa Monica Mountains burst forth with a riot of colors as wildflowers paint the landscape in vivid hues. In the evenings, our sunsets are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The sky transforms into a canvas adorned with shades of pink, orange, and purple, casting a serene and enchanting aura over our beloved town. Embarking on an early morning or evening stroll along the beach while our boys search for sea glass is an experience filled with enchantment and wonder.

Mirac, Nic, Hayley & Maximus Mattson

S

pringtime in Malibu is magical. As the chill of winter gradually loosens, our picturesque coastal town comes alive with a vibrant energy that fills our hearts with joy. The once-barren trees now hint change with emerging buds, and the air carries the delightful scent of blooming flowers, harmonizing beautifully with the salty Pacific breeze. Our beaches transform into breathtaking canvases of wonder, featuring soft, golden sands stretching beneath an azure sky. Surfers gracefully carve through the waves while the calls of seagulls create a symphony of coastal life. Watching curlews, plovers, godwits, sanderlings, and willets dart to avoid the waves as they hunt elusive crabs is a sight that can make anyone smile.

With nature's paintbrush in full bloom, it's no wonder that our spring edition, themed around the world of art, celebrates this season of wonder. From the coastal galleries to the exceptionally talented local artists who infuse their creativity into our lives, we embrace the impact of artistic expression. Our pages overflow with the vibrant colors of imagination and the deep emotions that art stirs within us. As you peruse this issue, we hope you not only find visual delight but also discover a wellspring of inspiration to ignite your own creative passions. On our cover, we pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of The Getty Villa, an artistic masterpiece and cultural gem nestled in our hills. Over the past five decades, this remarkable institution has embarked on an extraordinary journey. In this month's MalibuHome section, we engage in a captivating conversation with the visionary team at Burdge and Associates Architects, along with the esteemed Richard Blumenberg of RLB Architects. Their combined expertise provides invaluable insights into the future of home design, seamlessly integrating with the unique essence of Malibu living. Starting in our previous issue, we introduced an exclusive Malibu Real Estate section, acknowledging the pivotal role this sector plays in our local economy. We firmly believe that the exceptional homes of Malibu deserve a prominent place within our editorial, reflecting their significance within our community. Take a moment to explore the array of properties that make up Malibu's vibrant real estate market, each possessing its own distinct charm and captivating allure.

Spring is a symphony of nature's renewal, where the vibrant colors of wildflowers dance along the coast, and the soothing whispers of the Pacific Ocean serenade the soul. - anonymous

As we embrace the beauty of spring and begin planning our summer vacations, let us take a moment to reflect on the true gifts that Malibu bestows upon us. May this season inspire you to appreciate the beauty around you and ignite a sense of wonder and creativity in your own life.

Children’s Lifesaving Foundation Celebrates 30 Years After three decades of dedicated service, Maria D’Angelo, the founder of the Children’s Lifesaving Foundation, announced her retirement, marking the end of an era in which the organization transformed the lives of over 85,000 families. To celebrate her legacy and the 30th anniversary of the organization, a dinner and fundraiser were held at Tiato Kitchen and Garden in Santa Monica. The Children’s Lifesaving Foundation (CLF), a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization, has been committed to uplifting underserved youth through innovative programs. These initiatives include outdoor education through summer and surf camps, inspiring holiday events, educational assistance, and scholarships for youth through college age. The foundation also partners with organizations to provide life-changing experiences for children. Throughout the years, CLF has organized Wilderness Day Camps, surf and beach camps, and provided scholarships to deserving students. They’ve been instrumental in offering emergency funding during the COVID-19 crisis to the families in their Vita Network. At the 30th Anniversary Celebration and Fundraiser, Maria D’Angelo was honored by Executive Director Francesca McCaffery and Program Director Sean McCaffery. Special guest speakers, including former foster youth Rodney Early and beneficiary Chanel Sandoval, featured scholarships in memory of David Weinstein and John Cygan, recognizing their contributions to the foundation. Celebrating the Life and Legacy of ‘Coach Hump’ On January 27, a touching celebration of life was held at Brentwood School to honor the memory of Regence Yasim Humphrey, affectionately known as “Coach Hump.” Coach Hump, who passed away on January 2 at the age of 53, was a beloved figure in Malibu and the surrounding communities. Hundreds of attendees, including family members, friends, and students, gathered to pay their respects. Andre Smith, reflecting on his brother Ray’s memories, shared the sentiment that Coach Hump was more than just a coach; he was a big brother and a special presence in their lives. The ceremony highlighted Coach Hump’s profound impact as a coach, brother, cousin, uncle, brother-in-law, and best friend. He was described as a person who embodied love, support, and guidance in all aspects of his life. His friendship was boundless, and he brought joy and laughter into the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. Coach Hump’s legacy extended beyond the sports field. He worked for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District for nearly two decades, leaving a lasting impression on countless students and athletes. MHS Principal Patrick Miller praised him as a dedicated Ian McGee, underscored the deep bond that Coach Hump had with those he touched. As a poignant conclusion to the ceremony, Andre Smith called upon the football team to “take a knee” in solidarity and respect for their beloved coach. Coach Hump’s memory will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him, reminding them of the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and resilience both on and off the field.

