SHANNON MOORE RETIRES

AFTER 28 YEARS WITH THE HHCA

Shannon Moore’s 28 years of service to the Hidden Hills Community Association was celebrated at a neighborhood retirement party on July 22. The Homeowners Association is a private non-profit organization that collects an annual assessment from the homeowners to provide & maintain trails, roads, arenas, and recreational facilities. HHCA President Mitch Jacobs and Mayor Stuart Siegel regaled the party with stories from when she began working as the property manager for this unique community in the early nineties.

Shannon has helped maintain Hidden Hill’s pastoral feel where traffic jams still occur when vehicles need to yield to horses. We experience a rural country way of life where kids are able to walk to school & around the neighborhood on clean and beautiful roadways and trails. A video recognizing the positive impact Shannon

has had on the Hidden Hills Theater and Parks and Recreation Committee was produced by David Stanley & screened that evening. Neighbors enjoyed cake and champagne as they congratulated Shannon and her husband Scott on their upcoming move to North Carolina. They both are excited to participate in many fun recreational activities offered at the beach and in the mountains, and intend on enjoying the scenic beauty of this southeastern state.

There was a sign at the party that proclaimed Shannon Moore would finally be retiring after “10,173 days of dedicated service, hundreds of problems solved, countless projects, lots of meetings and everlasting memories.” We appreciate the decades of effort and wish Shannon much happiness as she begins this new chapter in her life! HOST AN EVENING OF FOOD, FUN & MAGIC FOR RESIDENTS 55 AND OVER

26 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | September 2021
COMMUNITY happenings

Neighbors seeking an entertaining night of dinner and magic were delighted by the Savvy Senior Event hosted on Sunday August 22. This event was created for the sophisticated residents of Hidden Hills aged 55 & over by the HHCA Parks & Rec Committee and hosted by Peggi Bercovitz Siegel.

Over fifty neighbors gathered at the Community Center for drinks and conversation before being served Rib Ranch Barbecue. This longtime oldschool Western-themed eatery served yummy barbecue tri-tip & chicken, along with vegetarian choices of grilled vegetables, salads and roasted potatoes.

The savory meal was followed by the fabulous David Gabbay’s one man magic show which astonished and amazed even the most critical eyes of the residents. With more than 20 years of performing experience under his belt and a fresh brand of magic he can call his own, David has become one of the most sought-after magicians in the Los Angeles area. The audience of neighbors David performed for in the theater primarily consisted of nonmagicians who were happy participants in his engaging show. He impressed the crowd with his sleight of hand and showmanship skills, along with his charismatic, fun, and engaging personality that complemented his performances.

Directly after the magic show ended, the residents returned to the party where desserts and drinks continued to be enjoyed as the residents shared amusing stories of the night of entertaining illusions. This special event was enjoyed by all as it provided a wonderful opportunity to meet and socialize with residents aged 55 & over in our wonderful community. HH

Over the past year, volunteering full time with the Labelle Foundation has been one of the most eye-opening experiences. While rescue is incredibly rewarding, it can also be harrowing to see these innocent, sentient beings tossed aside like trash. Growing up with 6 rescue dogs and being raised to love them unconditionally as family members—quirks and all—is in stark contrast with the neglect and abuse we see everyday. The amazing team of women I have worked along side this past year are such inspirations to me and I am so proud to be a part of their mission to save these sweet souls in need. I am grateful for the opportunity to reach out to my Hidden Hills community to help the Labelle Foundation save more lives! Whether you can foster a pup until they find

FOSTER A FRIEND SAVE A LIFE

THE LABELLE FOUNDATION NEEDS YOUR HELP

their furever home, adopt a new family member, or donate supplies, we couldn’t be more grateful for your support.

The Labelle Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Los Angeles foster based animal rescue that runs solely on donations and is devoted to rescuing, rehabilitating, and advocating for dogs. They specialize in medical, neo-natal orphans, and pregnant/nursing mothers, doing over 100 adoptions a month! The culmination of the Labelle Foundation began when founders, Laura and Sabrina Labelle, were asked to take the two runts of a pitbull puppy litter someone had put in a trash bag and left to die in a dumpster. They were only a few hours old when Laura and Sabrina took them in. The mother-daughter duo of The

Labelle Foundation has been growing ever since!

Throughout the past year there has been an overwhelming amount of support for the rescue community and the foundation had over 250 dogs under their care at one time. Now that life is going back to normal, they are in desperate need of fosters in order to continue saving lives. If you are interested in fostering medical dogs, a pregnant or nursing mama and her litter, adult dogs, bottle feeding, or puppies, please visit their Instagram or website for more information on how to apply!

H.O.M. Italian Eatery is a family owned and operated restaurant from the same family that introduced Da Pasquale of Beverly Hills and House of Meatballs in Westwood. H.O.M. has a double meaning: the Morra family makes everything homemade and they have the intention to make you feel right at home while you enjoy their traditional yet upscale comfort food.

