WILD THINGS Where the Are

FOR VARIOUS REASONS, OFTEN THE POOR JUDGMENT OF HUMANS, WILD ANIMALS SOMETIMES FIND THEMSELVES WITH NO PLACE TO GO. NOW, A SANCTUARY THAT GIVES THEM REFUGE IS ALSO IN DANGER OF NOT HAVING A HOME.

In the hills of AguA Dulce, cAliforniA rests the sAnctuAry, AnimAl trAcks inc., which houses and cares for animals no longer able to live in the wild. Stacy Gunderson, a former movie animal trainer, purchased the land in 2001 and started the non-profit in 2008. Stacy says, “Our goal, through the use of humor, facts, and interaction with the animals, is to educate people about the importance of animals to our ecosystem…animals are part of the solution on how to heal the planet…and they need to be left in their natural habitats and not purchased to live in someone’s home, dressed in Build-A-Bear clothes. We take in animals stuck in captivity, no longer able to fend for themselves in the wild, and give them a happy life.”

That happy life involves volunteers and staff members caring for and interacting with the animals as needed. Craftsman sheds stand

ready for when it is too hot or too cold for the animals to remain outside. The animals are put together through species because isolation is damaging to them. During a recent Zoom interview, the monkeys wrestled with each other, groomed each other, ate their breakfast together all while one sat on the shoulder of Stacy attempting to remove her clear mask. The monkey worked with great diligence in her efforts to take Stacy’s mask off and finally settled with crawling inside her shirt for a hug. Stacy says, “We had to make clear masks because monkeys rely on facial expressions for communication. When we smile at them, they interpret that we want to fight. When we smack our lips together, it is interpreted as love.”

The pet trade is the fourth largest crime in the world with 50% of the mammals and 70% of insects coming from near the equator. The smugglers drug the animals for travel and many die along the way. It is important to the sanctuary that people understand wild

animals do not make good pets. They have sharp teeth and when upset, they bite. They also carry diseases. As Stacy says, “People misinterpret that these animals will be like dolls they can dress up and do not understand that they are not meant to live in someone’s home, alone, caged with no interaction other than the few hours a day offered by the owner. Our motto ‘wildlife conservation through education and adventure’ is what we strive to promote daily.”

Through the use of Zoom tours (available at this time due to Covid), Stacy and her staff educate people around the world about the

importance of these animals to our environment. Stacy says, “Monkeys have superpowers…they eat fruit from the trees, their bodies break down the fruit and they then poop out the seeds which help to seed and replant the forests.” The ‘Noah’s Ark’ of animals allows virtual guests a window into their world offering insight into how they live and interact with each other.

When Stacy bought the three-acre lot, where the animals reside on four-tenths of an acre currently, she was told that the property was all set to have animals. The house had been owned by a famous cowboy, Monte Montana, and at the time it did have the proper zoning. Unfortunately, she was not told that she would have to apply with the county to have the animals. That important county part was left out and years later in 2012, the county changed the zoning and now it is no longer appropriate to have the sanctuary on the property. Stacy was informed in February 2020, that they would have to relocate and while she has found a place to move the animals, the move comes at a steep price: $500,000.

The new location, four miles down the road, requires a public restroom, barns, and all the indoor and outdoor housing that the animals require. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to raise the $500,000. that they need, but they have only reached $40,000. to date. James

Gunn, director of movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy and many other TV shows and films, matched recent fundraising with $10,000. of his own money. Stacy says, “We know our mission is important; to care for these discarded ‘pets’ and to teach people of their importance to the environment and we will continue to work to raise the funds for the necessary move.” For minimal donations, they open the world of wild animals to children all over the world through Zoom tours of their facility in classrooms, at birthday parties, and individual events.

Through the tours, children see how a monkey learns important mothering skills from her mother, how a sick kangaroo is fed kangaroo poop to give it good bacteria and to help it get well, how monkeys groom themselves, and that though opossums may not be revered because of their rat-like appearance, they do eat 30,000 ticks in their lifetime.