Zachary Le In recent years, my life has been turned on its head more times than I can confidently count or am willing to admit. Soon after beginning my dream job as a firefighter for the City of Oxnard Fire Department, I had the misfortune of contracting COVID while at work. It turned out to be one of the rare cases in which the illness resulted in significant and ongoing complications with my heart. During a time of vast unknown, where death lingered and lurked like a shadow, I sought to move beyond the impossible task of making sense of the hand I was dealt. Instead, I searched for ways to find a truer sense of peace and meaning within circumstances. Throughout my ongoing efforts, I have found myself clinging to a phrase that a coworker of mine once shared while we sat around the dinner table: what you focus on expands. Holding firm to this mindset, I continue to pursue a life driven by immense gratitude and appreciation. In full commitment and effort to live in such a way, and in regard and respect for the limitations which accompany my ongoing health setbacks, I have utilized painting as a vehicle of self-preservation, exploration, and connection to the world around me. When I need to draw inspiration within my artistic practice, I find myself returning to the roots of my overwhelming gratitude: the people, the places, and the experiences I have lived throughout my life. Whether watching the sun rise and set over the Pacific, meeting solitude in the lazy hills and winding canyons, or spending time with cherished friends and loved ones, Malibu offers endless opportunities every day to take a step back. For me, despite the circumstances that remain out of my control, I will choose to focus on that which gives me life and urges me on. I can only hope that the gratitude I pour into my work may be well received and multiplied. zacharyle.com

Derek Schimming As an abstract expressionist, I find my inspiration throughout our Malibu community. The colors, vibrancy, and even the architecture fuels my passions to create. However, and most importantly, it’s the ocean and our beaches that motivate me to paint, and you will find hues of blue in all my work. On my best days, I go to the beach, and on my worst days, I go there too, since the ocean and our beaches give me joy. I don’t do traditional landscapes, but I paint our coastline, pier, and community in my own unique way. I look at the colors all around us, which translates into the bold use and layers of color in my paintings. We also have a diverse, eclectic group of colorful characters in our Malibu community, many of whom I’m proud to call my friends, and this diversity also adds to my creative passion. My father always said, “If you want big fleas, you have to run around with big dogs,” which is the main reason I’m an active member of the Malibu Art Association. Plus the fact I just simply enjoy being around and sharing with other artists and our community in general. Malibu obviously has some amazingly talented artists of all types, and this fact keeps me striving to take my art to new levels and experiment with my techniques to push myself forward, so maybe one day I’ll be considered by others as one of those big dogs. Guerin Swing I draw inspiration from the carefree spirit of West Coast skate and surf culture, which fuels a passion for freedom, connection, creativity, and resilience. Malibu is its own subculture; Malibu has developed its own distinct identity through a combination of historical significance, a unique surfing style, a close-knit community, localism, celebrity influence, environmental consciousness, and contributions to surfboard design. These elements collectively inspire me and motivate me to approach my art with the same energy, enthusiasm, and authenticity that define the Southern California lifestyle. Guerinswing.com

Award-winning film takes audiences on a heartwarming journey in beautiful Malibu By Emmanuel Luissi

T

rust in Love,” a heartwarming drama set in the picturesque backdrop of Malibu, has quickly garnered acclaim, both domestically and internationally. The film, based on the true story of protagonist and producer Jimi Petulla, has earned numerous awards, including Best International Feature Film at the Swedish International Film Festival, Best Actor at the Barcelona Indie Awards, and Best Feature Film at the Dublin Movie Awards, among others. Produced by Petulla Pictures, the film is written and produced by Jimi Petulla and directed by Mick Davis, known for his work on “Modigliani” (2004) and “Walden” (2023). The star-studded cast includes Natasha Wilson, Sydney Bullock, Logan Arditty, Eric Roberts, Milijenko Matijevic, Lisa Long, and Tim Hazelip, a first-time actor who delivers a standout performance. Robbie Krieger, the founding member and guitarist of The Doors, also makes a cameo appearance. “Trust in Love” tells the story of Mickey Ferrara (played by Petulla), a struggling record producer facing the challenges of family dynamics and a potentially dwindling career in music. His family grapples with divorce, peer pressure, and questions of sexual identity, portraying the real-life issues faced by families every day with a unique comedic perspective. One of the film’s notable aspects is its cast, which was praised by viewers at the Culver City Film Festival. The beautiful cinematography featuring stunning aerial and tracking shots of Malibu’s iconic locations adds to the film’s visual appeal. Jimi Petulla describes the production as a true passion project. Collaborating with director Mick Davis, they successfully condensed the screenplay to bring Petulla’s cinematic vision to life. In his acting debut, Malibu resident Tim Hazelip impressed as Bobby Ferrara, Mickey’s brother, bringing natural authenticity and a unique style to his role. Despite his lack of experience, Hazelip’s chemistry with Davis stood out, contributing to a memorable performance. The entire cast, including young Malibu kids, added to the film’s authentic portrayal of the local culture and family dynamics. Cinematographer Viorel Sergovici collaborated with Davis to give the film a visually stunning appearance, defying its modest budget. “Trust in Love” gains critical acclaim, and Jimi Petulla explores wider release options. Built in 1929 by Rhoda and Merritt Adamson as a summer retreat, the Malibu Adamson House is a historic coastal masterpiece.