We were immediately seated at a comfortable booth that had a perfect view of the light filled restaurant, brick & plant covered walls, and hardwood floors. We started our meal with some Prosecco and fresh baked warm Pane with fresh burrata, E.V.O.O. & balsamic vinegar as we examined the seasonal summer menu. H.O.M. creates homemade regional pastas and dough for their bread & pizzas. Our mouths watered

H.O.M ITALIAN KITCHEN

as we decided among the ten pizza options to order the Specktacular Pizza which is made with marinara, mozzarella, smoked prosciutto, gorgonzola & honey. The pizza was complimented with a side dish of the slightly crispy Brussel Sprouts with almonds & a honey glaze.

It was difficult to choose between the eight pasta specialties, and we were happy we decided on the creamy yet light Tagliolini Pasta with caramelized grape tomatoes, burrata mousse, & lemon zest. For the main course, there is a choice between Chicken Parmigiano, Tagliata Filet, or Branzino. We chose the Mediterranean Seabass and it was perfectly seared with a limoncello reduction and roasted garlic broccolini. H.O.M is known for their delicious desserts, so we were perplexed whether to pick the homemade Tiramisu, Creme Brûlée, or

Chocolate Ball. We opted for the Fritelle served a la mode and were not disappointed with the fried Neapolitan donuts stuffed with Nutella and topped with sugar because every bite literally melted in our mouths.

This upscale casual H.O.M. Italian Eatery is a perfect spot for a date night or a family dinner as it is conveniently nestled in the heart of Woodland Hills. They offer plenty of Covid-safe and spaced outdoor and indoor sit down dining with friendly and prompt service, or curbside pickup and delivery. There is a full bar open every night of the week except when the restaurant is closed on Mondays. Parking is available either on the street, or in a small lot in back, reachable through an alley. We recommend H.O.M. for your next meal if you are looking for a restaurant with a welcoming ambiance, great service and an excellent seasonal menu of well portioned servings that can be shared or eaten individually. Vegetarian and gluten free options available. HH

DRAMATIC NEIGHBORS

THE EARLY DAYS OF THE HIDDEN HILLS PLAYERS

Acity laced with many residents carrying a performing arts passion, it comes as no surprise that the early days of the Hidden Hills community were flush with performing arts groups playing simply for the “love of the craft”.

Beginning in the 1960’s, the Hidden Hills Players was a small, community-driven group that involved residents across the city participating in theatre productions. Ali Matheson, daughter of acclaimed science fiction author and screenwriter Richard Matheson (known for writing many Twilight zone episodes), reflected “as I remember, for the Hidden Hills players, all the residents wanted to

34 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | September 2021

do was have fun”. Richard Matheson performed in many Hidden Hills Players shows, including the original play of “Curse You Jed Smith”. With no specific playhouse or theatre, the Players opted to perform at the Round Meadow school auditorium. Ali remembers her mother working backstage running the show and has many fond memories of getting to experience such a warm, community driven performing arts program.

Connected to the Hidden Hills Players, was “Lola’s School of Dance’’. Lola Jensen, born 1919, began her

love for dance at a very young age, quickly turning it into a career. At age 13 during the Great Depression, with 12 mouths to feed, Lola and her brothers became their family’s primary breadwinners. They created a vaudeville act performing locally, soon branching out to larger venues such as Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco and touring up and down the West Coast. In the early 1950’s, with her radiant beauty, talent and charm she signed movie contracts with Columbia Pictures, Paramount Studios and Warner Brothers musicals. Appearing in movies with Ronald Reagan and

Doris Day and in television shows dancing with the Three Stooges. Her kindness and charisma followed her wherever she went, leaving Moe, Larry, Curly and the crew of the Three Stooges gushing that “Lola was an angel to work with”.

Getting married in 1947, Lola began to settle down and focus on raising a family in Hidden Hills. In 1960, simply for “the love of dance” she molded her new dream of being able to teach children to dance and perform into a reality. Tina Phillips, Lola’s daughter says, “It was at 24970 Jim Bridger Road in our mirrored garage, all mirrors…that’s why we would never park in the garage!”. Lola offered dance classes of tap, ballet, jazz and acrobatics to the young girls and boys in the

Hidden Hills area. One of Lola’s students reflects “my memories of her are more about how she made me feel. One time my show came off while rehearsing for a group dance for a recital. I kept dancing without it. When the dance ended Lola reacted as if I had done the most brave and wonderful thing in the world. She always made me feel special and capable of doing anything. She was as beautiful as she was kind”.