BLUE MIKAL'S HEAVEN

FROM COLBIE CAILLAT TO ONE REPUBLIC, TOAD THE WET SPROCKET TO FIVE FOR FIGHTING, PRODUCER MIKAL BLUE AND HIS REVOLVER STUDIOS HAS CREATED A LOCAL HAVEN WHERE MUSICIANS CAN REALIZE THEIR POTENTIAL

Though his British accent has faded into more of a melodic, singsongy way of speaking than a foreign dialect — singer, songwriter and record producer Mikal Blue’s upbringing in Bishop Auckland, a small town twenty miles outside of Newcastle, shaped not only the way he approaches the recording process, but also the way he channels inspiration at his Thousand Oaks studio. “I live music, even at my house, I’m looking at a few guitars in my bedroom right now and I’ve got the studio set up here as well,” says Blue.

Hailing from the same place as Sting, Blue says the Beatles actually made the biggest impression on him as a child. “I fell in love with the Beatles at age six when my mom gave me a stack of singles and a turntable. Suddenly all I wanted to do was sing and write songs,” says Blue.

At fourteen, he’d mastered Beatles renditions and at fifteen he started performing in local clubs. That led to Mikal touring as a solo act through Greece, Austria, Germany and Holland before coming to The States and becoming a local favorite in Aspen Colorado. From there he moved to Southern California after winning a national songwriting context

and getting his first of 3 major record deals. At that time, he changed his name from the traditional spelling of Michael to Mikal, and adopted the last name Blue as a nod to the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour booklet, that his musical aspirations took flight.

In 2002, Blue ventured to Thousand Oaks after being signed to Ken Caillat‘s record Label ‘Immergent’. Known for producing Fleetwood Mac, Ken, who’s teenage daughter Colbie had not yet been discovered, introduced Mikal to the area. “I visited Thousand Oaks and thought it was a beautiful place to relocate. Ken is the reason I ended up here. He was a real fan of my music and writing and he came out of retirement to produce my record in 2001,” says Blue.

But upon meeting Caillat’s fifteen year old daughter Colbie, Blue says he knew instantly that she had raw talent and that the time had come for him to pursue producing. “I didn’t mind focusing on producing and co-writing other artists’ music because I had always been fascinated with recording and I love the whole process," he says. With Colbie coming into the studio, the pair would write songs together and record singles, paving the way for Blue to build his reputation as a renowned nurturer of young talent. Shortly

32 Hidden Hills Magazine | Winter 2020/21

thereafter, he played an integral role in aiding newer bands like One Republic, Augustana, Delta Spirit and The Daylights in signing to major labels.

Former OneRepublic bassist, and Hidden Hills resident, Tim Myers, fondly recalls meeting with Blue when he was just 18 years old. “It’s amazing how he can crack talent. He’ll find young people like me and open up a studio and even with the tiniest budget, we were able to record a ton of songs with him,” says Myers. And it was those songs that Myers and his band members recorded, like “Apologize” and “Stop and Stare,” that earned them a Grammy nomination as well as Platinum certification for their debut album “Dreaming Out Loud.” Eighteen years later, Myers says he and Blue have maintained their unique relationship. “We ended up just building a friendship and a bond. He has such a great heart for young talent and there’s always been a family setting at his studio,” says Myers.

While Blue’s personal career as an artist never quite clicked the way he’d hoped, transitioning to the role of a producer proved to be just the change he needed.

“I had put in the hours on ProTools and the talent I was meeting with was mind blowing,” says Blue. But it wasn’t just the talent that led to his success. Blue credits his locale with helping him succeed.

“Hollywood was never the right place for me, there were too many distractions. I felt more comfortable in the outskirts, in the open space. The fresh air and the vibe up here fits me better,” says Blue.

Since moving to the area nearly 20 years ago, he had his sights set on a nearby studio, known to have been the place where Fleetwood Mac recorded decades prior. “In 2010 there was a for lease sign outside and I didn’t even call, I just knocked on the door,” he says of the ten thousand square foot studio he now refers to as his home away from home. “It needed so much repair, it was a studio in the 1970s, so a lot was already set up, but I turned it into a really magical little spot,” says Blue.

John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting has known Blue for thirteen years, and

34 Hidden Hills Magazine | Winter 2020/21

actually moved to the area because he started using Blue’s unparalleled studio. “As a businessman, he’s one of the few studio owners who has kept the magic of working in a recording studio alive to the benefit of all the artists and producers under his roof,” says Ondrasik.