Malibu’s T Historic Adamson House A glimpse into Malibu’s history through the meticulously restored beachside gem By Elizabeth Hickcox

44 | MALIBUMAG.COM

Rhoda and Merritt split their time between the beach house and their residence in Hancock Park in Los Angeles until 1936 when they moved to Malibu permanently with their children. The Adamson family was not only known for their beautiful house but also for establishing and managing the world-renowned dairy and farm, Adohr Stock Farms nearby. (Fun fact, Adohr is Rhoda’s name spelled backwards.) Merritt and Rhoda resided in the house until their respective passings in 1949 and 1962. Today, visitors to the Adamson House can step back in time and witness the incredible design of this 4,500 square-foot, 5-bedroom home. Remarkably, about 95 percent of the original furnishings have been preserved. The house boasts an extensive use of tiles sourced from the famous Malibu Potteries company founded by May Rindge in 1926. The decorative tiles showcase Mayan, Moorish, Moroccan, Saracen, and Persian-style designs, adorning everything from doorways to a spectacular tile Persian carpet to the iconic peacock fountain. Design aside, the Adamson House holds a significant place in history, designated as a California Historical Landmark in 1985 with the support of the Malibu Historical Society. Today, the Malibu Adamson House Foundation takes care of the day-to-day operation of the house, the maintenance of its grounds, and public education about the house’s history and the broader history of Malibu. The Malibu Adamson House is not just a museum; it’s a testament to the enduring charm of a bygone era and a celebration of Malibu’s rich history, lovingly preserved for generations to come. adamsonhouse.org

he historic Malibu Adamson House, built in 1929 by Rhoda and Merritt Adamson as a summer beach house, is a timeless gem that stands elegantly between Surfrider Beach and Malibu Lagoon, just a stone’s throw away from the iconic Malibu Pier. This exquisite home, now preserved as a museum open to the public, pays homage to the city’s rich beginnings. The story of the Adamson House begins with Rhoda’s parents, the esteemed Rindge family, who purchased a staggering 14,000 acres of what is now Malibu in 1892 for a mere $140,000. As a wedding gift, Rhoda’s mother bestowed upon her and her husband Merritt, 13 acres of prime land. To bring their vision to life, the couple enlisted the renowned architect and family friend, Stiles Clements, who designed the house in the popular Spanish Colonial style, reflecting the couple’s upbringing.

MALIBU’S COASTAL CHIC IS TRENDING IN 2024 By Judy Abel

A fashion blend of comfort, sustainability, and laid-back style

ashion trends may come and go, but coastal living drives Malibu’s fashion that, while perhaps not trendy, has a distinct aesthetic driven by an easygoing lifestyle of comfort, practicality, and sustainability, an important factor in honoring Malibu’s natural environment.

Comfortable and cozy are words often associated with Malibu fashion in a color palette dominated by sandy neutrals, ocean blues, and sunset hues—a nod to sunsets on the beach and salty breezes. Malibu's fashion retailers have a unique appreciation for the symbiotic relationship between fashion and our coastal environment — especially brands born in Malibu, such as Bleusalt, a maker of sustainable luxury wraps and clothing, and Barefoot Dreams, which has expanded its brand of ultra-soft loungewear. Alexandria Skouras has been dressing stylish women in Malibu for ten years. Her eclectic, chic shop, Pistol & Lucy, named after beloved pets, is filled with “a little something for everyone!” Skouras, a longtime Malibu tastemaker, curates Pistol & Lucy with beautiful dresses, sweaters, jewelry, home décor, and gifts sourced from her travels around the world. Her 2024 style forecast: “A diverse and vibrant blend of styles. Lots of colors! Mixing of oversized silhouettes with fitted, expressing YOU!” A specialty item you’ll find at Pistol & Lucy is “our Ali Lamu sail cloth bags, handmade in Lamu Kenya. I have been working with this small group of artisans for over 12 years.” “I personally love all of our handmade products. I’ve met each artisan and love their stories. Pistol & Lucy pieces all have a story. That’s what makes it special. I think our customer appreciates that. The one thing we hear daily is, ‘I’ve driven by this shop for years and have never stopped.’ Then the magic happens, the loyal customer. They keep coming back. I love what I do. I love finding things that nobody else has. My customers expect it and love to see what I find. With our loyal customer base, I can basically shop for my customers. I know what they want. I always want to be wowed!”

Laid-back Californian vibes and contemporary styles are what you’ll find at the family-run Nati Boutiques. Nati, who goes by one name, opened her first boutique in Trancas nine years ago. She now has a second Malibu location at The Country Mart, also in Venice Beach and Manhattan Beach, and has brought her Malibu style to the mecca of New York shopping, SoHo. Nati says of bringing Malibu style to New York, “It works. In New York, there’s nothing like that. People are excited to see clothing that’s different but very wearable.” Nati connects with her clientele by updating merchandise weekly. She specializes in comfortable, cozy, wearable, and importantly, affordable clothing. You won’t break the bank shopping with Nati. While Nati doesn’t see a new coastal fashion trend in 2024, she says, “I think we’ll have a lot of dresses for spring—nice bright colors.” Nati is known for her linen jumpsuits and jeans. “Our denim is amazing. They fit really well. Everyone who tries our jeans is really surprised. They end up buying three pairs and come back for more.” Nati still personally works in all of her locations. “I enjoy working one-on-one with clients, whether they are new or existing clients. I love making people feel good with what they wear, from preppy to boho.”

VIBRANT

Nature, beaches, and beautiful surroundings continue to inspire and draw creatives to Malibu By Judy Abel

ART SCENE

T

he natural allure of Malibu and its expansive horizons create a dynamic arts scene attracting both established and emerging talents. For those seeking to manifest their artistic visions, the canvas of Malibu itself, with miles of stunning coastline, everchanging skies, and rugged mountains, entices artists from all fields—some who say Malibu’s rich tapestry of natural beauty inspires so profoundly, it’s like drinking from a firehose.