These special people and programs left their mark not only through their grander artistic contributions, but through the memories they left others, shaping and defining the Hidden Hills community as to what it is today. HH

Meander meditatively atop Tuna Cyn Park

Tuna Canyon Park is located in the western Santa Monica Mountains above the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Tuna Canyon Park joins over 1,255 acres of protected open space from Topanga State Park West to Las Flores Canyon. There are deep canyons and ridges covered in Sycamore & Oak trees, sage and various grasses, offering several different options and levels of hikes. For a moderate and mindful trip, hikers can choose the Labryinth Trail which at its peak provides a meditative circular maze with dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean.

From Topanga Canyon Boulevard, drive up Fernwood which turns into Tuna Canyon Road. This trailhead is only accessible from Topanga Canyon, not from

Big Rock Drive. Travel up this very curvy road about 5.5 miles, bearing left past houses until you reach 2806 Tuna Canyon Road, Topanga. Look for cars lining the street as you approach and park near two unmarked white fire road gates on the right. Tuna Canyon Road becomes a one-way street not far from the entrance which is an indication that you’ve driven too far.

Begin your hike by proceeding up the dirt fire road. When you come to a split, head left up a simple but steep hill shaded by Oak trees. After traveling up a wide open path, you will reach a panoramic clearing with a stunning ridge. It feels like you are floating above the clouds as hikers can rest on a bench and watch a breathtaking sunset. Don’t stop here! Continue a little

That’s the way things were when the Hotel Figueroa opened its doors in 1926, as a safe but stylish place for women coming to the city to find their future and fortune. Making this even more of a landmark is the fact that the hotel was originally opened by the YWCA operated by women who understood their guests’ needs and wanted to bridge the gap between making the place both a home-away-from-home and a jumping off point into a modern L.A.-whether it was for a vacation or for good. It was the dawn of American suffrage, when women at last had won the right to vote yet were still prohibited from checking into most hotels without a male chaperone. So much of what attracted the hopefuls to L.A. was within reach.

This is also what Hotel Figueroa guests from all walks of life today can expect when they stay at the landmark property, which

reopened this past August after an extensive restoration starting with its Spanish Colonial structure before transforming the space into an urban oasis for the current century. Green Oak Real Estate and Urban Lifestyle Hotels purchased the almost century-old building in 2014 and devised

the new iteration to fuse historic elements and present-day tastes in its lobby, public art gallery, dining venues, meeting venues, rooms and suites.

While the lobby’s green, botanical backdrop is a definitively 21st century

Throughout the Hotel Figueroa, an eclectic mix of local art is always in residency. Each guest suite is uniquely appointed to reflect the Hotel Fig’s deep connection to culture.

touch, Hotel Figueroa as a whole boasts many innovative amenities and perks appealing to staycation guests as well as those coming from around the U.S. and internationally. This includes a special “Micro Wedding” venue and package for hassle-free nuptials; home-y but technically appointed “Work Perk” suites; chic team workspaces with all the tech necessities; a progressive fitness and wellness program for guests created in

partnership with The Bridge Mind and Body Movement; “Daycation” passes you can purchase to enjoy the hotel’s pool and amenities, and nearby neighborhood; and four bespoke luxury suites (Featured Artist Suite, Parador, Casa Suites, Casablanca and Figueroa) with one-of-akind artwork and furnishings.

The two onsite restaurants, meanwhile, encapsulate downtown Los Angeles’

metamorphosis into a true city center. La Casita, an intimate two-story SpanishMediterranean resort-within-a-resort, features a coastal inspired menu by Chef AJ McCloud with an ocean-inspired organic menu listing offerings such as Ceviche Classico, poke, and elevated street tacos and healthy bowls that do not skimp on spice and inventiveness. Its world-class cocktail program is right in line with the mixology/craft cocktail boom which has

been unfolding in downtown L.A. for the past decade, and is further distinguished with an expansive agave program and day and nighttime events tapping into the current art district renaissance of the area. The Cafe Fig, meanwhile, is perfectly appointed for business meetings and date nights, but gives that traditional format a twist with Chef Jan Claudio’s artful blend of Mediterranean, Southwest, and Continental influences in his treatment of organic and sustainable products for everything from steakhouse-type fare to vegan

and gluten free options made with an equal emphasis on flavor and artistry.

As a historic landmark, Hotel Figueroa (a.k.a. The Fig™) has that “if these walls could talk” aspect to it as it continued operating during the Great Depression, World War II, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic, It is also worth mentioning that back in 1926, pioneering aviatrix Maude Bouldin oversaw the hotel, making her the first-ever female managing director of a hotel in the U.S. With a determination to make the property a place that could be a benchmark

for social change, the space served as a meeting place for practically every woman’s club in Los Angeles, press conferences and political rallies against sexism, racism, and other social issues. The tradition continues today, now under the leadership of Connie Wang, the hotel’s current managing director. While its easy enough to say the hotel is a monument

to perseverance, hope, and change as it closes in on completion of its first century, it is also a gateway to the world of cultural expansion and possibility Downtown L.A. is evolving into. HH