Dubbed Revolver Recordings, Blue tapped into the mindset of what it might be like to work in England’s Abbey Road Studios while designing his own ten thousand square foot space. “I tried to make it vibey and comfortable and there’s a lot of mood lighting, lava lamps and things to try to set the tone,” says Blue. In addition to outfitting each room with a theme, Blue relied on his collection of vintage equipment to make the space feel inspirational. “I’ve got vintage amps, Fender Rhodes pianos, Hammond Organs, Yamaha grands, everywhere you look there’s a way to be inspired — you could accidentally write a song,” he says. Among the rooms he’s created to insight musical enchantment are what he refers to as the Buddha room, Kauai room, psychedelic room, Memphis room, Nashville room and the dimly lit sapphire room.

Ondrasik points out that in the past, artists recording in a studio complex led to many creative collaborations. “These days, everyone makes records on their laptops at home due to budgetary reasons, and unless you’re a superstar, you don’t pay two thousand dollars per day to go to a recording studio. “In Mikal’s studio, he

COLBIE CAILLAT

has eight to ten producers and artists of different genres and stages of their careers under one roof, and those dynamics of running into someone at lunch and writing a song or singing on someone’s record that used to be so much the part of the music business experience can actually happen,” says Ondrasik.

With young talent like Hidden Hills’ Sophie Rose Abrams and Nick Isham on his roster, Blue says he’s worked with kids as young as thirteen, and even at that age, he’s able to get an immediate sense of their potential. “When I met Sophie, she sounded like a fully polished adult artist with perfect pitch and her writing skills were on point,” he says. But, working with youngsters isn’t as important as it used to be. Labels used to push to sign younger artists before people

started releasing their own music from their bedroom. “You’ve got more to write about when you’re older, there’s more heartache,” says Blue. Still, he continues to be impressed by the young talent coming out of the Hidden Hills area.

As a father to two teenagers, one of whom he says has been writing songs since she was six, Blue is adamant that he’s never pushed music on his offspring, though it’s been a constant part of their lives. Now, they’re witnessing their dad work from home full time. “For the past nine months I’ve been working remotely, and ironically, the first thing I did remotely was with Rita Wilson on March 31st, right after she and Tom tested positive for COVID-19 in Australia,” says Blue. As a result, he helped Wilson build a small

36 Hidden Hills Magazine | Winter 2020/21

studio in her Pacific Palisades home where she was able to record a song remotely.

Outside his day job, Blue’s passions remain musical. “I put together a charity event back in 2019 after the Borderline shooting, because it was a place I’ve always gone to and taken my family to,” says Blue. To help him orchestrate the event, Blue tapped pals Rita Wilson and Jason Mraz and enlisted Colbie Caillat, Rick Springfield, Pablo Cruz, Glen Phillips and Nick Isham to perform. “Over the course of two events, we raised $656K which all went back directly to the Borderline families,” he says. “I won a Grammy with Jason back in 2009 for Lucky and he got back to me in two minutes willing to help in any way he could,” says Blue.

But amid the current global health crisis, he’s still able to identify silver linings. Currently, he’s finishing up a third record for alternative rock band Toad The Wet Sprocket which will be released in February 2021. “All the guys have set up little home studios and without a pandemic, the guys would have been on tour and we wouldn’t be able to make an album,” says Blue.

Ultimately, Blue’s desire to usher adolescent talent through the complex recording process has come full circle since he was a teen himself. Though he’s now in his 50s, he has the type of sprightly vigor that only accompanies someone who is truly young at heart — and who maintains a lifelong commitment to passing a love of music onto new generations. And as someone who is also active in the community, Ondrasik says Blue’s heart is equal to his talents. ‘We’re lucky to have him in our neck of the woods." `

IT’S AMAZING HOW HE CAN CRACK TALENT. HE’LL FIND YOUNG PEOPLE LIKE ME AND OPEN UP A STUDIO AND EVEN WITH THE TINIEST BUDGET, WE WERE ABLE TO RECORD A TON OF SONGS WITH HIM, TIM MYERS - WRITER/PRODUCER & CO-FOUNDER OF "ONE REPUBLIC"

NOVEL GROUP EDUCATION

Novel Education Group is an elite, all-inclusive agency providing homeschooling, private tutoring, enrichment programs, and aca-demic services for K-12 students. Its innovative philosophies are rooted in open and flexible teaching methods that underscore students’ passions, which allow them to discover their purpose.