Katherine Kousi of Malibu art showing at Tracy Park Gallery

While you may not encounter as many art galleries as some of Malibu’s coastal counterparts, like Laguna Beach or Carmel-by-the-Sea, Malibu possesses a wealth of art to take in if you know where to look. “There is an incredible amount of diverse and artistic talent in this community,” says Derek Martin Schimming, treasurer of the Malibu Art Association—and he’s not referring to actors. The abstract expressionist is talking about his fellow artists—painters, sculptors, jewelers, and photographers who call Malibu home. “Some are famous who paint unbelievably well. Some are unknown who paint better than anybody you know and everything in between.” There are about 100 artist members in the Malibu Art Association that’s flourishing and constantly growing its supportive community. Some works can be viewed and purchased through their website, but the best way to connect with Malibu Art Association’s artists is in person at one of their many local shows. The social event of this community is the upcoming Spring Fling. This lively affair, held Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7, at the Malibu BUngalows (21201 Pacific Coast Highway), will feature at least 20 artists showcasing various mediums, from photography, painting, sculpture, mosaics, and even jewelry. “The diversity and uniqueness are special. There’s something for everyone,” says Schimming, adding, “This is an event for the community. As artists, we just want to show our stuff. If someone wants to buy it, that’s icing on the cake.” Expect live music, activities for kids, and free valet parking. The Spring Fling event creates the opportunity to meet and mingle with artists in the community, see a variety of art and style, and maybe score an incredible deal directly from the artists themselves. “It’s the place to buy something.”

Tracy Park photo by Samatha Bravo

A local gallerist with longevity in Malibu is Tracy Park, owner and curator of Tracy Park Gallery Malibu. After operating at various locations in town, she landed at Malibu Colony Plaza next to Ralphs, with high visibility and foot traffic. This is Park’s 22nd year in business, specializing in edgy pop art. Park is known for championing and representing local artists, although she represents artists from all around the world. Half of the work shown is by locals. Gallery pieces run from graffiti art to photography to surfboard sculptures and everything in between. “I primarily represent contemporary artists.” Tourists and locals stop by daily, although the gallerist says, “My locals really keep us in business. We have so many repeat customers. I’m very lucky. I have very loyal clients, some for more than 20 years.” This spring, Park is bringing back her emerging artist program. “I’m going to be featuring a lot more emerging artists this year. And then I’m going to bring back a lot of our old favorites.” Park wants to reshow Katherine Kousi of Malibu. She has new works by Jamie Nelson, Steven Lyon, James Crowley, and one of “our all-time favorites, Malibu High School graduate Hunter Blaze Pearson,” the first recipient of an art scholarship for Malibu High Park started in 2018. Park described Pearson’s paintings as “photorealism.” Tracy Park Gallery is also known as a social spot, hosting frequent art openings. This spring, she plans to host more live music at her space. “We’re going to kick it up a notch. We have a lot going

on in our little town. I like to bring it all in one location; live music, art, fun, and parties. It’s fun. We have a good time. It’s all about local love.” Dirk Braun Gallery opened on Malibu Road in the fall of 2022. The artist/filmmaker specializes in largescale, limited-edition photography. Most of the work is by Braun, also a pilot who takes aerial photography to a breathtaking level. “My work comprises land, air, and sea. I like to take aerial landscapes.” On display now are photographs of the Grumman Albatross seaplane taken during the production of Braun’s feature film “Flying Boat,” available on Amazon and streaming on United Airlines, Emirates, and Korean Air. Braun features unique aviation-related art. The gallerist also exhibits other local artists and internationally known photographers and painters. You’ll find images in the gallery depicting picturesque scenes of Malibu and ever-popular coastline swells perched with surfers. “The art gallery definitely captures the essence of Malibu,” says Braun. “Surfing, flying, and filmmaking are the culture of this place.”

Braun’s clientele is worldwide. “What I love about Malibu is it attracts so many different kinds of people coming from far and near. The local core group of people in Malibu is really wonderful. I’ve been happy to have this art displayed in public and private places around the world.”

SPRING 2024 | 63

"It’s all about local love." One of Malibu’s newest galleries is the innovative Third Space in the Malibu Village shopping center. A project of the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu, Third Space is a community partnership with Malibu youth to create art, ideas, and conversation. According to Third Space, “We aim to create a physical space of belonging through art” and “to provide opportunity and create pathways for creators to bring ideas to life.” A percentage of all store purchases benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu. Also new to Malibu is Creo Arthouse across the street at the Malibu Country Mart. Creo Arthouse is where you’ll find one-of-a-kind artworks by local and California artists showcasing exquisite paintings, jewelry, sculpture, photography, hand-thrown pottery, and unique gifts. Works by 50 different artists are currently on display. Sophisticated and unconventional art, photography, and clothing are featured at Canvas Malibu, also located in the Malibu Country Mart. Canvas Malibu bills itself as a concept founded on an appreciation of contemporary art and design with a mission to “be a reflection of the artistry of the day.” Visiting the store, you’ll find changing exhibits of contemporary paintings, sculpture, and photography mixed with art-inspired clothes, footwear, and accessories for men and women. The Malibu community is so invested in its local artists, a gallery was created just for them. The Malibu City Gallery located at Malibu City Hall is thriving under the direction of the Malibu Arts Commission. “The unique thing about our gallery is that we’re not traditional in the sense we don’t make money from artists,” says Commission Chair Fireball Tim Lawrence. The Malibu City Gallery does not take a commission when an artist’s work sells. “It’s a nice luxury. It allows us to be able to run the gallery efficiently without any anxiety other than promote artists. Our sole goal is to have as many artists in there that have not had an opportunity to have a gallery for themselves and have group shows.”