Founder Tiffany Sorya says “We strive to change the way youth approach education by guiding them

into gaining a new appre-ciation for knowledge and showing them how it can impact every aspect of their lives. If we’ve successfully changed the way stu-dents perceive the value of learning, then we can change the way our younger generation engages with education on a larger scale.”

As Tiffany began her tutoring career in Los Angeles at the age of 23, she began to notice a large discrepancy between passions and academic excellence. Students were beginning to lose re-spect for

education and no longer saw the value in investing time in school. She began to see constant success stories of young adults who gave up on traditional education to start their own companies or influencers who turned into entrepreneurs. Tiffany made it her mission to show the importance of education by making smart stylish again.

Enrolling in homeschooling with Novel Education is far different from

WITHIN ten10

the conventional homeschooling experience. Upon regis-tration, the student’s transcripts are evaluated by a team of pro-fessionals who create a list of suggested core subjects and elec-tives. Students work one-on-one with a private teacher, who handles every aspect of the curriculum including materials, as-signments, pacing and any additional activities needed for fur-ther study. All parts of the curriculum development is custom-ized for the student.

Novel Education understands that teaching and learning is not a one size fits all approach so the traditional curriculum or standardized pacing seen in conventional school settings does not work for everyone. Novel was created for the student-not just for their individual learning styles, but for their individual lifestyle. Learn-ing and life are one and the same, and Novel works to curate whatever and however you want to learn, from wherever and whenever you want to learn it.

The average seat time for homeschooling with Novel Education Group is 15 hours per week. From this method, Tiffany and her team have noticed the growth of positive relationships with edu-cation and a decrease in learning fatigue and disinterest. More importantly, more time for students translates to greater en-gagement in extra curricular activities such as Novel’s custom designed enrichment programs where they can gain credits while pursuing personal interests. Many of Novel’s students are currently participating in these 4 to 18-week enrichment pro-grams that are fully customized for each student and follow a detailed curriculum with clear benchmarks and assignments. Students can choose from a multitude of programs from creating a superhero film, to designing their own city out of recy-cled materials. Younger

students can grab a group of friends and choose from a selection of best selling novels to read in a virtual book club.

Novel Education is working to break negative connotations surrounding traditional school by bringing a new perspective to education. Knowledge is cool and helping students develop a love for learning by finding their passions and exploring their interests is our fundamental approach for #MakingSmartStylishAgain. Students are able to achieve high academic success while be-ing creative and pursuing hobbies and career goals that com-plement his or her schooling and enrich the rest of their lives.

THE PLANT HEALTH SPECIALISTS THAT KEEP YOUR YARD THRIVING

GREENLEAF PRO

Imagine going to the doctor for a physical that includes nothing more than a quick visual once-over and the suggestion to eat, drink and maybe to take some vitamins. As a living thing, it would not be much to go on and certainly would not instill confidence in your long-term health. This however is

how most homeowners approach the care of their trees and shrubs, often leaving the feeding and protection of their greenery to their gardener and crew, who’s main concern is to, as they say in the industry, “mow, blow and go.” Yes, occasionally this regimen will involve the scattering of fertilizer, but, as the team at Greenleaf Pro Plant Health Care

knows, it’s a bit more involved than just that. “Trees are living organisms, and, in many ways, they are not much different than you or me,” says Richard Merjil, , arborist, plant health care specialist and co-owner. “Each of us needs a certain regimen of nutrients and preventative care to keep us healthy and happy, and so do they.”

WITHIN ten10

While you may gaze out your window and see the simplicity of a suburban outdoor environment, what often is happening is much more complex. Some trees, like oaks, peppers or sycamores, may be native, some may have been planted, non-indigenous, and may be four, five or six decades rooted deep into the soil. One species is next to another and lawns or planters may abut a tree that only needs winter watering. Situations like this are common and, when unaddressed, often lead to landscape health issues that could ultimately be fatal for that tree that you love. “Some trees have a history behind them that is personal to the homeowner. It could be a Christmas tree from their first Christmas at the home. It could be the tree with the swing their kids grew up with. There’s an integrative part of making sure that each is protected fed and treated in a manner that is suitable for that individual species.”