64 | MALIBUMAG.COM

Malibu City Gallery organizes six shows a year. Through March 8, the gallery will feature the work of talented emerging artists from Malibu High School. Starting March 25, the work of local artist Leigh McCloskey, whose paintings often focus on occult, alchemical, and esoteric themes, will be on display. An untitled spring show yet to be determined will begin May 20 through June 28. Also expected in 2024 is an exhibit featuring the work of a famous rock musician turned photographer. Most of the shows at Malibu City Gallery have a connection to Malibu. Every summer, the gallery hosts a surf exhibit featuring scenes of Malibu’s glorious coastline in paintings, photography, mixed media, and even stained glass, all created by local residents. At solo shows, Lawrence, himself an artist and former Disney Imagineer, helps curate the work of “people who are extremely strong in the art world.” He’s looking for talent that “makes my jaw drop” and exhibits that “will blow your mind.” Past exhibits at Malibu City Gallery have included the artwork of actress Jane Seymour, imaginative Disney artist Heather Edwards, and the gallery’s most attended show, “Dick Van Dyke: Moments in Time,” photography by Laura Johansen. Six hundred fifty people from all over the world attended just on opening day. Lawrence appreciates the unique operating model of the Malibu City Gallery in that it is not a business. “It’s nice that most of the time we spend is really about focusing on what the best art we can have is. Our job is to help [promote] and enhance the artists.” Lawrence says, “There’s a tremendous level of creative talent that exists.” “I’m extremely grateful to be in a position to support such a passionately talented community.”

World-class art is always on display at the renowned Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University. Just the view alone of the Pacific set against the backdrop of the Santa Monica Mountains is a stunning site for visitors and locals alike. The gallery’s architecture seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape, providing visitors with breathtaking views of the ocean just outside the exhibition space. The museum showcases a diverse collection of contemporary art, ranging from paintings and sculptures to photography and new media. The museum was founded with a gift in 1992 from Frederick R. Weisman, a noted art collector and philanthropist. There are two exhibits on display through March 31:Jeni Spota C: Encore, thickly impastoed paintings exploring the Long Beach artist’s Italian heritage, and an exhibit of Makoto Fujimura: Water Flames. The JapaneseAmerican abstract painter’s work is a traditional nihonga style. Water Flames brings his major paintings of the last 20 years to the Weisman, focusing on the poetic paradox between the elements of fire and water, which symbolize, in Fujimura’s words, art’s power to “[turn] the flames of destruction into the flames of sanctification.” Now that you know where to look, an abundance of art awaits you in Malibu. Schimming says, “The diversity and quality level of art in this community is amazing. Everyone owes it to themselves to come check it out.”

A captain of industry's vision and a Pacific coastal gem 66 | MALIBUMAG.COM

50 Years of The Getty Villa

By Barbara Burke

estled on the hillside above the panoramic Pacific sits The Getty Villa, a cultural gem celebrating 50 years of art, history, and inspiration. Founded by J. Paul Getty, a captain of industry and an avid collector of objects de art, artifacts, and historical documents, the Getty Villa stands as a testament to his passion for preserving the past and sharing it with the world.

In the late 1940s, Getty installed his growing art collection at his 64-acre Malibu Ranch. Recognizing that the Southern California coast shared a Mediterranean-like climate similar to that of the area surrounding Italy's Bay of Naples in 1970, he decided to construct a new museum building modeled after the luxury villa destroyed in the Italian region by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Known as the Villa dei Papiri ("Villa of the Papyruses"), the seaside estate near the town of Herculaneum was, scholars surmise, most likely owned by Julius Caesar's father-in-law, Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesonius (100-43BC), whom Getty greatly admired.

The Villa is modeled after a first-century Italian villa and features Greek and Roman artifacts, offering an incomparable setting for the enjoyment of both the arts and culture of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. Getty created the Villa as a space for art, performances, family activities, lectures, theater, academic scholarship, and conservation. Those who visit the Villa will find themselves immersed in a classical past that Getty so loved.

"Go to Pompeii and Herculaneum to see Roman villas the way they are now. Then, go to Malibu and see the way they were in ancient times," Getty once said. He and his team worked assiduously to recreate an archaeological site from Villa dei Papiri. Once completed, he remarked, "I believe that the ancient Roman proprietor of the Villa dei Papiri would find the peristyle garden in the museum very close to the one in Herculaneum."

SPRING 2024 | 67

A Conversation with Kenneth Lapatin, Curator of Antiquities Malibu Magazine sat down with the Getty Villa's Curator of Antiquities, Kenneth Lapatin, whose vast wealth of knowledge regarding the construction of the venue and its curation brings the museum, its gardens, and its collections to life.

Getty, who described himself as "addicted to art collecting" in his autobiography, As I See It, also had an equally intriguing pastime, according to Lapatin, who notes, "Getty built an animal enclosure with bears and bison on his Malibu ranch."

site, rendered after an excavation revealed the structure and its contents, some of which were incredibly preserved. The excavation recovered bronze and marble sculptures, wall paintings, colorful stone pavements, and over one thousand papyrus scrolls.

"In 1951, Getty went to England to operate his businesses, but he never returned to Malibu because, later in his life, he developed a fear of flying," Lapatin explained. "However, he kept purchasing art and having it shipped to Malibu for the museum."

Assisted by consultant Norman Neuerburg (1926-1997), an art preservationist and restorer, Getty worked assiduously with his architects and other consultants to ensure the Villa authentically depicted that Swiss engineer's replica. The scale, appearance, and some of the materials of the Getty Villa reflect the Villa dei Papiri, such as the Getty Villa's floor plan—a mirror of the original Villa dei Papiri.

In 1953, Getty founded the Getty Trust, and in 1954, he opened the ranch to the public as the J. Paul Getty Museum. He is buried on part of the Villa grounds that are now designated a private cemetery, as are two of his sons. "Getty," Lapatin notes, "felt that art made people better." So, he just kept increasing his collection of works. Over time, Getty added to the building, and by the late 1960s, he decided it needed to expand further, ultimately determining that the best place to build was in the lemon groves on his ranch parcel.

Jean Paul Getty "Getty bought the 64-acre ranch—once part of the Rancho Boca de Santa Monica, an early-19th-Century 6,656-acre Mexican land grant—in 1945, right after World War II," Lapatin says. "He purchased it for Theodora "Teddy" Getty, his fifth wife, as a weekend retreat where Teddy could ride horses and he could display his growing art collection. Teddy's memoirs discuss the art collections and the renovation of the house that added a second story and several Spanish-style features." Lapatin adds, "Before Mr. Getty bought the ranch, he and Teddy lived at what is now a large, modern condo complex, 270 Palisades Drive, right next to the now-demolished, 110room mansion that his friend and rival art collector, William Randolph Hearst, built for the actress Marion Davies. The Davies estate is now the Annenberg Community Beach House at Santa Monica Beach."

68 | MALIBUMAG.COM

"Getty's architects developed several plans in a variety of styles, ranging from Spanish and European to modern. However, he finally decided to construct a replica of Villa dei Papiri, noting he did not want to construct a concrete, steel, and glass building." Lapatin recounts Getty's fascination with Villa dei Papiri, particularly with a Swiss mining engineer's 1750 replica of the ancient

Gardens are also an integral element of the Getty Villa's setting as they were in ancient Roman homes. The Villa's gardens showcase herbs and shrubs inspired by those grown in ancient Roman homes for both cuisine and ceremonies. Between 1997 and 2006, the Getty Villa underwent a major renovation by architects Rodolfo Machado and Jorge Silvetti, who retained the original design but moved the main entrance and installed windows and skylights in the upper galleries. The architects also added a new parking structure, an entrance pavilion, and a classical outdoor theater to the property. "The Villa originally opened in 1974. So, this year, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the [Getty] Villa and the 70th anniversary of the Getty Museum.

A bird’s-eye view of the Getty Villa is shown in this undated photo. John Paul Getty modeled the museum after Villa dei Papiri, a building destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

Exploring The Getty A visit to the Getty begins in an expansive, open-air pavilion and progresses along a scenic pathway to the heart of the venue. One's first view of the Villa includes the original museum building and the Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman Theater, a 450-seat outdoor classical theater emulating ancient prototypes. For those intrigued by Mr. Getty's vision, there are architecture and garden tours four times a day, wherein one can discover the rich mythological and cultural sources of the Villa's gardens. The venue also offers exhibition and collection tours. For scholars and those interested in a more academic perspective of the Getty Villa and its historical documents, the Getty Library provides invaluable resources, and the Research Institute is an international center for the study of visual art. Getty's Conservation Institute advances art history conservation practices, and the Getty Foundation funds research and preservation of the visual arts. The Getty Villa stands as a testament to the enduring passion of J. Paul Getty for art and culture. It is a place where the past comes alive, where visitors can immerse themselves in the grandeur of ancient civilizations. As it celebrates its 50th anniversary, the Getty Villa continues to be a beacon of inspiration and a bridge to the rich cultural heritage of Greece, Rome, and Etruria. There truly is something to delight and educate every visitor at the Getty Villa.

Is your New Year ringing with Wedding Bells? The start of the year brings new beginnings, dedication to progress and hope for the future. With a new engagement or wedding on the horizon, where do you begin? Southern California boasts a myriad of picturesque venues, from the Canyons to the Beach. Your first choice may not be the most convenient for local or international guests, but with the right company to assist with transportation, your dream can easily be a reality. When planning for your big day, you may consider a rehearsal dinner at one of the fabulous restaurants near your hotel. New friends and family can enjoy getting to know one another to and from dinner while safely sipping a glass of champagne on board a luxurious party bus, eliminating the hassle of ride shares or picking a designated driver. Detailed planning, timing and coordination are key to making your day a success. It’s best to choose a company that has customized service options to meet your needs and does not take a cookie cutter approach. A company that is a veteran in their industry, carries more than the minimum of liability insurance and has a wide variety of vehicles is a must. They should also be knowledgeable with popular venues and establish clear communication with your wedding planner or yourself regarding best practices, expectations and your timeline. An expert Limousine or Transportation company also asks all the right questions to