So, Greenleaf Pro employs a holistic approach to plant health care, going much deeper than the surface. It may begin with a soils test, which measures the nutrient levels and pH of your dirt. This informs the next step, which could be treatments like pressure injections, which get fertilizers deep into the soil where the roots can absorb the nutrients. Or preventative care, like systemic treatments or vaccinations (yes… vaccinations) that ward off invasive species like “Shot-hole” bores or Asian citrus psyllid, which can kill off your orange, grapefruit, lemon or lime trees. In essence, Greenleaf Pro applies the age-old discipline of “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” ensuring that threats are addressed before they become a serious problem. This includes protection from garden pests that can wreak havoc, like gophers and aphids, as well as ones that can

make their way into your home, like ants, earwigs or spiders.

If your trees happen to be affected by any ailment, it’s not too late. Greenleaf Pro specializes in every available option, including organic or all natural treatments, to effectively address each challenge and bring your yard back to its topnotch health and fullest potential.

44 Hidden Hills Magazine | Winter 2020/21 OVEN BAKED MAC & CHEESE FIG & SPRIG CULINARY CREATIONS COURTESY OF CHEF CLAUDINE BERNARD OF FIG & SPRIG CALABASAS figandsprig.com (818) 222-5195

Chef Claudine says in her years of making this classic dish via many different methods, this is the best way to make Mac n Cheese. The traditional way (a béchamel with the addition of cheese) turns out quite dry in her opinion, but she guarantees that this recipe is cheesy goodness!

And it reheats beautifully.

MAKES 8 SERVINGS

Ingredients

• 1 lb macaroni

• 8 tablespoons butter

• 1 tablespoon butter

• 1/2 cup muenster cheese, shredded

• 1/2 cup mild cheddar cheese, shredded

• 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

• 1/2 cup Monterey jack cheese, shredded

• 2 cups half-and-half

• 2 eggs, lightly beaten

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1/2 tsp extra virgin olive oil

The Process

Preheat oven to 350.

Lightly butter a deep 2 1/2 quart baking dish. Fill a large pot with water and bring to a rapid boil. Add macaroni.

Cook for 7 minutes, or until tender. Drain well, and return to the pot.

Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, melt 8 tablespoons of the butter. Stir into macaroni. In a large bowl, combine all of the shredded cheeses with the macaroni, half and half, eggs, and salt.

Transfer to the prepared casserole dish, and top with remaining 1/2 cup shredded cheese.

Dot with remaining 1 TB of the butter.

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and bubbly.

cranberry orange SCONES figandsprig.com (818) 222-5195

Ingredients

• 2 cups all purpose flour

• 1 Tbsp baking powder

• 3 Tbsp sugar

• 1/2 tsp salt

• 1/2 cup dried cranberries, diced

• Zest of 1 orange

• 5 Tbsp unsalted butter, cold and cubed (at least 83% butter fat)

• 1 cup cold heavy/whipping cream

The Process

In a large bowl, measure the flour, baking powder, sugar, orange zest and salt. Whisk the flour mixture with a wire whisk to uniformly combine the dry ingredients.

Incorporate the ice cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture by rubbing or smearing the butter between your fingertips (between thumb, index and middle finger) as you toss them around in the flour mixture. Work fast rubbing through all the big lumps of butter and the mixture should resemble coarse bread crumbs. You can use 2 butter knives to carry out this step instead of using your fingers.

Mix in the diced cranberries.

Stir in the cold cream with a spatula or fork until the dough comes together.

Transfer the dough onto the tabletop and give it a few gentle kneads (less than 10) to make it come together as a dough.

Lightly flour the surface of the tabletop and press the dough into a 3 - 4 cm thick round disc.

Lightly flour the surface of the dough and the 4 cm diameter round cutter and cut into pieces.

Place the cut pieces, spacing them 3 cm apart, onto a baking sheet lined with baking paper.