align with how you envision the day to unfold and anticipates conflicts to make alternative suggestions. Flawless execution will also include impeccably dressed and experienced drivers, who follow the schedule to keep the festivities running smoothly. For your wedding day, a classic white or black stretch limousine or Mercedes Party Bus is perfect for transporting the bridal party or groomsmen separately to keep that mystery until the desired moment. A glowing sunset backdrop for your wedding party photos can also be a stop along the way to your reception venue. Small to Large Party Buses can easily accommodate guests from adjacent hotels and/or car parks if you have picked a remote location outside the city. For transportation that includes children or the elderly, you may want to choose a charter style vehicle equipped with seat belts for safety. Need to transport equipment, decor or luggage to the venue along with your passengers? A luxurious Grech Party Coach has an expansive undercarriage for doing just that. And last but not least, some bride and grooms choose to have their very own getaway vehicle such as a Mercedes 550 S Class, Luxury SUV or small stretch limousine. Whichever way you choose to celebrate, make sure to put transportation at the forefront of your agenda and let Malibu Limousine help plan your event! hen it comes to building or renovating a home, those seeking energy and time-saving smart features have myriad options for almost every aspect of the interior and exterior of their homes. Smart technology is constantly evolving and improving, making solutions for homeowners increasingly

user-friendly and efficient. Malibu Magazine sat down with two local design and architectural experts to learn more about the latest and greatest cuttingedge, eco-friendly, and sustainable practices for our homes in 2024. “Total-home control smart devices provide homeowners with the ability to adjust the amount of daylight and electric light, the temperature, and the power used by appliances in a room or throughout a home,” says Jeanette Tang, Vice President and Director of Interior Design for Malibu’s Burdge and Associates Architects. “The most common smart devices include lighting control systems, and the companies we work with improve their technology every year.”

Smart devices ensure security in the home Smart cameras also empower clients to monitor the security in their homes. Nowadays, one can view what is happening on their property from virtually anywhere. “One of the most convenient smart features are battery back-ups, so that when there is a power outage or a natural disaster, these back-ups are available instead of having to rely on a generator,” Blumenberg says. “The newer batteries can provide power for eight hours. So, if a customer generally relies on solar energy and something happens at night or weather conditions are not generating enough solar power, the smart battery provides the necessary power.”

SPRING 2024 | 85

Entering the age of entirely electric homes What does the future hold for homes and remodels? “Everything is going electric,” Blumenberg notes. “Many cities, including Los Angeles, are trying to make people go all-electric, which can be worrisome if there is a power outage. The trend is geared toward alleviating pollution caused by natural gas." Projects in Malibu often incorporate and showcase such smart-design features. Tang considers homes that Burdge Architects recently built. MariSol Zero One, completed in 2021, is California’s first Zero-Carbon home and one of four sustainable, eco-friendly homes. Located between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the modern ranch-style property sits on a two-acre lot.

"MariSol homes are sustainably sourced from American-made, local, and renewable materials." “These homes are all electric and net-zero carbon,” she says. Net-Zero homes take into consideration the carbon that is produced from the materials used in both building and operating the home. All the materials used for the MariSol homes are sustainably sourced from American-made, local, and renewable materials. Their exteriors feature a lush, native flora that provides a habitat for local fauna. The MariSol homes were built in collaboration with the International Living Future Institute and are backed by on-site solar panels. This year brings new, energy-efficient, sustainable, eco-friendly, and green options for homeowners building or renovating homes. Light control. Temperature control. Appliance control. Shade control. Blumenberg and Burdge Architects, two of Malibu’s finest design and architectural firms, curate all the latest and most elegant smart controls and automated systems tailored to your lifestyle.

DESIGN TRENDS FOR

2024 A Fusion of Timeless Classics and Innovative Concepts By Madeline Wright

D

esign trends are constantly evolving, and as we enter a new year, we are witnessing a blend of classic elements that will stand the test of time and some innovative ideas that may come and go. Whether you are contemplating a home

renovation, embarking on new construction, or simply aiming to revitalize your living space, consider these key trends that experts say offer room for personalization to suit your own style, all while complementing the stunning aesthetic of our beautiful coastline of Malibu.

Revival of Bold Colors Bold colors are making a triumphant comeback in the world of design. While neutral tones remain relevant, this year marks the resurgence of bold and vibrant choices. Expect an influx of daring and lively colors that breathe fresh life into your living spaces. While neutrals offer timeless elegance and flexibility, there’s an undeniable thrill in embracing rich, vivid hues. These vibrant colors have the remarkable ability to inject vitality and personality into any room, creating a dynamic and visually captivating atmosphere. Venturing into playful color combinations can transform your home into a unique and expressive sanctuary that reflects your distinct personality and style. 2024 encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and explore the full spectrum of color possibilities. Whether it involves accent walls, colorful furniture selections, or eclectic decor accents, this trend invites you to unleash your imagination, creating spaces that mirror your vibrancy and spirit. Your home becomes an authentic representation of you. Embrace the resurgence of color and make your living spaces truly vibrant and personal in the coming year.

Handcrafted Features In today’s world dominated by mass production and uniformity, there’s a heartening revival of appreciation for the artistry and authenticity of handmade craftsmanship. People are increasingly recognizing the value of items meticulously crafted by skilled artisans. These handcrafted treasures bear the unique marks of human touch and dedication, embodying a sense of individuality and character that factory-produced goods cannot replicate. Whether it’s custom-made furniture handcrafted by an experienced woodworker or artisanal ceramics molded and glazed with precision and care, incorporating these handmade elements into your living spaces can invigorate your surroundings. Each piece tells a story, carrying with it the artisan’s expertise, passion, and distinctive touch. These pieces celebrate the beauty of imperfections, adding warmth and authenticity to your home.