Press the remaining scraps together and cut more pieces until the dough is used up. Or, you can use a knife to cut the scones into 10 equal wedges if you do not own a cookie cutter.

At this stage, the scones can be frozen and stored in an airtight container for up to a week. Just bake them frozen but you need to add 3 - 5 minutes of extra bake time if doing so.

Space the scones 3 cm apart and bake in a preheated oven at 220 degrees C or 428 degrees

F, on the middle rack of the oven, for 12 - 15 minutes or until the tops are lightly golden brown.

ART PIVOT

AFTER 16 YEARS AS A PSYCHIATRIST, REBECCA REYES TAKES A TURN TO EXPLORE OLD PASSIONS AND A NEW PATH

Art can serve as the meeting point between seemingly disparate facets of life, acting as a place where various passions, ideas, and people come together.

Rebecca Reyes’s art explores the intersection between the female form, nature, mental health, and modern society at large–an intersection she is uniquely poised to navigate. Her 16-year background as a psychiatrist–as well as her experiences as the mother of four daughters and recently licensed yoga and

meditation instructor–informs Rebecca’s work. For the entirety of her life, Rebecca has identified as an artist. After receiving a B.A. in Art History from Lake Forest College, however, Rebecca decided to pursue a different career path, enrolling in medical school and beginning her training as a psychiatrist. Upon completing her residency at UCLA in 2002, Rebecca began a long career in medicine, a career in which she thrived and excelled. Art, however, retained a deeply significant place in her life, and in 2016, she made the difficult decision to step away

Winter 2020/21 | Hidden Hills Magazine 53

from medicine and focus on her artwork full-time. Rebecca’s paintings–especially her figurative pieces–are deeply emotional, and draw heavily upon natural, organic elements. Underlying these influences, her love of structure and design comes through in the sharp, meticulous quality of much of her work. Rebecca’s most recent pieces–intricate renderings of flowers and vegetation in acrylics on wood panels–encapsulate her eclectic influences. The measured, detailed nature of the work recalls the intricacy of a mandala, leaving

the viewer with a feeling of peace and appreciation for patience. Patience, of course, is something Rebecca needed a lot of in her long, unconventional journey toward her ultimate goal–being an artist.

Since embarking on this new path, Rebecca’s work has gained attention from many members of the community. Her pieces have found homes in Hidden Hills and Bel Air, and her current works are available for purchase on her website (rebeccareyes.net).

Although Rebecca has made the decision to pursue her art and yoga instructing full-time, she has only love and appreciation for her past as a psychiatrist and has hope that artistic fields and western medicine can become more connected with each other in the future. Rebecca’s work in both art and yoga is not so much a divergence from her background in mental health, but rather a continuation of it. “I think art can really unite,” Rebecca says. “Everything is adjunctive. There’s a multi-factorial way to approach everything in life. Nothing is black and white. This space, the intersection between art, yoga, and medicine, makes me feel really happy and connected with people.”

FROM PELOTON TO PICKELBALL: PAINFUL FOOT CONDITIONS ARE ON THE RISE AS A NEW GENERATION OF PANDEMICALLY CREATED FITNESS BUFFS EMERGE

Now more than ever the sports medicine community has been asked to take a proactive stance to ensure the wellness of today’s recreational athlete and exercise enthusiast. For the many who have pivoted into well-intended fitness programs, mostly of personal design, an unintended result of these workouts and regular training sessions has been a pandemic of foot pain.

COVID-19 has now called health care professionals into action to meet the overwhelming needs of the newly created generation of fitness buffs to deal with the myriad of painful overuse conditions that affect the foot, ankle, knee, hip and lower back. As a board-certified podiatric sports medicine specialist, Fellow of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine and MD Affiliate of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine I have always taken my role

of team and consulting podiatrist to professional franchises, university athletic departments and my care of recreational athletes, very seriously. The Covid-19 climate has increased athletic participation by the world’s population and created a never before seen statistical uptick in podiatric related conditions clearly related to the global pandemic.