Textured Surfaces In the dynamic world of interior design this year, texture takes center stage as a captivating and evolving trend. One resurgent wave in home decor is the revival of fluted cabinets and panels. These intricately textured and grooved details are capturing attention as they inject depth and visual allure into various aspects of interior aesthetics, including cabinetry, walls, and furniture. As the design landscape evolves, the era of plain white walls is gracefully giving way, and the dominance of sleek, high-gloss finishes is diminishing. What’s gaining prominence are finishes that exude artistry and craftsmanship, such as Roman clay or lime wash, which bestow surfaces with a luxurious sueded texture. Hand-tooled plaster is also emerging as a favored choice. Additionally, the texture trend extends to patterns, with threedimensional wooden motifs making a significant impact on the design scene.

"There’s an undeniable thrill in embracing rich, vivid hues." SPRING 2024 | 89

Timeless Wood Wood has an enduring appeal in interior design, captivating people across generations. Its ability to exude warmth and authenticity resonates with homeowners seeking a connection to nature amid the fast-paced modern world. Designers and homeowners increasingly appreciate wood’s versatility, which allows it to be expertly crafted into various styles and finishes, complementing both contemporary and traditional aesthetics. Wood’s charm extends beyond its visual appeal; it enhances interior spaces while promoting a healthier living environment by improving indoor air quality and overall well-being. Its durability and longevity make it a practical choice, capable of withstanding daily wear and tear while retaining its aesthetic charm. Whether used for flooring, cabinetry, furniture, or decorative accents, wood’s timeless allure aligns with the growing demand for aesthetic beauty and environmental responsibility in our living spaces. This year wood is set to play an even more prominent role in interior design. Wood infuses interiors with a natural and earthy ambiance, adding warmth and character to any room.

Marble All Around Marble, once relegated primarily to the realms of kitchens and bathrooms, has transcended its traditional boundaries, venturing into diverse applications within modern homes. This opulent and enduring material now graces floors, countertops, and various decorative elements, imparting an unmistakable touch of luxury and sophistication. The allure of marble lies in its unparalleled elegance, marked by distinctive veining and a lustrous surface that effortlessly elevates any room’s aesthetic. Its innate beauty and adaptability harmonize seamlessly with a wide spectrum of design styles, ranging from timeless classics to contemporary compositions. By incorporating marble in unexpected places such as living rooms, dining areas, or as captivating decorative accents, a sense of coherence prevails, elevating the entire design scheme. As we stride into 2024, this trend underscores the enduring charm of this exquisite material, as it metamorphoses interior spaces into showcases of timeless grace and opulence. Simultaneously, an embracing of natural aged stone finishes has surged in popularity, imbuing spaces with a rustic and timeworn allure. These organic materials, suited for both indoor and outdoor applications, establish a profound connection between the interior space and its natural surroundings.

Checkerboard In 2024, checkerboard patterns are making a return to the forefront of interior design trends. This motif, celebrated for its timeless allure, has been reinvented and rejuvenated with today’s modern aesthetics, offering a seamless fusion of nostalgia and contemporary style. Checkerboard patterns have found their way into various design facets, spanning from floors to walls, furniture to decor. A particularly prominent application is seen in flooring, where bold black and white checkerboard tiles make a striking visual statement. This dynamic interplay between light and dark infuses spaces with a touch of drama and sophistication, rendering them more expansive and captivating. Expanding beyond the monochromatic palette, designers have embarked on creative explorations with color combinations, introducing checkerboard patterns in an extensive spectrum of hues. The versatility of checkerboard patterns transcends flooring; it is also making its mark in wall treatments, textiles, and furniture upholstery. Whether it’s an eye-catching checkerboard accent wall or a cozy throw pillow adorned with the pattern, this design can be customized to complement any aesthetic, from retro-chic to minimalist-modern. It stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of certain design elements, showcasing their ability to adapt and thrive within the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary living.

Beauty of Arches Arched designs have become a prominent feature in both furniture and architectural elements within homes, revolutionizing interior aesthetic. The graceful, sweeping curves of arched doorways, windows, and furniture components are reshaping living spaces, imparting an enduring sense of elegance. Within architectural contexts, arched features infuse homes with an air of grandeur and sophistication. They introduce captivating visual dynamics, fostering a harmonious flow and imbuing rooms with a softer, more inviting ambiance. Arched doorways, in particular, serve as captivating focal points, directing attention and establishing welcoming transitions between areas. In furniture design, the integration of arched elements, such as chair backs or cabinet doors, introduces a touch of classic charm and individuality. These pieces seamlessly adapt to a variety of design styles, spanning from traditional to contemporary, offering versatile options for those looking to elevate their interior. This year we can anticipate the continued ascent of arched designs as they perpetuate a sense of enduring beauty and refinement in homes, elevating the overall aesthetics of living spaces to new heights.

“In Malibu, the endless beauty and artistry aren’t confined to canvas or galleries; they reside within the everyday people, whose lives are a testament to the natural masterpiece that is this coastal haven. Here, the art of surf becomes a vibrant thread in the tapestry of existence, where every wave ridden is a stroke of living art.” - Malibu Magazine