More and more my allopathic and podiatric colleagues are encountering musculoskeletal

70 Hidden Hills Magazine | Winter 2020/21

pathologies such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, peroneal tendinopathies, shin splints, stress reactions, stress fractures, ankle sprains, patellar tendinitis, knee, hip and lower back pain on the rise with many of these issues not only caused by overuse but significantly by inappropriately selected athletic shoes. Overuse injuries are microtraumas to bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments caused by unaccustomed repetitive action. Without proper recovery time, rest and rehabilitation the affected sites can become painful and occasionally debilitating.

To avoid and prevent overuse injuries, I suggest following the guidance of a skilled athletic trainer, coach, or sports medicine specialist, warm up properly before a workout, increase athletic participations gradually and follow correct training techniques in addition to changing workout regimens intermittently. Podiatrically speaking, it is imperative to select and utilize proper athletic shoes and supportive gear to avoid and prevent musculoskeletal exercise induced conditions.

The Pronated Foot (commonly called a “flatfoot”) This foot type can range from flexible to hypermobile. Excess pronation or overpronation means that as you walk or run, your foot rolls toward the inside and your arch tends to flatten out. Your shoes will frequently show uneven wear on the inside portion of the shoe’s outsole.

Overpronation is more common than underpronation. If you overpronate and do not select a stabilizing (pronation controlling) running shoe, you may find yourself susceptible to pain in your heel and arch (plantar fasciitis), the inside of your ankles (posterior tibial tendinitis) and shins (anterior tibial tendinitis/shin splints), among numerous other pathologies.

In the biodynamics of athletic shoe construction there are two diametrically opposed principles: control and comfort.

The more controlling and stabilizing the shoe, the less comfortable it tends to be perceived. And vice versa, the more comfortable the shoe is, the less controlling it tends to be.

The pronated foot requires a solid construct with control and stability mechanisms built into the shoe, while the supinated, more rigid high arched foot requires a more moderate stabilization with cushioning intrinsic to its design.

A neutral foot, neither severely pronated nor supinated, has the luxury of selection and will adapt well to athletic shoes with mild to moderate control combined with a preferred degree of cushioning.

Pronation controlling athletic footwear possess rigid heel counters (the portion of the shoe that cradles the heel in the rear quarter). In conjunction with a proper longitudinal arch support, the counter of the stability/control shoe will hold one’s heel in a more vertical position from heel contact to propulsive toe off during ambulation and running activities.

This will in turn prevent an excessive downward and inward movement of the midfoot with outward swinging of the heel, known as eversion, and reduce the common transgressions of force from the middle inside portion of one’s foot and ankle through the knee, hip and lower back.

By reducing excessive pronatory and transgressionary forces, the control shoe will assist in diminishing biomechanical instabilities frequently observed in the overpronated athlete and

thereby assist in decreasing overuse pathologies.

The Supinated Foot (commonly called a “high arched foot”) Supination, also known as underpronation, demonstrates an insufficient inward roll of the foot while standing, walking or after landing during a run. It may be the result of having a naturally higharching foot, or it may also be caused by muscle weakness in your calves, ankles, or feet.

If you’re a runner who is a habitual supinator, you place extra stress on the outer side of your foot, which can trigger a host of issues. An easy way to tell if you’re doing this regularly is if your running shoes wear out quickly and unevenly, with breakdowns on the outer side of your shoe.

Winter 2020/21 | Hidden Hills Magazine 71

Because supinators place more pressure on the outer part of their feet, stress conditions on the fourth and/or fifth metatarsal may develop. This is because those tiny toes are doing much of the work when you push off while walking, hiking and running. In addition, lateral ankle instabilities and lateral ankle sprains are commonly seen with this foot type.

Conclusion

It’s time to avoid the painful podiatric pitfalls of the pandemic and my best advice to all is to do your due diligence and select proper athletic shoes for your walking and running activities. By following this advice, one can more assuredly reduce their susceptibility to overuse injury and continue to enjoy their healthful passions, pandemic or not.

“IDENTIFYING YOUR BIOMECHANICAL FOOT TYPE IS KEY TO PROPER ATHLETIC SHOE SELECTION AND AVOIDANCE OF PAINFUL OVERUSE INJURIES. CONCURRENTLY, PROPER ATHLETIC SHOE SELECTION IS TANTAMOUNT TO OPTIMAL ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE.”
